TMemorial Day Parade and Service Set

he Strasburg Area Sertoma Club, in cooperation with the former Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Paul R. Strubel Post No. 8710, will sponsor a parade and memorial service on Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, to honor the sacrifices of deceased veterans, service members missing in action, retired veterans, and those who are currently serving in all branches of the United States armed forces. Parade formation will begin at 8 a.m. along Clearview Drive in Strasburg, and the parade will commence at 9 a.m. The Memorial Day service will begin at 10:30 a.m. at the Strasburg Cemetery, 50 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Strasburg

has a long tradition of honoring fallen heroes, started 79 years ago by the VFW members.

The honorary parade grand marshal will be Doug Houck, an Army veteran and longtime community volunteer. Community service organizations, Scout troops, and church groups will have floats in the parade, and the Lampeter-Strasburg High School marching unit will perform.

“Each year, veterans and young service persons arrive and offer to participate in the parade by walking the route or riding in a classic car. It is truly a community event,” noted Brian Barr, parade chairman with the Strasburg Area Sertoma Club.

In the developmental world of nonprofits, the Lancaster Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (LHCC) is in its infancy; it’s a newborn. But in a short period of time, LHCC has laid a stable foundation upon which growth can be nurtured.

Essential for continued maturation are public awareness and community support. Once it does blossom, LHCC will connect resources to those in need, unlock the economic potential of the local Latino community and make Lancaster County a better place to live.

“It’s in its baby stages, but people are beginning to reach out,” said Esther DeWoody, the founder and president of LHCC. “The mission is to reach the Latino business owners and

educate members of the Latino community about the community resources available to them, so they can do better in education and financially. We want Latino business owners to know that it’s possible, that they can do it. People are willing to go the extra mile to welcome the Latino community and work with them.”

After putting thoughts into motion in April of 2025 and launching the organization’s website in November, DeWoody formally founded LHCC in March of this year. DeWoody is currently operating the fledgling organization from her Manheim Township home but hopes to move into a more permanent brickand-mortar office by the end of this summer and then eventually add staff.

“We have to unite,” she added. “We have to want to make things better as a community, and not just Latinos. Everybody sees the need for this. It’s something people have been looking for.”

Part of LHCC’s immediate future is a culturally based, Latino-themed event in Lancaster city on Friday, June 5. Though some of the details are still being finalized, LHCC has already secured sponsorships for the event.

In addition, LHCC is also planning a community outreach gathering in August.

“My favorite part is that (LHCC) will help people in

the Latino community,” said DeWoody. “This will better their lives because of the resources they don’t know exist. The only requirement for membership is that you have to be able to give back to the community in some way. I want people to work together as a family. I don’t want them to look at each other as members; I want them to look at each other as family members.”

As part of its organizing, LHCC has been working with similar organizations, like the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce and the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce.

Currently, LHCC counts 25 individuals as part of its membership.

“They’re leaders who can be mentors and who can be teachers,” said DeWoody. “They’re strong leaders from Lancaster County who are willing to work with the community, and they don’t have to be Latinos.”

According to census data, more than 65,000 Latinos reside in Lancaster County, and Hispanics represent about 12% of the county’s total population. The highest concentration of Latinos resides in the city, where they make up about 40% of Lancaster’s population.

Data about the number of Latino-owned businesses in Lancaster County is less clear.

“I feel like there are voices that aren’t at the table, and I want to be their voice,” said DeWoody. “I want to elevate their voices. It’s about community opportunities for our community. I want to build something where people feel supported and where they can grow together. I want people lifting each other up. There are big organizations out there who are helping the community, and I think we can work better together.

Museum Announces Summer Programs

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania has announced that in addition to regular interpretation of the museum’s rolling stock, visitor services staff will expand programming with a consistent schedule this summer, allowing guests to plan their visits around recurring programs. The schedule of recurring programs will run from Memorial Day, Monday, May 25, through Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 7.

A daily 15-minute orientation tour will be available at 10:30 a.m. on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. The tours will be subject to staff and volunteer availability on Saturdays and will not be available on Sundays. Depending on visitation volume and interest, group sizes may be limited. During the tours, which will depart from the museum’s lobby and traverse the observation bridge, a trained guide will share information about the history of the museum, the museum’s collection, and what equipment may be available for guests to step inside. The guide will also answer any questions regarding the museum or its collection. The tours are free with museum admission.

Tours of the museum’s restoration shop will be available on Thursdays at noon and Sundays at 1 p.m.,

and they will depart from the museum lobby. During the 60-minute tours, a trained guide will tell visitors about the process of restoration, what it takes to successfully restore historical equipment, the plans for future restoration, and previously completed restoration projects. Visitors will get an up-close view of the current projects, as well as a peek into the outdoor yard, subject to weather conditions. The tours are restricted to visitors age 12 and over, and group sizes are limited. The tours are available for a fee separate from museum admission.

Outdoor yard tours will be available daily and are free with admission. They will

depart from the museum lobby. Due to the ongoing construction of the museum’s new roundhouse, access to the outdoor yard is currently restricted. To provide access to the yard for visitors, staff members and volunteers have been trained to provide escorted tours within the accessible area of the yard. The tours will vary in length and will typically last between 15 and 20 minutes. Tours are subject to the availability of both staff and volunteers, as well as the conditions of the yard and the weather. The museum recommends calling in advance to inquire about tour times and availability.

An arm of the Lancaster County Workforce Development Board, PA CareerLink Lancaster County, which is located at 1046 Manheim Pike, Lancaster, is a job center that provides locals opportunities to improve themselves financially, to enhance their lives and to self-actualize. PA CareerLink Lancaster County’s hours of operation are Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Wednesdays from 8:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

“A lot of people come to us thinking we’re the unemployment office, but we are not,” said Roggenbaum. “Our goal is to get individuals back to work or further their skills for their current job. We’re here to help people enter or re-enter the local work force. There are a variety of ways to do that.”

PA CareerLink Lancaster County offers self-service job searches, case management services, mock interviews, résumé assistance, training, workshops and

youth and adult programming. PA CareerLink also hosts job fairs and works with local employers to sponsor job fairs.

“I used to have a boss who told me, ‘Hey, a job or having a career is an important part of people’s identities,’” said Roggenbaum. “When you meet people for the first time, it’s not too far into the conversation when you ask them, ‘What do you do for a living?’”

PA CareerLink collaborates with numerous Lancaster County employers, who can post current openings on the organization’s website free of charge. PA CareerLink also works with human service agencies, manufacturing agencies, staffing agencies and the Lancaster County Assistance Office.

It has its finger on the pulse of the employment community.

“A lot of these people have lost their jobs or need some sort of assistance,” said Roggenbaum. “We have individuals looking for training. We have veterans or spouses of veterans who have relocated to the area. We have people with disabilities. It’s a variety of people in different phases of their career journeys, from first

jobs to starting over.”

The current unemployment rate in Lancaster County stands at 3.3%, well below Pennsylvania’s rate of 4.3%. Among the top Lancaster employers are Lancaster General Hospital, Mutual Assistance Group, the county of Lancaster and Giant Food Stores.

“One of the things we’re proud of in Lancaster is that we have one of the lowest unemployment rates in the state, and that’s consistent,” said Roggenbaum. “We’re usually below the state rate. Lancaster County is bustling. We have a lot going on here.”

The causes of unemployment are as varied as the types of employment available here.

“Some people are unemployed,” said Roggenbaum. “Companies significantly lay off, or factors cause ripple effects. It could be the field. Individuals may go from one warehouse to another. Sometimes transportation or child care are factors. Some of it is just lost jobs. Things like that

Healing Our Planet Sets Meeting

Healing Our Planet (HOP) will offer a program on Friday, May 22, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. at Community Mennonite Church of Lancaster, 328 W. Orange St., Lancaster. Blessings of Hope Plans Fundraiser

Blessings of Hope, a local nonprofit working to address food insecurity, will host the annual iCare Community Event from Thursday to Saturday, May 28 to 30, at 1850 Diamond Station Road, Ephrata. The event raises funds for the ongoing efforts of Blessings of Hope and provides a platform for supporters to learn more about what the organization does. Blessings of Hope distributes more than 35 million meals annually through partnerships with ministries and food outreach programs.

The iCare Community Event will begin with a dinner on May 28. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and an Amish wedding meal will be served at 6:30 p.m. in homage to the Amish roots of Blessings of Hope’s co-founders. Andrew Mukuba of the Philadelphia Eagles will be the keynote

silence. The parade will halt next in front of Saint Michael’s Lutheran Church.

Organization Seeks Donations, Volunteers

Community Clearinghouse Agency Inc. is starting a new program to serve senior citizens in the Lancaster area. Those age 70 or older can receive money through the program to help with pressing needs, up to a maximum of $1,000. Funds may be used for needs such as groceries, utilities, doctor visits, medication, other small bills, or various other needs. There is a one-time fee to cover the account setup.
