Auction Will Raise Funds for Mission Trip to Italy

The First Presbyterian Church, located at 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg, will hold a Mission Italy Auction on Saturday, Feb. 21.

Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The auction will begin at 6:15 p.m.

The auction is a fundraiser for a mission trip to Italy this summer.

Auctioneer Don Welk Sr. will put 106 items up for bid, including a signed Kareem Abdul-Jabbar basketball that’s authenticated; a painting by local artist Fred Rodger; a signed baseball bat and glove from county native Travis Jankowski; a signed game jersey from former Philadelphia Flyers star Simon Gagne; a week in the

Poconos; a week in Bethany Beach, Del.; four Holstein heifers; and gift certificates to local businesses.

Every student going on the mission trip is required to donate a high-end product for the auction.

United Disabilities Services (UDS) will hold a pick-your-ownprize bingo event on Saturday, March 14, at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster.

Doors will open at 11:30 a.m.; the first game will begin at 1 p.m.

There is a discount on tickets purchased in advance, and tickets will also be available at the door if not sold out.The fee includes 20 games of regular bingo, and there will also be four special games with cash prizes. Players must be 18 years old or older to claim a prize.

“If people are interested in getting a ticket, I would strongly suggest getting their ticket beforehand, because we sell out every year,” said Jen King, a member of the UDS Service Dogs Ambassador Team.

Church members have also made contributions. The complete list of items can be viewed by going to www.straspres.org.

“We have quite a few high-money items, and so we’re excited for that,”

It’s already time for the Class of 2039 to sign up for classes.

The Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District is encouraging parents of children who turn 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2026, to register early for kindergarten classes that will begin in the fall. To register, go to www.l-s pioneers.org/k-reg.

Kindergarten registration must be completed by Monday, March 2, to sign up for School Age Child Care (SACC). All who register before Wednesday, April 1, will be entered to win a gift card from Giant.

The school district also provides a SACC Wrap program. “Because we have half-day kindergarten, they can use School Age Child Care to wrap around into the rest of the day so they can come in the morning for SACC, then go to kindergarten in the afternoon, or vice versa,” said Christi Henry, who is the L-S principal for kindergarten through second grade.

The school district requests that school district residents who do not wish to enroll their children in kindergarten email Tanya Groff of the student accounting office at tanya_groff@l-spioneers.org.

The registration period does not close. “Registration is always available to families. When they’re ready, they can register for kindergarten,” Henry said. Registering early enables families to participate in school events such as Kickoff to Kindergarten and the Kindergarten Expo.

pastor Bob Bronkema said. “What we really are looking for the most is people who will come in and bid on them.”

Pulled pork, macaroni and cheese, coleslaw, baked goods made by students, and chips will be sold.

Twenty youths and 11 adults from across the area will travel to Portici, Italy, from Sunday, June 28, through Wednesday, July 8.

First Presbyterian Church sends groups on two mission trips a year, one for middle-schoolers and another for high-schoolers. A trip to Italy occurs every four years.

Pastor Bronkema grew up in Rome. “I served in Italy at an orphanage, and so since 2000, we’ve been sending groups to Italy,” he said. “This is the fourth group that we’ve sent from

First Presbyterian Church. And (the auction) is the one and only fundraiser, so we have to make that work.”

Kristin Kondratowski helps organize the auction and mission trips. “We’ll be working in a public elementary school, and we’ll be doing an English immersion program for the students for a week,” she said.

Bronkema added, “Here in the United States, we call it vacation Bible school, but because it’s in a public school in Italy, we’re calling it an English immersion program.”

The pastor said Portici is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. “It’s very, very poor,” he said. “It’s right outside of Naples. It’s a very, very poor region and district. … My wife (Stacy) and I served there for four years at an orphanage. There’s a lot of opportunity for our kids to be able to bring some hope but also to learn from them as well.”

The visit will not be all work and no play. “They’ll have vacation Bible school in the morning, and then every day after that vacation Bible school, the kids will be able to go and see a pretty significant cultural place like Pompei and Vesuvius, the Amalfi Coast,” said Bronkema. “Then at the end of the trip, after the five-day vacation Bible school, we’ll go to Rome.”

Jackson Allison, a junior at Lampeter-Strasburg High School, will be making his fifth mission expedition. He has also twice journeyed to Florida and West Virginia.

“The products that are being sold (at the auction) are pretty neat, cool experiences,” Jackson said. “(The auction) will support us going to Italy and teaching their kids more about the Gospel.”

Abi May, a senior homeschool student from Schaefferstown, has made mission trips the last two years, one to Florida and one to West Virginia.

The 1719 Museum is seeking volunteers to guide tours of the Herr House and Lancaster Longhouse in the spring, summer, and fall of 2026. The museum will offer tour guide trainings on Saturday, Feb. 21, from 9 a.m. to noon and Fridays, March 6 and 20, from 6 to 8 p.m. The sessions will meet in the Mennonite Life Community Room at 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, and the Feb. 21 session will also require driving to the 1719

Volunteers should plan to attend all three training sessions and be available for at least one tour date per month during the museum’s open season. Sessions will educate volunteers on topics relevant to leading tours at the 1719 Museum, including Lancaster County’s Indigenous history, European Mennonite migration to the area, and techniques for guiding large groups

“I’m looking forward to getting to know the kids and interacting with them,” said Abi. “I work with kids a lot, so I’m super excited to talk to kids that aren’t from the United States and get to know their culture and just to

“It helps us get to know the kids,” said Henry. “It helps us offer opportunities for the kids and families to get into the school for open houses and visitations. We know that the more chances the kids have to get into the school, the smoother their transition will be. ... The sooner they connect with us, the more quickly we can build a relationship and help them settle into the school.”

Henry is confident parents won’t be disappointed by the Early Childhood Center (ECC), which opened in August of 2024. “The ECC is an amazing place,” she said. “The whole building is designed for early childhood, the size of things, the way everything is laid out and designed, the playground. The physical space is truly designed for early childhood learning and growth. Our programming is amazing.

We have wonderful teachers. We have school-wide Title I. We have everything children and families could need to have a successful year.”

This is Henry’s 24th year working in public education and first as a principal. She worked in the Downingtown Area School District and Eastern Lancaster County School District before coming to L-S 12 years ago. At Hans Herr Elementary School, Henry taught fifth grade and then served as a program specialist for reading.

“It’s been amazing just getting to know everyone, getting to know the kids, and building relationships with staff, students, and families,” said Henry. “It’s been really amazing. We have a wonderful team here who truly believes in doing what’s best for kids, and it’s an honor and a true pleasure to work with everyone here.”

Local businesses make the fundraiser possible. “We are thankful for the generosity of Primitives by Kathy,” said King. “They donated $500 worth of products for us to go shopping and create baskets.”

Other prizes include Dutch Wonderland tickets

and gift cards from Basset & Lab, Fireside Tavern, and Twisted Bine Beer Company. “Without the help of the local businesses that support this, we would not be able to put this program together,” King said. “We will have everything from house goods to dog items to experiences. Urban Air is also donating tickets for go-karting.”

There will also be food for sale with the menu featuring hot dogs, pulled pork sandwiches, barbecue, chips, baked goods, and drinks such as soda and iced tea.

“It’s our second-largest fundraiser that we hold each year,” said King. “Other than just the prizes, we’ll also have a 50/50, and we have door prizes as well. But even if you don’t win anything, it’s just knowing that you’re part of something bigger. The ripple effect of a wagging tail goes very, very far in this program.”

The money generated goes directly to the service dogs program. “UDS has 14 different programs under our umbrella,” said King. “This fundraiser is specifically for service dogs. That will allow us to continue with the training, paying for food, vet care. It takes $38,000 to put one dog through our training program, so events like this really help to offset that expense for our clients.”

Justin Snyder will be the guest bingo caller. “Justin is a veteran, so it’s perfect for us because we train some of our dogs for veterans with

PTSD,” King said.

King noted that UDS provides valuable services. “We are enhancing the lives of those living in our communities, within a threehour radius of Lancaster, who have mobility disabilities and for children with autism,” she said. “We’re also placing facility dogs in schools and counseling centers and retirement communities as well.”

A story from a retirement community is evidence of UDS’ success.

“One of our dogs, Casey, is out at Garden Spot Village, and they call him their community dog, because he really has become part of the community for the residents out there,” said King. “Within the first three months of him being a working dog out there, their reports of outbursts dropped over 30%. So instead of giving them a medication to help them to relax, they would bring in Casey. It’s a holistic approach.”
