The mission is to assist the entire family with a “two-generation approach,” said Jessica Bailey, the director of the CHS New Danville Center, which is slated to open this summer.

“Our program does identify school districts that we prioritize that are near to each site,” said Bailey. “And the goal is that families not just go to school or live

Fundraiser Will Benefit Two Strasburg Groups
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The Strasburg Community Parks Foundation and Strasburg Fire Company No. 1 have been a winning combination.
The two nonprofits are once again joining forces to host an event that will benefit both organizations.
The annual Bingo, Baskets & Beef BBQ fundraiser will be held Saturday, March 21, at the Strasburg Fire Company, 203 W. Franklin St., Strasburg. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m., and the bingo games will begin at 6 p.m.
There will be 10 regular games of bingo, and the winner will receive a cash prize. There will also be three special games with the first game’s prize being two tickets to Sight & Sound Theatre. The second special game’s prize will be cash, and the prize for the third special bingo game will be a gift certificate to Appel Valley Butcher.
The baskets have mostly spring and Easter themes, as well as home décor; candy, stuffed animals, and activity books for children; a smoothie blender; wine and chocolates; skin care, spring-themed plush throws; a bird feeding basket with bird bath that looks like a nest; bedding plants; baked goods; a gardening basket with tools; and a Summer Lemons Italian products basket. Three families got together and donated a “Gotta Love Strasburg” basket filled with gift cards to eight restaurants and shops in the Strasburg area.

“Simon Peter is on trial, so it takes place in a courtroom,” said director Dorothy Smith, a Salunga resident who has been with Promise Players since 2012. “He’s on trial for claiming that Jesus is the Son of God, the prophesied Messiah, and they call witnesses in who had contact with Jesus. The witnesses come and testify to how they were (impacted) by Jesus.”
Her husband, Philip, is the music director. The couple produced the same musical with a different group in 2009. “Compared to last year’s show that we did, ‘Muddled Memories,’ the music is easier,” Philip said. “Both the piano is easier and the singing is easier. So, compared to that, it seems much simpler, but there are a few places here and there that are challenging for the singers. There is dissonance, that is two notes that are real close together and make a crunchy sound that are tricky, but compared to last year, it’s easier music-wise.”
Dorothy added, “Probably one of the biggest challenges with the music is a good bit of it goes quite fast, so you really have to spit the words out quickly.”
Shawn Gollatz will be taking part in his fourth Promise Players production. “It’s my first musical, so being a tenor is a bit challenging
because four-part harmony is not natural,” said Gollatz, who is in the chorus, will portray John and James, and will sing a solo. “One of the things I learned, when you listen to a song, the melody that you hear sometimes isn’t necessarily what anybody actually sings. It’s just a collection of chords, and the way your voice works, you can only sing one note at a time, so you could pick one of those.”
Several members of the cast recently joined the group. “About half the cast is new to shows with Promise Players,” said Dorothy. “This is their first time to act with us and first time to be exposed to us for some of them, so that’s always kind of fun and exciting.”
Mamie Hilton, a teacher at Central Manor Elementary School, is one of the newcomers. “My stepmother, Shonda Hilton, was auditioning because she plays piano with Dorothy, and so she said, ‘Do you want to try, too?’ And I said, ‘Sure, why not?’” Mamie said.
Mamie will portray Mary Magdalene. “I get to come on the stage
at one point in scene 11, and then I get to speak to the judge and talk about my experience with Jesus,” she said. “Then I have a solo.”
One of stage manager Marty Raine’s tasks is collecting props for the show. “The stage manager is the director’s right-hand man,” the Strasburg Township resident said. “Dorothy, as the director, makes all the decisions. I’m the one who has to remember and remind everyone when they forget. ... With a cast this big and with everything that’s going on, one of the challenges is just remembering it all. I have to keep track of 28 people and everything that 28 different people are doing.”
Guests can expect a typical, funny Promise Players performance. “There’s a lot of humor in it,” Dorothy said. “Promise Players in general likes to do humorous things oftentimes, but we always like to have a good, strong message. You get both the strong message of Jesus and His life and the miraculous things that He did but mixed with lots of humor.”

Group to Present Purimshpiel

The performance will take place on Sunday, March 8, at 1:30 p.m. at Congregation Shaarai Shomayim, 75 E. James St., Lancaster. Attendees should enter the building through the James Street doors.
In this year’s production, the 1964 Broadway musical “Fiddler on the Roof” meets the Book of Esther. There is an opening for a new queen,
and Hadassah, a Jewish 18-year-old, wants to apply, even though she knows that a Jewish woman has never been chosen and probably never will be. She changes her name to Esther, keeps her religion a secret, and wins the contest held to choose the queen. Meanwhile, Haman, the prime minister, convinces the king to issue a decree to kill all the Jews. Esther and her older cousin, Mordechai, who raised her, must save their

Art Studio to Feature the Work of Tama Etra
“Natural Instinct,” the latest collection of paintings from local artist Tama Etra, will be featured at Mulberry Art Studios this March. The show will open with a First Friday reception on March 6 from 5 to 8 p.m.
Etra is a senior artist exploring several mediums, including collage, oils, acrylics and watercolor. Her painting is reflective of her love for nature and her desire to preserve it for future generations to come.
Etra was born in Connecticut and raised in New York. As a child, she enjoyed spending long times upstate hiking and camping but also enjoyed the pleasures of the city and, of course, summers at the beach.
She attended New York Technical College as a com-

mercial artist in 1978 and completed her bachelor’s degree at Springfield College in Massachusetts. Etra came to Lancaster in 2005.
Mulberry Art Studios is located at 19-21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. For more information and to schedule a private viewing, call the gallery at 717-295-1949.

“This will be the fifth time the Strasburg Community Park, the fire company, the Strasburg-area community and those who enjoy playing bingo will come together for an evening of fun,” said Barb Rathbone-Frank, who is the event chairperson. “We joined together to hold bingos starting in 2024. It was great to see how popular the events have become all to benefit two worthwhile nonprofits in the Strasburg area.”
She noted that bigger will be better. “The Strasburg Fire Company members have increased the seating

areas for our guests so we are now able to accommodate many more participants for a fun evening out,” Rathbone-Frank said. “All can come and enjoy a nice barbecue sandwich, soup and other refreshments before and during the event that are prepared by Strasburg fire police and firefighters and priced a la carte. The fire company members are great cooks, and this is an opportunity for them to raise funds needed to purchase a replacement tanker truck.”
This event will bring in funds beyond what was raised at the 51st annual Spring Donation & Consignment Sale in late February.
Rathbone-Frank said the Strasburg Fire Company responds to more than 200 emergency and fire calls each year, adding that the all-volunteer fire company serves Strasburg Borough and portions of Strasburg, Eden and Paradise townships.
Mike Lockard, Strasburg Fire Company’s chaplain and fire police captain, stated that the funds will be put to good use. “We’re still in need of funds to purchase a new tanker,” he said. “Our present tanker is 26 years old, and we’d like to retire it. The fire equipment manufacturer contacted us recently to let us know the tanker will be ready for us in the spring of 2027, which is one year ahead of what we anticipated.”
Lockard added that tankers are crucial because they are used to shuttle water to the main fire scene. “Tankers are especially important in fighting fires in rural areas,” he said. “When there is a major fire, more fire companies are needed to transport water to assist the fire company charge. We use our tankers when there are structure, barn and chimney fires.”
The Strasburg Community Park is a 12-acre nature park that features walking trails and native landscape plants. In the summer, the park hosts four family-friendly concerts that are free to the public within the park’s outdoor amphitheater. The park is located at 151 Precision Ave. in

in the area, but they could be getting an education in the area themselves or just working in the area to qualify for a program. Those are the three school districts that we focus on.”
The New Danville Center, located at 393 Long Lane, Lancaster, is accepting applications. Catherine Hershey Schools are for students between the ages of 6 weeks old and 5 years old and operate yearround. Go to www.chslearn.org to register or for more information.
“We’re considered an early childhood education facility,” Bailey said, noting that the New Danville location is hoping to welcome 100 students from low-income or underresourced families. “We really look to support families to make sure that they are thriving when they leave our program. Our big goal and our big mission is to help the entire family. Not only do we provide that early childhood education and care for students during the day, but we’re also providing support for our families, (finding) resources for them to help families set goals, and to really support them to be in a position where they are making the most out of all that they can.”
No closing date for applications has been established. “We do work through our application process here in the start of the new year,” Bailey said. “We’re accepting applications for our families, and we’d love to be able to see families all throughout our three districts applying. Once they fill out their application, we will be connecting with them and following through with the process until we’ve been able to determine the appropriate amount of students to be able to fill our building.”

Bailey stated that the application process is straightforward.
“There’s an online registration where we would ask for some information that comes to our admissions department,” she said.
“From there, we would reach out with phone calls and connections in person to be able to make sure we have the most up-to-date, most accurate information to be able to make the best decision for our families. Since we do have to make certain qualifications, we do make sure we really have those deep conversations with families to ensure our process is just.”
Catherine Hershey Schools is a nonprofit organization and a subsidiary of the Milton Hershey School. “That’s part of where we come from and the long line and legacy of the Hersheys and all that they created,” Bailey said. “A lot of people aren’t familiar with the fact that Milton Hershey owned a candy company here in Lancaster. That’s part of the reason we’ve opened in Dauphin County, and Lancaster is really to build on the heritage and the legacy that both Milton and Catherine left in those areas. It’s exciting to be able to do that.”
The New Danville location will be the fourth Catherine Hershey School and the first in Lancaster County with more to follow. “Currently we have three operational centers in Dauphin County,” said

Bailey. “Our first to open was in Hershey, the second was in Harrisburg, and our third one opened just this year in Middletown. We have our first site in Lancaster, us here in New Danville, and then following us will be a site in Elizabethtown and a site in Lancaster city, hopefully by 2027.”
Bailey stated that Catherine Hershey Schools’ subject matter is a draw “We focus on a play-based curriculum,” she said. “Kids need play at this age, and we all hear in the education world how that trickle-down effect of development and skills has an effect on our youngest generation. We really focus on that play-based (curriculum), leaning into children’s interests and creating projects that are meaningful to them that they can explore throughout their time here.”
A key objective is preparing students for the rest of their schooling. “Our goal is to get them ready for kindergarten, and ‘ready’ for each child is a little bit different,” said Bailey. “Some children are ready and raring to go with more information, and some kiddos just need to learn how to exist in their own beautiful space. We have the opportunity to build and create that and really support the children individually and also make sure the families know how to support their children individually, which is really a key part too.”

This is what Catherine Hershey Schools’ classrooms in New Danville will resemble.
