magine having the opportunity to win a designer purse every day during the month of April. That is exactly the premise of a new fundraiser being planned by Help The Fight, a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. As part of the designer purse giveaway, community members are invited to purchase a ticket, which will be entered into a random drawing. There will be 30 winners in the 30 days of April. Ticket holders must be 18 years of age or older to participate.

During the pandemic and the subsequent changes to shopping, dining, and business practices, websites have been indispensable. “More and more during COVID, (the internet) becomes the place where transactions happen. (People are) placing orders and buying products (online),” explained marketing expert Adam Grim. “ Websites are the first impression for the business. In most cases these days, people are looking at your website before they’re willing to have a call with you or stop by your location.” Grim has worked in digital marketing in Lancaster County for nearly a decade. With a business partner, he built Sparrow Websites before recently shifting his focus from doing the design work to helping business owners develop content and opening Bootstrap Local. brand new by designers Michael Kors, Kate Spade, Tory Burch, Coach and others. Sponsors are needed to fund the cost of the remaining bags. “We have a lot of styles and colors,” Charles pointed out. “With our choices, we are trying to appeal to as many people as possible.” Winners of the bags will be contacted by phone, and their names will be announced on the Help The Fight website and Facebook page. All proceeds will benefit the charity, which provides breast cancer patients with funds to buy groceries, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. It also provides funds for cancer screenings.

We have paid electric bills and bought Christmas presents by giving a family a Walmart gift card.” Charles lost her mother to breast cancer in 1989 at the age of 49. In March of 2009, her sister was diagnosed with breast cancer. Soon after, the charity began. “Within weeks of our sister’s diagnosis, the assistant at our office was also diagnosed,” Charles recalled. “My husband, Dave, and I wanted to be able to help. We held a bake sale to help with their expenses. We raised over $9,000.” She said

that in addition to the bake sale, the money was raised through sponsors and a sale of T-shirts. In 2020, Help The Fight assisted about 200 individuals. “COVID shut things down for a while. Those that needed assistance or screenings did not get them. We had a real rush when things opened,” Charles said. “Cancer is so unkind, and it does not stop during a pandemic.” Tickets for the designer purse giveaway must be purchased by Monday, March 22. “Each day we will pull a name,” explained Lynda Charles, president and founder of the organization. “The name that we pull will get the designer bag of that day. Hopefully, people will buy more than one ticket.” The giveaway replaces the organization’s previous fundraiser, a designer bag bingo. “Last year, just prior to COVID, we actually had our very first designer bag bingo at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster,” Charles reported. “People loved it but with COVID our fundraising events have altered, just as everyone else’s has. We decided to do this for the month of April.” Currently, the organization has about 20 bags that it purchased

He plans to attend Washington College to play baseball and study environmental science, with the goal of becoming a marine ecologist. Vy is a junior and the daughter of Y Thi Nguyen of Lancaster. She enjoys playing badminton outside of school and plans to pursue a career as a veterinarian. Cole is a junior and the son of Steven and Laura Younger of Lancaster. She is the senior class chairperson, a student tutor, and a member of Student Council, STEM Club, National Honor Society, and the distinguished honor roll. Outside of school, she plays AAU basketball. Jacklyn plans to attend UNC Chapel Hill to major in chemistry, with the goal of solving problems regarding plastic pollution and poor road systems.

Grim is a member of the Southern Lancaster County Chamber of Commerce and has been a guest speaker on the subject of effectively using the web to market small businesses. Additionally, he offers marketing advice with Lancaster SCORE, which provides free mentoring and education for business owners and entrepreneurs. “I’m on my second business, but I got a SCORE mentor. City Receives Grant For Art, Safety Project The City of Lancaster, in partnership with the SoWe neighborhood group and the Lancaster Housing Opportunity Partnership, has been awarded a $25,000 grant from Bloomberg Philanthropies to create a street mural at the intersection of West Strawberry Street, South Mulberry Street and West Vine Street in the Cabbage Hill neighborhood. A call for artists has been issued to select an artist to work with the neighborhood to create an artwork that reflects a collective reimagining of the intersection. This project is supported by a grant from the Bloomberg Philanthropies Asphalt Art Initiative. Support is also
being provided by Sherwin Williams. The grant will help the City of Lancaster to continue following its Ten-Year Plan for Public Art. The call for artists is open to all professional artists who live in southcentral Pennsylvania. Applicants must be age 18 or older and have proven experience with mural painting and public engagement. Submissions will be judged based on examples of relevant work, experience and recommendations. Experience making large-scale paintings and working collaboratively to complete projects is preferred, but not required. The project is in its early stages and set to progress
through the summer of 2021 with a goal of installation in early fall. A steering committee including Cabbage Hill residents, arts professionals and a member of the Public Art Advisory Board has been established. Planners and engineers from the Department of Public Works will be involved in solving design problems alongside artists and neighbors. Gettle Named New CFO at B.R. Kreider & Son B.R. Kreider & Son Inc., an excavating, paving, concrete and site management company based in Manheim, with a second location in Quarryville, recently named Craig Gettle as chief financial officer (CFO). Gettle replaced Michael Fecik who announced his retirement in January. Originally from Lebanon, Gettle returned to the area from Pittsburgh. He is a 2007 graduate of the University of
Pittsburgh and received his master’s degree from Penn State University in 2010. Gettle attends North Way Christian Community, is a member of the High Center Elizabethtown Family Business Center Executive Peer Group and is a member of Construction Financial Management Association (CFMA). He is working on finding a permanent residence in the area.
Lancaster Mennonite School will hold a drivethrough chicken barbecue at its New Danville campus, 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, on Friday, April 9. Meals may be picked up from noon to 6 p.m. Each meal will include a half-chicken, a dinner roll, a

Lady Pioneers Earn Seven District Swim Medals eighth with a 1:49.74. Individually, Horner was the top finisher for the Pioneers earning sixth place medals in both the 200 IM (2:12.36) and the 500 free with a season best time of 5:26.62. Also securing a district medal was Fluhr. Her season best 1:01.74 in the backstroke was good for seventh place. And Paisley, making her debut appearance as a freshman, stopped the clock at 56.95 in the 100 free for eighth place. She was also ninth in the 50 free. “Bre was seeded 11th,” noted Turner, “and dropped 2.5 seconds to earn a medal.” Also placing in the top 12 was Scranton with a personal best 1:03.44 in the 100 fly (10th). She was also 10th in the 100 free. Welchans grabbed 10th in the 500 free with her best time of 5:41.51 while Parido’s PR in the 100 fly (1:04.70) was good for 12th. Subaru of America Inc., joined by its two regional independent distributors, Subaru of New England and Subaru Distributors Corp., recently announced its continued commitment to supporting people affected by the COVID-19 pandemic by helping provide an additional 100 million meals to Feeding America. Each dollar helps to provide at least 10 meals secured by Feeding America on behalf of local member food banks. This donation is double the automaker’s April 2020 donation, in which it helped provide 50 million meals to the hunger-relief organization. Locally, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank will benefit from the donation. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of Feeding America, has reported that demand for food assistance is at record high levels. Thousands of families in central Pennsylvania are experiencing food insecurity for the first time as a result of the pandemic. Of those individuals, onethird are children. The Subaru franchise, with its 633 retailers nationwide, will work with Feeding America to disburse the donation to the organization’s 199 food banks across the U.S. To ensure that food banks with the highest need are served, Subaru will allocate 20% of the donation to national food programs and food banks with the highest food insecurity rates and child food insecurity rates. Furthermore, participating Subaru retailers nationwide have made supplemental donations to their local Feeding America member food banks, currently totaling an additional 5.6 million meals to those in need, totaling 105 million meals donated from Subaru. Local dealerships in central Pennsylvania that will help provide 99,000 meals to Central Pennsylvania Food Bank include Faulkner Subaru Harrisburg, Apple Subaru and Lancaster County Motors Subaru. Although it will have a different look this year because of the pandemic, Little Hands Big Plans’ 13th annual motorcycle ride to benefit the MakeA-Wish Foundation will take place on Sunday, April 25, at the Southern End Community Association’s park, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. and the ride will begin at 1 p.m. Following the ride, Kids Day will take place in the park from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. In a typical year, the group would meet at the park and then follow a scenic route to Wilmington, Del., where attendees would have an ice cream social with families at the Ronald McDonald House. This house provides lodging for families with children receiving treatment from Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital for Children. Patients who were well enough also attended the social. This year, as was the case in 2020, the motorcycle ride will not travel to Delaware because of visitation and

Featured in the convoy will be the Make-A-Wish Angel trailer. The trailer is enclosed, and its sides are covered with stars and the names of Make-AWish children who have died. One of the names is Marsha’s daughter, Harley. “My daughter, Harley, was a MakeA-Wish child, but she passed away before she got her wish,” explained Marsha. “The (first) year my
