Garden Spot FFA’s agricultural sales team places first in state competition BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

rom June 13 to 15, LampeterStrasburg High School’s Garden Spot FFA team competed at the FFA State Convention at Penn State University in State College. Over the course of the three days, students competed in a variety of career and leadership development events, as well as multiple workshops that featured keynote speakers. In the agricultural sales portion of the convention, Ava Immel placed first and Sarah Firestone placed second. Both students, who are sophomores at L-S, received gold medals. The high school’s agricultural sales team, which comprised Immel, Firestone, Sydney Albright and Jaclyn Martin, placed first in the state, and it will compete at the national convention in October.

During the competition, each student on the team participated in an individual sales call, during which he or she was tasked with identifying a product that would best suit a group of customers. Each contestant was allotted 15 minutes to discern the customers’ needs, formulate a presale call and present a sales pitch. The team members were also tested on different aspects of working in sales and what makes a salesperson successful. Prior to the competition, the sales team was given a list of products that the students would be tested on during the convention. The list included different types of feed and tubs, and the team members spent months studying every detail of the products, such as the benefits of using them and potential objections that buyers might have. A piece of history restored In the fall of 2022, LancasterHistory staff member Randy Harris noticed that multiple gravestones at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Lancaster were in need of attention. The three gravestones were leaning heavily and were at risk of falling over completely without the proper attention. Although the historic cemetery is home to many graves, these particular gravestones preserve an important piece of Lancaster’s history, as they belong to Lydia Hamilton Smith and her two sons, William and Isaac. Harris contacted the African

American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania and Charles F. Snyder Funeral Homes to share his concerns about the gravesites. The organizations partnered with LancasterHistory to devise a plan to restore the burial site. Andre Dominguez, a LancasterHistory volunteer and local historian, created a conservation report for the site and worked with Mosko Cemetery Monument Services to start the process of resetting and stabilizing the gravestones. Dominguez and Mosko used two 12-foot-tall cranes to lift the headstones, each of which weighed over 800 pounds. After the stones were See Grave restoration pg 4

Nonprofit organization offers free therapy to veterans BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Deep in the woods in Conestoga lies a 21-acre property populated by lush flora and thoroughbred horses. The Building Bridges Foundation at Anderson Farm, located on Indian Hill Road, was created by Dave Anderson in 2015 for one purpose: to offer veterans a place of peace, recovery and comradery. Building Bridges began by offering free equine therapy to veterans, using six thoroughbred horses. The number of veterans participating in Kathy and George Hopstetter host Building Bridges’ weekly Vet’s Café.
