The Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, will host a series of events this summer, beginning with a chicken barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, June 1, and a Blast-Off Party on Saturday, June 8. The barbecue will be sold at the Strasburg Jaycee Park, 218B Miller St., Strasburg, from 9 a.m. until gone. Customers may purchase meals containing a half-chicken, a potato, a roll and butter, applesauce, a cookie, and a beverage, and they may also buy chicken only. A drive-through will be set up to expedite sales, but folks may park and eat on-site. Tickets may be purchased in advance at the library or at the event. The proceeds from the barbecue sale will support the Summer Reading Program, which has a theme of “The Universe of Stories.”

Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce (SLCCC) members are looking forward to hosting the eighth annual document shredding event rain or shine on Friday, June 7, from 1 to 4 p.m. The event raises funds for student scholarships. “It’s fun. We’re all volunteers,” said event chair Holly Filius. “It really is giving back to the community so kids have the opportunity to meet some of their expenses.” For a donation, members of the public may bring sensitive documents to the shredding truck, which will be parked at the site of the former Burkholder’s Used Cars, 2539 N. Willow Street Pike (Route 222), Willow Street. Vehicles should enter on Beaver Valley Pike (Route 272. Folks with more than 10 boxes of documents are considered See Shredding Event pg 9
The outdoor amphitheater of Strasburg Community Park will be the setting for a series of concerts this summer beginning with Mark DeRose and Dreadnot on June 8. Sounds of Strasburg, the annual series of free concerts in Strasburg Community Park, will begin with performances by Mark DeRose and Dreadnot on Saturday, June 8, at 6:30 p.m. The first set of the evening will feature a child-focused program by DeRose. DeRose has been a solo artist in the
children’s entertainment market for many years and enjoys communicating his encouraging message to young listeners through regular shows in the Pennsylvania Library Summer Reading Program and other opportunities. “There’s a focus on space, so we got a lot of new books on planets, astronauts, and space exploration,” said executive director Kristin Fernitz. The Blast-Off Party will launch the Summer Reading Program. It will be held free of charge on the lawn in front of the library from 10 a.m. to noon on June 8. There will be games, prizes, a bounce house, and hand-dipped ice cream. Children may also pick up their reading logs and get started on their summer reading, Fernitz said. One unique feature of the Blast-Off Party will be the introduction of the new American Girl doll, Luciana Vega, who is an astronaut. Thanks to a donor, Luciana has a space suit that will go with her when she is borrowed from the library. At the party, children may enter to win the opportunity to be the first person to borrow the doll. See Library Events pg 6

The top seed and undefeated Lady Pioneers opened District Three 5A playoffs with a home game against No. 16 Mechanicsburg last Tuesday, May 21. And while the Pioneers pounded out 17 hits in a 15-9 win, this one was closer than it looked. L-S took control early, scoring three times in the second inning but the visitors countered, scoring two runs with two outs in the top of the third. With five hits and two walks, the hosts took their biggest lead of the game with a five-run fourth. A Chloe Blantz bases loaded, two run single opened the scoring while Daisy Frank’s run scoring base hit pushed the lead to 8-2. Mechanicsburg got one back in the fifth, scoring on a rare Pioneer infield error, but the home team countered with two more in the bottom half, pushing the lead to 10-3. But then things got interesting. Mechanicsburg finally solved Brynn Baker, connecting for a leadoff double and three straight base hits and head coach Gene Charles elected to make a change in the circle. Enter Keiva Middleton. The freshman hit the first batter she faced, gave up a three run triple and then a full count walk before working three straight outs, including a sac fly, and the next thing you know, it’s a 10-9 ballgame. “We wanted to save Brynn a bit,”

Once she settled down a little she was fine.” Not to be out done, L-S countered with their own rally, scoring five runs on five hits, including a two run double by Blantz and a two run base hit by Middleton, who retired the side in the seventh with two pop outs and a strikeout to end the game. Julz Garber, Summer Peters and Chloe Blantz, the Pioneers 1 through 3 hitters, all went 3-for-5 and combined for nine RBI’s and seven runs scored.
Tayrn Hostetter walked three times and scored three runs. The team also scored a run in every spot in the lineup. Next up for L-S was a quarterfinals tilt opposite Exeter Township Thursday at Millersville University’s Seaber Softball Stadium. In a game that played out similarly to the Mechanicsburg game, L-S held a 3-0 lead before the Eagles slowly worked their way back and the next thing you know, its extra innings. the ninth. “Wow. What a game,” said Charles. “I would have liked to increase that 30 lead but then their bats woke up. I thought Brynn (3K, 2W) moved the ball when she had to and we did play good defense behind her, though we could have handled the bunts better.” Those bunts were the key to starting Exeter’s momentum. Down 3-0 after four complete, the No. 8 seed Eagles closed the lead to one with back-to-back, two out, run scoring bunts. Peters’ looked to spark the Pioneers in the bottom half of the inning, crushing a lead-off homer, high over the right field fence, but L-S popped up three times after that. Exeter sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the sixth and knotted the score at 4-4 on the strength of five hits and a passed ball. “They actually out hit us 14-11,” noted Charles. “That’s the first time that has happened this year. It’s also the first time we went into extra innings. In the long run, games like this will build character and make us better.” L-S put two runners on in the home half of the sixth but the Eagles turned a double play to get out of the inning. Neither team threatened in the seventh and Exeter put one on with one out in the eighth. A diving

The Pioneers looked to grab the win in the bottom half but, with runners on second and third and with one out, a strikeout and a groundout sent the game to the ninth. Exeter again put the pressure on. They bunted their way to first and, with two outs, blooped a shot to left field. An intentional walk loaded the bases before Blantz snagged a liner at short to end the inning and set the stage for her game-winning hit. L-S opened the scoring in the second inning courtesy of Jocelyn Branco’s two run double to center field. They made it 3-0 in the third. Peters reached with a full count double and scored on Baker’s single down the third base line. Two pop ups, however, ended the rally. “Summer came up big today, going 3-for-5 with two doubles and that

Mary Peticca made 20 saves in goal. “Mary played an exceptional game,” lauded Ovchinnikoff. The loss dropped the Pioneers into a battle for third place opposite No. 2 seed Cocalico (15-5) Wednesday at Lower Dauphin Middle School. Another slow start proved to be the Pioneers downfall in a 10-7 defeat. After playing even up in the second half, it was a 5-2 first half deficit that proved to be the difference. Kimmel notched a second straight hat trick and Smith followed with two goals and three assists. Riley Dawson also scored one goal. The Pioneers will compete in the PIAA 2A tournament this week as the fourth seed out of District Three.

Last week their road to the district final included top seed York Catholic. At Hershey High School last Monday, L-S found itself in a hole too deep to dig out of and suffered a 15-8 2A semifinals loss. The No. 4 Pioneers, behind Kelsey Kimmel’s hat trick, fell behind 9-4 in the first half but couldn’t make up the difference after the break. “We came out flat and that resulted in York Catholic scoring five goals in the first five minutes of the game,” said head coach Claudia Ovchinnikoff. “We settled down defensively after that but could not do the same on the offensive end. After the intermission, DeRose will be joined on stage by the band Dreadnot, which will present a high-energy performance of upbeat, feel-good music that is filled with rootsy, blueeyed soul and classic rock of the late 1960s and 1970s. The band’s goal is to spread a little joy through music. “This will be a great concert for fans
of Van Morrison, Dave Matthews, the Doobie Brothers, the Allman Brothers Band, and The Band,” said Mark Arbogast, president of the Strasburg Community Parks Foundation, which sponsors the concert series. “DeRose and the band performed last summer, and we had many requests for them to return again to our outdoor stage, so we are very excited that they will be on hand to open our summer concert series.” Concert guests are advised to bring blankets and lawn chairs for seating on the soft-turf and terraced amphitheater. Coolers and alcoholic beverages will be prohibited. Those who wish to eat a pre-show meal al fresco may use picnic tables in and beside the park’s pavilion. “We encourage our visitors to

The Lancaster Downtowners, working with the city, will hold the catered event in the Atrium of the Ware Center, 42 N. The idea for the concert came from Kiana Corley, a singer-songwriter. When she heard that the community center had needed to cut back its meal service from five to two days per week, she told her mother, Maria Thompson Corley, a Juilliard-trained concert pianist, that she
Born in Chester County, Ruth moved by the early 20th century to Gap, where he had a blacksmith and machine shop. The son of a South Carolina slave, he was by the early 1920s a well-known and capable blacksmith to Amish, Mennonite, and other farm families of eastern Lancaster and western Chester counties. His genius for solving mechanical problems led him to design and patent a machine feeder used between the thresher and straw baler, a cinderspreading truck, self-raising elevator, and other machines. He also followed in his father’s footsteps as a lay leader of his church. Hopkins will talk about the Underground Railroad and displaced AfricanAmericans, Quaker ethics and abolitionism, and Pennsylvania German agricultural and work craft technology, and he will suggest how the interplay made this region of the state a continuing success of William Penn’s experiment. After the speakers’ presentations, Bruce Bomberger, curator, will be available at the permanent agricultural exhibit in the Bitzer Building at Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, Landis Valley Road off Oregon Pike, Lancaster, to interpret and answer questions about machinery built by Ruth that is on display. The SLCCC aims to annually award three $1,000 scholarships to local graduating seniors to support business-oriented plans, whether that is attending college or a technical or trade school or even becoming an entrepreneur. Lampeter-Strasburg, Solanco, and Penn Manor students are eligible for the scholarships, but no one from Penn Manor has applied in recent years. In addition to supporting local youths, the shredding event is a service to the community by providing a secure way to dispose of sensitive materials. “People can bring more and shred it faster than doing it at home,” Filius said. “It’s a really inexpensive way to shred confidential documents.” Typically, between 10,000 and 15,000 pounds of materials are processed during the event. “We get a lot of bulk shredding from law offices and home care too,” Filius commented. At the event, SLCCC members will unload boxes from vehicles in a drivethrough line. Folks who want to watch their documents enter the shredder may park their cars to the side. The SLCCC serves businesses, nonprofits, and individuals primarily south of Route 30. Membership is open to anyone who has an interest in that region, Filius said. Currently, the SLCCC has just under 200 members. There is a fee to join. Guests are welcome to attend the group’s meetings, which are held at 7:30 a.m. on the second Thursday of every month at the Quarryville Library, 357 Buck Road, Quarryville. Guest speakers typically present on business-related topics. “Networking is great because it’s a small chamber,” Filius said. “There’s a lot of intra-chamber business,” added board member Mandy Leggett, sharing how SLCCC members like to refer clients to other members. In addition to hosting the shredding event, the SLCCC supports the Solanco Fair and assists the parade committee and hosts an annual Christmas tree lighting in Quarryville on the first Friday in December. More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on hearthealthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. The event, hosted by radio personality Lisa Landis-Blowers, also included a silent auction, a mini manicure station provided by the Lancaster School of Cosmetology, and a heart-healthy lunch. Office Of Aging To Offer Vouchers In cooperation with the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, Lancaster County Office of Aging will begin distributing 2019 Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program vouchers to eligible people on Wednesday, June 5. The nutrition vouchers can be exchanged for Pennsylvania-grown fruits and vegetables through November at participating farmers markets and roadside stands. To be eligible, an individual must be at least 60 years of age, reside in Lancaster County, and have an annual household income of less than $22,311 for one person or less than $30,044 for two. Those living in nursing homes or other residential facilities where meals are provided are not eligible for this program. All distributions will take place from
