Depression hit artist Jeremy Miller hard during the first shutdown in 2020. As a way of coping, he focused his paintbrush on an uplifting subject: sunflowers. “Every year, I do a collection. The way I keep myself motivated as an artist is to come up with an idea and work with it all year long,” Miller explained. He had initially planned to feature pottery, with the theme of service, but 2019’s collection, “Meet Me in the Garden,” had made a lasting impression. “When I was working on that show, the flower that showed up more than any other was the sunflower. As someone with depression, the yellow just makes you happy.”

Strasburg Fire Company members (from left) Lenny Weitzel, Rick Wentz, and Mike Lockard stand next to the Tac that the company purchased in December. Funds raised by a chicken barbecue, chicken corn soup, and sub sandwich sale to be held on Feb. 27 will help pay for the new apparatus.

Chicken, Chicken, Sub Sandwich Fire Company Plans Mud Sale Alternative

“The fire company is not having their annual mud sale,” said Strasburg Fire Company member Isaac Fisher, who noted that the nearly 50-year tradition was canceled because the event is not advisable during the COVID-19 pandemic. Isaac is enthusiastic, however, about the alternative fundraiser the organization has planned, which will involve sales of chicken barbecue, soup, and sandwiches on the same day the mud sale would have been held. “We have done this before, and we usually sell out,” Isaac noted. On Friday, Feb. 26, the fire company will sell chicken corn soup only by takeout at the station, 203 Franklin St., Strasburg, from noon to 5 p.m. On Saturday, Feb. 27, a barbecue, soup, and sandwich sale will feature chicken barbecue meals; chicken corn soup; American sub sandwiches with ham, lettuce, tomato, and onion; and ham and cheese sand-

wiches on round rolls. All items will be available for takeout on Feb. 27, beginning at 10 a.m. Cash sales will be made on a first-come first-served basis until all the food is sold.

“We normally make $75,000 from the mud sale, and we have to try to figure out ways to make money in different avenues.” Chicken meals will include a halfchicken, a baked potato, a roll, coleslaw, a whoopie pie, and a beverage for one price. “We will sell gallons and quarts, and we provide the container (for the chicken corn soup),” said Isaac. Organizers have devised a driveup system where each car will be met by a volunteer who will take the order, and then the car will move forward for the occupants to receive their order.

In December 2020, the fire company purchased a new piece of equipment called a Tac, a trucksized apparatus that seats four volunteers, boasts four-wheel-drive, can hold 300 gallons of water, and is fitted with a pump. “We got it for smaller calls,” said Amos Fisher, who is co-chairing the fundraiser with Ivan Fisher. “(The idea is) to save wear and tear on the bigger units.” Amos said the $300,000 vehicle will be used for trash fires, brush fires, and car fires, among other calls when a full-size fire truck is not necessary. “It’s a smaller version of your basic fire engine,” said Amos, who noted that some fire company members have wanted a Tac for quite some time, but that the fire company began diligently working toward purchasing one about a year ago. “We figured out this is what we need,” said Amos. “We were trying to raise money for a new piece for a couple of years, and this made the most sense for the company.”

Painting parties - events in which instructors walk participants through the steps of creating specific images - have become popular within the last decade. The classes are a safe way to be adventurous. For people who want to push themselves further, flow painting, also called fluid art, may be the next step.

Eventually, several of Miller’s more than 100 pieces of sunflower artwork made their way to the Strasburg-Heisler Library, 143 Precision Ave., Strasburg, and into the hands of executive director Kristin Fernitz. Miller has served as a teaching artist at the library for the past three years, and since the shutdown, he has filmed art projects youngsters can do at home. At the request of children’s programs coordinator Wendy Jones, Miller made a video on sunflowers and talked about sadness and dealing with emotions. After seeing the sunflower art lesson and Miller’s artwork, Fernitz knew she had found the answer to a question that had been plaguing her: how could the library draw visitors’ attention to the back room where the library’s junior and young adult fiction collection is housed? She asked Miller to paint sunflowers on a closet door at the end of the hallway and make the background bright blue. Miller prepped the door at the end of 2020 and finished the painting in January. Using heavy-bodied acrylic paint, he applied ultramarine blue before adding two giant sunflowers that incorporate five shades of yellow. “It’s gorgeous. You can’t miss it,” Fernitz said. “You walk in the front door, and it just grabs you.” “It creates a point of light in what could be a darker color,” Miller added, noting that he appreciates the metaphor for life. “During COVID, a lot of people were faced with ‘What’s my purpose?’ I’m not a nurse, not a doctor, not an essential worker. I’m an artist. But this is one way I can help. (This artwork) reminds us there are still reasons to hope and to invest in one another.” Visitors are encouraged to stop by the library, take selfies with the sunflowers, upload them to social media, and tag #Strasburg Sunflowers, @sbglibrary, and @minisunflowersmiles. “Even if you need to cover up your beautiful smile (with a mask), you can still show others that you shine,” Miller said. “By tagging your photo, you also heighten awareness of the great things the library is doing in this remarkable little town.” For curbside hours and more information about the library, readers may visit www.strasburg library.org or call 717-687-8969.

L-S Rollers Cap Season With Win Over Crusaders

MONA STEINHAUER

Lampeter-Strasburg’s bowling team wrapped up the 2020-21 season with back-to-back matches, facing Garden Spot at home on February 11 and traveling to Leisure Lanes one day later to take on Lancaster Catholic. The Pioneers finished with mixed results, dropping a 7-0 result to the Spartans before capping the season with a 5-2 victory over the Section Four Crusaders. Nick Bukowski got off to a strong start, rolling Lampeter’s highest game of the match, a 173, and finishing with a 486 series. Ethan Snyder was eight pins back and rolled a 166 in his third game. Sawyer Lancaster also went over the 400 mark with a 425 while Kaite Pope (373) and Evan Mize (366) rounded out the top five. Friday’s win over the Crusaders was a battle for the top individual team score. Bukowski opened with a 228 but Snyder, consistent all day, rolled a 174

third game to lead L-S with a 467. Bukowski settled for a 461, nipping teammates Lancaster and Mize by a single pin. Pope rolled two games and Jake Haas one to round out the scoring. “The team really did improve each week,” said head coach John Achille. “They were a fun group to be around, and we had fun.” WRESTLING The Pioneer matmen earned three medals at the LancasterLebanon League Championships at Manheim Township High School on Feb. 13 and finished tied for fourth place with Garden Spot and Lancaster Catholic. “Fourth at leagues is a good finish considering the inconsistency in our lineup,” said head coach Brad Heeter. “We fought through a lot of adversity with multiple wrestlers and coaches affected by quarantine. The team has done a good job staying focused.” Leading that charge was gold medal winner Zac Shelley. The senior pinned his way to the heavyweight finals, decking both

Ryland Fittery, of Manheim Central in 1:41, and Pequea Valley’s Nate Miller in 3:51. The No. 2 seed then battled two-time champ Dustin Swanson of Garden Spot in the finals and prevailed with a 3-1 decision. “Zac wrestled a smart match, a great tournament,” said Heeter. “He avenged a section dual lost in the finals to take the championship.” Working his way to a bronze medal finish was Arik Harnish. Seeded second, Harnish pinned Ephrata’s Tristan Mellinger but dropped to the consolations with a sudden victory loss to Braedan Amole of Octorara in the semifinals. The senior regrouped and pinned Hempfield’s Clay Gainer in 1:50 and then held off Solanco’s Jackson Houghton for a 2-0 decision and the medal. “Arik had a tough bracket,” said Heeter. “The top three or four guys in his bracket could be a toss up every time they wrestle. Hard work in the room will earn victories in this scenario.” Wrestling at 172, junior Liam Feister came away with a fourthplace medal. Like his teammates, Feister advanced with a 5:55 fall over Donegal’s Joel Grillo but found himself on the opposite end of those results in the semifinals against McCaskey’s Andrew Voglebacher. Feister wrestled

back with a 3:51 fall over Pequea Valley’s Luke Brown but came out on the short end of a 3-1 decision against CV’s Nathaniel Kirchner in a battle for third. “Liam also had a good tournament and a great first match,” recalled Heeter. “He was down late in the match and earned that fall with only seconds left. “Both he and Zac are wrestling with limited mat time,” he continued. “I suspect they will only get better through the post-season tournaments.” Austin Reiff (113) and Parker Owens (189) also competed in the tournament but fell short in placing. GIRLS’ BASKETBALL The Lady Pioneers traveled out of Section Three play Friday, Feb. 12 and traveled to N. Lebanon (6-6 overall). The Cedars held the visitors to single digit scoring in all four quarters and finished on top, 37-26. “Northern Lebanon is always competitive up there,” said head coach Tony Fink, “and our shooting woes on the road continued. We are going to struggle when we don’t shoot the three-ball well, and then we had to foul late playing catchup. “Maggie Visniski was a bright spot with her defense and rebounding,” he added. Things were nip-and-tuck in

Both teams struggled at the offensive end in the third, but the Cedars again claimed the advantage, 6-3. They matched their second quarter output and held L-S to eight points down the stretch. The Pioneers hit just one three

pointer on the night and were 9of-15 from the free throw line. Northern Lebanon’s Ashlyn Messinger was a one-woman wrecking crew, tossing in a gamehigh 21 points. Emma Drouillard led the Pioneers with seven points and Maggie Visniski added six. Katie Ranck (4), Hailey Leaman (3), Jenna Daveler (3) and Kiersten Hostetter (3) also contributed as the Pioneers fell to 7-4 overall.

As the name suggests, flow painting involves acrylic paint mixed with Floetrol and applied to a canvas by pouring, rather than a brush. In the United States, Floetrol is a product of PPG Architectural Finishes and was created to improve the flow and leveling of water-based paints, primers, stains, and textured coatings. With flow painting, the resulting image is never assured. “It just does its own thing, and, most of the time, it creates something amazing to look at,” said Sparkle & Spill Fluid Art Creations owner Lacey Werner of East Lampeter Township. Werner discovered fluid art by attending a class at a painting party studio on St. Patrick’s Day in 2018. She and her boyfriend learned from two guest artists who demonstrated how to mix the paint and discussed various techniques. At home, Werner watched YouTube videos to learn more. “I really like the fluidity of the technique,” Werner commented. “It isn’t a style of art that requires detail and is required to look like something. I like the uniqueness and that I don’t have to really think about it once I pour the paint onto the canvas. The most challenging parts are getting the paint to be the right consistency, knowing how much paint I’ll need, and deciding what colors to use.” Pre-mixed paints can be purchased at craft stores, or artists, like Werner, can mix their own. Canvases can always be reused, but their numbers can soar if artists like the finished products. Werner began to experience that latter phenomenon, so she started looking for homes for her art. She also found another way to be creative with the paint itself. “I had so much dried leftover paint in the bottom of the containers I was using to pour over

Martin Meylin Middle School held its annual spelling bee virtually on Dec. 8. Teachers determined the top spellers through materials from the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Preston Schonour, eighth grade, won first place, with eighth-grader Anna Horner and seventh-grader Kayla Downing tying for second place and eighth-grader Saaketh Vemuri placing third. Julianna Fry, sixth grade, was the alternate. Between Jan. 20 and 24, Martin Meylin’s team took a written test to qualify for the WITF Central PA Spelling Bee. Julianna took the place of Anna, who had other obligations, for the qualifying test. WITF announced the 33 finalists, including Saaketh, on Jan. 26. Saaketh and the other finalists will advance to the Grand Championship Spelling Bee on Saturday, Feb. 27. The virtual event will be broadcast on WITF-TV and livestreamed at www.witf.org/watch.

The winners of Martin Meylin Middle School’s virtual spelling bee were (from left) Anna Horner, tied for second place; Preston Schonour, first place; Saaketh Vemuri, third place; Julianna Fry, alternate; and (not pictured) Kayla Downing, tied for second place.
