Cruisers To Hold 20th Annual Car Show By Dayna M. Reidenouer
“Ride it, push it, tow it - we’ll accept it,” said Lancaster County Cruisers member Gary Heim of Willow Street, inviting owners of cars, trucks, and motorcycles to enter the club’s 20th annual car show on Saturday, July 6. In addition to no requirement for the vehicle to be operational, there are no rules regarding age, make, or model. “Bring anything; we don’t discriminate,” said club vice president Jack Parke of New Providence. “We get some cool hot rods and rat rods,” club member Barry Harsh of Mountville commented. “Even some barn finds,” Parke added. Club member Don Teeter of Willow Street is the proud owner of an antique 1983 Honda Accord SE. It might be surreal to think of vehicles from the 1980s and 1990s as classic or antique cars, but according to the Pennsylvania Code, an antique vehicle is any that has been manufactured more than 25 years prior to the current year.

In the village of Georgetown, there is a place where students with special needs gather three days a week. Guided by up to five teachers, the students at the Sunny Sunbeam Center begin their days with devotions and then spend time in song. Ranging in age from 15 to 30, the students take part in a variety of planned activities including lessons,

The International Food Court will sell food from more than a dozen places. “The food is a favorite part of the fair for many people,” Derksen commented. “To be able to enjoy amazing food from East and West Africa, Nepal, Latin America, or Europe in the same location is quite unique. From injera to pinchos and from stroopies to hot dogs, you’ll find it at Global Fair.” EMM president Gerry Keener pointed out that one of the purposes of Global Fair is to promote

understanding of other cultures and people. “The more exposure and knowledge we have of others who may be different from us, the more our worldview expands,” Keener remarked. “This is especially important for children. I believe when there’s more opportunity for appreciation and awareness, it can result in increased kindness and love for one another.” Parking will be free of charge, and admission will be by donation. Proceeds will be used to fund the fair in future years. Folks who attend Global Fair will also receive a bit of a bonus. “It’s a bit of a well-kept secret that visitors to Global Fair may also enjoy the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum and the grounds, including the Native American longhouse, without the customary admission fee,” Derksen said. Hosted by Eastern Mennonite Missions (EMM), Global Fair is an international missions and culture event, but it has been updated for 2019. It will still include information about other cultures, opportunities to talk to mission workers and hear their stories about God at work around the world, international food from a wide variety of countries, and activities for children. But there will also be new events and exhibits that are intended to be family-friendly, fun, and interactive. “One new feature is a world stage that will feature a range of entertainment,” said Kaylene Derksen, development director and member of the events committee. “The always-popular Mennonite Children’s Choir of Lancaster will sing international musical selections, and the Harrisburg STEP group will give a lively performance. There will be Korean music, drumming, and dancing as well as several other international acts.” A highlight for children - as well as adult visitors - over the years has been the alpacas brought by Eastland Alpacas. The fiber animals will return to Global Fair again. Joining the alpacas will be “residents” from the Nature Center at Black Rock Retreat in Quarryville, which may include snakes, turtles,
fashions and shoes, accessories and jewelry, antiques, and more. The tour will feature small, independent businesses. To further the Best Kept Secrets Tour’s goal of supporting the community, a portion of the price of each ticket will be donated to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Giant Food Stores will celebrate the grand opening of its new Quarryville store located at 100 TownsEdge Drive on Friday, June 28, at 8 a.m. Giant entered into an agreement to acquire the location from Ferguson & Hassler last month. The new Quarryville Giant, including the fuel station and café, will now operate on Sundays. Expanded hours of operation will be 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. seven days a week. Theater Will Present “Annie” Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre, 510 Centerville Road, Lancaster, will present the musical “Annie.” Performances will run from Thursday, June 27, through Saturday, Aug. 10. “Annie” includes the songs “It’s A Hard Knock Life,” “Easy Street,” “You’re Never Fully Dressed Without A Smile,” “I Think I’m Gonna Like It Here,” “Maybe” and “Tomorrow.” Inspired by a Depression-era comic strip, “Little Orphan Annie,” the show was brought to Broadway in 1977, winning the Tony for Best Musical and running for more than 2,300 performances. In 1982, it was made into a film. Since then, the show has been performed all over the world. “Annie” will feature a cast of professional adult actors, local children and a dog. The cast will feature Piper Sobon as Annie, Victor Legarreta as Oliver Warbucks, Meagan Michelson as Miss Hannigan, Bennett Leeds as Rooster, and Theresa Walker as Lily St. Regis. Heather Kropf will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 29. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m. Kropf, based in Pittsburgh, is a songwriter and performer with training in classical piano. She weaves Americana and jazz influences into indie pop songs that focus on the complexity of modern living, the awakened soul, and romance. Her fifth album, “Lights,” was recorded with Nashville producer/multi-instrumentalist Lex Price and features an all-star cast of players. Kropf performs live on a regular basis. In recent years, she has opened for Kim Richey, Jill Barber, and Eileen Ivers and has been showcased on John Platt’s “On Your Radar” series at Rockwood Music Hall in New York City. To help support the centers, organizers hold a yearly auction. This year’s auction will be the 13th annual benefit, and it will be held on Monday, July 1, at Fisher’s Quality Dairy Sales, 3304 B Old Philadelphia Pike, Ronks. The auction will begin at 11 a.m., but a variety of food items will be offered for sale beginning at 5:30 a.m. Quilts will be sold beginning at 4 p.m. Among the items that have been gathered for the auction are flowers and plants, wooden toys, and chests. Large specialty items, including swing sets, sheds, and carriages, will be sold beginning at 6 p.m. A 26-by-28-foot garage that can be built on-site in a choice of colors will also be auctioned off this year. Food that will be available for purchase at the auction includes breakfast items such as egg sandwiches, doughnuts, and coffee. Lunch items will include cheesesteak sandwiches, barbecued chicken and ribs, sub sandwiches, ham and cheese sandwiches, fruit cups, french fries, and soft pretzels. Ice cream, fry pies, and baked goods will be on the dessert menu. Food may be eaten on-site or taken out. Mervin, age 20, is happy to chat with visitors to the center. Asked what his favorite activity is, he walks to a kiosk in the Sunny Sunbeam Gift Shop to point out the key chains, crocheted frogs, and rolled-candy dolls he has helped to
assemble. The students also assemble gift baskets to sell. Hygiene kits are assembled for Mennonite Central Committee, and newspaper is torn up to create animal bedding. Sadie, who is one of the teachers, said that making gift items and other productive tasks is just one of the activities students take part in at the center from 9 a.m. to 2:45 p.m. each day they attend. During news time, any of the students can share news from home, Sadie noted, adding that students often choose to tell about new babies and new puppies. Lessons, which include reading, flash cards, telling time, memory verses, money, and German, are also on the agenda to help students retain what they learned at school. Students bring their lunch two days a week, but one day a week a teacher makes lunch, and students are welcome to bring
desserts or other courses. “The children love to bring things along,” said Sadie. The center also provides haystack meals similar to taco salads - for families and friends who have an interest in helping students with special needs. On nice days, lunch may be eaten outside in a fenced yard behind the center. Students take turns helping to mow the grass and tending the flower beds in the yard, tasks Sadie noted that they enjoy. Sadie began working with the children at Penn Johns Sunbeam when she was asked to fill in for another teacher for a year. She spent three years there, and she has been at Sunny Sunbeam for eight years now. “I am so blessed. I just love (my work with the students),” she said. Patriotic Summer Concert Posted The 2019 Summer Music Series at Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, will continue with a patriotic concert featuring a performance by the United States Army Band, Pershing’s Own, on Sunday,

There is a cost to exhibit a vehicle, with a discount for those who register before the event. Spectators will be admitted free of charge, but they are asked to bring nonperishable food items for the Solanco Neighborhood Ministries food bank. A portion of the proceeds from entrance fees will also go to Solanco Neighborhood Ministries. Dash plaques will be given to the first 200 entries. Harsh estimated that approximately 315 vehicles were entered in last year’s show. “That’s not counting ours,” he said. “Our cars aren’t judged.” All of the prizes are reserved for nonmembers. “We have loads of trophies, cash prizes, and tons of door prizes,” Parke remarked. A disc jockey will play oldies music, and there will be a muffler rap competition. Food vendors will sell burgers, hot dogs, ice cream, fruit cups, and beverages. There will also be a bakery table. The show will also include a flea market, and there will be a number of booths selling automotive supplies, window-cleaning products, jewelry, handbags, and more. Additionally, the Hogs and Heroes Foundation will have a stand with information about the community of motorcycle riders that supports public safety, the U.S. military, and Wounded Warriors. Parke noted that the show appears to be a little bigger each year. “ We’re getting a lot of influx from Maryland and Chester County,” he observed. The Kiwanis Club of Southern Lancaster held a charter celebration earlier this year at The Willows in Strasburg. During the celebration, Steven Knepp of New Providence was installed as the club’s charter president, Julie Freeburn was installed as treasurer, and Kimberly Miller was installed as secretary. Kairos Health Systems worked with Value Care Alliance (VCA) recently to promote a PatientDriven Payment Model (PDPM) Boot Camp presented by Stephanie Corbett, DHA, of HCPro. Skilled nursing facility participants located in Connecticut, Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Tennessee attended the program in preparation for Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ (CMS) post-acute care value-based care management program, which begins in October 2019. Because a significant percentage of high intensity care is delivered in the post-acute care setting after discharge from the hospital, Kairos Health Systems and Value Care Alliance worked together to provide this program to prepare skilled nursing facilities to successfully meet the requirements of the PDPM program, which promotes meeting the increasing health care needs of patients with complex medical needs and providing the highest quality, satisfaction, and cost standards of care. Kairos worked with VCA to provide the HCPro PDPM Boot Camp for its post-acute care partners. The HCPro PDPM Boot Camp provided organizations with a comprehensive review of the service requirements necessary to prepare them for new higher acuity post-acute care delivery models and develop a plan to prepare for participation with PDPM, bundled payments, and other payer value-based care requirements. Ryan, a junior at Solanco High School, was presented to the club by Robert Dangler, assistant superintendent of the Solanco School District. He is also a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Ryan also participates in martial arts. Ryan’s future plans include attending a fouryear college to study physical therapy. His goals also include earning a black belt and continuing to perform music. Thomas is the son of Matt and Tina Shockey of Lancaster. Thomas is the senior class president, the Thomas Shockey (right), a Student of the Month for Mini-THON treasurer, a May, was presented to the Lancaster South Rotary High School Hero, and a Club by Kevin Peart, superintendent of the Lampeter-Strasburg School District.
Thomas plans to attend Penn State’s main campus, where he will major in mechanical engineering. His ultimate goal is to obtain a master’s degree in mechanical engineering.

A familiar face has returned to lead New Hope Community Life Ministry, which is headquartered at 248A Maple Ave., Quarryville. Deb Riddell was hired to fill the role that Neil Uniacke previously occupied for seven years, and she began her tenure toward the end of May. She previously managed New Hope’s Community Closet Thrift Store, 128 TownsEdge Drive, Quarryville, from December 2008 to May 2015. As New Hope’s executive director, Riddell will work closely with the Community Closet’s current manager, Beth Tyson. “I understand what that environment is and what the working issues are,” Riddell remarked. “The thrift store funds us and allows our counselors to charge lower rates. It’s a great place to shop and donate good clean items. When you shop and donate, you’re helping to change lives.” New Hope is a nonprofit organization that aims to promote the healing and abundant life of individuals and families through Jesus Christ by offering affordable counseling services. The ministry is also dedicated to mobilizing resources of local churches and the community to strengthen relationships. Riddell graduated from Columbia
University with a degree in nursing and an interest in psychiatric nursing. As a young person, she accompanied her father, a recruiter for a New York-based college, at conventions, where she saw him model relationship-building skills. Riddell is excited about putting her own skills to use as she resumes relationships that she had formed as the Community Closet’s manager before spending three and a half years working in donor development at Bethany Christian Services in Lancaster. Riddell said that first on her list of things to do is meeting individually with each of New Hope’s board members, the pastors of the organization’s supporting churches, and its donors. She also wants to learn about the other agencies in the Southern End and how New Hope might partner with them. Expressing appreciation to current and past contributors to the ministry and establishing new donors will be part of Riddell’s ongoing work. “Giving can be an act of worship,” Riddell said. “I can help (donors) remember the bigger picture, the eternal aspect of (their support). I want to show the impact their gift is making. I get to help people understand why this center that offers counseling at an affordable rate is important to the community.” In the long run, Riddell would like to work with the board to develop a strategic plan. “Having a strategic plan keeps your focus; it keeps everybody going the same direction,” she said. “It’s a changing world; we need to be staying current. We want to offer a service the world needs.” Currently, New Hope has several part-time counselors available to meet with clients. These individuals are in the process of earning their licensure, so they can offer their services at a low cost. Riddell would like to hire a Spanish-speaking
