Functionality or style?

That was the question that faced Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) High School science students during the annual Cardboard Boat Regatta, which was held on May 26 at the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA’s outdoor pool.

Students were tasked to make a boat out of cardboard and duct tape, no longer or wider than three

“cubes” or cardboard boxes. They were also asked to decorate their boats with a theme, then write and perform a “sea shanty” that went along with their theme.

Some teams, like The Black Pearl (Isaiah Jones, Cole Shehan and Lilah Schwartz), went with functionality. The Black Pearl, with a hastily drawn pirate skull on the side of their boat and an edited version of the “Pirates of the Caribbean” theme song as their

sea shanty, completed the 50-yard race in only about 40 seconds, the fastest time of the morning.

“We don’t need a good theme when we have a good boat,” Jones said.

Students were judged in four categories: song/cheer, distance, design and construction. They were awarded anywhere from three to 10 points in each category, depending on their performance. Off-duty teachers made

up most of the judges.

The Black Pearl’s strategy for their boat construction was simple. “We built it as big as we were allowed to,” said Shehan.

Flag Day is an important moment of remembrance in the United States, especially for those who fought for it.

The Ephrata-Reading Elks Lodge No. 115 and Lancaster Elks No. 134 will host its annual Flag Day ceremony on Sunday, June 14, at 1 p.m. The event will be held at Faithful Living Home,

2015 N. Reading Road, Denver.

This year’s event holds extra value for a multitude of reasons. Along with it being America’s 250th anniversary this summer, Faithful Living has nearly two dozen veterans living at the facility, including 101-year-old World War II veteran John Fry, originally from Brecknock Township and Reamstown.

“I really wanted this to be

something special,” said Pat Conner, exalted ruler of Lodge No. 115. “The importance of this ceremony to our organization is one thing … (the veterans) will get the most out of the service. They understand what the flag means to be an American.”

Local Elks lodges throughout the country and in U.S. territories will celebrate Flag Day on June 14. The Elks are the only fraternal organization to require observance of Flag Day.

The Elks began requiring this in 1911, five years before President Woodrow Wilson established the day by proclamation in 1916, and nearly four decades before President Harry Truman (an Elks member) signed a bill that made the day a national observance.

According to their website, the Elks “invest in their communities through programs that help children grow up healthy and drug-free, meet the needs of today’s veterans, and improve the quality of life.”

The Elks have made more than $12 billion in donations since the organization formed in 1868 out of New

York City. There are almost 2,000 Elks lodges in the nation, with a total membership of about 750,000.

Lodge No. 115 is heavily involved in the community, making large contributions to Penn State Health St. Joseph Medical Center and to a program that provides nurses to those with special needs.

Football and Cheerleading League

The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDSF) has opened registration for the Challenger Football and Cheerleading League for the 2026-27 school year.

The league offers opportunities for people ages 8

to 21 with disabilities in Lancaster and surrounding cities to exercise while having fun. Along with teaching football and cheerleading fundamentals, the league gives players the opportunity to participate in a group activity where they can learn skills, interact socially with other individuals, and make new friends.

The program is also looking for volunteers to be Challenger Buddies to encourage players around the field and help with passing and catching.

Games will take place every Saturday from Aug. 1 to Oct. 10. Volunteers over age 18 must complete a criminal background check and child abuse clearance.

Motorsports Show Marks 25 Years

“This is just a great community- and family-oriented event, and we encourage everyone to come and check it out,” said Dean Hershey, describing the LCBC Motorsports Show. “There are things for everybody to experience and fun for everyone.”

The show will be held at LCBC Manheim, 2392 Mount Joy Road, on Saturday, June 13, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Admission is free for both guests and vehicle entrants.

The LCBC Motorsports Show will feature antique cars, classics, muscle cars, tuners, motorcycles, street rods, lifted trucks and scale model cars from across the region. This year’s featured theme celebrates pickup trucks, with a dedicated showcase area highlighting everything from restored antiques to custom off-road builds.

“We are one of the largest free car shows on the East Coast,” said Hershey, show organizer. “We average around 12,000 people here, and around 1,500 to 1,800 vehicles.”

This is the 25th anniversary of the motorsports show, which began through the men’s ministry at LCBC.

“Our first show was just a couple of grills set up and probably 10 to 20 vehicles,” Hershey recalled. “It was just a fun idea we had, and it’s grown from that.”

He noted that people come from as far away as Florida to participate in the show, adding, “We’ve had people come from 10 different states.”

The show is about more than vehicles, he said. It’s about creating a place where people can come together,

One of the day’s highlights will be a special appearance by the Life Lion helicopter team, Hershey said, noting that people will have the opportunity to watch the helicopter land on-site, meet the crew and experience a live takeoff later in the event.

Trophies will be awarded in a variety of categories for motorcycles, model cars and other vehicles.

“Our trophies are completely unique to all car shows,” Hershey said. “They are created by one of the guys on our show team in the design of an old gas pump with the show’s specific theme vehicle on it. People that are into car shows, they love our trophies.”

All entrants will also be eligible to win a grand prize NAPA one-of-a-kind toolbox, which will be awarded by random drawing.

The general public will have the opportunity to win grand prizes of a Hershey Antique Auto Museum package and a trailer from Keystone Trailers. People can scan a QR code on-site and choose to enter for either prize or for both.

Hershey invites everyone out for the motorsports show.

“You’re going to see some of the coolest vehicles around,” he said. “And if you’re not

as into cars, we have tons of stuff for the whole family to enjoy. Originally, this was strictly focused on car show people, but through the years, we’ve grown it and cultivated it to be a family event with lots of cool things for kids to experience.”

Trivia Event, Moravian Sugar Cake Sale Set

The Moravian Center of Lancaster and Lancaster Moravian Church have announced two events.

Team George Washington (Greg Eckert, Titus Lingerfelter, Ludanine Lozada and Asher Reno) won the award for the best sea shanty, while team Moana (Harry Skiles, Rylee Diller, Jaleigh Gore and Riley Lefever) received the Titanic award, sinking in instantaneous fashion.

The Moravian Center of Lancaster will host Baby Boomer Music Trivia on Saturday, June 13, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor. Doors will open at 3 p.m., and refreshments will be available for purchase.

Fundraising Campaign Expands Housing

Bridge of Hope has announced the successful completion of its $9.3 million Making Room comprehensive campaign, a milestone that is already expanding affordable housing access and strengthening long-term stability for families facing homelessness across Lancaster County, Chester County, and beyond.

Originally launched with an $8.4 million goal, the campaign was expanded as economic pressures increased the number of local families experiencing housing instability. At the same time, new opportunities emerged to secure additional homes and respond more urgently to the need.

Through strengthened whole-family support, Bridge of Hope has sought to reduce isolation, address the emotional toll of homelessness through mental health-informed care, and surround parents and children with neighboring volunteers who walk alongside them as they stabilize, heal, and rebuild.

In Lancaster County, campaign investments resulted in six affordable housing units located in Lititz, Manheim, Paradise Township, and Lancaster Township - communities where rising rents have increasingly outpaced wages. The locations of several of the homes will help children remain connected to their schools, routines, and support systems during times of transition.

The campaign also helped launch the Bridgeport Housing collaboration with Chestnut Housing, Forest Hills Mennonite Church, and Conestoga Valley SEEDS. The partnership aims to add 12 to 15 affordable homes by 2027-28, expanding the community’s long-term capacity to respond to family homelessness.

Beyond individual homes, the Making Room campaign strengthened Lancaster County’s housing ecosystem by expanding creative strategies that help families facing homelessness move more quickly from crisis into housing, such as growing landlord partnerships, using master leasing and lease guarantees, strengthening cross-sector collaboration, and increasing rental assistance.

The campaign also reinforced the supports that help families remain housed. Families often enter permanent housing

Together, these efforts contributed to a 65% increase in Bridge of Hope families served in Lancaster County. While the campaign was a success, the work continues. Bridge of Hope continues to expand housing solutions, strengthen pathways to employment and financial stability, mobilize more neighboring volunteers, and prepare for a new phase of work focused on longterm community impact.

Resource Sharing App Launched

A new resource called the Lancaster County Food Exchange is available to help food banks, pantries, and community organizations share resources, reduce waste, and get food to families in need. The organization’s purpose is to “make sure no good food goes unused and no family goes hungry.”

Terry Kile had the idea for the food exchange when The Loft Community Partnership in Millersville received an

overage of 4,800 clamshells of blueberries. Kile, a local tech entrepreneur, created the Lancaster County Food Exchange mobile web application using coding and some artificial intelligence. Incorporated as Food Exchange Resources in June 2025 and certified as a 501(c)(3) organization by the Internal Revenue Service, the Lancaster County Food Exchange was beta-tested by several food pantry directors and employees prior to its launch on Jan. 15.

Club Awards Scholarships

The Democratic Club of Willow Valley (DCWV) awarded two scholarships on May 14. The scholarships were presented to graduating seniors from Lampeter-Strasburg High School during the Senior Awards ceremony at the high school.

Audrey Wieand received the $1,000 Involvement Scholarship based on her work in the community. She plans to attend Grove City College to study

middle level education.

The Thaddeus Stevens $1,000 scholarship sponsored by the DCWV was awarded to Brooke Hess. Hess plans to attend Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology to study advanced welding fabrication technology. The scholarships are awarded annually by the DCWV to support local high school students in their further education as they enter adulthood.

The Lancaster County Food Exchange aims to help stretch limited resources further and strengthen collaboration among food assistance providers countywide. Rock Ford Posts Programs

Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will offer a lecture, “When the Declaration of Independence Was News,” on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. The program is part of the America250 Lecture Series and will take place in the Langmuir Education Room, located on the first floor of the Rock Ford Barn.

Proclaiming independence to the world was messy, both politically and materially. The Continental Congress declared independence, but the work of spreading that news involved printers, post riders, ship captains, civic leaders, soldiers, clerks, orators, preachers, diplomats, and translators. Emily Sneff will speak about how news of the Declaration of Independence was spread through the United States and across the Atlantic in the summer and fall of 1776.

A historian of early America and an expert on the Declaration of Independence, Sneff serves as a consulting curator for museum exhibitions commemorating the historic document’s 250th anniversary. She received a doctorate in history from William & Mary.

Ford will welcome Forbes Road Frolic for a concert of Colonial Era tavern music on Tuesday, June 16, at 6 p.m.

Forbes Road Frolic seeks to replicate the colloquial music that was likely to be heard in a tavern in British America from the 1750s through the Revolutionary War. Dressed in period attire, the duo’s members perform using instruments that are descended from those of the 17th and 18th centuries. Forbes Road Frolic previously performed at Historic Rock Ford during its Lafayette Day celebration and Yuletide special event in 2025. The performance will be held on the piazza of the Hand Mansion with seating on the lawn. The performance area will open at 5:15 p.m., and seating is on a first-come, first-served basis. Grants Awarded for Programs Aiding Youths

Advoz: Mediation & Restorative Services and the Touchstone Foundation were awarded $500,616 in grant funding to help expand their youth programs aimed at reducing student conflict and improving student mental health, respectively. The competitive grants, approved by the School Safety and Security Committee under the Pennsylvania Commission on

Crime and Delinquency, are part of more than $64 million awarded to organizations across the state.

The Advoz and Touchstone grants were recently announced by state Rep. Nikki Rivera.

Advoz will use its $244,850 to expand its Restorative School Program at J.P. McCaskey High School in Lancaster city. The grant funds will cover the partial salaries

and benefits of the executive director, director of training, and restorative schools practitioner. Additionally, funding will be used for advertising and marketing expenses, rent, a laptop, general operating expenses, and information technology support. The program serves approximately 750 students annually, teaching them skills in communication, problem solving, emotional regulation, and constructive dialogue.

The Touchstone Foundation will use its $255,766 award to expand and strengthen Rise Above, a youth mental wellness initiative serving approximately 1,120 students and young adults ages 12 to 26 across Lancaster County. The funds will pay a partial amount of the current program manager’s time, pay for a program assistant and an operations manager and accountant, and support employee benefits and travel to school districts

within Lancaster County. Funding will also be used to support program evaluation led by Millersville University’s Carrie Smith, as well as communications-related costs such as photography and video documentation. Lancaster County, coordinate pickups and deliveries, and view real-time shared inventory for better planning and distribution. Needs may include food and personal care products. As of May 5, the Lancaster County Food Exchange served 32 local agencies and more than 80 volunteers.

Future plans include expanding partnerships with growers, manufacturers, and distributors; integrating additional features for reporting and logistics; and onboarding more community groups that serve local families.

Initial support organizations included Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, Midwest Food Bank, and Community Action Partnership of Lancaster County (CAP of Lancaster County). Food Exchange Resources is presently served by a board of directors, including Dana D. Myers, director of charitable giving for Brittany’s Hope; Amanda Frankeny, director of food justice at CAP of Lancaster County; Sandra Valdez, chief human services officer with the Spanish American Civic Organization (SACA); Willeta Calvin, community school director at Bright Side Opportunities Center; and Janice Reinke, manager of food procurement and distribution at Midwest Food Bank. Additional support has been provided by Jenna Graeff, executive director of The Loft Community Partnership; Cindi Pasi, senior retail donation manager with the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank; and Paige McFarling, executive director at Lancaster County Food Hub.
