The Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation will offer “Story, Craft and Critter: Turtles” on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 to 11:30 a.m. at the Environmental Center in Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster. Children ages 3 to 10 are invited and must be accompanied by an adult. Led by naturalist Kelsey Frey, participants will learn about turtles through an interactive story, then make a craft or two celebrating turtles and meet some live turtles. Byerland Church Plans Busy Weekend By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The first weekend in August will be busy at Byerland Mennonite Church, 931 Byerland Church Road, Willow Street. A one-day vacation Bible school (VBS) will be held on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 1 to 7 p.m., and a Bring Your Tractor to Church day will be observed on Sunday, Aug. 4, beginning at 9 a.m. The VBS theme will be “Bailed Out: Saved by Faith.” Children up through students entering sixth grade are invited to attend free of charge. The event will conclude with a picnic with youngsters’ families. Everyone is invited to participate in the tractor day. In addition to real tractors, folks are asked to bring representations of tractors that have significance to them, whether photos, toys, or models. Photos and small tractors will be displayed inside the church building. Riding tractors and
farm equipment will be parked outside. Attendees will be asked to fill out cards completing the sentence “I brought this tractor because…” Breakfast will be served at 9 a.m., and the worship service will begin at 10 a.m. A pulled pork picnic will follow the service. Rides will be offered in a tractor-pulled barrel train, and a pedal tractor obstacle course will be set up for folks to test their driving skills. Worship coordinator Dale Mylin explained that the purpose of the event is to honor church and community members with ties to farming. “On a quick look through the church directory, about 75 percent presently or during their working years were involved in agriculture,” Mylin said, noting that that figure includes Byerland’s co-pastors, Joe Garber and Jay Hess. “We want to show appreciation for the community and celebrate God’s provision for us.” See Byerland Church pg 2

When singer-songwriter Kiana Corley saw that the Crispus Attucks Community Center had been forced to cut back its meal service from five to two days a week, she told her mother, concert pianist Maria Thompson Corley, that she wanted to do something

community on weekends and holidays. Maria Thompson Corley is a pianist, composer, arranger, and writer. A graduate of The Juilliard School, she has appeared on radio, television, and concert stages in Canada, the United States, Central America, the Caribbean, Bermuda, and Europe, both as a solo artist and as a collaborative artist. She has released several albums. “Dreamer” includes countertenor Darryl Taylor, “Soulscapes” features piano music by African American women, and a third album records the first 12 of H. Leslie Adams’ “Twenty-Six Etudes for Solo Piano.” Thompson Corley’s recording of “Troubled Water” by Margaret Bonds was featured in the HBO Family documentary “Kabreeya’s Salad Days,” and her performance of the “Etude in C-Sharp Minor” by Adams is included in the documentary “Toni Morrison: The Pieces I Am.” Kiana Corley is a 21-year old musician based out of Lancaster. She draws from the stylings of Corinne Bailey Rae, Tori Kelly, Lianne La Havas, Eryn Allen Kane, and other similar-sounding artists. Her sound can best be described as acoustic soul intertwined with twinges of pop. Blue Star Mothers from pg 1 Naval Reserve and the Pennsylvania Army National Guard, spoke about comrades who did not return, and how it felt knowing they had made the ultimate sacrifice. Between speakers, members of the Blue Star Moms read the names of America’s wars, including the time frame and number of casualties from each. Lisa spoke about how the number of roses created a visual of how many soldiers are buried in the cemetery, and she invited everyone present to place roses on veterans’ graves throughout the 22 acres of the cemetery. The service closed with a gun salute performed by VET 21 Honor Guard, the playing of taps, and a prayer. Lisa said that the Red Rose chapter has about a dozen members, but that the group is interested in growing. The 25th annual Disaster Relief Golf Tournament, sponsored by the Mechanic Grove Church of the Brethren (MGCOB), is scheduled for Friday, Aug. 2, at Tanglewood Manor Golf Club, 653 Scotland Road, Quarryville. The tournament history started with Stanley Kreider, who had a vision to raise funds to help victims of natural disasters when he brought home $10 in “grow money” from the Brethren Disaster Relief Auction many years ago. His vision was to grow the money via a golf tournament. He did not know exactly how to run a golf tournament, but he knew someone who could do the job. That someone was Earle Hershey. Now, 25 years later, Stanley’s vision and Earle’s leadership have resulted in the collection of $270,000 to assist those who have been affected by natural disasters. All monies raised support disaster relief locally and around the world. The tournament format is a four-person scramble with starting times at 7:30 a.m. and 12:20 p.m. Sponsors and
golfers are welcome. The registration fee includes green fees, use of a cart, snacks, dinner prepared by the MGCOB church women, and prizes. The group, which is for mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans, was chartered in the fall of 2018 and now meets monthly at Calvary Church.

When Lisa Colon’s son, Isreali, went to Army boot camp in 2016, Lisa looked for other area mothers who would understand that experience and offer answers and support. “I have a friend at church whose son was in the Marines, but he was out by then,” said Lisa. When Isreali was stationed at Fort Riley, Kan., Lisa found an online group called Fort Riley Mothers of Soldiers made up of women who supported each other. Some of the members of the Fort Riley group were part of National Blue Star Mothers of America Incorporated, a group of mothers who have children currently serving or who are veterans. “(National Blue Star Mothers) was founded in 1942 when someone put an ad in the newspaper calling for moms of armed service members,” explained Lisa. “When they got more than 1,000 responses, they decided to form an official group.” National Blue Star Mothers of America was chartered by Congress in 1960. Lisa learned that no Blue Star Mothers group existed in Lancaster, and she reached out to the group’s national-level representatives. Armed with the information they sent and with the help of Dawn Wardell, a friend from Calvary Church where Lisa attends, Lisa set out to gather the five members she needed to charter a group. Word of mouth brought her the women she needed to designate the five officers, and the group submitted paperwork to the National Blue Star Mothers in September 2018. When they learned of a Lehigh Valley group within the 30-mile marker range, they had to ask that group’s permission to form. “(The Lehigh Valley group members) were excited for us,” said Lisa, who completed the charter over the phone with the national vice president and a former national president. “We became the founding mothers of the Red Rose Blue Star Moms,” said Lisa, who said the red rose was chosen as it is the symbol of Lancaster County. The group currently meets on the third Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m. in room 314 of Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. Meetings are open to the public, and new members are welcome. The chapter began taking part in efforts such as Valentines for Vets, which provided cards to area veterans through the local Veterans Affairs office. Lisa added that the chapter is involved in a similar effort that sends birthday cards to deployed service members whose birth dates are provided by their parents. On Memorial Day, the chapter held its first event at Lancaster Cemetery. Called “A Rose for Every Stone Memorial Day Tribute,” the event featured live music, speakers, and more than 1,000 roses from the Memorial Day Flower Foundation. “We joined forces and raised more than $1,100 to place (roses) on the tombstones of 1,037 veterans in the Lancaster Cemetery,” said Lisa. A number of other local groups took part in the event, including the Red Rose Veterans Honor Guard, AMVETS Post 19, Lancaster City Republican Committee, and Sons of the Union Veterans of the Civil War. Additionally, the Red Rose Blue Star Moms placed flags on the graves on May 25. At the ceremony, Rebekah Hill sang the national anthem, and James Reichenbach, president of Lancaster City Council, spoke about what military service meant to his family. As visitors walk into “The Power of Children: Making a Difference,” a new traveling exhibition at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, they will experience the powerful stories of Anne Frank, Ruby Bridges, and Ryan White. Although alive in different places and times, each child endured extreme prejudice and made a positive impact on the world. The exhibit is designed to encourage children and families to explore problems of isolation, fear, and prejudice by giving a face to the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic. Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne’s bestselling diary is a testament to the power of words. Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four

United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and provide educational resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide. Finally, visitors will learn about Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII. North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid because he’s different or sick,” Stoesz said. “You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of these kids were,” continued Stoesz. “These three children were a voice, but they didn’t do it alone.” The end of the exhibit challenges visitors to consider how they can make a difference. The exhibit is made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. “The Power of Children: Making a Difference” was organized by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit opened on June 16 and will remain on display at the North Museum through Sunday, Aug. 11. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, readers may visit www.northmuseum.org.

Many Lancaster County Office of Aging senior centers have leftover produce vouchers. The $20 nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for fruits and vegetables grown in Pennsylvania through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. Each person is eligible to receive vouchers only once per year. An individual must also be at least age 60, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $23,107 for one person or less than $31,284 for two people. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. book, Brenneman has been reading about one-room schools, and she interviewed local author Mary Virginia Shelley, historian Kenneth Hoak of the Conestoga Area Historical Society, and students who attended one-room schools in Lancaster County. The school district also allowed Brenneman to look through records from the early years of Walnut Run School. Additionally, Brenneman attended the Country School Association of America national conference this year. She sat in on keynote addresses and workshops, interviewed other attendees, and visited historically furnished schoolhouses in Virginia and Maryland. For the book’s photograph illustrations, Brenneman tapped the children of family and friends to act as Stella and her classmates. To get their attire right, she consulted Marie Breneman, an expert sewist and costumer. “I designed the costumes based on period photographs of local school students and created them with the assistance of five other seamstresses. My daughter, Sarah, sewed the dress she wore,” Brenneman said. Local History from pg 1 Brenneman also attributes her enthusiasm for history to a local history class taught by Barry Girvin and Thomas Larkin while she was a student at Conestoga Valley High School. That interest has resulted in two books for children, both set on the Herr property in Willow Street: “Susanna’s Surprise: A Day at the Hans Herr House” and “Christian’s Choice: A Day on the Hans Herr Farm.” While fictitious, the stories are fact-based, and they are illustrated with photographs of children dressed in period costume at various locations in the Herr House and on the farm. “I taught third grade for 12 years. I’ve been writing books I wish I would have had when I was teaching,” Brenneman said. Brenneman is currently working on her third book, “Cora’s Slate: A Day at Walnut Run School.” The one-room schoolhouse is located at the corner of Lime Valley Road and Walnut Run Road in Strasburg Township, and Brenneman’s great-grandmother, Cora Groff, grew up on a farm on Lime Valley Road. Brenneman noted that former Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District superintendent Robert Frick was instrumental in restoring the school, and he allowed Brenneman to take her students to Walnut Run for a day in a one-room schoolhouse. “My students and I enjoyed stepping back in time and experiencing a tiny slice of life long ago,” Brenneman remarked. At the concert, the MFE camp students will perform “Bittersweet Symphony� by the Verve and “Kashmir� by Led Zeppelin. PGRA is the latest endeavor from School of Rock founder Paul Green, dedicated to teaching young musicians. PGRA is modeled after the original music performance-based educational concept School of Rock, which Green sold in 2010 and which currently has more than 200 franchised schools around the world. PGRA is an audition-only program in which every student tours, plays professional-level shows, and plays with guest stars. MFE is a Lancaster-based nonprofit that provides resources and experiences in support of music education. Since 2006, executive director and founder John Gerdy and assistant director Brendan Stengle have worked in the community to raise money for music education in the county, including nearly $2 million in grants, scholarships, and direct program support to schools and community arts groups. Students Win Scholarships at www.musicforeveryone.org. One Too Many formed in September 2017. The group had its first public performance in October 2017, when it played two songs at a recital at McCaskey High School. The 10member band has played at various venues in Lancaster County and at Lancaster city’s New Year’s Eve event in 2018. Local artist Loryn SpanglerJones will also create artwork available for purchase as she paints on site during the concert. A mixed media artist, Spangler-Jones exhibits locally and is the founder of LSJ Studios in downtown Lancaster. Her work can be found in several different publications, from major art magazines to coffee table art books. All proceeds will go to MFE. The Walk-O Taco and Reunion food trucks will be onsite, and beverages will be available from Tellus360. All proceeds from a commemorative beverage cup and collection buckets will be donated to MFE. The public is invited to attend. Admission is free, though donations will be accepted for MFE. The concert is produced by Amy Banks of Robin-Banks Entertainment and Paul Green, in conjunction with the City of Lancaster, and is sponsored by Wenger Wealth.

The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will open its 13-week season on Saturday, Aug. 3, amidst the formal gardens of Mount Hope Estate and Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The Faire will be open on Saturdays and Sundays, through Oct. 27, as well as Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. The festivities will feature open-air stages and village streets filled with music, dance, and action-packed performances, including archery demonstrations and improvised songs and swordplay. Manpowered rides, a Gaming Village, a Fight Circle, a Dungeon Museum and an Amazing Maze all are part of the Faire, as well. This year, Queen Elizabeth I will return to the Faire after a five-year absence. Her coronation will take place on the Globe Stage. Scores of merchants will offer demonstrations, such as glass blowing and blacksmithing, and items for purchase, including jewelry, Renaissance costuming, specialty teas, home and garden décor, and leatherwork. More than 20 restaurants dot the Shire, offering a variety of foods and hand-crafted beverages. Additionally, beer, wine, and other beverages are available at pour houses throughout the Shire.
