L-S Together Slates Back-To-School Drive By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The tagline of L-S Together is “Pioneering Life Together.” For the board members of the organization that formed last year to serve the Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District, togetherness means much more than singing “Kumbaya.” “There are needs (in the community). We want to be in a position to put (those who need it) in touch with the organizations that can help them,” said L-S Together vice chair Jim Smith. “There are a lot of resources available, but people don’t take advantage of them.” “We also help the organizations in Lancaster County recognize the needs in L-S,” added L-S Together chair Jenice Weaver, noting that the goal of L-S Together is to bring organizations and individuals together to strengthen the L-S community. The board has consulted with similar
community hubs in the county, such as Solanco Family Life Network and The Factory Ministries, to develop its structure and best practices. Weaver pointed out that while L-S has a reputation for strong families and comfortable living, there are still many needs in the district. “It’s not just poverty. We all have different needs, whether they’re physical, relational, financial, or spiritual,” she said. The organization would like to do a needs assessment of all district residents, and the group is looking into the possibility of getting an intern from Millersville University to facilitate the assessment. In the meantime, L-S Together works with Michelle Holland, who is the school district’s social worker, to identify areas of need in the lives of students and their families. The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The building, formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from govern-
ment funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and longterm operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to state-of-the-art. Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addi-

A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.” When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill. Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some,

the home is a last resort for a place to live. The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there for more than 15 years. It is their home, and Mable relayed that many say that it now feels like they have a new home. The residents say they truly feel that someone thought them worthy of living in a cheery, permanent home. Board members are hopeful that others will catch that vision and help with the remaining needs, which include three bathroom updates; laundry room improvements including a new ceiling, floor, and cabinets; and an office floor replacement. An annual gift to sponsor one of the 30 residents for $4,500 a year will help Our Home of Hope to operate and continue to give a home to residents who would not have another place to live. He will attend D’Youville College in Buffalo, N.Y., to major in international business. When he becomes a junior or senior, he plans to attend the University of Buffalo to minor in Chinese.

Sweet Fundraiser Will Support Ministry By Ann Mead Ash
The Horst Brothers, a local gospel and bluegrass group, will play at A Sweet Night of Music, a fundraising event for We Help Children to be held at the Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens in Gordonville on Aug. 11 from 6 to 9 p.m. Belizean individuals who have hearing loss. The new ministry will focus on pregnant teenage girls and new mothers. In Chicago, Samantha Jakus, a Moody Bible Institute graduate who interned with the Metcalfs in Guatemala, works with children in crisis through Reborn Ministries and a local school. The Metcalfs have also taken in orphaned children who need extra help or who are aging out of the orphanage and need to transition into adulthood. “We help them with school and work, and they graduate from us to more independence,” said Drew, who added that a 20-year-old girl who was with the family for nine months recently graduated into living and working on her own. More than half a dozen children have successfully moved into adult life with their help. Drew would like to see his family utilize their abilities to help children on the border of
Texas and Mexico. “The solution lies in helping those countries (that people are migrating from),” he said. “Something needs to be done, and we are available to (go there).” Sweet treats that will be served at the event will include a variety of donated desserts some in a buffet line and others at food stations. Cindy noted that locally made ice cream, cakes, specialty cakes, and cookies will be included among the options. “ We will have Guatemalan coffee,” she added. There is no cost to attend the event. No child care will be provided, so organizers request only children age 12 and up attend. There will be opportunities to donate, and a freewill offering will be received. We would love to show people how.” Getting involved can start with attending A Sweet Night of Music, a drop-in event to be held from 6 to 9 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 11, at Stoltzfus Homestead and Gardens, 3716 E. Newport Road, Gordonville. The menu will feature stations of sweets and beverages, and Drew, along with his wife, Cindy, will talk about their ministry helping children in Guatemala, Honduras, Belize, and Chicago, Ill. Live music for the evening will be provided by the Horst Brothers, a local gospel and bluegrass group. Drew and Cindy plan to update attendees on the growth of their ministry since they first moved their family to Guatemala nine years ago to work with children in orphanages there. “We will tell them what is going on in Central America with children and how to help them,” said Drew. We Help Children has worked to set up Children and Family Help Centers in communities so families can receive local help and give help in return. The Metcalfs and their three children are centered in Guatemala, and Drew travels to Honduras to help children there. A recent addition to the ministry includes connecting with a missionary family working with

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual Bookworm Frolic. The annual sale of used books will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The sale will feature approximately 40,000 books in 22 categories, including fiction, children’s literature, travel, music, and history. A food truck, TJ’s Ice Cream, will offer refreshments on Aug. 14. LMHS’ bookstore will be open as usual, selling new and used books, folk art, music, and family history resources. The fire companies will also host a smoke trailer, which is used to teach fire safety. Lancaster EMS will provide an ambulance, and Conestoga Fire Company will have its water rescue equipment on site. The Lancaster County HAZMAT Team will bring a drone. Pennsylvania Canine Search and Rescue will bring its highly trained search dogs and run a demonstration as well. There will be activities for children during the event. Face painting and balloon artistry will be offered, and the number of giant inflatables has been doubled. Harding noted that this year, in addition to a bounce house for younger children, an obstacle course will be available for older children. Additionally, a dunk tank will be part of the event, and Mich-

Parks Department To Offer Camps Lancaster County Parks Department has announced that openings are available in some upcoming camps. The programs will be held at the Environmental Center, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. The Best of Summer, a program for children ages 9 to 11, will be held from Monday, Aug. 12, to Friday, Aug. 16, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on the first floor of the Environmental Center. “It went great. We had an overwhelming amount of people here,” zoning officer Heidi Martinez said, reflecting on Providence Township’s first National Night Out (NNO) event held in 2018. “Brent (Musser) saved us; he went and got more hot dogs and rolls.” Folks like Musser, who is the alternate for the township’s planning commission, helped to make the 2018 NNO event a success, and still more are poised to assist at this year’s event, which will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 9 p.m. at the township’s maintenance building, 200 Mount Airy Road, New Providence. An estimated 400 to 500 people attended last year, so the event coordinators are planning for more people. There will be booths from 19 local businesses and organizations - more than double from last year. “We had a lot of organizations reach out to us after they saw how well it went last year,” Martinez remarked. She noted that Quarryville Library and CAP Head Start will be among the new participants. The Keystone Wildfire Crew will also participate for the first time, joining representatives of the Quarryville and state police forces, Lancaster County sheriff ’s deputies, Lancaster EMS, and the fire companies of Quarryville, Willow Street, Rawlinsville, and Refton. The four fire companies
provide coverage for Providence Township, and while they all are set to bring fire engines and rescue vehicles, Rawlinsville also plans to bring a water rescue unit and Willow Street will have a house where visitors can use hoses to extinguish simulated fires. A disc jockey will broadcast music at the event. There will be a bounce house for children, and rides will be offered in Rawlinsville Camp Meeting’s barrel train. The Lancaster Barnstormers mascot, Cylo, will visit, and vouchers to baseball games will be distributed as supplies last. Attendees may register to win gift cards, and four children’s bicycles will be given away. “That was a big hit last year,” Martinez said of the bike giveaway. The blood drive coordinator will attend, and folks can learn about the drives that are held at the township office approximately every eight weeks. The township’s parks and recreation commission will have a table to highlight its work, particularly on the Enola Low Grade Trail. There will also be an opportunity for residents to meet the township’s supervisors: chair John Schroeder, vice chair C. William Shaffer, and J. Pepper Goslin. Last year, the supervisors took turns grilling and distributing other refreshments, and they are expected to reprise that role. Hot dogs, ice cream sandwiches, and beverages will be available free of

L-S Together from pg 1 Recently, L-S Together partnered with Hans Herr Elementary School to collect 200 pounds of plastic bottle caps. Members of local Girl Scout troops washed and sorted the caps, which will be taken to Indiana, melted, and formed into a bench that will be returned to Pennsylvania and installed outside the school. A plaque will be placed on the bench to recognize L-S Together to make students and other community members aware that it exists and is here to help. L-S Together has also assumed administration of the Back-to-School Drive that had previously been hosted by Lampeter United Methodist Church. This has allowed several additional churches as well as local businesses to help with the event. The fourth annual Backto-School Drive will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 8 to 11 a.m. in the cafeteria of Lampeter-Strasburg High School, 1600 Book Road, Lampeter. The cafeteria entrance is located at the rear of the building, near Martin Meylin Middle School. Students who will be attending kindergarten through 12th grade at the district’s schools and are having difficulty affording the cost of school supplies are invited to attend the event. L-S Together has shopped the supply lists sent home from each of the district’s schools,
and folks may pick up backpacks and the necessary classroom items at the drive. Gift cards for Fashion Cents Consignment in Strasburg and Community Aid in Lancaster, along with gift cards for haircuts at local salons, will be distributed as well. Refreshments will be served. Weaver noted that specific families have been invited by Holland, but no one involved with L-S Together knows their identities. “We’re respectful of confidentiality,� Smith said. “Michelle is our liaison.� L-S Together is planning to serve 100 students at the Backto-School Drive. Ninety-four youngsters attended last year. Any leftover supplies will be given to Holland, who will distribute them throughout the year as the needs arise. The board of L-S Together also includes Glenn Weaver, Dan Carpenter, Jared Yordy, and Melvin Neff. Weaver shared that L-S Together is not a religious organization, although faith motivates the board members. “People help for different reasons, but (ultimately) people get the help they need,� Smith added. “Tie-Dye With a Twist,” an eclectic collection of tie-dyed fabric designs from award-winning tie-dye artist Michael Martelli, will be featured at Mulberry Art Studios, 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, during August. The public is invited to experience the exhibit on opening night during a First Friday reception from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 2. Martelli’s work takes tie-dye to the gallery exhibition scene. Using a variety of media, Martelli presents his artistically crafted tie-dyes in new ways. Pieces are presented traditionally as fabric and also as hard pieces with the fabric stretched over wood and finished with a hard resin coating. Martelli decided to try his hand at tie-dye while recovering from a series of health crises. As his skills improved, he began to find new ways to approach his art and build his understanding of the craft to create new ways of making and presenting tie-dye. He found healing in his artistic expression. Martelli continues to find new ways to present tiedyed art pieces, and he has found especially great joy in providing large pieces for backdrops at concert venues. Three Lampeter-Strasburg School District fifth-grade classes spent the day on May 17 at Millport Conservancy in Lititz learning to enjoy and respect resources. The field trip capped a year of nature and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) activities, including a collaborative trout-raising activity. The trout release was the culmination of approximately six weeks of work. Students raised trout from eggs to fingerlings and monitored the water quality in their tanks. They also studied stream habitat, watersheds, and conservation, and they learned about ecosystems native to Pennsylvania. On release day, the trout were placed in bags to be transported to their new home. After the trout release, students split into groups and rotated among a number of stations. Senior Meredith McDonald won first place for VFW Post 7294 in Millersville and senior Christine Fritz won first place for VFW Post 5956 in Manheim. Both local winners will
advance to the state competition. Five students received recognition for their work, including seniors Melissa Anderson, Pierce Lehman, Madison Snyder, and Madison Swope and junior Micah Gordley. Students created patriotic artwork with guidance from art teacher Scott Cantrell. They also wrote short essays explaining how their patriotism was expressed through art. Participants received certificates of recognition and monetary gifts from Post 7294 or Post 5956.

Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications. To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.” Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs. The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states. To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities. In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country. In addition to medication disposal units, The Rite Aid Foundation’s KidCents program has made a multi-year commitment to the Prescription Drug Safety program, a digital course about prescription drug abuse prevention. Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost. Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Additionally, naloxone, the opioid overdose reversal medication, is now available in all Rite Aid pharmacies without a prescription.
