Welchans started a modern band class at L-S last year. “(Modern band is) an up-and-coming thing across the state and across the nation,” he said. “The talent and competition keep getting better. We are reaching kids that we don’t normally see in the music wing, so it’s really neat.” Students will be divided into five bands, which each group having either six or seven members. Ellie, a senior vocalist, and Elliott, a freshman keyboardist, are in a band that will perform “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan, “Silver Springs” by Fleetwood Mac, “Limelight” by Rush, and “Sweet Child O’ Mine” by Guns N’ Roses. “Everyone makes good connections with each other,” Ellie

Families will dig Fossil Safari BY GEORGE DEIBEL

Families can channel their inner archaeologist at a Fossil Safari sponsored by the Lancaster County Fossil and Mineral Club (LCFMC). The educational event will be held Saturday, April 5, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Trinity Reformed United Church of Christ, 450 W. Main St., Mountville. There is no fee for admission. Preregistration is required. Children must be accompanied by an adult. For more

ampeter-Strasburg (L -S) Hig h School musicians Elliott Holmes, Mia LaFontaine, Clara Mecouch, Ellie Rhinier, Leiana Smathers, and Carson Zook have earned the chance to perform in their home venue alongside students from across the district. T h e Pe n n s y l v a n i a M u s i c Educators Association (PMEA) District 7 Modern Band Festival will be held Friday, April 4, and Saturday, April 5, in the Lampeter -Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1640 Book Road, Lancaster. Students will spend that Friday rehearsing, and the event will culminate with a public concert the following day at 3 p.m. Tickets

Ian Lyons is an unflinching guy who isn’t easily excited. Those are two great traits to possess when you are competing against the best shooters around. “You have to be really calm because if you’re excited, your heartbeat goes up,” said Ian. “You get unsteady and don’t shoot as well. You have to be very calm and collected. It comes into play at every aspect. For me, I’m just a very calm person, so that helps.” Ian, a senior at L ampeter- S trasburg Hig h School, earned gold, silver, and bronze medals at the PA Interscholastic High School 3-P Smallbore and Precision Air Rifle Championship, held Feb. 14 to 16 at Everett Sportsmen’s Club.
