She went on to list the variety of services Advoz provides. “We support folks through mediation, through divorce and

Aaron’s Acres isn’t intentionally and deliberately expanding. But by responding to the needs of the community, Aaron’s Acres is growing organically.
One of its newer programs, Kindness Konnections, is taking a different approach to giving back to the same community that Aaron’s Acres is already serving.
“I like the phrase ‘natural evolution,’” said Madison Heider, the program coordinator at Aaron’s Acres. “We’ve had discussions about how this program can continue to grow. There’s a need for it in the community. I think it’s a natural progression of Aaron’s Acres mission to support participants in our community.”
Located at 1861 Charter Lane, Suite 114, Lancaster, Aaron’s Acres serves and enriches the lives of children and young adults with developmental and intellectual disabilities. A community service group, Kindness Konnections works with
other local nonprofits to provide participants ages 22 to 40 opportunities to work in the community, explore new social skills in new settings and elevate confidence levels.
“Our group is getting together, and we’re giving back to the community,” said Heider. “It’s a way for our participants to get out there and do something meaningful. It’s a new expression of our programs. We reach out to organizations and go out and do some work.”
Aaron’s Acres offers its Kindness Konnections program twice a year, once in the spring and once in the fall. Both sessions are eight weeks in length, and the group meets to perform tasks and work together on Mondays from 1 to 3 p.m.
The spring 2026 session of Kindness Konnections began on Feb. 2, and the fall session will commence on Monday, Oct. 5.
“We’re trying to create an inclusive experience,” said Heider. “We’re meeting at different locations and doing the work at

cards for Four Diamonds patients. “It’s in the middle of the night when most people are pretty tired, but (the students) try to keep the energy up and keep people involved, not wanting to go to bed or go on their phones,” said Ainsli Goodrich, who is co-president of the L-S Mini-THON club. “I think it’s important because it gets the whole student body together for a big event, and it also spreads awareness for pediatric cancer. And it just helps the kids.”
Club co-president Annie Kirumba stated, “Getting the school involved really brings to light how much of a struggle pediatric cancer is. Staying up from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. is supposed to be hard, but it’s not a fraction of how hard fighting cancer is. It brings awareness, and by getting everyone involved, you can raise more money.”
The event is only for L-S students, but members of the community can contribute to the fundraising efforts by going to https://fourdiamonds .donordrive.com/lamp strashsminithon2026.
The Mini-THON committee holds activities throughout the school year to raise money. “In the

fall, we have a gold-gold football game, where we sell gold T-shirts because gold is the color of pediatric cancer (awareness), and then the student section wears those shirts, and that money also goes to Four Diamonds,” said Annie.
On “Pioween,” students who dress in a costume can pay $2 to attend a Halloween party, where they play games, eat snacks, and watch a Halloween movie before having a costume contest.
Club members convene regularly. “We meet on Flex 2 (periods) in the cafeteria with a big planning committee,” Annie said. “We start the meetings by saying hello and giving updates, and then we split off into different committees.” One committee plans Diamond Days, spirit days leading up to the Mini-THON. Another group organizes a school-wide “lip dub,” where everyone in the school comes into the hallways to make a music video.
The Mini-THON committee cannot do it alone. “I’d like give a shoutout to our PTO and our teachers and coaches,” said Shehan. “They give a ton of food donations and also help with chaperoning. We’re very grateful for their support. Our committee oversees everything, and most of the clubs in the school step up to run some sort of activity. We’re like the coordinators of the event, but all of the different clubs and sports teams all pitch in.”
Four Diamonds reports it has assisted 100% of the childhood cancer patients treated at Penn State Health Children’s Hospital.
“It’s a local pediatric cancer center with an oncology unit,” Shehan said. “They also have a research facility where they’re working to find cures and treatments. For any kid that’s a Four Diamonds kid, they have social workers that work with their insurance companies, so the families never get a bill. The money we raise helps the families focus on care for their children, and not the medical expenses that come with it.”

custody mediation, which is a really tough transition for families to go through,” said Rittenhouse. “We can help find communication patterns that can have people advocate for what is most important to them. That’s one of the ways that we serve the community. Another way is through our restorative justice program for young people involved in the criminal legal system,”
She explained how that process works. “We receive referrals from juvenile justice for young folks who have gotten in trouble with the law, and we do the victim offender conferencing program,” said Rittenhouse. “We have conversations with the young person. We have conversations with the victim. If everyone agrees, we bring them together for a face-toface dialogue around what accountability means, how do we make things right when we mess up, because the reality is we’re going to mess up as humans.”
She added that the group also trains clients. “We want people to have more skills to engage proactively in constructive conflict on their own as well,” Rittenhouse said.

Mennonite Life Plans Pennsylvania Dutch Language Series
Mennonite Life, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, invites those who wish to learn and speak Pennsylvania Dutch, also known as Pennsylvania German, to a six-session series studying and practicing the language. The series will take place on Tuesdays, March 3 and 17, April 7 and 21, and May 5 and 19. Classes will meet from 6:30 to 8 p.m. in the Mennonite Life Community Room.

Mennonite Life’s vision is diverse communities connecting across boundaries by knowing and valuing their own and each other’s stories of life, faith, cultures, and histories.

During the dinner, clients will provide anecdotal evidence of what Advoz can accomplish. “People should come to the auction if they want to support our work, and people should come to the auction if they are interested in hearing stories of reconciliation and healing,” Rittenhouse said. “I think that in a day and age where we have increased polarization and increased sensitivity across different ideologies and ways of living, we need to hear stories of folks that are connecting across differences. We need to hear stories of bridge-building. They help us to imagine new ways of being together, and our event is going to highlight stories from participants. ... I think that it will be a day of encouragement and good news that counteracts so much of the division that is present in our world.”
Rittenhouse is hopeful that hearing the accounts will encourage guests to keep contributing. “We do much of our work through volunteers,” she said. “If someone is interested in getting involved, this would be a great way to understand the work of our highly trained, community volunteers.”
Class instructors will lead informal lessons based on the book “Speaking Amish: A Beginner’s Introduction to Pennsylvania German” by Lillian Stoltzfus. The book is available in the Mennonite Life store and at www.mennonitelife.org/ shop. Lessons will focus on casual conversation, with plenty of time for practice.
People with all levels of experience are welcome, from beginners to fluent speakers.
There is a suggested donation per session. Participants should plan to attend all six sessions and may register for the series by calling

Benefit Dinner Will Shine Light on Alaska
BY CAT SHANNON
Help a mission thousands of miles away while enjoying food and fellowship at the second annual LightShine Ministries Dinner. The benefit will be held on Thursday, March 12, from 5:30 to 9 p.m. at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster.
“We will be presenting all the different aspects of our ministry,” shared Tom Denlinger, founder and ministry director of Mount Joy-based LightShine Ministries. “Our goal is to mobilize followers of Jesus Christ here in Pennsylvania who desire to use their gifts and talents for building local churches in wilderness areas, building Bible camps for Alaska native teens and youth, as well as serving many other ministries in Alaska.”

The dinner will feature a buffet of entrees, sides and salad, served along with a dessert bar featuring homemade desserts from LightShine volunteers.

“The meal will be prepared by the pastor of the Lancaster Alliance Church along with the LightShine volunteer staff,” Denlinger said.
Ken Thomas will be the banquet’s keynote speaker.

“Ken Thomas is a pastor and Bible teacher who has 38 years’ experience living in Alaska,” Denlinger explained.
“He will be sharing some amazing stories, including a harrowing experience being stranded on a mountain southeast of Fairbanks after a plane crash.”
Proceeds from the banquet will be used to support the work of LightShine Ministries, which has been serving ministries in Alaska for 31 years.
Wrestling Event Set
Three Legacies Wrestling (3LW) will present “Limitless” on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Ville Courts at Millersville University, 108 Shenks Lane, Millersville. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., with a breakthrough match at 6:40 p.m. and the main
card at 7 p.m.
The show will include the same style of professional wrestling as WWE and will feature 3LW stars, including founder and former WWE superstar Ricardo Rodriguez. To purchase tickets, visit https://3lwtix.com.
“The money being raised at this event will be used for purchasing building materials that will help finish two important buildings that were built last year at our missions base,” Denlinger remarked.
LightShine Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state. Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.
“We love people and desire for you to join our family of people who love Jesus Christ and want to be used by Him to serve others,” Denlinger said.
He emphasized that there are many ways people can serve the ministry.
“Many people think that if they don’t have an ‘up-front’ gift like a pastor or worship leader, that they can’t be used by God in ministry,” he said. “We specialize in connecting people with a willing heart to serve with the perfect assignment in a beautiful place that has a lot of needs.”
Tickets for the benefit must be reserved by Saturday, Feb. 28. To make a reservation, contact Nancy Shaffer at Nbrown.brahma@ gmail.com.

(nonprofits’) locations.
We’re open to any kind of work. But we’ve found that assembly-line-like work is the most successful.”
“Communications are absolutely a form of kindness,” added Heider. “Just giving back in any way is kindness. Personally, I think kindness is so important. It can change so many things in the world.”
At this point, participants in the Kindness Konnections program have engaged in work at Girls on the Run, the local Power Packs Project and Lafayette Fire Company. The workers have also cleaned at the North Museum of Nature and Science and the local Lives Changed By Christ (LCBC) and have assisted with a large mailing project for Servant Stage.
“We hope (participants) are getting some social skills and connecting with people,” said Heider. “Just completing a task can be super special. We’re hoping these experiences could lead to opportunities outside of our organization. Overall, being in different settings allows them to learn what other organizations do for others.”
An extension of an Aaron’s Acres’ summer camp program, Kindness Konnections was established in the fall of 2024 to serve the families of two individuals.
Currently, eight participants ages 22 to 40 are enrolled in the program.
The participants reside in Manheim, Mount Joy, Elizabethtown, Jonestown, Berks County and Dauphin County.
“(The participants are) Aaron’s Acres’ heart,” said Heider. “They’re just look-

ing for connections. They’re our friends. It’s generally just such a community who goes out with us.”
“To me, the best part is seeing participants reacting to their abilities,” added Heider, “and finding out what they can do and how much they can do. That and the connections they make. Just seeing what can be accomplished is my favorite part.”
The Kindness Konnections program maintains a 1-to-4 staff-to-participant ratio.
“Our numbers are always dependent on staffing,” said Heider. “If our participants’ number would go higher than eight, we’d have to hire another staff member.”
As program director, Heider assumes the lead for the Kindness Konnections program. She is assisted by counselor Hayley Wilson.
“In this population, (a staff member’s role) is a lot more guidance and oversight,” said Heider. “We’re doing more modeling. We’re always there to support in that capacity. Our role is always just to be there. Most of the work is done entirely by the participants. They’re doing their job and we’re doing our job, and that’s what makes it complete.”
In addition to the Kindness Konnections initiative, Aaron’s Acres also sponsors summer camps for children and adults with disabilities; The Social Scene; the Chuckie Magee Flag Football and Cheerleading League; a spring sports program; Dramability; and family classes that offer activities in fitness, art and cooking.

PennDOT Posts Traffic Safety Survey
The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is seeking input from Pennsylvanians on traffic safety and driving behaviors through an anonymous online survey that will be available through Saturday, Feb. 28, at www .pa.gov/dotsafety. The survey will help inform PennDOT on how it can continue to improve traffic
safety and save lives across the commonwealth.
PennDOT invests nearly $30 million annually in federal grant funds statewide, partnering with educational and enforcement grantees, to deliver programming each year to help prevent crashes, fatalities, and injuries on roadways. This survey seeks information on drivers’ behavior behind the
wheel to better inform PennDOT’s program planning. The voluntary survey covers several topics, including seat belt use, impaired driving, speeding, and distracted driving, as well as bicycle, pedestrian, and motorcycle safety.

“This is a unique piece just because of the history of it,” said Randy Fisher, who’s been the service manager at 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services for six years. “That alone is worth its weight in gold as far as memories go. The truck has been drawing a lot of attention because it was at the (Twin) Towers on the day of the (9/11) attacks, a day we will never forget. I wanted it to be part of history. I wanted to see it recognized this year.”
Located at 501B E. Main St., New Holland, 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is currently performing work on a very special fire engine. The local authorized dealer and service shop for all types of emergency vehicles is refurbishing, repairing and generally

reconditioning a former Fire Department of New York City (FDNY) tower ladder truck that served honorably on Sept. 11, 2001, at the World Trade Center in Manhattan.
“The truck is in pretty rough shape,” said Fisher. “(The owner) wants to be able to drive it. Setting up the ladder is probably not going to happen. We’ve gotten it to a point where it can be driven, but there are other issues with it.”
The former FDNY ladder truck that 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is working on is
a 2001 Seagrave Truck Number 9 Aerial Scope, with a bucket on the end of its ladder. To this point, 10-8’s technicians have performed about 25 hours of work on the ladder truck, replacing windows and a thermostat and checking its engine and brakes.
The tower ladder truck was first taken to 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services for reconditioning in September of 2025.
“It’s just fundamental stuff for now,” said Fisher, a resident of Lititz. “We’re a Seagrave dealer, and the

owner reached out to us. He needed help, and we told him we’d help him out where we can. Renovations do get pretty labor intensive.”
Paul Medeiros, a resident of North Carolina who is associated with the Virginia Fire Museum and the Old Dominion Historical Fire Society, is the owner of the Seagrave ladder truck.
“(10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services is) helping out because of the meaning of the project,” said Medeiros. “They’re a humble group. They’re helping me as much as they can. We’re on hold with five grand into it.”
Medeiros’ 2001 tower ladder truck was damaged at the World Trade Center in New York City on 9/11. Four of the fire engine’s 14 crew members lost their lives at the Twin Towers that day.
“We knew about 10-8, so we took it there,” said Medeiros. “They’ve done a lot of work, but they’re in a holding pattern now. If I can get some donations, we can keep it rolling.”
Medeiros originally purchased the tower ladder truck for $10,000 at an auction site.
“It happened fast,” said Medeiros. “The truck was going to a scrap yard, and we saved it. Trucks like that get decommissioned and they get torn apart. I’ve been through a lot with it.”
Medeiros’ plans for the
New York City firefighters display the ladder truck that was damaged at the World Trade Center in 2001.
explained. “What it’s really looking to do is set up a scenario like ‘Les Mis’ or a couple of other revolt musicals that allow you to poke a little bit of fun at it.”
Ditzler expounded, “To overintellectualize, it goes back to the plays of Bertolt Brecht - ‘Mother Courage,’ ‘The Threepenny Opera,’ - where it takes this stylized fourth-wall-breaking approach to satirize and have a little bit of a cynical edge about the world that we live in and have always lived in.”
L-S students will put on the musical Thursday, March 5, through Saturday, March 7, at the Lampeter-Strasburg High School Performing Arts Center, 1600 Book Road, Lancaster. The March 5 and 6 shows will start at 7 p.m. There will be a 2 p.m. matinee on March 7, and the curtain will come down after a performance that evening at 7 p.m. Doors will open an hour prior to each show. Tickets can be purchased by going to https://hs.l-spioneers .org/spring-musical and will also be available at the door.
“As the name suggests, it’s a very interesting show,” said Micah Drouillard, who will portray Officer Lockstock. “It provides a lot of comedic relief, and it’s great for families, all ages. The music is good. It refers to a lot of things, but it’s also very blunt in some senses, which is very funny.”
Mia LaFontaine, who plays Hope Cladwell, noted that there is more to the musical than humor.
“While it is funny, it gives a great message,” she said.

“I think it’s really important that we tell this story in the show through the challenging music that we’re taking on, the big dance numbers, the parodies of other musicals, and just having fun and telling a great story on stage.”
“Hope starts the show very naive and kind of taking in what everyone’s telling her,” said Mia. “She’s an almost ditzy blonde, and then throughout the show, she has a big change, and she meets and falls in love with Bobby Strong. And then she changes throughout the show towards the end, and she becomes kind of a fellow revolutionary with Bobby.”
Trenton Breneman is taking on the character Bobby Strong. “My role is kind of like the hero of the show,” he said. “I think the main challenge is keeping the energy high, as he’s kind of a driving force for the whole thing to come from start to end and tell the whole story.”
Amara Russell is Little Sally. “Little Sally is one of the comedic relief characters in this show,” she said. “She’s also kind of the co-narrator with Officer Lockstock. She definitely has her moments. She’s very much revolutionary. She is behind Bobby in that sense, and she’s also a driving force for the show. She symbolizes some of the innocence in the show in trying to keep the revolutionaries on track morally.”
In addition to Micah, Mia, Trenton, and Amara, the main cast is composed of Isaac Staley (Senator

Fipp), Luke Metzger (Tiny Tom), Luke Lozada (Little Beck Two Shoes), Remy Colosi (Rosie the Stockfish), Elliot Holmes (Caldwell B. Cladwell), Nick Weaver (Old Man Strong), Leiana Smathers (Soupy Sue), Amelia Knarr (Josephine Strong), Xavier Thomas (Billy Boy Bill), Finlee Parrish (Penelope Pennywise), Logan LaFontaine (Mr. McQueen), Jalen Coon (Hot Blades Harry), Jack Hohenwarter (Dr. Billeaux), Maria Glick (Mrs. Millenium), and Georgia
Spahn (Officer Barrell).
“We have a really great lead cast this year. We have a great cast in general this year,” Ditzler said. “That cast came with some really incredible vocalists, and this is a Tony Award-winning musical for its music. ... This is a very unique musical with oddball characters, and we had a lot of really unique and fun and funny kids, and so we knew it was a good opportunity to really be able to do a unique and funny musical, utilizing all of them.”

Penn State Extension will offer several food safety certification courses. To register for any of these courses and for more information, call 877-345-0691 or visit https://extension.psu .edu/food-safety-manager -certificate-training-options.
The ServSafe Food Safety Manager course will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Tuesdays, March 10 and 17, in Room 149 at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The exam will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday, March 24.
The in-person trainings will teach participants how to prevent contamination by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling, and serving food and by sanitizing food service facilities. The course will be led by certified ServSafe instructors.
The course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, learning materials, and exam. The deadline to register for the course and exam is Tuesday, March 3.
The TAP Online Food Safety Manager Certification course will also be offered. This course helps food service managers, chefs, caterers, cooks, health officials, and inspectors prepare to take a Food Protection Manager certification exam, such as ServSafe.
The online course is self-paced, can be started anytime throughout the year, and must be completed within 180 days of enrollment. While the online portion can be taken anytime, the exam is conducted in person. There is a fee.
Participants who complete the in-person or online course and pass the proctored multiple-choice exam with a score of 70% or higher will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certificate is valid for five years.
A third option, the Food Safety Manager Certification Prep Course, will be available as a live online webinar that will prepare participants for the certification exam. Participants will receive live instruction from food safety experts without needing to travel.
A textbook will be mailed before the first day’s class. After the course, participants can choose from several certification exam options, available in multiple languages. There are separate fees for the course and the exam. Participants are responsible for registering and paying for their chosen exam.
All course and exam options meet the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture requirements for the Food Employee Certification Act.
B.R. Kreider & Son Acquires Assets of Andrews Excavating
B.R. Kreider & Son Inc., an excavating, paving and site management company based in Manheim, recently announced the asset purchase of Andrews Excavating in Willow Street. The new team members will operate out of one of B.R. Kreider’s three locations in Manheim, Quarryville or Lebanon.
According to Brent Kreider, president of B.R. Kreider & Son, both companies have served clients for 90 years. He said that acquiring Andrews will enable the company to better serve clients in south central Pennsylvania, Maryland and Delaware.
Food Pantry Sets Pancake Breakfast Fundraiser
Mission Food Pantry will hold a pancake breakfast fundraiser on Saturday, Feb. 28, from 7:30 to 10:30 a.m. in the gym at Mission Church, 651 Lampeter Road, Lancaster.
Mission Food Pantry is seeking support from the community to continue its ministry as it expands to help more people. The food pantry was started in April of 2020 and gave 200 boxes of food to families in its first month. Now, Mission Food Pantry gives
food nearly 1,500 times each month to families across the county.
Attendees of the breakfast will learn about the heart of the ministry, hear testimonies of recipients and volunteers, and learn where help is most needed.
There is a set cost per person. Children in kindergarten or younger may eat for free.
For more information or to receive help from the food pantry, visit www .missionfoodpantry.com.
Andrews has been serving customers in south central and eastern Pennsylvania and northern Maryland since 1936. The company is led by Mark Rineer, who was a long time vice president that purchased the company from the Andrews family members in 2016 upon their retirement. As Rineer approached retirement, he felt that the two 90-year organizations would be a good fit for his team and to continue serving his clients. The acquisition happened on Feb. 2. B.R. Kreider & Son will acquire a select list of equipment and a number of remaining projects.

2001 Seagrave fire engine include getting it drivable so the truck can take part in a commemoration of the 25th anniversary of the 9/11 tragedy in Harrisburg in July.
“That’s what we’re hoping will be our outcome,” said Medeiros.
“I would say we’re about halfway to where (Medeiros) wants it to be,” said Fisher. “We want to make sure it starts. He may want to do something to it himself. But no one is getting rich on this project.”
A full-service Seagrave fire trucks and Life Line ambulances dealer, 10-8 Emergency Vehicle Services typically performs about two renovations a year.
“It’s a smaller part of our business,” said Fisher. “The emergency world is very unique. There’s a lot going on with a fire truck. We do everything the customer asks, and we give them a quality product.”
