Maya is retiring as full-time facility dog at Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School, and the 10-and-a-half-year-old Labrador retriever was given a sentimental sendoff replete with balloons, photographs, a guest book for students to sign, and, of course, plenty of treats. “I feel like she has uplifted the spirits of everyone,” said school psychologist Kristin Glass. “She

theirs. She gets out and about.” Maya spends her nights at the home of special education consultant Gerald Kauf hold, and Glass is her primary handler while she is in the building. Glass gets emotional when discussing Maya’s impact. “I have loved working with her these past nine years,” said Glass. “She has made my job so much easier. I’m a school psychologist, and kids come in and there’s an instant rapport. She

helps de-stress me as well. She’s very good at knowing when I’m anxious, so she helps me with that. Seeing how much she has touched the lives of students here and has helped kids, I am going to horribly miss her.” Glass noted that Maya will bump into the arm of someone who is struggling and sit by people she senses are stressed. “She has given me a lot of information and really helps me do my job in a way I couldn’t normally do it,”

It’s said that faith will move mountains. Mountain Conquerors participants are neither required to move a mountain nor expected to scale one on their own. Instead they will have an oppor tunity to embark on a p o te nt i a l l y l i fe - a l te r i n g adventure. Mountain Conquerors is an organization founded in 2010 by pastor Matt Kroll. “It is an outdoor camp that teaches

leadership skills, life skills, and grows character,” he said. “It provides the experience of a lifetime. That’s our motto, and that’s what we do.” Until this year, the expedition, which is free thanks to sponsors, was only available for boys ages 13 to 16. MCg, Mountain Conquerors Girls, will have a separate trip for girls in the same age range. Applicants must be residents of Lancaster County. The inaugural MCg, which will be led by Kari Stauffer, will take place Monday, June 30, to See Conquerors pg 5
