Reaching Out To Support Grieving Parents Ministry Looks To Expand Offerings BY ANN MEAD ASH
BASIS, a Christian support group for grieving parents, is currently operating in six locations in Lebanon, Chester, and Lancaster counties and the state of Delaware. The decades-old ministry is part of Handi-Vangelism Ministries International in Ephrata. BASIS stands for Brothers And Sisters In Sup-
port, and the ministry provides resources, educational workshops, structured gatherings, and more for bereaved couples and single parents. In July of 2020, Dan Steinman, who is now a BASIS ministry assistant, retired from his job as a maintenance mechanic to become a representative for the ministry. “Never did I picture I would be doing anything like this when I retired,” said Dan. In fact, after Dan and his wife, Phyllis, lost their son, Andy, in an auto accident four years ago, Dan did not initially attend BASIS meetings. But when Phyllis came home from meetings she attended in Akron, Dan had questions for her. “Nobody ever pictures losing a child,” stated Dan. Now, Dan wants to let those who have shared his experience of losing a child know that BASIS is there for them. See BASIS pg 4

Tips For Marketing With Websites

esidents of Strasburg Borough are invited to obtain two free trees for their properties courtesy of the borough’s Shade Tree Committee. In past years, the “street trees” had to be planted within 6 feet of the sidewalk. This year, program requirements were modified to allow for more leniency in tree placement to encourage more residents to participate in the program.

Those who would like a tree are asked to complete an order form at the borough website. A list of requirements and available trees is also given. The trees are grouped by sizes and include small trees - trident maple, crabapple and flowering plum; medium - Yoshino cherry, yellowwood and sawtooth oak; and large - red maple, red oak and American sycamore. Columnar trees, such as Armstrong red maple, are also offered for narrow streets.
This spring, members of the Shade Tree Committee will designate a day to personally plant all the trees ordered by residents. The committee also holds a tree planting in the fall. Committee members contact PA One Call to check for underground obstacles before planting and also spread mulch around the newly planted tree. “(Tree planting is) always on a Saturday - a day designated by the committee,” said Kim Rubincam, office assistant and secretary of the

would meet at the park and then follow a scenic route to Wilmington, Del., where attendees would have an ice cream social with families at the Ronald McDonald House. This house provides lodging for families with children receiving treatment from Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Patients who were well enough also attended the social. This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and capacity restrictions at the hospital and the Ronald McDonald House. Instead, the ride will be local. “We are doing a local scenic route and coming back to the park, where we will have a Kids Day for children with special needs (and their siblings) to try to make it a similar experience,” said event organizer Marsha Wagner, one of the family members who founded the Little Hands Big Plans charity. “We will have ice cream sundaes and little games for the kids to play, and a DJ will play music.” See Kids Day pg 3

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group announced a request for proposals for its next round of green project grants. The deadline to apply is Wednesday, March 31. Any Lancaster County organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant. The local club also will offer its expertise and labor to support those projects that are awarded grants. The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational, or business associations that demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort that focuses on a topic such as storm water management, See Sierra pg 3

Free Trees from pg 1 Shade Tree Committee. “We will get volunteers depending on how many trees we plant. Last spring, we did not do a planting because of COVID. In the fall, the five committee members and 10 volunteers from Lampeter-Strasburg High School planted 11 trees.” Although the Shade Tree Committee has been officially in place in the borough since 1999, planting trees is a tradition that goes back to the mid-1960s “There is a lot of history with the tree program. The borough would provide two trees to every developer who built homes,” explained borough manager Steven Echternach. “When Evergreen Nursery disappeared, the program went

dormant for a while. It got reinvigorated with a Street Tree grant and then just recently they modified the rules (so it is not) just for planting street trees along the curb. Now they can go back in the front yard, so in a way we have come full circle.” Echternach has a personal history with the tree program. “My home was built in 1965 by my parents, and I have one of the original trees in my yard - a Scarlet oak tree,” he shared. According to the Shade Tree Committee, for every 5% increase of tree canopy, stormwater runoff decreases by 2%. “The nickname for our county is (the) garden spot (of America); we are a very good
county for planting,” said Echternach, noting that he is not exactly sure how the original committee came to be all those years ago. “I can only assume that there always has been a sense in this community that trees are important and that we promote that.” Order forms, lists of available trees and requirements are available by visiting w w w. s t r a s b u r g b o r o . o r g , choosing Boards and Commissions and clicking on Shade Tree Committee. The Atlantic League announced recently that it will open its 23rd official championship season on Friday, May 28. League officials will work with team executives on additional details of the 2021 season, including COVID-19-related
safety protocols. The league is finalizing the admission of new teams, conducting player signings, and working with its Major League Baseball partners on test initiatives for the 2021 campaign. Mindful of government safety concerns, especially ball-

Veritas Community Posts Easter Events The Veritas Community will hold two events on Easter weekend. On Good Friday, April 2, Veritas will hold “A Contemplative Suffering,” a guided exhibition of contemplative art, at the Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, from 6 to 9 p.m. The exhibition utilizes visual art as a platform to engage both oneself and God through a spiritually guided, interactive experience. This exhibition comprises six stations based on the Ignatian tradition of examen, looking inward in order to balance the outward. The theme of this spiritual exercise will explore elements of an ancient Hebraic Christology commonly known as the Suffering Servant discourse. Participants are asked to preregister. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. “I have a passion for those businesses who have a great idea, a lot of grit and determination, but don’t have a huge budget for marketing,” Grim said. Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. She’s been fantastic,” Grim commented. “Every business should have a SCORE mentor.” With how important websites are, Grim advocated spending time, if not money, to develop one. Domain names can be purchased relatively inexpensively from Google, and free or low-cost site builders like Wix, Weebly, and Webs are available. The City of Lancaster aims to engage the whole community in the production of a new comprehensive plan to be adopted in 2022. A comprehensive plan is a document to guide municipal policy and decisionmaking related to growth and community development. The city has received grants totaling $170,000 from three philanthropic organizations to support the planning process, which will be inclusive, equitable, and community driven. A comprehensive plan is a policy guide that reflects community consensus and informs municipal regulatory and financial decisions. Comprehensive plans must address crucial infrastructure and services such as housing, transportation, community facilities, and utilities, but the scope is not limited to these topics. The City of Lancaster’s comprehensive plan will also consider diversity, equity, and inclusion; environmental sustainability; economic development; and other topics as identified by the community. The planning process will involve community engagement methods designed to reach all community stakeholders, particularly those who experience barriers to
