Strasburg Heritage Society will hold Secret Garden Tour BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

T

he Strasburg Heritage Society’s Secret Garden Tour will return to Strasburg from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 8, and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 9. Discounted tickets are available to purchase online and at various shops in Strasburg until Thursday, June 6, including Speckled Hen and Main Street Antiques. Additional tickets will be available on the day of the event at Strasburg Presbyterian Church, 101 S. Decatur St. Each ticket holder may attend one or both days of the tour, which will be held rain or shine. Upon picking up a ticket, tourists will receive a list of all locations included in the tour, and they may visit the locations in any order. Owners of the featured gardens will be present to point out the qualities that make their

property unique and to answer tourists’ questions. This year’s Secret Garden Tour will include nine private gardens throughout Strasburg, as well as the community park. The Heritage Society revealed that the garden at Gonder Mansion, located on West Main Street, will also be included in the tour. The Queen Anne-style estate was built by Benjamin Gonder in the early 20th century, and it features elaborate Victorian-era architecture and a large garden. “Anyone in the Strasburg area who wishes to share a garden with the community are welcome to be in the tour,” said Heather Reynolds, who co-chairs the event with Anna Ranck. “It’s a lot of fun, and it’s a neat opportunity to bring people into our community.” The proceeds of the Secret Garden Tour will benefit the See Garden tour pg 2 A garden at the historic Gonder Mansion on West Main Street will be featured in this year’s tour.

One hundred original pieces of art by Ron Ettelman will be auctioned at 6 p.m. on Thursday, June 6, at Boltz Auction Company, 3601 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Attendees will have an opportunity to bid on various artworks created by the prolific Mountville artist, and proceeds from the auction will benefit the Lancaster Museum of Art, the Demuth Foundation and the Ware Center at Millersville University. A reception will start at

5 p.m., and a preview will take place on Wednesday, June 5, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is the second time Ron Ettelman has organized an auction for his work. The first auction was held in 2021 after he and his wife, Virginia, closed their custom frame shop and art gallery, Dream Framer and the Ron Ettelman Gallery, in Mountville. Ron and Virginia operated the business for 47 years. After closing the doors to Dream Framer, Ron needed to move his large collection in a short See Art auction pg 5

Art exhibit pays homage to pets everywhere BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD

Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster, recently held its sixth annual We Love Our Pets show. The exhibit opened on May 3, and it featured more than 170 pieces of artwork by pet owners and artists from every school district in the county to celebrate the unique bond between humans and their animal companions. The show will remain at the gallery until the end of May.

The opening reception was attended by veterinarians and vendors of pet accessories and other animal-related products, as well as representatives of the Sebastian Foundation for Animal Rescue. Every year, Mulberry Art Studios uses its We Love Our Pets show to support the Sebastian Foundation by donating a portion of the proceeds from art sales to the organization. The Sebastian Foundation helps to locate homes for Violet van der Meij (left) and her animals throughout Lancaster mother, Jen van der Meij, each
