Jewish Family Services (JFS) of Lancaster will present a program on “Hate in Lancaster County” on Sunday, June 2, at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary of Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. The program is free and open to the public. The program will address the Lancaster community’s response to hatred directed at individuals and groups in Lancaster County. “Even after all these years, it blows my mind: Two people walk into that birth room, and three people come out,” marveled Catherine Saunders, executive co-director with Maren Ketcham of Birth Care & Family Health Services. “It’s an amazing experience to help clients make that journey to parenthood.” Birth Care celebrated its 40th year in 2018, making it the longest continually operating freestanding birth center in the United States, according to founder Rita Rhoads Reed, looking at the records of the members of the American Association of Birth Centers. In those four decades, Birth Care’s certified nursemidwives have welcomed more than 9,000 babies into the world. In 2018, Birth Care’s clients delivered 501
babies, including two sets of twins. “We’re delivering the grandchildren of our earliest moms,” Saunders remarked. Birth Care’s certified nurse-midwives have office hours in Bart and Gordonville, deliver babies at the licensed and accredited birth center in Bart, and attend births at WellSpan Ephrata Hospital. One of the hallmarks of Birth Care is its commitment to making personalized care to mothers and new babies available regardless of ability to pay. Between 75 and 80 percent of Birth Care’s clients are uninsured. “I think that’s an important thing for people to know,” Ketcham said, noting that Birth Care offers a sliding fee scale based on clients’ financial condition. Wally Calderon is overseeing the Servant Stage production of “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” with enthusiasm and energy. Not only is Calderon directing the nearly 30-member cast of teenagers, but he is the choreographer and the person who chose the 20 musical numbers that span the decades from the 1950s to the present and cover genres from rock to pop to Broadway with a special emphasis on the music of the 1980s thrown in. Perhaps, however, Calderon’s most crucial role is that of teacher. “I teach these students how to put all their gifts and talents together,” noted Calderon. “It’s a huge reward to see (students) learn to be supportive of one another … and to see each student rise to the challenge.” Servant Stage’s newest show will be performed in the Good Shepherd Chapel at Lancaster Bible College, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, May 18, and Sunday, May 19, at 3 and 7 p.m. each day. The show has also been slated to be performed during May at several area retirement communities, including Quarryville Presbyterian Retirement Community, Garden Spot Village, Luther Acres, and Calvary Fellowship Homes. More than 80 students tried
out to be part of the Servant Stage 2019 season, and Calderon believes the turnout was due to the many young people who were interested in the musical revue that he named “Jump, Jive, and Jukebox!” “It’s a revue of anything you would want to hear when you put your quarter in the jukebox,” explained Calderon. “There’s a lot of variation,” he stated, adding that “Wild Thing,” “Footloose,” and “Do You Love Me?” will be included, along with songs by New Kids on the Block and music from the Broadway hit “Hamilton.” Calderon endeavors to add depth to each number to give audiences more than song and dance. “We find little stories within each song,” he said. “It’s acting first. The song was written for a reason, so let’s try to tell a story within one song.” The intensive rehearsal process gave the cast members only a week to become familiar with the songs in the show before beginning rehearsals on March 24. “We meet each person where they are and push them a little farther in their training,” said Calderon. “The talent is incredible, and I am just thrilled at what they have been able to accomplish in such a short time.” Students who are taking part in the show are responding to the technique. “I grew up doing

Under Calderon’s direction, the students have become acutely aware of how audiences respond to them. “You have to learn how to adapt how you’re interacting to reach every audience,” explained Isabel Subacz, who serves as dance captain for the show. Brayden agreed, saying, “It’s so fun to see the audience’s faces light up when they recognize the music and sing along.” Performances are open to the public on a pay-what-you-will basis. It helps all of us stretch ourselves.” “It’s really challenging,” noted Sydney Norgaard, who wanted to take part in the show after seeing her brother, Brayden, perform in last year’s revue. “Once we’re able to (perform) the number, it is satisfying. Teamwork plays a role in that.” Mackenzie is enjoying watching that process unfold as opening night approaches. “It’s overwhelming to see all the talent coming together creating this,” she said. “Watching everyone come together as a team supporting and challenging each other makes us more independent as performers.”

National EMS Week will be observed this year from Sunday, May 19, to Saturday, May 25. The week was created to recognize the importance of emergency medical services (EMS) and to honor the first responders who provide lifesaving medical care. “EMS STRONG - National EMS Week has been declared by Gov. Tom Wolf, who encourages all citizens to recognize the value and the accomplishments of EMS providers and to thank them for their invaluable service to our communities,” said Marisa Seubert, marketing and development coordinator for Lancaster EMS. Lancaster EMS serves most of southern Lancaster County as well as some of the eastern and western parts of the county. It has a fleet of 45 vehicles operating from 11 locations. In 2018, Lancaster EMS responded to 37,831 requests for services. Seubert noted that in addition to emergency medical care, Lancaster EMS also provides non-emergency medical transport services, emergency medical technician and paramedic education, public health care and education programs, community paramedics, medical standby coverage at special events, and tactical paramedics to the Lancaster County Special Emergency Response Team. “National EMS Week is an optimal time to bring EMS providers
and the community together through awareness and outreach events,” Seubert said. “We are offering the public an opportunity to meet us and learn more about what we do for our community.” The week will kick off on May 19 with an EMS Appreciation Family Picnic Day at the Lancaster Barnstormers game. On Monday, May 20, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., the public is invited to attend open houses at the Millersville station, 100 E. Charlotte St., and the Lincoln Highway station, 1829 Lincoln Highway, Lancaster. Tours of the stations will be available, and visitors may meet staff members, learn about EMS, and observe demonstrations of hands-only CPR and Stop the Bleed. Tuesday, May 21, has been designated SAVE-A-LIFE Day. Lancaster EMS will be represented in Lancaster’s Penn Square from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mayor Danene Sorace is slated to read the National EMS Week proclamation at noon. During the event, Lancaster EMS will offer demonstrations of hands-only CPR, Stop the Bleed, and naloxone administration. Resources for opioid addiction, the safe disposal of medication, and stroke awareness will be available. A country music station will broadcast during the event, and Lancaster Barnstormers mascot Cylo will pose for pictures with attendees. Wednesday, May 22, will be

Friday, May 24, will be EMS Recognition Day at the Millersville station, where Lancaster EMS will honor all clinical and nonclinical staff members. “We will salute our EMS professionals, who go above and beyond every day to create positive change in our community with long-lasting impact,” Seubert remarked. “Our Lancaster EMS EMTs (emergency
medical technicians) and paramedics respond to emergency calls, perform lifesaving skills under stress, and provide patient care in intense situations. EMS is community care that takes time, energy, and heart. The preview will open at 8:30 a.m., with coffee, breakfast sandwiches, and doughnuts available for purchase. Reed and the members of the sale committee have collected a variety of items for the auction, and more have been pledged. “Merchants are very supportive in this community,� Saunders said. Salegoers may expect to see quilts and comforters, crafts, plants, garden items, a child’s picnic table, a rabbit hutch, a shed, lots of gift certificates, a giant glass jar partly filled with buttons, a brand-new lawn mower, hanging baskets, antiques, and more. “There will still be a lot of surprises that people will give us,� Ketcham commented. At noon, drawings for themed baskets will take place. The drawings are a popular feature of the benefit sale, and entrants must be present to win. When attendees are hungry, there will be a number of foods
to choose from, such as chicken barbecue, subs, cheesesteaks, fried shrimp, hot dogs, and burgers. Side and dessert offerings will include soup, fries, handrolled soft pretzels, soft-serve ice cream, fresh fruit, and freshly squeezed lemonade. A separate stand will sell individually priced candy. A few years ago, Birth Care added a Family Fun Day element to the benefit sale. Barrel train rides, mechanical bull rides, a bounce house, and an inflatable obstacle course will be available for youngsters to enjoy free of charge. The activities will be supervised by qualified individuals so parents will be free to participate in the auctions, Saunders said. “We’ve put a lot of emphasis on the Family Fun Day,� Ketcham said. “Yes, we want to make money, but we want to give back to the families we serve,� Saunders added. After a successful sale last year, Mary Armstrong returned as chair of this year’s book sale. She is excited to be back at the helm and leading the volunteer effort. Armstrong believes in the book sale and its ability to provide the library with critical financial support. “Watching the community come together to support the library and its services will never grow old,� she said. The book sale is recycling at its best. The community donates the books, volunteers process the donations, and book lovers flock to the sale to buy armloads of literary treasures. Open Streets Lancaster from pg 1 The Lancaster Recreation Commission in partnership with the City of Lancaster and Lancaster BIKES! will host the sixth annual Open Streets Lancaster event on Sunday, May 19. The event will take place from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on North and South Water Street connecting Culliton Park and Mayor Janice C. Stork Corridor Park. The event is free and open to people of all ages. The event will turn Water Street into a paved park to encourage physical activity and socializing, support the local economy and celebrate downtown Lancaster. Last year the event drew more than 6,000 participants with free fitness classes, gymnastics, break dancing, yoga, food trucks, musicians and local service agencies. This year, more than 150

Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facility at 340 Strasburg Pike, Lancaster, continues to be the corporate headquarters and main showroom. The next several decades saw notable expansion of the business. Water treatment products and service were added in 1985. Showrooms were opened at 5303 E. Trindle Road, Mechanicsburg, in 2004 and across from Park City at 896L Plaza Blvd., Lancaster, in 2012. Across the three stores, 72 employees currently work for L.H. Brubaker, selling and servicing an extensive
installation and courteous service specialists.” Members of the public are invited to celebrate with the Franks and the employees of L.H. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Admission and parking are free. “There are a lot of new (exhibitors) coming, and it’s almost fifty-fifty with arts and crafts,” noted Hobday. Some of the artists and crafters will be traveling from outside the central Pennsylvania region to participate in the show, but Hobday emphasized that they all feature handmade work. Showcasing original work rather than reproductions has been of the utmost importance to Hobday for the fall show as well, which has been held for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the
grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the
spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. Over the years, Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show founder and chairperson Marilyn Hobday received numerous requests from exhibitors for a spring show to be added into the calendar in addition to the traditional fall event. “Finally after enough prodding, I decided to go for it,” said Hobday with a laugh. “Our main focus for this first year is just getting a lot of quality art work,” Hobday continued. “It’s going to be a fun show. I think this will get people excited about the fall show, and I think they’re really going to complement each other.” The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Connor Nolt and Bryce Roberts added one each with Jack Ingram and Noah Davis chipping in with one assist. “This team has showed a lot of resilience,” said Nehlig. “It’s been an up and down season but this team overcame a lot of adversity. The challenge to this group this season was ‘Find A Way’. And part of that challenge was to find a way to become a winning program again and bring a family oriented culture back. I think we did that.” TRACK After dominating Lebanon in the last meet of the regular season on Monday, the track teams competed in the L-L League Championships at Hempfield last Friday and Saturday where they turned in some impressive performances. Ezra Mellinger was at the top of that list, setting a league meet record in his last long jump effort Friday night. His 23-11 leap broke a 1984 record set by
Solanco’s Tom Rath. On Saturday he won the 100 (10.86) and ran the fastest FAT time in meet history in the 200 (21.59). “It was an exciting meet,” said head coach Cal Esh. “The boys were third overall, as well as we’ve ever done, and the girls were seventh. We had some great performances, bringing home 31 medals overall.” Also on the boys’ side, the 400 relay team of Jacob Kopelman, Josiah Zehr, Mellinger and Josh Horst grabbed a silver medal with a 43.78, just off the school record. They were seeded fourth. Kopelman was coming off a Friday fourth place effort in the long jump (21-1.75) while Zehr placed fifth in the 300 hurdles (40.04), seventh in the 110 highs (16.31) and fifth in the pole vault (12-6). Also earning a silver medal was senior Gabe Frederick with a 52-11.25 in the shot put. Jacob Long added a fifth in the discus with a 132-11 and Alex Stoeffler was eighth in the javelin (155-6). Back on the track, the 3200 relay team of Arik Harnish, Grant Kuhn, Luka Vranich and Jansen Miller settled for fourth place with an 8:20.62. The girls’ also grabbed a couple of
gold medals with Kristin Herr tossing the javelin 134-1 and Lily Hoke, a fourth seed, clearing 5-2 in the high jump. Herr was also second in the discus with a 119-8. On the track, Colleen Gilbert, seeded 13th, finished in fifth place in the 3200 with an 11:47.7 while Lauren Gard placed sixth in the 300 hurdles with a personal best 47.30. Gard also teamed with Lindsay Szymanski, Toby Harnish, and Elli Strauss for a sixth place medal in the 400 relay (50.58) while Gilbert and Harnish joined with Sara Boyd and Elizabeth Deardorff to clock a sixth place effort in the 3200 relay (10:11.67). Micah Gordley chipped in with an eighth place effort in the mile run at 5:28.58. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Last Tuesday at Conestoga Valley High School, in the opening round of the L-L League playoffs, the girls’ lacrosse team faced the undefeated Streaks of Manheim Township for the second time in two weeks and for the second time fell short. Though the 14-4 final sounds a bit lopsided, the Pioneers, making their second L-L playoff appearance in three years, were tough in the first half, down a slim 5-4.

High School, the Pioneers used a 15-hit attack to upend Northern Lebanon (15-3, 17-4), the second place team in Section Three, in the quarterfinals of the L-L League playoffs. The still undefeated Pioneers scored once in the first inning but fell behind 2-1 in the top of the second as the Cedars collected four of their eight hits. L-S took the lead for good with four runs in the bottom half and tacked on single runs in three of the next four innings to pick up an 8-2 win over the No. 2 seed in 4A districts. Daisy Frank doubled, reached third on a poor cutoff by N. Lebanon and scored on Emily Platt’s blooper that was dropped. Julz Garber followed with a RBI triple, Summer Peters added a run scoring double and Chloe Blantz singled in the final run. After a scoreless third, Gabby Drum singled in one fourth inning run, Peters added a two out, run scoring single in
the fifth, and Platt’s screaming double in the sixth pushed in Cam Byler who reached with a base hit. “Of those 15 hits, we had a triple and three doubles,” noted head coach Gene Charles. “But we played excellent defense too. Taryn Hostetter made two diving catches at third base, Jocelyn Branco, in right field, caught a runner off first base, and Chloe Blantz turned an unassisted double play in the sixth inning.” Peters went 4-4 with a double and 2 RBIs. Garber was 3-3 with a triple, three runs scored and one RBI. Blantz was 2-3, Drumm was 3-4 with one RBI and Platt added 2 RBIs. “I thought Brynn (Baker), with four strikeouts and no walks, threw well,” he added. The Pioneers were coming off an impressive 11-5 come-from-behind win over Northeastern (14-4), the No. 8 seed in 5A, last Monday. Despite jumping out to a 1-0 lead in the first, L-S gave up two runs in the third and three runs in the fifth to fall behind 5-1. The Pioneers finally solved Northeastern pitcher Bortner in the sixth inning when they rallied for six runs and took the lead. They tacked on four runs in the seventh to win convincingly. L-S recorded 13 hits in the game and eight came in the last two innings. The No. 5 through 9 hitters each recorded one RBI. “Their pitcher threw probably 60%
changeups,” noted Charles, “and her fastball was not overpowering. It just took us a while to catch on.” Garber and Frank both went 2-4, Drumm was 3-4 and Byler was 2-3 with two RBIs. BASEBALL In the last L-L League playoff action taking place last Saturday, the baseball team, in a steady drizzle, worked a 6-0 shutout over Donegal to advance to this week’s semifinals opposite Warwick. The defense saw little action in this one as Dylan Byler pitched a two-hitter, striking out 12 without giving up a single walk. L-S scored the only run they really needed in the bottom of the first. Thomas Shockey and Braedon Karpathios opened with back-to-back base hits and Shockey eventually scored on a fielder’s choice. The Pioneers picked up three runs in the second highlighted by a Patrick Holmes two-run homer. After three scoreless innings, L-S scored twice in the sixth with Taso Kovak’s two run double. Donegal won five of its last six games to qualify for the playoffs. L-S opened the week with a 9-0 shutout over Hershey on Monday and picked up a 9-5 win at Twin Valley one day later. The Pioneers scored in five of the seven innings against Hershey and Byler and Doug Schneider combined to pitch a three-hitter, striking out nine batters against a single walk.

A three-run third pushed the lead to 6-0. A bases loaded walk to Kovac plated the first run that inning while Joseph Meck’s single pushed in two more. Aaron Snyder and Meck each went 3-4. “It was a tale of two halves again,” said head coach Claudia Ovchinnikoff. “We played a great first half, winning the draws, passing the ball effectively in transition and being patient with the ball on our offensive end.” Leading scorer Kelsey Kimmel scored three of Lampeter’s four first half goals in what Ovchinnikoff called an outstanding game. “I thought we played great team defense as well,” said Ovchinnikoff. “We were constantly communicating. Marissa Denlinger, Brittney Zameroski and Paige Weidman played very well and Mary Peticca had yet another outstanding game in goal. That may have been the best she has played all season.” Unfortunately that momentum did not carry over to the second half where the Streaks responded with nine goals. “We did not win as many draws in the second half and draws are critical in the game of women’s lacrosse,” noted Ovchinnikoff. “We also made several unforced errors that cost us some goals. Overall I was very proud of the girls for playing hard the entire game and not giving up. They left everything on the field.” The girls will regroup for this week’s opening round of districts where, as the fourth seed, they play the winner of the Wyomissing vs. Berks Catholic game at home on Wednesday. It will be the Pioneers’ fourth straight district appearance. The Pioneers were also well represented in the recent League All-Star selections. Kimmel was both a first team all-star and MVP as a midfielder. Peticca and Zameroski were also first team selections. McKenna Conklin, a junior, was a second team midfielder and Marissa Denlinger was a second team defender. Honorable mention selections went to Katelyn Smith, on attack, and Paige Weidman, as a defender. “Each and every one of these girls have worked very hard this year and deserve the all-star honor,” said Ovchinnikoff. His works span many genres, including concertos, symphonies, ballets and music for film, which can still be regularly heard today. The “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite” was written in 1941 for a play with the same name created by Russian poet and playwright Mikhail Lermontov. Despite the play having a tragic theme, the waltz is particularly spirited. Peck was a composer from Detroit, Mich., who was heavily influenced by the soul music being played in the city in the 1950s. A musician from a very early age, Peck graduated from the University of Michigan with a doctorate in composition in 1972. He went on to be a professor at prestigious universities, including The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich the Eastman School of Music. In Triumphant,” the final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, his later years, he left teaching to pursue his passion - advocating May 18, at the Winter Center in Millersville. The Lancaster Symphony Orchestra will present “Shostakovich Triumphant,” the group’s sixth and final concert of its 72nd season, on Saturday, May 18, at the Winter Center at Millersville University at 3 and 8 p.m. The Winter Center is located at 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The concert will include the Aram Khachaturian’s “Waltz” from the “Masquerade Suite,” Russell Peck’s “The Glory and the Grandeur” and Dimitri
Shostakovich’s Fifth Symphony. Khachaturian is considered one of the leading Soviet composers and the most well-known Armenian composer of the 20th century. He was born in 1903 to poor Armenian parents in present-day Georgia and grew up with little formal music training until age 18 when he enrolled in the Gnessin Musical Institute. He studied cello, composition and biology, and he was awarded many prestigious awards and privileges
for an end to world hunger. “The Glory and the Grandeur” is one of his most well-known pieces and is a work of Americana. The percussion section is in the spotlight, as a trio of percussion soloists plays 110 individual percussion instruments. Shostakovich was 19 when he began composing music. His career spanned a timeframe similar to the reign of Stalin, and artists of this era were severely punished, even executed, if their craft was perceived as going against the views and parameters set forth by the Communist Party. Shostakovich’s opera “Lady Macbeth of the Mtsensk District” received public criticism from Stalin, causing Shostakovich to fear his career, and even his life, would end. Shostakovich pressed

to receive an award. The organization was started in 1970, and in preparation for its next 50 years, the board of directors began developing a strategic plan and a direction for the future. Kevin St. Cyr mentored executive director Patrick Kerwin, who is LVECF’s only full-time employee, and he helped the board of directors develop mission and vision statements. “Thanks to SCORE and our strategic plan, we feel well-prepared to enter the next half-century,” Kerwin said. Millersville University (MU) president Daniel Wubah presented an award to Kurt Moon, who created STR Resources & Associates. “One of the reasons Lancaster is a special place is because of the interconnectedness,” Wubah said, demonstrating this by giving a shout-out to Foxduck co-founder Rebecca Wood, who is studying business at MU. Wubah also announced that MU has a new initiative in process, that of developing a mentorship office reminiscent of SCORE’s work, but for students. Moon shared that SCORE mentor Hugh McMaster helped him with the practical aspects of establishing and growing a

St. John’s Episcopal Church, 321 W.
