Willow Street United Church of Christ (WSUCC) will continue its tradition of hosting a Family Fun Fair before Mother’s Day. This year’s festivities will take place on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the church, 2 7 2 3 W i l l o w Street Pike North, Willow Street. The event will be held rain or shine, everyone is welcome to attend, and everything will be free of charge. An array of activities for children will be offered, including a bounce house, face painting, arts and crafts, cupcake decorating, games with prizes, and more. Family photos will be available, flowers will be given to women, and each household may take home an American flag. Drawings for prizes donated by local restaurants and retailers will be held during the event as well. See Family Fun Fair pg 4

205 E. Lemon St., Lancaster, will conduct cleanup and beautification efforts on Monday, May 13, through Wednesday, May 15. Volunteers are needed to assist with a variety of cleanup tasks, including grave marker repairs. Under the direction of conservator Robert Mosko, participants will be introduced to the baseline knowledge, theory, techniques, and materials that underpin gravestone preservation. The threeday collaboration will also include hands-on training in cleaning headstones, repair practices, and resetting fallen monuments. People of all skill levels are welcome to attend. The hands-on workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. The event is free, and participants may register for one, two, or all three workshop days. Rotary Club Donates To Capital Campaigns

“A Touch Of Country” from pg 1 saw how much Max resembled Tim McGraw and that he actually performed as a tribute artist, it gave me an idea for something different that would appeal to the local community,” Fanelli said. That thought eventually led to “A Touch of Country,” a dinner and concert event to be held at the Hoffman Building, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, on Saturday, May 11. “I wanted to help out and be a part of (WAGC’s) mission,” Armstrong remarked. Founded in 2005, WAGC offers short-term mission trips to those seeking to serve others. Volunteers have traveled to Appalachia and Native American reservations, as well as Kenya, Zambia, Haiti, and El Salvador. WAGC partners with individuals and organizations that are already working in their own communities to improve the lives of those living in poverty. WAGC’s purpose is to come alongside them and support them in these efforts to bring hope to the hurting with dignity and respect. WAGC aims to give a “hand up,” not a “hand out.” While one goal is to help those

who are unable to help themselves due to economic, educational, or medical hardships, a second, equally important goal is to offer volunteers opportunities to grow their faith and share their blessings with others. The doors of the Hoffman Building will open for “A Touch of Country” at 5:15 p.m., and dinner will begin at 6 p.m. Guests will be treated to pulled pork barbecue, boneless smoked chicken, potato salad, pasta salad, baked beans, and macaroni and cheese. Locally made pies and ice cream will be served for dessert. Dinner will be followed by a short presentation on WAGC’s ministry. At 7:30 p.m., Armstrong will take the stage to perform the music of Tim McGraw. The full concert will feature such tunes as “Don’t Take the Girl,” “I Like It, I Love It,” “If You’re Reading This,” “Down on the Farm,” “It’s Your Love,” and others. Guests are encouraged to wear their dancing boots. Photos with Armstrong will be available for a donation, and compact disc recordings will be offered for sale. Tickets are required for admis-

Rotary Club of Lancaster South presented checks in the amount of $5,000 each to the West Lampeter Township Community Foundation’s We’re Taking the Field Capital Campaign to improve Village Park in West Lampeter Township and to the Southern End Community Association’s (SECA) Jump Into Local Recreation Capital Campaign to improve and renovate the outdoor swimming pool in Quarryville. Village Park is used by hundreds of children and families on any given night for sports and recreation activities. The current fields were not designed or graded for organized sports, and so several of the teams are unable to hold home games due to inadequate field conditions. The total project budget is $2.5 million, with a DCNR grant of $250,000 and a matching grant of $250,000 from West Lampeter Township already having been secured. Also, George and Pat Desmond have issued a $250,000 leadership challenge grant, which will be matched dollar for dollar in the early stages of the campaign. After 25 years of operation, the SECA pool has reached the end of its life. Each summer the pool is used by hundreds of children, families, and adults from the Solanco School District and beyond for water safety, competitive swimming, recreation, and family fun. Anyone can use the pool on a daily basis without having to pay an initiation fee or membership dues. The pool annually employs about 27 teenagers and young adults as swim instructors, lifeguards, and front desk personnel. The total project budget is $650,000, and $428,000 has been raised so far by volunteers, area businesses, individuals, and service organizations.

Prayer Rally from pg 1 The Strasburg Ministerium will hold a National Day of Prayer event on Thursday, May 2, at noon around the flag pole in front of the Strasburg Borough Municipal Building, 145 Precision Ave. According to the National Day of Prayer website, the annual observance is held on the first Thursday of May, inviting people of all faiths to pray for the nation. Pastors from many of the areaâ€™s churches will be present in support of community leaders.

Additionally, there will be officials and representatives on hand from Strasburg Borough, Strasburg Police, Strasburg Fire Department, an EMS service, the military, the medical field and area businesses. tude to local businesses that have helped to offset the costs of the event. “We’re a small church, and we operate with a limited budget, but I call us ‘the little church that could,’” Deb remarked. “Area merchants have been very generous in providing door prizes, as well as discounted - or in some cases, gratis - items, and we have some new donors participating this year also.” The goal of the committee and congregation’s efforts is to live up to the motto of “Love lives here,” which was coined by the late Tom Whary, who was the chair of the Family Fun Fair for approximately 10 years prior to his death in July 2017. The committee has strived to pay tribute to Whary and honor his memory by building upon the foundation of community outreach he established, Deb said. “We believe in extravagant welcome and extending hospitality as a sign of God’s inclusive love,” she added. “It’s our mission to love one another and to extend that love beyond our church walls; for us, Family Fun Fair truly is a labor of love.” For more information about the Family Fun Fair, readers may call the church at 717-464-3462.

Deb noted that also based on requests at last year’s event, tours of the historic church will be available this year upon request. The Gilgores have worked with a committee of church members to plan the Family Fun Fair, and they are energized by the number of people who have expressed a desire to help with the event. “The Lord continues to bless our efforts, far beyond our expectations,” Deb said. “We’ve had such an outpouring of support for this event, with approximately 50 percent of our regularly attending members helping out, including some new volunteers joining us for 2019. Whether age 9 or 90, if someone is willing to help with the Fun Fair, we find something they are

The 30th annual Mother’s Day Truck Convoy will take place on Sunday, May 12, at Burle Business Park, 1000 New Holland Ave., Lancaster. The Convoy Carnival will take place on the Burle Business Park property from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., and the trucks will leave promptly at 1:30 p.m. The Convoy will end at about 4:30 p.m. This year’s goal is to raise $550,000 for Make-A-Wish. Organizers expect to host approximately 600 drivers with trucks and trailers at the Truck Convoy, as well as an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 community members at the Convoy Carnival. The Convoy itself is a 26-mile scenic route through Amish Country, where 25,000 members of the community line the route to cheer on the drivers and the 125 Wish recipients who ride with them. This year, the final vehicle will be the Wish Family Bus, transporting family members of Wish recipients who are deceased. The first truck will tow the Wish Angel Trailer, which features stars emblazoned with names of Wish children

who are deceased. A Working Truck Beauty Contest is being held online, and the winners of each of the four categories will be featured at the Convoy. The Convoy Carnival, open to children and adults of all ages, will feature a wide array of local food, games, dozens of costumed characters, live music and a live auction. An on-stage presentation will take place at noon. Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for

JASCPA Posts STEM Corporate Challenge Junior Achievement of South Central Pennsylvania (JASCPA) will hold its first STEM Corporate Challenge in three locations in May. The events will take place on Tuesday, May 7, at Capital City Airport, 112 Airport Road, New Cumberland; on Thursday, May 16, at Listrak Corporate Offices, 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz; and on Wednesday, May 22, in Memorial Hall at York Fairgrounds, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The fundraising event will aim to bring Junior Achievement’s STEM Summit high school program, which recently ran for the 200th time since its inception in 2013, to the business volunteers who traditionally serve as mentors during the daylong STEM career exploration event. The STEM Corporate Challenge will allow teams of five business colleagues to

compete in the following timed challenges: electrical, relay, math, civil engineering, and robotics. Prizes will be awarded to the overall top scoring team, top fundraising team, and top individual fundraiser. Funds raised will benefit Junior Achievement programs for kindergarten through 12th-grade students in schools throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. Event registration will begin at 5:30 p.m., and light refreshments will be served until 6 p.m. The competition will begin promptly at 6 p.m. and will run until 8 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow. The quintet is composed of Sonia De Los Santos, guitar, jarana, and vocals; Martín Vejarano, drums and clarinet; Sinuhé Padilla-Isunza, Leona and vocals; Eddie Venegas, violin, trombone, and vocals; and Ric Becker, trombone, melodica, and vocals. De Los Santos was born in Monterrey, Mexico. In 2007, she started touring the world, singing in English and Spanish, playing the guitar and jarana, and collaborating with Grammy Award-winning group Dan Zanes and Friends. In 2015, she released her first solo family music album, “Mi Viaje: De Nuevo León to the New York Island,” which won a Parents’ Choice Foundation Gold Award. The collection reflects her experiences growing up in Mexico, moving to another country, learning about other cultures,

and, in the process, feeling closer to her own heritage. The collection includes original songs and adaptations of American folk classics. De Los Santos tours regularly across the United States, performing with her band in renowned venues and festivals such as Lincoln Center, Carnegie Hall, and Austin City Limits. She is currently promoting the release of her second family album, “¡Alegría!” She is also celebrating the debut of her new live show, “Fiesta con Sonia De Los Santos,” at the New Victory Theater in New York City. Kimmel Scores Five Against Manheim Township by Mona Steinhauer

The girls’ lacrosse team faced two opponents on opposite ends of the standings last week. They hosted league undefeated Manheim Township on Tuesday and traveled to Ephrata, winless in league play, Thursday. The results were an 18-10 loss to the Streaks and a dominating

21-7 win over the Mounts. “We were definitely the underdogs against Township,” said head coach Claudia Ovchinnikoff, “but I truly believe we have the talent necessary to compete and win against teams like them.” The Pioneers opened the scoring with a goal by Kelsey Kimmel (5g, 1a) and found themselves tied at 3-3 with

The Streaks, however, took control, running off six straight goals and settling for a 10-5 first half lead. “We made some unforced errors at certain points of the game that allowed Township to capitalize and score quick goals,” noted Ovchinnikoff. “You cannot have letdowns against a team like that. We did a nice job on draw controls (15) throughout the game but we couldn’t control it when we really needed to,” she added. “We were also getting beat to the 50-50 ground balls. Overall though, I was happy that we fought hard and didn’t give up until the final whistle.” Both teams traded early goals to start the second half but Township used another six straight goals to extend their advantage. Backing Kimmel was Riley Dawson (2g), Katelyn Smith (1g, 2a), McKenna Conklin (1g) and Emma Gochnauer (1g, 1a). “Kelsey again led the team in scoring but we also had strong performance from Jeslyn Krebs and McKenna Conklin,” the coach pointed out. “Mary Peticca (15 saves) did a good job between the pipes. We will continue working hard to get better.” In Thursday’s outing against the Mounts, Conklin poured in a game-high five goals and added one

assist as L-S jumped out to a 12-4 first half lead. Hannah Gawne added four goals, Dawson chipped in with a hat trick and Smith (2a), Kelliann Drummond (1a) and Gochnauer finished with two goals each. Krebs and Isabella Beiler contributed two assists a piece. BASEBALL Since a 5-3 loss on April 10, the Pioneer baseball team has strung together five straight wins and leads the Section Two standings with an 11-1 record (12-1 overall). In crossover action last week, L-S upended Manheim Township 7-3 on Monday before returning to Section Two play and topping winless Lebanon 8-2 Wednesday. The Pioneers used eight hits and took advantage of three errors to score in four of the seven innings. Their defense kept the Streaks scoreless through the first six frames before giving up three in the bottom of the seventh. Derek Eckman was the big hitter of the day, going 3-3 with three runs scored. Taso Kovac was tops in RBI’s with three and Nevin Book added two. On the hill, Aaron Snyder struck out seven, walked two and gave up just two hits in six innings of work. Brandon Miller gave up three earned runs in his one inning pitched. In a game that featured a

combined seven errors, Lebanon scored one in the top of the first. L-S, however, took over with a six run third inning. Thomas Shockey’s single to left plated Kovac, who walked, and Joe Meck, who singled to right. Braedon Karpathios followed with a two run double to center, pushing the lead to 3-1. Hunter Cunningham’s one out base hit plated another run and

In non-league action Monday, L-S nipped Octorara 3-2 and one day later they earned a solid 5-2 victory over Garden Spot. The Pioneers split doubles points with Octorara. Rowen Krantz and Logan Emmert put L-S on the board with a 6-1, 7-5 win at No. 2 and the hosts went on to win two of the three singles matches. Alex Baker collected a 6-1, 6-3 win at No. 1 and Alexandros Vaziri pulled out a 6-4, 7-5 win at No. 3. Tuesday the Pioneers picked up a road win over Garden Spot. The Spartans jumped in front with a No. 1 doubles win but L-S took the next two. Braeden Weaver and Emmert prevailed for an 8-6 win and Alex Braun and Luke Kelly won 8-4 at No. 3. The visitors dominated singles play, winning three of four matches, all in straight sets. Baker and Weaver both won 6-2, 6-2 and Braun, playing No. 3, was a 7-5, 6-0 winner. The Pioneers were also represented

in the L-L League Flight Tournament which got underway last Thursday. Competing in Flight 3 doubles, Braun and Kelly advanced to this week’s finals with two strong showings. They defeated 8-6 CV’s High/Taylor 8-6 in the opening round and got past Lancaster Catholic’s Myers/Carl 8-5 in round two. They will face Ephrata’s Zucchi and Martin who knocked off No. 2 seed Westfield and Stoltzfus 8-2 in round two. TRACK With a dominating 103-47 win over Elizabethtown last Tuesday, the boys’ track team improved to 4-1 in Section Two and sit tied for second place with Cocalico, behind undefeated Ephrata. L-S won 12 of 18 events and earned sweeps in three events to pull away. Ezra Mellinger finished with three wins on the day, earning top times in the 100 (10.8), 200 (22.8) and long jump (22-8) and the Pioneers swept the 800 with Jansen Miller (2:00.5), Arik Harnish (2:08.6) and Luka Vranich, who raced from behind to finish third with a 2:11.1. “The throwers dominated again,” said head coach Cal Esh, “taking all but four points and getting an impressive 53-9 heave from Gabe Frederick.” The Pioneers also came away with two sweeps in the field with

Josiah Zehr (12-0), Caleb Bruner (11-6), and Brayden Emmerling (9-0) dominating the pole vault and Frederick (53-9), Alex Stoeffler (44-2) and Johnny Franklin (41-7.5) commanding the shot put. Stoeffler went on to win the javelin (171-1) with Franklin taking third (145-8) and Frederick added a second in the discus (127-8) behind Jacob Long’s winning 132-6.5 toss. Also in the field, Emmerling cleared 5-8 to win the high jump and Jacob Kopelman, who was second in the 100 (11.7), won the triple jump (40-3). The girls’ team also got a strong showing from their throwers and came away with a convincing 93-57 result. They sit tied with Manheim Central at 4-1 in Section Two. “The girls’ gave up one first, one second and one third over the three throws and Kristen Herr came away with two wins,” noted Esh. Herr was tops in the discus (119-7), with Bella Howells taking second (104-7), and won the javelin (127-4) with Ashlee Conrad taking third (92-11). In the shot put it was

Also in the field, Cameron Coleman (8-6) and Addison Nickel (7-6) went 1-2 in the pole vault and Elli Strauss earned a win in the long jump (15-10). Nickel was also second in the triple jump (29-11) with Lilly Hoke, who was second in the high jump, getting third (29-8.5). Leading the way on the track, Kathryn Sigafoos, (1:05.4), Hannah Schultheis (1:07.4) and Tara Wehibe (1:08.4) swept the open 400. Lindsay Szymanski (13.0) and Strauss (13.0) went 1-2 in the 100 and Strauss went on to win the 200 (27.0). L-S also got a win from Madison Whitaker in the 110 hurdles (16.6). Also placing in two events was Lauren Gard - 3rd in the 110 hurdles and second in the 300’s, and Colleen Gilbert - second in the 800 and 3rd in the 3200. BOYS’ LACROSSE With a pair of night games last week, the Pioneer boys finished with mixed results in lacrosse action. They dropped a hard-fought 11-7 result

against second place LCD/LCHS Tuesday and came back with a strong 11-5 non-league win over Norther York Wednesday. The Pioneers are 5-4 in Section Two behind LCD/LCHS (6-2) and Ephrata (8-1). Tied at 1-1 in the first quarter, LCD/LCHS used a two-goal advantage in the second quarter to gain some breathing room at the break, 5-3. They outscored the Pioneers 3-2 in the third frame and 3-2 in the fourth to pull away. Noah Patters notched a hat trick with one assist and Connor Nolt added two goals and one assist to lead the way. Finn McKinney (1g), Noah Davis (1g, 1a) and Stewart McClain (2a) also contributed. Dom Reed saved 11 of the 22 shots he faced in goal. Holding a 5-4 halftime lead over Northern York, L-S used a strong second half, including a 3-0 third quarter advantage, to pull away. Nolt was the top scorer in this one with four goals. Joey Jordan (2g, 1a), Noah Davis (2g), Patterson (1g, 2a), McClain (1g, 2a) and Cam D’Imperio, with his first goal of the season, also found the back of the cage. Logan Bradley and Michael Delgrande contributed with assists. SOFTBALL The softball team kept its unbeaten streak intact with wins over Manheim Township and Lebanon last week. They remain on top of the Section Two standings at 12-0 (14-0 overall). Monday the Pioneers held a slim 10-9 edge in hits but topped the

Streaks 8-3. “This was a good test for us,” said head coach Gene Charles. “Their pitcher does a nice job. “Gabby Drumm broke a 2-2 tie in the bottom of the third and Brynn Baker collected her fourth homer of the year,” he pointed out. “And Jocelyn Branco added a two run double.” Holding a 4-2 lead after three complete innings, L-S padded its advantage with three in the fifth and one in the sixth. Baker backed her bat from the circle, matching a season-high nine strikeouts against one walk. “We ended the game with another double play,” Charles recalled. “I think that’s the third time this year we’ve ended the game with a double play.” Wednesday’s outing in Lebanon was shorter than the bus trip. Drumm pitched a three inning perfect game and L-S clinched at least a tie for the Section Two crown with a 15-0 shutout that took just one hour. “It was nine up, nine down,” stated Charles. “Gabby struck out four and crushed a three-run homer in the second. She was 3-3 with five of our 15 RBI’s. Cam Byler was also 3-3. “Everyone contributed,” Charles added. “They had seven walks in three innings and we took care of business.”

La Academia Partnership Charter School honored seven students as its Students of the Month for March. These students were selected out of 208 students for their school and community activities, leadership, academic accomplishments, attendance, all-around good service and teacher recommendations. The honored students are Camila Urena, sixth grade; Divenit Cruz, seventh grade; Marco Torres, eighth grade; Yuliana Negron Bermudez, ninth grade; Onix Guadalupe Rivera, 10th grade; Aaliyah Martinez, 11th grade; and Jordan Moore, 12th grade. Camila’s favorite subject is math. She chose to attend La Academia because her brother is also a student at the school. Divenit, whose favorite class is social studies, plans to attend college, with the goal of becoming a doctor. She chose to attend La Academia because she believes the school will help her. Marco’s favorite subject is math, and he plans to attend college. His decision to attend La Academia stems from his

sister’s attendance at the school and the small size of the school. Yuliana wants to become a teacher. Onix says she enjoys art class, and she hopes to work as a game designer, character designer or cartoonist. Onix came to La Academia because of the small class sizes. Aaliyah says she enjoys Advanced Placement (AP) History, and she wants to attend college to study the arts. She likes La Academia’s small size and plans to spend her time at the school learning and preparing for her future. Jordan, whose favorite class is Esports, wants to become a graphic designer. Participating churches and business are also holding a diaper drive for crisis pregnancy centers and a shoe drive that will help to fund local projects. Go Beyond is a countywide initiative of local churches with a mission of uniting people to serve year-round. Each year, a week is designated as a coordinated time of service, although the vision of the organizers is to ignite a culture of service in area churches and communities. This year’s kickoff will take place during the National Day of Prayer celebration at Lititz Springs Park, 24 N. Broad St., Lititz, on May 2, and the week will conclude on May 11 with Community Cleanups in Quarryville, Lancaster, and Myerstown.
