BY GEORGE DEIBEL
It’s all downhill for 100 LampeterStrasburg (L-S) High School students.
They are members of the school’s Ski and Snowboard Club.
The outdoors sports enthusiasts spent Jan. 15 through 17 in Jay Peak, Vt.
“When we arrived, we had our night in, and then we went snowboarding and skiing the next day,” junior Madelyn Lawler said. “Then I went over to the waterpark. That was fun. We were there for a couple hours. Then we went back. We slept and then skied again. We checked out early Sunday morning.”
Club members take several trips each winter. Between 40 and 50 attend each expedition. They have also been to Jack Frost Big Boulder Resort in the Poconos, Roundtop Mountain Resort in Lewisberry, and Seven Springs Mountain Resort near Pittsburgh.

Girls on the Run Accepting Registrations
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
Registration is underway for the spring season of the Girls on the Run Lancaster-Lebanon. Girls on the Run (GOTR) is an organization for girls in third through eighth grades. “We have our Girls on the Run curriculum, which is third through fifth grades, and we have our Heart and Sole curriculum, which is for girls in sixth through eighth grades,” said program director Kylie Homan. “Girls should register because we are a program that utilizes a research-based curriculum to support girls in understanding their emotions, fostering friendships, and expressing empathy.” Homan prefers that girls register by the start of the season on Monday, March 9. Sign-ups will close on Saturday, March 14. Go to www.gotrlancasterlebanon.org to sign up or for additional information.

It’s said that everybody loves a parade.
Brian Barr cherishes the Strasburg Memorial Day Parade as much as anyone. He has served as the chairperson for more than 15 years and is now seeking his successor.
“I retired, and my daughter (Andrea) lives overseas, so we want to be able to go spend time with our daughter over in Scotland,” Barr said. “My wife, Mary, said to me, ‘This is a good time for you to look at backing out a little bit.’ Not that I’ll ever fully leave. I’ll always be there to help. I’ll be more

There is a standard fee to participate in GOTR, but there is some flexibility. “We emphasize families pay what they can given their current circumstances,” said Homan. “We want to make sure that our program is accessible to girls and that there’s no barriers for anybody to participate. There are no forms, no applications to fill out. Their selection of financial assistance is just part of the registration process, and they have the opportunity to select their payment amount.”
The fee includes the cost of training coaches, the curriculum for Girls on the Run International, and all of the lesson materials that are provided to the coaches. Girls receive a take-home journal with

Pioneers’ Morgan Dombach draws a foul on Garden Spot’s Katie Hoffman while going up for the shot during a 45-27 win on Thursday, February 5.
On Friday, February 6, Pioneer senior Madelyne Juba brought home fifth place medal in both the 200 and 500 freestyle during the L-L Swimming Championships held at Manheim Township.

“I think it brings some of the school together,” said junior Carter Peters, who is the club treasurer. “There are so many people that I met on the trips that I would have never met, and I feel like it connects seniors to freshmen, sophomores to juniors. Everyone gets to be with people they wouldn’t normally talk to because of something they share as a common interest.”
Junior Payton Laub added, “I just love that everyone from our school can go together and go on these trips together, so I can go with my friends and go to places that are a little bit farther than I would normally go to.”
Madelyn, who enjoys snowboarding, said she decided to become involved with the club because of the influence of family members. “My brothers did it, and they always loved it, and they would take me on trips when I was little,” she said. “I thought, ‘Oh, there’s a
Trivia Event Set
The Moravian Center of Lancaster will present a trivia contest on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 4 to 6 p.m. on the second floor of 227 N. Queen St., Lancaster. Featured trivia questions will be about music and artists from the ’50s through the ’80s.
The event is free, with prizes awarded to the first-, second-, and third-place winners. Doors will open at 3 p.m. with snacks available for sale.

club; that’s amazing.’ All my friends were joining, so I thought, ‘Let’s do it.’”
She has not been disappointed. “I think it is a great time, especially when we go out on the mountains,” Madelyn said. “We normally stay in groups two to three, but a lot of times we go out in like big groups and have such a fun time going down the mountain and being able to see everyone do their own little tricks.”
Like many of the students, senior Jack Kirchner, the Ski and Snowboard Club president, did not know the school had this kind of group prior to joining.
Jack said some of his favorite parts of the trips are the bus rides, including the 10-hour excursion to Vermont. “They’re fun,” he said. “On the way there, everyone’s excited and in a good mood. And on the way back, everyone is still in a good mood. There’s never fighting on the bus or anything like that. Even though we had a

long bus ride in Vermont, everybody had a good time interacting and having fun.”
Other people on the mountains are surprised to come across a school club. “A lot of times, you meet people on the lift, and you start talking to them, and then you say that we’re from Pennsylvania, and this is our school trip,” Payton said. “They say how amazing it is that we get to come on these trips as a school. And it’s just a really fun talking to people and learning where they’re from and then getting to say we came up as a school.”
The Ski and Snowboard Club meets occasionally through the school year to plan trips and discuss fundraising projects.
“I like that it gets students outside and active, and they socialize with each other,” said Lindsay Shehan, who is a club adviser along with Justin Keefer and Christy McCanna. “It definitely teaches a lot of independence. It is a safe way for kids to take risks.

… In terms of fun activities for kids, you can see how excited they get to try something new. I really love that our club is a great place for beginners if they’ve never had the opportunity to ski or snowboard. We help make that happen. And for kids that have already grown up skiing and snowboarding, it’s just a chance to be independent and go off with their friends, but in a structured environment at the same time.”

activities to do and also get an official GOTR T-shirt and a season gift. The 5K registration and the medal they receive at the 5K are also included in the price.
“The name is Girls on the Run, but it’s about so much more,” said Jessica Wilson, who is the program and 5K manager. “It’s really about encouraging girls to move forward at whatever their pace may be. We have girls that run. We have girls that walk. We have girls that skip. We have girls that roll in their wheelchairs at practices. We just encourage all of those movements and just encourage them to keep moving forward.”

spring season, we will need approximately 300 to 350 volunteer coaches to support the teams across Lancaster and Lebanon (counties),” said Homan, adding that there are coaching opportunities for males, females, and high school-age girls.

Previous participants might notice a slight change in the program. “We are super excited this spring will be the first season in which we’re starting the use of a new curriculum, which has been rolled out from Girls on the Run International, and it is called Hello Bold Heart,” said Homan. “It is all about giving girls the opportunity to discover their heart power and developing the confidence to boldly share what is in their heart and help others use their voice too.”
Homan added, “The curriculum does a really great job of integrating the physical movement with the learning components. It’s a lot of tandem learning when it comes to the physical activity. The girls don’t always realize that they’re running and they’re doing the physical activity because they’re doing so much learning along with it.”
GOTR is seeking coaches who will operate chapters out of schools. “For the
“We encourage anybody to come out to be a coach,” Homan said. “We have coaches in their 70s, and you don’t need to be a runner. You don’t need to have coaching experience. We have a lot of coaches that come in who are teachers, but we have coaches that are just community members looking for a place to give back and to support the community in this way.”
GOTR prepares the coaches. “All of our coaches receive a very structured coach training experience that gives them the foundation and the resources to be able to coach successfully for throughout the season,” said Homan. “And then coaches are always given support throughout the season from our council.”

Anyone interested in volunteering can visit the website or email Wilson at jwilson@gotrlancaster.org or Homan at khoman@gotr lancaster.org.
The goal is to have a GOTR program in every school district in Lancaster and Lebanon counties. “We’re working towards that,” said Homan.
The spring season will conclude with a 5K that will begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 16. It will be held at for the first time at Greenfield, 1581 William Penn Way, Lancaster. The event is open to the public. It is designed as a fun run and is not chiptimed. “We need hundreds of volunteers in order for the 5K to be a safe and successful day,” said Homan.
At the end of the season, the girls engage in a community impact project, which is their opportunity to give back to the community that is important to them.
“The new curriculums that we’ve been using are really emphasizing that a small act can make a big impact,” said Homan. “It gets the girls to think on a smaller scale about how they can really do something that’s important, but it doesn’t have to be grandiose.”

than happy to help set up for the service and set up the parade.”
He noted that the Sertoma Club began organizing the parade in the early 2000s, and Barr eventually took over from Don Bachman.
“I took a bigger and bigger role in it and eventually ended up being the chairman of the parade,” he said. “It’s been a passion for me. We’re trying to find somebody I can train over the next year and ... into next year, so that they can get a good feel for what we do. I am so concerned that the parade continues. That’s why we’re talking about the idea of doing an internship or apprenticeship for somebody to take over.”
Anyone interested in learning the ropes can email Barr at capt30th@ gmail.com.
“I like to say it’s an old-fashioned hometown parade,” said Barr. “It’s not glitzy. It’s not one of those big productions. It’s just folks coming out and paying honor to those men that gave the last full measure.”
The annual parade starts promptly at 9 a.m. on the national Memorial Day holiday, with a service at the Strasburg Cemetery beginning at 11 a.m. This year’s event will be held Monday, May 25.
“We get a permit to shut down Route 741 at 9 o’clock, and then we have two hours to get the parade over and done,” Barr said. “That’s why it’s absolutely imperative that we step off at 9 o’clock. It sounds daunting, but at this point, we have so many people who are dedicated to helping with it also. I have a crew that helps set the parade up.”
Once the festivities are over, Barr immediately begins preparing for the following year. “I like to tell people I start planning the (next) parade the day after the parade,” he said. While the role is rewarding, it does have its challenges. “Finding somebody to be your keynote speaker is one of the hardest things to do,” Barr said. Past keynote speakers have included Rep. Lloyd Smucker, a Gold Star mother and a local man
who attended the United States Military Academy and is chief of thoracic surgery at Walter Reed Army Medical Center.
The parade chairperson also arranges to have a grand marshal. “I like to find somebody who was a veteran and is important in town and has done a lot for the town but maybe (is) not recognized for it,” said Barr.
Barr also reaches out to local organizations that have participated in the past. “We have to make sure we contact the color guard people that they’re going to be there, making sure you contact the marching bands,” he said. “You contact the church groups. There’s a lot of contacting people and then taking all that and taking the skeleton we have for a lineup for the parade and filling in new people. You just keep your ears open to find people who might want to be involved who’ve never been involved. You just try to stay aware and respond to people when they reach
out to you.”
Sometimes people make a spur-of-the-moment decision to take part. “We’re very, very laid back,” said Barr. “It’s not like you have to fill out a form and you are given a number and that’s it, because a lot of stuff comes in that day. They come into the lineup area, the marshaling area, and they want to be able to be in the parade. We slip you in the parade.”
Barr stated that the parade is especially meaningful to him since he had uncles who served in World War II, a father who served in Korea, and brothers in the Marines. Now he’s ready to pass the torch.
“It’s a lot of correlating, and then the biggest thing is being there on that Monday morning and making sure everything’s ready to roll,” Barr said. “You make sure your guys who are in charge of the parade lineup have them lined up, and we’re ready to step out on the (Route) 741 at 9.”
