Donations Sought For New Addiction Treatment Facility “Lancaster County does not have a (drug addiction treatment) facility for disadvantaged people,” said Dave Cope, president/CEO of Recovery Works Inc., which is working to change this by building an 80-bed treatment facility. Recovery Works was incorporated in September 2018 and was granted nonprofit status in August 2019. A Lancaster-Lebanon SCORE mentor assisted in that process. If all goes well, the new facility could receive its state license and be open within 16 months. “It’s a very detailed process to get a license to provide drug and alcohol treatment … a major undertaking,” Cope remarked. “But what is motivating us is nearly 70,000 people (nationwide) die of overdoses (annually). Pennsylvania is near the top of the list. It
doesn’t show any signs of lessening, and during COVID, it got worse.” The planned facility will be open to anyone, regardless of gender or ability to pay. Recovery Works will take Medicaid clients and those without insurance, and walk-ins will be welcome. “One of the largest deterrents of seeking help is (not having insurance),” Cope explained. “Rehab is a frightening, painful experience, so it’s hard to get (addicts) to go. Removing as many roadblocks as we can is important to get them into treatment.” Recovery Works will offer a 90-day inpatient rehab program, which will include detox and medically assisted treatment, as well as a follow-up recovery house program, where clients can transition back into society. (the circumstances) as best as we could.” Scheid credited the death of her father from a fall off his home’s roof on March 13 with changing her perspective. “It’s made me look at funerals completely differently than I did as a professional prior to that,” Scheid said. “It softened me a lot.” Scheid owns three funeral homes in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. In March, all of her staff members took continuing education classes on COVID-19 and embalming. The company’s first client who was positive for the coronavirus arrived during the last full week of March. “It was a completely different feel for me as a funeral director to have my first COVID patient,” Scheid recalled. “The husband was in quarantine, so we waited until he got out so we could have the funeral.” See Funeral Director pg 4

The majority of the bolts in a typical fabric store will be filled with natural fibers like cotton or manufactured fibers like polyester. However, there is usually at least one section dedicated to wool, and garments made from those fabrics are the focus of the annual Make It With Wool contest sponsored by the Pennsylvania Sheep and Wool Growers Association. The contest is designed to promote the beauty and versatility of wool fabrics and yarns. “Wool is a wonderful fiber to work with,” said director Linda Siegel of Lebanon. “You can steam and mold it into shape.” She noted that wool fabric is not always derived from See Make It With Wool pg 2 Cara Weil of Lancaster placed second in adult division in the state Make It With Wool contest last year. Make It With Wool from pg 1 sheep’s wool, and it can be used for more than heavy winter coats. “I enjoy finding lightweight wools I can wear year-round,” Linda said. “I made a light wool crepe black dress that I can wear with sandals in the summer and feel comfortable.” Linda entered the Make It With Wool contest for the first time as a 4-H member in 1972. She still has the suit made from fabric striped with acid blue, teal green, and cream. “There was a lot of competition,” she recalled. “A lot of people were sewing in the ’70s.” Home sewing has declined in popularity since then, but it is seeing a resurgence. Linda has been actively promoting sewing by serving as a 4-H leader for the past two decades. Additionally, she has encouraged the sewing passion of her daughter, Rachel. In about 2002 at age 13, Rachel won the state 4-H fashion revue with a Melton wool coat and subtly striped pants and then won the state Make It With Wool contest with the same outfit. That made Rachel eligible to compete at the national Make It With Wool event. “She didn’t place there, but she learned,” Linda said. “From then on, she sewed with wool in 4-H and challenged herself.” Before she turned 25 and matriculated into the adult age division, Rachel competed at the national event seven times. As an adult, she has had one outfit win and two others place. “Rachel got to see a lot of the country that way,” Linda said. “Sometimes she knew who the judges were, like the

She accepted the position of state director this year after the previous director, Tammy Hemmerly, moved to Florida. “I enjoy organizing things (and) helping people learn new things. I hope I can get more people interested in working with wool,” Linda commented, adding that she hopes to get more youths involved. “I encourage people to try it, even if it’s just a simple skirt or a knitted garment that makes them happy,” Linda commented. “Don’t choose (a pattern) beyond your skill level. Start with what you’ve made (before) and add a few new skills.” Linda recommended buying good-quality fabric that is more forgiving, such as flannel or a light or medium tweed, in colors that the sewist enjoys or complements their skin tone. Fasteners should be appropriate e.g., an invisible zipper is most likely not appropriate for a heavier wool - and the seams should have some kind of finish. To avoid creating a shine on the fabric, always use a press cloth. Towels wrapped around rolled-up newspapers can be used in place of a sleeve roll when pressing curved portions of a garment. The contest is open to anyone age 8 and older. All participants must select, construct, and model their own garments unless entering the “made for others” category. All garments must have been completed in the current year. Every fashion fabric or yarn used must be at least 60% wool or specialty wool fiber, which includes alpaca, angora, camel, cashmere, llama, mohair, and vicuna. There is a cost to participate; however, every participant will receive 1.5 yards of wool fabric and a variety of sewing notions such as pressing hams and books on tailoring. Friday, Sept. 4, has been set as the deadline to register for the competition, and entries must be received no later than Tuesday, Oct. 20. Typically, the contest is held in Harrisburg in conjunction with the Keystone International Livestock Exposition, but that event has been canceled. A myth claiming that anyone who dies with COVID-19 must be buried immediately or cremated has been popularized. “No, you don’t have to (rush),” Scheid said, noting that the process is generally the same but includes more precautions and greater quantities of disinfectant. To ensure attendees’ safety at funerary events, Scheid adopted an “invitation only” policy and did not publish service times. This allowed families to control the guest list. Additionally, rather than gathering attendees into a building for a memorial, services were held graveside, with guests socially distanced. Some families opted to livestream services to enable people to attend from the safety of their homes. Even with the move to the green phase of reopening, attendance has not rebounded. “If (someone was) just a casual friend, they aren’t coming as often,” Scheid said. In addition to decreased attendance, the traditional funeral home service has fallen out of vogue, and funeral lunches have been suspended. “They had nowhere to go
(because restaurants were closed),” Scheid said. “Some people went back to the house, and some were even afraid to do that. One family got creative and went to the pavilion at Millersville Park.” Scheid asserted that the funeral industry has been forever impacted by the coronavirus-related shutdown, although it has always been a changing industry. Funeral directors have been personally affected, too. “We’re people-oriented. It was so hard not to hug people and get close to them,” she commented. “ One aspect of the funeral industry has bounced back. After pre-need planning took a backseat in March, the phones began to ring again in May. All funeral homes offer preplanning, Scheid said, but even if individuals do not do official preplanning with a funeral home, it is a good idea to write down their wishes. The average age for preplanning is 75, as it is often associated with going into a nursing home or spending down assets for Medicaid. The best time to prepay is between ages 50 and 60, as it provides the best return on the investment, she said.
“It’s the only industry where you can pay for something in 2020 prices and not use it until 2040. There’s a benefit to prepaying. You’re not just handing out money,” Scheid said, adding, “It’s very important for people to understand, no matter who you preplan or prepay with, it’s always transferrable, even if you move to California.” Scheid remarked on a surprising quirk regarding preplanning. “It’s amazing how many people put off (planning for) the funeral, but they’re buying burial plots and picking out their headstones. Meanwhile, the funeral is more expensive than both of them,” she said. “The baby boomers should have done it or have thought about it by now.” Prepayment is backed by final death insurance and bonded by an insurance company. “Legally, the only person who can get money out (of the policy) is the funeral director who buries them,” Scheid explained. “If you outlive your funeral director, you can always take it to someone else.” To find a licensed professional funeral director and access consumer information, readers may visit www.pfda.org, the website for the Pennsylvania Funeral Directors Association.

Folks is well connected in the addiction and recovery community in Lancaster County. Other treatment agencies in the area have been consulted as well. “We get a lot of good affirmation from them,” Cope said. “That’s been very encouraging to have that support.” Before all that can happen, however, the facility needs to be built. Public restrooms and drinking fountains will not be available in the former Bon Ton site, but customers will find comfort facilities a few steps away inside the mall. Library Friends Plan Big Book Sale Mother, The Friends of the Lancaster Public they have recently traveled to any states on Library will host their 65th annual Big Book the Pennsylvania travel quarantine list. Daughter Win Sale from Monday to Wednesday, Aug. 10 to Volunteers are sought for the sale. On 12, at the former Bon Ton site at Park City Sunday, Aug. 9, between 11:30 a.m. and 4 Center, 600 Park City Center, Lancaster. The p.m., volunteers are needed to set up tables, National Titles book sale will be open on Aug. 10 from 7 put up signs, and unpack boxes of books.

Cassidy Kuhl and her daughter, Harper Chase Kuhl, recently won national titles in competitions sponsored by the Miss Agriculture USA organization. The pair resides in Willow Street. Harper Chase was named the 2020 National Tiny Miss Agriculture USA. She placed first in all areas, except for impromptu question, in which she placed second. Cassidy is the 2020 National Mrs. Agriculture USA. She placed first in all areas except speech and photogenic; she came in second in these two categories. Cassidy and Harper Chase had won the state titles after a competition in March. In 2019, they served as the Lancaster County titleholders along with Cassidy’s sister-in-law, Rebecca Kuhl, who was the Lancaster County Teen Miss Agriculture USA. Harper Chase was the state runner-up in her age group.

Tent Revival Meetings Planned Pet Photographers Offer Masks Gospel Express Ministries will present community tent revival meetings nightly at 7 p.m. from Sunday, Aug. 9, through Sunday, Aug. 23, at 215 S. Shirk Road, New Holland. The sessions will feature guest music groups and messages by evangelists. Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com.
