The 2019 Summer Music Series at Long’s Park,
SUMMER SING-ALONGS
Prima, 941 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster, will offer a series of Summer Sing-Alongs supported by Lamphouse Films. Each event will feature subtitles for all of the songs, along with interactive elements. The series will feature “The Greatest Showman” Sing-Along on Friday, June 28, and Saturday, June 29; “Grease” Sing-Along on Friday, Aug. 9, and Saturday, Aug. 10; and “Hamiltunes” Sing-Along on Friday, Aug. 16, to Sunday, Aug. 18. Patrons are invited to dress as characters from each of the titles. Tickets are available at www.primalancaster.org or by calling 717-327-5124. Group discounts and Summer Sing-Along packages are also available. SPECIAL PROGRAM
300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will join museums nationwide in the 10th annual Blue Star Museums program, which provides free admission to the nation’s active-duty personnel and their families this summer. The 2019 program was launched on May 18, Armed Forces Day, and will end on Monday, Sept. 2, Labor Day. The free admission program is available for those currently serving in the United States Military - Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, and Coast Guard - as well as members of the Reserves, National Guard, U.S. Public Health Commissioned Corps, and NOAA Commissioned Corps, along with up to five family members. Qualified members must show a Geneva Convention common access card (CAC), a DD Form 1173 ID card (dependent ID), or a DD Form 1173-1 ID card for entrance into a participating Blue Star Museum. The list of participating museums is available at www.arts.gov/bluestar museums. Summit Hill Next Up In Concert Series The Sounds of Strasburg concert series will continue in Strasburg Community Park on Saturday, June 29, at 6:30 p.m. with an opening acoustic set by the Deconstructionists, a Strasburgbased singing/songwriting duo. The featured performance will be by Summit Hill Bluegrass Band. Back by popular demand, this hometown favorite group will play its combination of hard-driving bluegrass with softer old country tunes, along with gospel favorites and sacred songs. “This concert promises to please all ages,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which hosts the concert series. “We are excited to bring Summit Hill back to the outdoor stage in the park’s amphitheater, as they have grown to five members.” Summit Hill’s members are Ron McVey, Tim Kilby, Keith Kupp, Harold Tipton, and Jeff
Summit Hill Bluegrass Band will be the featured group during the next Sounds of Strasburg concert at Strasburg Community Park on June 29. Diccard. The band has achieved local acclaim through its annual participation in the Quarryville Fair Parade and the Strasburg Lions Club’s Halloween Parade.

Re-Enacting Civil War History
Vocal Harmonix Focuses On Making Music, Friendships
The Civil War Living History and Tactical Exercises event at the Robert Fulton Birthplace, 1932 Robert Fulton Highway, Quarryville, has expanded once again. Last year, nearly 1,000 visitors each day viewed the addition of Gen. Longstreet’s headquarters camp, the signal corps, additional Federal generals, troops from the 1st Pennsylvania Reserves Company D,
and skirmish battle re-enactments. This year, the event will be held on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, June 28, 29, and 30, and will bring an additional camp area featuring sutlers, the Christian Commission, Wheat’s Tigers Zouave unit CSA, U.S. Colored Troops, additional Federal generals, Confederate generals from Lee’s Lieutenants, and more to be confirmed. The hugs started almost as soon as the members of Vocal Harmonix gathered at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, for a
rehearsal on June 10. One woman had recently received a cancer diagnosis. Another had returned from traveling. Yet another had had surgery. Whether the reason was positive or upsetting, the embraces abounded. See Vocal Harmonix pg 8

Additional activities will include fishing at Strasburg Pond, swimming at the pool in Central Park, caving, and indoor climbing. Ultimate Adventure for youths ages 11 to 13 will be offered from July 8 through 12 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pavilion 21. Weather permitting, campers will visit a different adventure site daily. Activities will include indoor climbing, kayaking at French Creek State Park, swimming, fishing, creek hiking, using water slides, ziplining, and archery. Activities will be challenging, and children must be prepared for full days.

According to Frank, each team donated $100 for the Challenger LL program, which provides an opportunity for children with disabilities to play baseball. This year, the league will donate $2,000 to the Challengers, enabling the Challengers to provide uniforms and equipment at no cost to players. Lanco Senior Softball was established in 1989. This year, the league consists of 13 teams with more than 250 players age 60 years of age and up. The evening will commence with a check presentation to the Challenger LL, followed by the singing of the national anthem by 4-year-old Wrightsville native Landon Mak and the All-Star activities. After the completion of the game’s second inning, there will be a two-inning exhibition game of the Challenger LL. The remainder of the Lanco Senior Softball game will continue after the exhibition.

Whitehaus explained that membership is skill-based rather than attendance-based, so it is not necessarily a hardship if folks are unable to attend every Monday evening rehearsal. Each song the group performs has a rehearsal track so that choir members can perfect their parts at home. To ensure a near-perfect sound, each member is required to record herself singing her parts and send the recordings to her section leader for approval. The group’s hard work has paid off over the years. Most recently, VHMX placed third overall and first in the midsize division in Region 19 competition and is waiting to receive an invitation to compete at the international contest that will be held in Louisville, Ky., next year. Additionally, quartets composed of VHMX members finished eighth and 13th out of approximately 50. During the recent rehearsal, Whitehaus reported that the chorus will be ordering pins to commemorate that VHMX scored more than 600 points in adjudication. She noted that 800 is a perfect score and, like the SAT, is difficult to achieve. Leading a chorus to score more than 600 designates Whitehaus as a master director in Sweet Adelines International (SAI), which is the largest women’s singing organization in the world. VHMX has been affiliated with SAI since 1961. A few VHMX members are part of the SAI leadership team. SAI choirs - VHMX included - specialize in unaccompanied, or a capella, singing. VHMX is an a capella show chorus, with a style that is close to musical theater. The group sings a number of barbershop-style songs, but its repertoire is not restricted to that style. All of its music is performed
from memory, and each piece is carefully choreographed. The group accepts performance gigs, including singing telegrams on select holidays. “We’d love it if people need entertainment, they’d think of Vocal Harmonix,” Whitehaus said. VHMX will participate in the Lititz Fourth of July Parade on Wednesday, July 3, and sing the national anthem at a Barnstormers game on Thursday, Sept. 5. The group will also perform as part of Opera Lancaster’s Lemonade Concert Series on Thursday, Aug. 1, at 7 p.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 500 E. Roseville Road, Lancaster. During that concert, VHMX will join Harmony
Revolution, featuring members of the Red Rose Men’s Chorus, on several pieces. On the four Mondays leading up to the Aug. 1 concert - July 8, 15, 22, and 29 - at 7 p.m., folks who are interested in VHMX are welcome to attend rehearsals, where they can learn to sing a modern arrangement of Ella Fitzgerald’s “Misty.” “We’ll be teaching what we do,” Whitehaus said. “They can sing with us when we sing with the men without joining us.” New members are welcome at any time. The main event will be held on the weekend, with the encampment open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on June 29 and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 30. Parking and admission will be free of charge, but a nominal fee will be charged for tours of the historic birthplace. The encampment will be divided into three fields: close to the birthplace, the lower lawn, and an adjacent battlefield. The living history area of the camp will be located closest to the birthplace, with authors, a blacksmith, a surgeon, Federal and Confederate generals, President Abraham Lincoln, and other dignitaries housed there. Guests may visit with Lincoln and the generals twice each day. Gen. and Mrs. Robert E. Lee will receive callers on June 29. Lincoln’s private secretary, John Nicolay, will join the president on June 30. The lower lawn will house the military camps, which will include signal corps, infantry, dismounted cavalry, artillery, Gen. Longstreet’s command headquarters, and rifle and artillery demonstrations, alternating every half hour. A battle re-enactment will be held each afternoon on the battlefield. The sutlers’ camp will be situated at one end of the military camp. Civil War-era reproduction clothing and materials, including camp tables, boxes, and chairs, may be purchased by visitors as well as participants. The Christian Commission will also be camped at that end, and chaplains Alan and Faith Farley will conduct Sunday services there. Sheep and wool educators may be found at the lower end of the field, alongside the Black Confederates. Atomic Hogs BBQ will be located between the parking field and the living history camps, just off from the barn. Inside the end room of the barn will be Frank Vattelana Jr. with his collection of memorabilia, including photographs, from the war. Printed schedules will be available from several locations within each camp as well as from the food vendor. Visitors may also make donations to support the Southern Lancaster County Historical Society’s mission to continue to preserve the birthplace and to cover costs related to the hosting of the event. Books by J. Arthur Moore will be sold at the tent where 12-year-old Sgt. John Lincoln Clem and a cadet will tell of the boys of the war, and proceeds will also help to offset the cost of the event. Setup for the encampment will begin on Thursday, June 27, with the arrival of the sutlers, the establishment of the military command headquarters and artillery in the military camp, and the placement of canvas for the living history, sutlers camp coordination, and the history of the boys of the Civil War. Food service this year will be provided by Atomic Hogs BBQ, which will set up and start the cooking process on June 27. The barbecue caterer will be ready to serve visitors when the event is open to the public. Visitors are welcome between 2 and 4 p.m. on June 28 and may watch the camps come together, ask questions, and visit with participants as long as they do not interfere with setup. Sutlers will be open for business, and the food service will be in full operation during that time.

L-S Teams Settle For PIAA Silver Medals by Mona Steinhauer
According to the PIAA Championship program, only two schools have had both softball and baseball teams appear in the state championships. In 2008, Loyalsock’s AA teams both won their respective brackets. This past Friday, June 14, at Penn State University, Lampeter-Strasburg’s 5A softball and baseball teams also advanced to the finals. Unfortunately their quest for gold fell short. The softball team suffered a 5-3 defeat to Penn-Trafford in a 4 pm game while the boys dropped an 8-3 result to Red Land in the nightcap. “It’s an incredible experience for both of our teams, for the school and the community,” said Pioneer Athletic Director Branden Lippy of reaching the state championships. “They should be proud of their Photo by Mona Steinhauer

accomplishments no matter what color medal they bring home.” At Penn State’s Beard Field, the girls’ team fell behind early and never caught up. They were held to an unusual single digit number in hits (8) and left the bases loaded in a key third inning at bat. The Warriors finished with five runs (three earned) on nine hits. “I thought we hit the ball hard, but right at them,” said head coach Gene Charles. “Or they came up with a big catch.” The Warriors, after a lineout to Chloe Blantz at short, threatened in the second inning with a single to center and a bouncer over third, but Daisy Frank (2B) and Blantz turned a double play to end the threat. Penn-Trafford was at it again in the third inning. Carlee Lamacz, batting ninth, hit a one out single. Madison Forsythe followed with a base hit and Emma Armstrong’s double pushed in two. L-S cut that lead in half in the bottom of the inning. Jocelyn Branco connected for Lampeter’s only extra base hit, a double to left and scored on Julz Garber’s one out groundout. Summer Peters, who went 3-4, singled to right and Blantz worked a full count walk. Baker grounded to the pitcher but the throw to first was dropped, loading the bases for Cam Byler. That opportunity, however, ended when Baker was picked off first by the Warriors left-handed catcher. “That was a key play,” said Charles. “I liked our chances with Cam at the plate.” The Warriors pushed two more across in the fourth with a triple to right. After a walk, and a strikeout, a sacrifice bunt wound up scoring two. Not to be out done, L-S responded in the bottom half. Byler and Frank both singled and, with two outs, Taryn Hostetter smacked a two run base hit, cutting the lead to 4-3. “Taryn, batting ninth, came up with another big hit,” said Charles. “She had two of our three RBI’s.” Penn-Trafford quickly regained the momentum as Armstrong crushed a one out homer over center field to extend the lead to 5-3. Then, with two outs, they loaded the bags with a double, a hit batter and a base hit before a sharp grounder to Hostetter at third gave L-S a little boost. L-S looked to close the gap when Peters and Baker, with one out, both reached on base hits. Relief pitcher Mia Smith forced both Byler and

Gabby Drumm to pop out. “I thought Gabby’s hit was going to hit the fence,” said Charles. “That would have tied it up and changed the game. That was a huge catch.” Both teams went three up, three down over the next two innings, leaving the defending PIAA champs with a well-earned silver medal. “You have to credit their pitchers,” said Charles. “They kept us in check. We usually find a way but at this point and at this level, anything can happen. To be 28-2 is a great season. We won the section title our first year up in Section Two and won the League playoffs. To get to states two years in a row….the ball has to bounce your way some times. It’s a long grind but there’s nothing wrong with second place. We’ll reload and get ready for next year.” And with losing just one senior starter in Baker, who will attend Messiah College in the fall, it could very well be another long season for the Lady Pioneers. Last Tuesday afternoon at Avon Grove High School, West Chester East’s Paige Olson and Sam Gomez broke up Baker’s no-hitter with a pair of solo homers in the top of the sixth but it was all for naught as L-S held on for a 5-2 PIAA semifinals win. Despite playing without senior cocaptains Kinzie Thompson and Kelsey MacLaughlin, who left the team after graduation, the Vikings put the pressure on early. Amanda Gomez reached on a one out, three base error on a fly ball to left field but was left stranded. Baker struck out clean-up hitter Sam Gomez and Olivia Ronayne hit a ground ball to short to end the threat. “We were concerned about the top two hitters in their lineup,” stated Charles. “But that turned out to be the two girls that were missing. But still, they put pressure on us early. And Brynne shut them down. She was able to get ahead in the count and did a nice job with her movement,” he noted. “Plus I thought she dug deep in the middle innings and seemed to have a bit more pop on the ball.” L-S quickly countered. Blantz connected for a two out single and Baker’s double to left put the first run on the board. Then, with one out in the second, Drumm crushed a change-up for a
2-0 lead. “They got Gabby on a fastball and then fooled her with the changeup,” Charles explained. “And I thought to myself, go ahead, throw another changeup. She won’t miss that one and she didn’t, sending it over the fence.” L-S left two on in the third but got going again in the fifth. Garber worked a walk and eventually scored on Baker’s two out base hit. Byler followed that up with a double to right, pushing the Pioneer advantage to 4-0. The Vikings (24-4) got on board in the top of the sixth. Olson sent Baker’s first pitch over the left field fence for their first hit of the game and, with two outs, Sam Gomez matched Olson’s effort, clearing the fence in almost the same spot and cutting Lampeter’s lead in half, 4-2. The Pioneers shook off WCE’s breath of new life and went back to work at the plate. With two outs, Hostetter singled and scored on
Garber’s full count double. “That was huge,” said Charles. “Taryn’s hit got us to Julz who hit the gap and gave us a three run lead. The production we’ve been getting at the bottom of the lineup has been instrumental in our success. We finished with nine hits, though low for our three state playoff games, they were against a pretty darn good pitcher who mixed her speeds.” Baker, who recorded three strikeouts, scattered four hits and did not walk a single batter, worked a strikeout and a ground out before Frank picked up a Jess Gomez flare that fell behind first and flipped it to Drumm for the final out of the game. “We work on that play and Daisy executed,” Charles said. “And then we were like, wow, that’s the last out of the game. And now we advance to the state finals for the third time in four years. I think we’ll be pretty darn good next year too.”

BASEBALL After watching the girls fall short in their quest for gold, the baseball team crossed the campus to Medlar Field looking for revenge and their own PIAA gold. This final was a rematch of the District Three third place game which Red Land, the top seed at the time, won 6-0. L-S (24-4), however, bounced back after that loss, winning three games to get to the finals for the fourth time in school history. They finished second in 2012 and won both in 2005 and 1994. Their hopes of avenging that district loss on a bigger stage, however, slipped away when Red Land , down 3-1 after five complete innings, rallied for seven runs on six hits and went on to earn an 8-3 victory and the 5A title. “The guys were focused and ready to go,” said Martin. “I thought we played an excellent game. They just found the holes. “There are over 650 baseball teams in the state,” he added. “Only 12 get to the state finals. That kind of puts things in perspective.” This was a pitchers’ duel early. Red Land went up early, scoring one in the bottom of the first on a walk, a stolen base and an error. L-S tied the game
in the third. Patrick Holmes singled and was sacrificed to second by Taso Kovack’s bunt. Joseph Meck followed with a walk before Thomas Shockey’s sac fly to center scored Holmes. L-S gained what they hoped would be all the momentum they needed in the fifth, scoring two runs with two outs. Kovack worked a full count walk, Meck singled to right and Shockey walked to load the bags. Karpathios, a sophomore, cracked a 2-2 pitch to left field and put L-S in front 3-1. Red Land looked to return the favor in the bottom half, putting two on via walks, but Holmes gathered up a sharp grounder to third, stepped on the bag and fired to first for the double play. After a three up, three down sixth, the Pioneers elected to make a pitching change, moving Dylan Byler to the hill. The senior hurler looked to repeat his outstanding effort in Monday’s upset victory over Cedar Cliff but it wasn’t to be. Red Land connected for five hits before Doug Schneider finished the inning, leaving the home team with an 8-3 lead. “The last couple of games, Braedon has gotten tired around 80 pitches,” said Martin. “He’s a gamer and got the

They’re a good hitting team but looking back, I think we’d make the same move again.” With just one chance left for a comeback, L-S struck out twice and popped up in their last at bat, ending their more than successful season with a loss. The Pioneers, with 12 seniors on their roster, finished with a 24-5 mark. They were the fourth place team out of District Three and, as Section Two champs, secured their first L-L League crown since 1994. They opened the season with seven straight wins and recorded eight shutouts on the year. “This is a difficult group to replace,” said Martin. “They’re hard working and talented and they’ve set a good

example. They were an enjoyable group to work with every day. And I feel confident with the guys moving up. They know what it takes to get here.” Considered by most to be the underdog, the Pioneer baseball team went about business as usual Monday afternoon, June 10 at Red Lion High School and came away with a 3-0 PIAA semifinals win over District Three champ Cedar Cliff (23-5) to reach their first state championship since 2012. It was their third straight PIAA victory after dropping a pair of shutout losses in district play. “I think, after those losses, the players were able to pull together and reignite the passion and were determined to not let this awesome ride end,” Martin said. Byler anchored the win from the hill, retiring the first ten hitters before Trey Law’s one out single in the fourth broke up a no-hitter. He finished with
six strikeouts and did not give up a single walk. “Dylan has bought in with pitching coach Matt Carta’s plan and he has picked up an extra pitch this year which has added to his effectiveness,” said Martin. “He was able to command each pitch, helping his efficiency while keeping his pitch count low and their hitters off balance. This is his first one-hitter of the season, though he did get close, only giving up two hits in both league playoff games against Donegal then Hempfield.” L-S threatened early, loading the bags with one out in the second inning but coming away empty. They finally broke through in the fourth when Holmes (1-1, 1 RBI) singled home Hunter Cunningham (1-2, 1 RBI) who walked to open the frame. Karpathios, who is batting .464 in the post-season, doubled in the fifth and L-S added a single run in the
sixth when a Blantz base hit to center field was misplayed, scoring Snyder who reached with a leadoff single. They pushed across their final run of the game in the seventh. Karpathios, who led the Pioneers’ eight hit attack, collected a second double and courtesy runner Alex Knapp scored on Cunningham’s sac fly to center. “We knew they had a few guys who could hit ground balls and beat them out for singles,” stated Martin. I thought Taso Kovack (short), Derek Eckman (second) and Patrick Holmes (third) each made great plays against these hitters/runners to keep them off the bases. All three of them have a great feel for the pace of the game,” he continued. “Overall, the entire team gave a noteworthy effort, each of them unfazed by the weather, being present in the moment and supporting their teammates.”

Sacred Heart School in Lancaster recently hosted Will Kiefer, founder and executive director of Bench Mark Program, as part of its Youth Entrepreneur Summit. Bench Mark is a nonprofit with a social impact mission to support at-risk teenagers in Lancaster County. Kiefer shared that he had wanted to make a positive impact on his community and used all his savings to start Bench Mark. The nonprofit began to grow, and now, more than five years later, Kiefer works fulltime for Bench Mark. Students had the opportunity to make a list of their talents, their interests and what they enjoy doing. The list will be used for future exercises as part of the entrepreneur curriculum.

Leonard is the son of Jim and Peggy Leonard of New Holland. Along with his family, he attends St. Stephen Reformed Church in New Holland. There, he has been on kitchen staff for the Thanksgiving dinner for many years and assists with the annual Christmas breakfast for children. He has also made and distributed valentines for veterans. He continues to assist with a water station for Garden Spot Village’s annual distance races. He has also volunteered for several years to help with its annual fundraising auction. Gibson’s Scouting record dates back to 1999. His adult service began as a Tiger adult, followed by Cubmaster of Pack 91, Assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 91, and unit commissioner, the latter two since 2005. At the district level, he has served as district member at large for 15 years, including two years as district chair. He has earned the Den Leader’s Training Award, the Cubmaster Award, and the Scouter’s Training Award. He attended National Camping School in 2016 and Philmont Training Center. Additional Scouting recognitions include being named a Baden Powell Fellow, a member of the Throwing Bull Tribe, and Scouter of the Year in 2012. In 2016, he led the Council contingent to Florida Sea Base. He also serves as Council National Camp Accreditation Program chair. He has accompanied his troop or has served as a camp commissioner at more than 20 different BSA camps throughout Pennsylvania. During this time, he also attended World Jamboree in 2007 and High Adventure bases. Gibson’s service in the Masonic order goes back more than 25 years, including Blue Lodge, Tall Cedars, Shrine, York, and Scottish Rite. In these organizations, Gibson has held various leadership positions. He was honored with the 33rd degree, the highest honor that a Mason can be awarded. The Masonic youth organizations, including Rainbow Girls, DeMolay, and Job’s Daughters, have also benefited from his service. He has received the Daniel Carter Beard Masonic Service Award. In his community, he volunteers at various polling places during elections.
