FoodStock Music Festival Moves To Lancaster By Dayna M. Reidenouer

The sixth annual FoodStock Music Festival, a fundraiser to fight hunger, will be held at Buchanan Park, 901 Buchanan Ave., Lancaster, on Saturday, June 22, from noon to 7 p.m. During the event, attendees may enter to win prizes, shop at a craft show, listen to a variety of music, and purchase food and beverages. Children age 12 and under will be able to enter for free when accompanied by adults who have purchased tickets. The event has been moved to Lancaster from Manheim so that organizers can take full control of the event - the previous venue controlled the layout and concessions - and to ensure that it is familyinclusive and affordable. “Our goal is to maximize attendance and, therefore, maximize the amount of money we can raise for hunger-fighting

organizations in our community,” explained Jack Fliszar, FoodStock promotion and marketing coordinator. In the past five years, FoodStock has raised approximately $30,000. Fliszar noted that the event was created by Tom Hayden, who worked for the United States Postal Service and saw firsthand the success of the National Association of Letter Carriers’ Stamp Out Hunger Food Drive. Hayden wanted to do more, so he created FoodStock Music Festival, which provides funds for local food banks and pantries. “Food insecurity affects people and families from all age groups, and summer months are especially tough,” Fliszar said. A recipe, when made correctly, will have just the right quantities of ingredients in the right combination. Likewise, Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for Occupational Development Center (ODC) and organizer of the organization’s second Food Truck Fest, has a recipe for the event. “ We want the right mix,”

explained Mueller. “We want a good variety. We will have a little bit of everything for everybody.” This year’s Food Truck Fest will feature 16 trucks - twice as many as the 2018 event, according to Mueller - when it is held at Stauffer Park, 1241 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, on Saturday, June 8, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. There is no admission charge to attend. The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) announced the winners of its 2019 Safety Training and Evaluation (STEP) Awards and recognized its 2019 OSHA Partners on May 1. Representatives from several member companies accepted their awards at the ABC Safety Awards Dinner. The anchor of ABC’s Safety Awards program is STEP, which provides companies a structured approach to benchmark and improve their safety efforts. The goal of the program is to provide an organized approach to analyze and further develop a company’s safety and loss prevention. Participating ABC member firms measure their safety processes and policies on 20 key components through a detailed questionnaire with the goal of implementing or enhancing safety programs that reduce jobsite incidence rates. Participating companies score their level of achievement for each component on a weighted point scale and document their incident rates.

Companies receive a recognition level of Diamond, Platinum, Gold, Silver, Bronze, or Participant based on this data. Music In The Orchard Series Planned Music in the Orchard will return to the 1719 Hans Herr House and Museum, 1849 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street, for another summer highlighting local artists. Concerts will be held every other Saturday from June 8 through Aug. 3, beginning at 6 p.m. in the Herr House orchard. Tickets may be purchased on-site, and children under age 12 will be admitted free. No advance registration is required. Chairs are not provided. The Harrisburg Mandolin Ensemble will kick off the series on June 8. The mandolin quintet performs an eclectic blend of acoustic music including original tunes and arrangements of standards. It draws from a variety of genres including jazz, bluegrass, and swing. Folk-style performer Matt Miskie will open. The second concert in the series, on June 22, will feature Lancaster-based Denison Witmer. Witmer catalogs the

experiences of young adulthood in honest detail through a laid-back, 1970s California pop production and guitar work. Singer-songwriter Matt Wheeler, also from Lancaster, will open the concert. July 6 will see The Jayplayers on the orchard’s stage. This Americana act, based around the songwriting of Keeley McCue and Chris Weidensaul, performs as a full electric band. It was the 2018 recipient of the PHLive Center Stage annual music award in the Country/Folk category. Three Strands, influenced by early gospel and blues as well as the American folk revival, will open. Michaela McClain will perform the fourth concert on July 20. McClain lends facets of soul, folk, jazz, and pop in her original music and unique covers. The Columbia-based duo SweetLife will open with modern hits, traditional standards, hymns, and its own songs. The series will conclude on Aug. 3 with a performance by Smokehouse 4, which will bring a mix of roots rock, blues, funk and some New Orleans soul. The noted Native American musician Terry Strongheart will open. Food and beverages will be available, including Herr House smoked sausage. Attendees are also welcome to bring a

affairs for TSCT. “Adults are coming back to school … many of whom thought they would never go to a college.” Bianchi explained that the roots of the FMT program were cultivated by William Griscom, president of TSCT, who recognized a need for skilled technicians in the facilities maintenance field. Seed money for the program was provided by the BB&T Economic Growth Fund in partnership with the Lancaster County Community Foundation. PNC Bank also contributed to help buy students’ tools. Tec Centro, located at 102 Chester St., Lancaster, provides vocational training, and representatives of the school had been working to develop a facilities manager program when Thaddeus Stevens College received the grant money. A majority of the classes are offered at the Tec Centro campus. Marlyn Barbosa, director of Tec Centro, said the partnership has been beneficial to students. “(The partnership) has provided more access to community members to attend a competitive school like TSCT,” said Barbosa. “(Students) can get their training in the neighborhood, and it has allowed nontraditional students adults in the workforce - to gain additional skills to help them (with employment),” she noted Instructor Tim Draper said that the six-month program requires students to be dedicated and focused. Students receive occupational safety training followed by four weeks each of

from pg 1 instruction in disciplines including carpentry, plumbing, electrical systems, HVAC, and masonry. “They finish with a six-week hands-on program where we do a live project,” explained Draper. Students who pass the course receive an OSHA certificate and powder-actuated tool certification, along with forklift training. They may also be tested to handle refrigerant. “The instructors are the key to connecting with the students, delivering the program, and coaching them,” Bianchi noted. In addition to Draper, professors include Josephine Tyndall for plumbing; Mark Gardner for masonry; Ray Buckwalter and his son Joel, who team-teach electrical systems; Joel Charles and John Coyle at HallerU; and Dave Sload and Stephanie Larkin at ABC Keystone. Members of the recent cohort worked to complete their on-thejob training at the building that will become the Heritage Press Education Center. The .918 Club will use the completed building to preserve and promote letterpress printing. “It will be a hands-on learning center for school groups, church groups, and community groups,” said Ken Kulinkowski, .918 Club president, who is thrilled at the progress the students have made at the building. “In the six weeks, they have accomplished as much as we did in four years,” he noted, adding that the group plans to open the building for the Printer’s Fair to be held Friday through Sunday, Sept. 20 through 22.

Students in the Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology Facilities Maintenance program worked on remodeling the building that will become the Heritage Press Education Center. The students who have completed the six-month program, which is run in partnership with Tec Centro, will graduate on June 7. Draper noted that students who complete the course may decide to go further in one of the fields they have been introduced to in the program, or they may opt to look for employment with management companies for shopping centers and apartment buildings. Latoff Advocacy Award. The award recognizes an individual who is an active policymaker with PA Bankers, an outspoken and successful advocate for the industry, and a supporter of the Pennsylvania Bankers Public Affairs Committee (PaBPAC). On Saturday, June 15, members of the Lancaster Throwback Juggling Club will host a free event to celebrate World Juggling Day. The 10th consecutive event will take place at Long’s Park on Harrisburg Pike in Lancaster from 1 to 4 p.m. on the lawn near the amphitheater, weather permitting. Signs and red balloons will direct attendees. Area residents are invited to stop by for free juggling lessons and to try out various circus skills. There is no fee to participate, and some juggling props will be available for use. A juggling workshop will be held from 2 to 3 p.m. and will teach the basic juggling pattern and some tricks for advanced learners. The worldwide event has been organized by the International Jugglers’

Mueller shared that the Reunion food truck, a nonprofit entity started by Community Action Program, will sell soul food at

For entertainment, organizers have engaged two live bands to return to perform. “Ink Vault will play cover songs from famous artists such as Dave Matthews,” said Mueller, who added that the band has a bluegrass feel and will play familiar songs from the 1970s through the present day. Local singer and songwriter Mark DeRose will also perform. Because many of the 2,000 attendees at last year’s fest brought along their dogs, ODC has asked the Lancaster SPCA to be on-site with puppies for adoption, and organizers hope to have a vendor selling pet items join in for the day. “We are partnering with Manheim Township Recreation Commission for this event,” noted Mueller, who added that a Touch-A-Truck event, which was part of the 2018 fest, will also be held. “We will have a police car, a fire engine, an ambulance, and some big earth-moving equip-

The Thaddeus Stevens STEM truck will be at the event with a robot to demonstrate, and the ODC Auxiliary will hold a plant sale, featuring hanging plants, in the park. “We will have face painting and caricature drawing,” added Mueller. Additionally, a mobile bike shop will be on-site with information on bike safety and local trails to ride. Prizes and giveaways will be a focus of this year’s fest, and Mueller said that ODC has received many donations of items from local area businesses. “We will have a new bicycle, a couple of bags of items from a local dental office, (and) hair care products, and we will have restaurant gift cards,” said Mueller, who also listed family passes to the Overlook pool and a round of golf among the prizes. ODC, located at 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, has been helping individuals with developmental disabilities gain the skills to do productive work for more than 70 years. The local charitable giving circle 100 Women Who Care Lancaster County (100WWC) will relaunch its organization with a celebratory evening at Tellus360, 24 E. have always been more than a job, and she attends the First Communion Mass for every student. Just out of Shippensburg University, Scaccia began teaching first grade at Mill Road Elementary in Elizabethtown. After five years, she relocated with her husband, Peter, several times but continued teaching religious education for her church or as a substitute in local schools. When she returned to Lancaster in 1995, she worked in the library at St. Anne School, which her children attended. She started at Resurrection in 1998. Scaccia received a master’s degree in education from Temple University and also earned a reading specialist certification from Millersville University. She will miss reading to students. She has made a tradition of reading favorites: “Charlotte’s Web” starts the year; “The Night Before Christmas” comes in December. Each day, she reads the same story by Clement C. Moore but illustrated by a different person. Students talk about the pictures and how they might draw them. Her devotion to teaching spills over to organizing special events such as the Day of Sharing, the annual giving tree and an Olympic ceremony when the Olympics take place. Pictures of her annual field trips, especially those to Central Market in Lancaster and a gnomethemed location in Kirkwood, get dozens of nostalgic comments and likes when posted on social media. Scaccia received a Golden Apple award in 2007 from the Harrisburg Diocese. She plans to remain in Lancaster, spend more time with her seven grandchildren and travel with her husband.
