Historic Rock Ford, 881 Rockford Road, Lancaster, will open on Wednesday, April 1, for its 2026 season, with a focus on celebrating America’s semiquincentennial.
This year’s new exhibit in the Snyder Gallery, “Lancaster’s Revolutionaries,” will focus on the many individuals from Lancaster who made significant contributions to the patriot cause. Their motivation reflected a deep commitment to the ideals set forth in the Declaration of Independence. Two guest curators will contribute signature sections to the exhibit: Leroy Hopkins Jr. on the Black community in Lancaster at the time of the Revolution and Jess McPherson on the Indigenous community of Lancaster in the 18th century. Some of the loans featured in the exhibit include the
doorway to George Ross’ Lancaster home, courtesy of LancasterHistory; Benjamin West’s portrait of Ann Wood Henry, courtesy of the Atwater Kent Collection at Drexel; and a 1780 letter Edward Hand wrote to his wife reacting to Benedict Arnold’s treason, courtesy of The Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The exhibit will run until Saturday, Oct. 31.
In addition to the new exhibit, Historic Rock Ford will host more than 60 events to celebrate America250, including lectures, theater, living history, and concerts. The season’s three programming series are America250, Historic Fashion, and Untold Stories of the Revolution. The America250 event series will highlight the culture and society of Colonial America and the early republic, the political events that made the revolution possible,

BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Dave Lewis hails from Hazleton, which is in the heart of coal country.
Both of his grandfathers worked in the coal industry.
He noted that it’s natural that he became fascinated by trains.
“Where you have coal, you have trains,” Lewis said. “It didn’t take much for me to want to watch trains.”
Decades later, he moved to Willow Street following retirement, and four years ago, he began volunteering at the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in Strasburg. Now he’s being feted for his community service.
Lewis will be honored as the museum’s Volunteer of the Year by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission

Imagine a world where everything’s Bella all the time.
Bella Durham does.
The Lancaster Mennonite kindergartner recently released her third book, “Bella’s Big Personality Activities Book,” on March 7, her 6th birthday. The book includes mazes, tracing, crossword puzzles, connect the dots, and scavenger hunts. All three publications are available on Amazon.
Bella published her debut work, “Bella’s Big Personality,” on her 5th birthday. “The book is about my big personality when I make a friend feel better,” the bubbly Manheim Township resident said. “We go to the beach, and then at the end we go to a park.”
She got some assistance from her mother. “We wrote the book together,”
Marty Durham said. “Bella told me the friend she wanted in it, how she wanted to cheer him up. It’s a very popular story. She illustrated what it was that she wanted. I think that’s so important in the world and society we live in today, where kids are into electronics. They’re into what they’re seeing on social media.”
Marty continued, “Her children’s book is something really positive about just how to have a fun day with clean fun and enjoy your friends and nature. It has a really strong message about her cheering up her friends and just enjoying being outside.”
A few months later
“Bella’s Big Personality Coloring Book.” “People can color me in the pond with the ducks, me in the pond with the frogs, and they can color my house,” said Bella, who also loves math and swingsets. “They can color me and my mom (Marty). They can color me singing, playing at the park.”
“Bella loves to color, so I asked if we could create a coloring book that goes along with the personalities,” said Marty. That led to the activity book.
“In school, she’s tracing letters, she’s learning shapes, so the book is also educational,” Marty stated. “It could be for age 3 on up. Teenagers, adults, everyone can just enjoy the activities book as well as the coloring book.”
Writing comes naturally for Bella. “She has such a creative gene inside of her,” Marty said. “She came home one day and said, ‘Look at this book.’ They check out library books at Lancaster Mennonite at her age, two books every week, and then they have to return them. So she’s been reading books constantly when she was 4 (years old) to going into 5. As she was reading them, she said to me one day, I should have a book.’”
Bella’s innate qualities are evident in her books.
“Everyone talks about her outgoing personality, how she’s sweet, she’s loving, she loves God,” Marty said. “She has this very business entrepreneurial mindset.”
Bella is not content with simply writing, and she

is already making plans to expand her brand. “I want to have a Bella car, a Bella teddy bear, a Bella dollhouse, a Bella app,” she said. “I want everything in this whole entire world to be full of Bellas.”

director of Aaron’s Acres for 28 years. “(Borough officials) allow us to use the pavilion, the pool, the park. It’s a wonderful partnership. We have community members coming up to us and saying, ‘It’s great to see you again.’ You’re breaking down barriers and you’re connecting to make a stronger community.”
New Holland Community Park, 400 E. Jackson St., New Holland, will again provide the setting for Aaron’s Acres’ annual summer camp, the program that resulted in the founding of the organization dedicated to serving individuals with disabilities and their families. This summer will mark the fourth year that the park has hosted Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp.
does something they never did before. There’s this positivity. It’s a magical place because the staff is engaged with the kids and the kids are engaged with us.”
Among the activities and opportunities that campers and staff members can enjoy are daily swimming, music therapy, arts and crafts, a petting zoo, a magician, a ventriloquist, nature activities and special theme days. The only activity not conducted at the park is the camp’s field trip to Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center.

The summer camp program consists of three twoweek sessions, from Monday, June 15, through Friday, June 26; from Monday, July 6, through Friday, July 17; and from Monday, July 20, through Friday, July 31. The sessions offer full-day and half-day options.
Interested individuals can register at www.aaronsacres .org by Tuesday, March 31.
“The atmosphere is so positive,” said Paskoff. “We celebrate everything kids do - the kid who goes into the water, the kid who goes on the horse, the kid who
“I think the best part is seeing the staff and camper interactions,” said Paskoff. “I love seeing the smiles and joy. So many parents say they don’t see those smiles all the time. The last day of camp, the counselors and campers are crying, and it’s so powerful.”
Aaron’s Acres summer camp is designed for individuals between ages 5 and 21 with cognitive, behavior and medical disabilities. The camp mostly serves individuals from across Lancaster County, but also from Dauphin, Berks, Lebanon, Perry and Cumberland counties.
“They’re kids who are hoping to have fun and looking to do something over the summer,” said Paskoff. “Some may not have been

accepted by other programs. You have kids who want to be like everybody else, and at Aaron’s Acres, they can be like everybody else.”
“They’re developing their communication and social skills,” Paskoff continued.
“During the school year, they’re making strides in these areas, and we’re helping them to not regress. They’re learning transition, and they’re having new experiences. There are so many advantages to summer camp.”
About 120 individuals
are expected to attend the summer camps. Because Aaron’s Acres maintains 1-to-1 or 1-to-2 staff member-tocamper ratios, the program is limited in the number of participants it can accept.
Last year, the waiting list for Aaron’s Acres summer camps was about 90 kids.
“We don’t accept kids until we have the staff,” said Paskoff. “There’s a tremendous need for this type of program over the summer. The summer camp program has to happen for these families. We need the community to help us make it happen. Parents can breathe when they know their kids are going to Aaron’s Acres.”
That interaction between counselors and campers can produce experiences that are both more enjoyable and more impactful.

“Because there’s that low ratio, kids get personal attention, and the child feels really safe and secure,” Paskoff said. “They get individual attention, and the counselors aren’t overwhelmed. There’s a lot of help, support and guidance. The staff is what makes this program special. If we don’t have the staff, we’re not doing it the Aaron’s Acres way.”
Aaron’s Acres, which recently moved its headquarters to 121 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville, was formed from a summer camp conducted at the Lancaster Jewish Community Center in 1998. Today, the summer camp is one of nine programs Aaron’s Acres offers for individuals with disabilities between ages 5 and 40.
this spring and also on Saturday, Sept. 26, at the museum’s Members Day banquet.
“I was surprised and pleased,” Lewis said. “There are a lot of volunteers here that help make this place work.”
“Dave is a quiet, dedicated presence whose commitment to the museum is evident in everything he does,” museum director Patrick C. Morrison said. “He brings a remarkable work ethic and is exceptionally reliable, consistently arriving early and staying throughout the entire day. Dave has willingly taken on some of our most extensive and time-consuming scanning projects in the library and archives, approaching each task with care and precision. He is the kind of person everyone looks forward to seeing - warm, gracious, and genuinely engaging. Both staff and volunteers hold Dave in high regard.”
Lewis worked as an engineer at Mobil Oil for 30
years, designing equipment and helping it get installed. He had visited Lancaster before and decided to move to the area upon retirement.
Steve Ferrell, a friend of Lewis’ who organizes trips, had a suggestion. “Steve said, ‘Well, when you move, you’re going to become a volunteer at the museum, right?’” Lewis recalled. The answer was an easy yes. He works mostly behind the scenes.
“I’m upstairs in the archives, scanning slides and prints and negatives,” Lewis said. “I like being around the trains, being upstairs in the archives. It’s interesting seeing all the photographs. It’s something different every time you turn a page and have a different photograph. It’s been very pleasant.”
“Dave quickly became a constant and reliable presence in the library and archives,” said Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania volunteer/program coordinator Elizabeth Myers. “His
diligence has particularly shown through his assistance with scanning in the past year. He has worked on digitizing images in eight different collections, producing quality scans for the museum’s online research database. Currently, Dave is part of a duo tackling the James P. Shuman slide collection, which contains over 6,000 images to digitize.”
Occasionally, Lewis sees something that reminds him of home. “It’s been a real good experience,” he said. “Every once in a while, I’ll take a little time and wander through the exhibits. There’s a Lehigh Valley boxcar. The Lehigh Valley is my home, so that’s one of my favorite pieces of equipment.”
When he’s not volunteering at the museum, Lewis likes attending automobile races with friends. “My wife (Barbara) says I’m a transportation buff,” he said. People who would like to volunteer at the museum can email Myers at programs @rrmuseumpa.org.

Luthercare, a provider of senior living communities, services, and programs in southcentral Pennsylvania, has announced the launch of its 2026 High School Nursing Scholarship Program, designed to provide financial support to aspiring nurses and address the growing demand for health care professionals.
A total of $15,000 in scholarships will be awarded to high school seniors in Berks, Lancaster, Lebanon, and York counties who plan to pursue a nursing degree. Seniors attending public, private, or nonpublic schools, as well as homeschooled seniors, are eligible to apply. This year, one $5,000 scholarship, two $3,000 scholarships, and four $1,000 scholarships will be awarded.

Applicants are required to complete an application and write an essay - with a maximum of 750 wordsdescribing why they should receive the scholarship and why they are interested in the field of nursing. Applicants must also submit two letters of recommendation - one from a teacher, coach, or mentor and one from a community member. To learn more or apply by Thursday, April 2, visit www.luthercare.org/ scholarship.
Questions may be directed to the Luthercare Nursing Scholarship Committee at scholarship@ luthercare.org.
Luthercare’s Nursing Scholarship Program began in 2009 by offering scholarships to team members who were furthering their education and professional development. In 2020, the scholarship program was extended to local high school students who were planning to pursue a career in nursing. Since then, Luthercare has distributed $115,000 in scholarships to 83 high school students for nursing education. The program reflects the organization’s continuing commitment to quality care and the education of health care professionals.
