Bring On The Bling! he creator of the over-the-top gowns on TLC’s “My Big Fat American Gypsy Wedding” will be the guest speaker at the next monthly meeting of the Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN). Couture designer Sondra Celli will join the group via Zoom at 7 p.m. on Monday, Feb. 22. Members of the public are invited to attend and may email lancastersews@gmail.com for details. Celli started out in children’s wear after graduating from New York’s Fashion Institute of Technology and working in fashion houses around the globe. The clothing was heavily embellished with ribbons, beads, and miniature toys such as racecars, checkers, and tiny dolls and was sold at Saks, Neiman Marcus, and other department stores across the country. “It was a colorful, textural, whimsical, and three-dimensional line,” Celli said. “My collection stood out,

and that’s how the Gypsies found me. They tracked me down, and I’ve been designing for them ever since, and that was over 40 years ago.” Celli opened the Sondra Celli Company in Waltham, Mass., in 1981 and specialized in what she calls “uncommon crystal couture.” She does all the patternwork herself and cuts all the pieces for every design. Staff members sew the garments together before other workers, called “blingettes,” add the surface embellishments. “The stones are put on one-byone by hand,” Celli explained. “It’s a labor-intensive job, but the results are outstanding, eyecatching designs. As I like to say, ‘It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that bling.’” Celli published a book with Atglen-based Schiffer Publishing in 2019. “BLING! I interviewed for a part-time job as a proofreader a few hours before my wedding rehearsal on Dec. 28, 2006. When I received the offer to join Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. as a full-time feature writer and photographer, I was buying last-minute decorating supplies in a discount store. I was so excited to have my first salaried professional job that I forgot to introduce the members of the bridal party to each other. A program dedicated to helping individuals in transition has made its own move. The New Choices Career Development Program, most recently sponsored by the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), will return to its founding organization, the YWCA Lancaster. New Choices was created in 1985 to help individuals develop essential job-seeking and work skills, and classes were held at the YWCA, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, for many years. Later, the program’s headquarters was moved to the PA CareerLink of Lancaster County
offices. Being back at the YWCA will help new and existing clients access services. “The program fits a particular niche within the YWCA’s program offerings to support economic independence and opportunity. We have lots of parents who use our child care services who are working but are low income and are looking for an opportunity and support to move forward in a career,” said YWCA Lancaster CEO Stacie Blake. “We expect New Choices will have many inquiries from folks getting back on their feet as well as from employers who want to fill critical roles quickly.”

The first program, on Jan. 25, featured sewing with velvet, a persnickety fabric that can pose difficulties for even experienced sewists. Celli has been asked to speak about challenges she encounters in her work, which include managing dozens of yards of fabric in a single gown and creating the attendant accessories, such as custom angel wings and blingedout shoes. “For (the television show) we need to move equipment and people from the work room into the main show room and spread out on mul-

I have often had to put anywhere from three to six blingettes on one dress in order to get it done.” 2020 was also a challenge for the Sondra Celli Company. Celli noted that her biggest problem was getting supplies from her New York vendors because the state had shut down. She embraced the opportunity to reorganize and restock. “Business was down but, thank goodness, consistent,” Celli commented. “We spent a lot of time using up inventory to create masks for front line workers, donat-
ing hundreds of masks to area hospitals, veterans, and senior citizens.” LASN president Rachel Siegel noted that the silver lining of meeting virtually is that the group can more easily host guest speakers from outside the area. “Even if we don’t expect to ever create or wear something as elaborate as Sondra’s creations, I am sure that we will all learn something that we can put into use in our own sewing, whether it is a handy tool, the name of a supplier, or a technique that cleverly solves an issue,” Siegel said. That excitement continued on my first day, Jan. 8, 2007, as my predecessor, Ethan Riley, showed me the ropes … and then turned to anxiety when I was solely in charge of finding articles in a news cycle that never stopped. Eventually, however, I settled into the role of “Newspaper Lady,” one that I have been privileged to hold for 14 years. My clients have made all the difference. You invited me into your homes and into your hearts. I have so many fond memories: -Robah Hess teaching me to be careful with my instructions during photoshoots by popping out his dentures when I asked him to show me his teeth when he smiled. -Competing in the invitational milking contest at the Solanco Fair. -Being teased by Bethesda United Methodist Church members the first time I experimented with purple hair. -Standing in a pasture at Noble Hill Horse Rescue as horses grazed around us and then one tried to eat my notepad. -Judging a cooking class contest at Penn Manor High School. And there are the not-so-

fond memories: -The death of Lancaster County Master Gardener Tom Beck in 2015. This hit me hard because we had worked on numerous stories together. I treasure the giant allium that blooms outside my front door every spring; it was the party favor from the Master Gardener dinner where Tom and his wife, Betty, hosted me a few months before his passing. -The time I combined the names of two educators and misnamed Martin Meylin Middle School principal Jamie Raum in print. -The day I interviewed a group of individuals who had planted a new church - and
then went to my next appointment and realized I was at the church they had left. I have always been grateful that I have not had to cover hard news. I have witnessed your joys and celebrations, your Eagle Scout achievements and fair queen coronations. There have been stories rooted in sorrows as well: 9/11 stair climbs and family members raising money for Relay For Life in memory of loved ones who died of cancer. I have been privy to your frustrations and, at times, anger, but it has been a blessing to reassure you that “we publish only good news, so this is off the record.” Like it was for so many people, 2020 was a difficult year for me. As the year dragged on, I realized the time had come for me to try something different, to grow in a new direction. My last day as the Newspaper Lady was Feb. 5. I have moved on, but I have not moved away. Once it is safe to linger in person again, I will be eager to hear your updates, but not for publication. LCCTC Dental Assistant Program instructor Rachel Sprecher noted that attending New Choices classes at the YWCA ultimately led to her current position. “I didn’t think that I was capable of much, and I didn’t think that there was much point in trying,” Sprecher commented. “The program helped build self-confidence, which was a huge part of getting me where I am today.” New Choices classes are offered free of charge to individuals over the age of 18 who have earned at least a GED or high school diploma and are single parents, first-time pregnant women, people experiencing recent job loss, or displaced homemakers. Students who complete the course are eligible for scholarship funds for short-term education, and
they may receive continued guidance from New Choices staff members. Enrollment is open for the next series of classes. Individuals may choose to attend one week, either in the morning or the afternoon. Blessings of Hope has announced a Church Spirit Contest. The fundraiser will support the organization’s mission of partnering with ministries that provide food outreaches to their local communities in Pennsylvania and beyond. This year, Blessings of Hope has experienced an increased demand for its services of over 500%, thereby requiring it to accelerate its expansion plans. The contest will continue through Wednesday, March 31, and has a goal of raising $500,000. Any church or ministry that signs up to become a fundraiser through the peerto-peer fundraiser campaign and that raises at least $250
will be placed into a drawing. One winner will be randomly selected to have 100 Hands of Hope food boxes delivered anywhere in the 48 contiguous U.S. states. All organizations that participate and raise at least $250 will be invited to tour Blessings of Hope’s facility in a private Church Spirit Contest open house. Grand prizes will go to the two churches with the most donations at the end of the contest. The winner of the first-place Grand Prize will receive 1,000 Hands of Hope boxes of food. Aaron Fisher, founder of Blessings of Hope, will attend and assist with the distribution of the food at the winner’s event.

The Pioneers got a game-high 16 points from Emma Drouillard and outscored Solanco in all four quarters to pull out a 40-30 victory at home January 28. Paige Phillips paced the visitors with eight points as the two-time defending champ Solanco slipped to 2-6 overall. The win leaves L-S on top of the Section Three standings at 5-1.

A Drouillard trey was sandwiched around four points by Maggie Visniski, pushing the lead to 27-13. “We opened up that lead and then lost their best shooter twice,” recalled head coach Tony Fink. “We missed some inside shots and we missed eight free throws, but Jada Willard gave us some energy in the second quarter and Emma and Jenna hit some big threes to open up the game. “A win is a win in this difficult year,” he added. Phillips knocked down a pair of treys after that, giving Solanco some life and cutting the lead to 30-22 with two minutes left in the frame. They got to within six, 36-30, but the Pioneers canned 4-of-6 free throws in the final 35 seconds to clinch the win. “We did outrebound them, (34-22) but we did not capitalize on our second chance points,” said Solanco head coach Chad McDowell. SWIMMING The Lady Pioneer swimmers took first and second in every single event on Thursday, January 28 and cruised to a 137-26 win over visiting Manheim Central. The win caps a 5-1 season for the girls. Zara Paisley (50 and 100 free) and Elizabeth Horner (100 backstroke and 100 butterfly) each won two individual events and swam on two of the three winning relays. Paisley anchored the 200 medley relay with Kara Scranton, Abigail Wolff and Ashley Prouse while Horner anchored the 200 free relay with Bre Fluhr, Emma Kury and Ellie Parido. They both swam the 400 free relay with Abby Welchans and Kara Scranton chipping in. “We changed our lineup in this one to put other key individuals in the lineup,” said head coach Kylie Turner. “Both teams continued to have PR times in almost all events, bettering our seeds for the league meet (Feb. 5-6).” Clair Eckert (200 free), Welchans (500 free), Emma Kury (100 breaststroke) and Scranton (200 IM) also contributed first place efforts. The boys’ team finished their season at 4-2 after winning 10of-11 events against the Barons, in their last regular meet of the season, for a 95-55 victory. “Last year the boys only beat Manheim by one point,” recalled Turner. “This year we beat them by 40. Eberly capped the two-win performers with top times in the 100 back and 200 free. “The 200 free relay team almost got the school record,” Turner noted. “They missed by 1.5 seconds. “Top times came from Nathan Eberly, Christian Rota, Kara Scranton, Ashley Prouse, Ryan Smecker, Bre Fluhr, Abby Welchans and Kyle Spaulding.” Smecker picked up a win in the 200 IM and Christian Rota was first in the 100 butterfly. BOWLING After picking up a 5-2 win over Elco at Rocky Springs, the Pioneer bowlers suffered a tough 4-3 loss to that same team just three days later, this time at Berks Lanes on Thursday, January 28. In the 5-2 win, L-S lost the first game but came back to take games two and three and total pins. Nick Bukowski (484 series) and Ethan Snyder (434), both freshmen, led the way. High game of the match was a 174 by Bukowski in game three. “That second match, at Berks, was close the whole way,” said first year head coach John Achille. “Although they won two of the three games, we did win total pins. All games came down to the last two frames. They made spares and we did not. “Ethan and Nick have been the most consistent through seven matches,” Achille continued. “Sawyer Lancaster, one of our two seniors, has been a solid number three guy and Katie Pope, another freshman, improves each outing.” Other members of the team include senior Evan Mize, junior Jacob Haas, and freshman Peter
Mecouch. “We’re young and inexperienced but the kids are improving and are great and fun to work with,” Achille said. “The seniors have been awesome leaders. At this point, it looks like Ethan, with a 521 series average and a 174-game average, will qualify for L-L Singles (top 50 qualify).”
BOYS’ BASKETBALL Five players contributed to the scoring total in Quarryville, January 28 and three of them hit double figures. Led by Isaiah Parido and Ty Burton, both with 18 points, and Berkley Wagner, with a season-high 11 the Pioneers swept the series against Solanco with a 55-40 win. They are currently 5-1 in Section Three and 6-1 overall. “Burton was our focus as he had 26 against us the first time,”
noted Solanco head coach Dave Long. “We held him to six in the first half but then Parido stepped up.” This was a little closer than the final indicated. The Pioneers, with six points from Luka Vranich, held a slim 10-8 at the end of the first quarter. Then Parido got hot from downtown, canning three triples and, and Wagner tossed in six points, sparking L-S to a 28-22 lead at the break. Halftime did not slow Parido who knocked down another three treys and the visitors held a 14-11 advantage in the quarter. L-S, who collected nine threes on the night, did the most damage down the stretch. Burton, a freshman, tallied 11 of his 18 points, and 11 of Lampeter’s 13. They held Solanco to seven to wrap up the win.

The United Way of Lancaster County’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) Program is now scheduling appointments for tax preparation. The Lancaster VITA is one of more than 12,000 VITA programs across the country that help people file their taxes every year free of charge. The service is available to anyone who makes $62,000 or less and lives in Lancaster County. The volunteer tax preparers at VITA go through at least 40 hours of tax law training and are certified by the IRS. Customers get professional service by trained volunteers who are equipped to identify tax refund opportunities for customers. In response to the pandemic, VITA has modified the way it delivers services this year to keep both clients and volunteers safe. VITA now offers a totally contactless, virtual option through a partnership with Get Your Refund. Get Your Refund allows clients to securely upload their tax information and documents. They will receive a call from an IRS-certified tax preparer who will prepare the tax return, review it with them, and send a secure email file with the completed return. There will also be Free File options and limited drop-off appointments at several locations throughout Lancaster County. Virtual and drop-off sites began operating on Jan. 25 to ensure that clients receive their refunds as quickly as possible. To schedule a drop-off appointment at one of VITA’s tax preparation sites around Lancaster County, readers may call the United Way’s 211 referral service. Tax payers can schedule appointments and obtain information about VITA locations, eligibility requirements, and other details by visiting www.freetaxprep lancaster.org. When the most recent shutdown was announced at the end of 2020, restaurant coowner Mariella Volker turned to Facebook. Inspired by stories from college friends who now live in western Pennsylvania and Ohio, Volker created the “Lancaster County Take Out” Facebook group. “I just started it on a whim to see if this could be a way to help local businesses with takeout,” she explained. Volker was very clear from the group’s beginning that she did not want it to become a place where members denigrated anyone for staying open. Rather, the focus was on highlighting those who were in compliance with the orders. “I was looking for a way to give a leg up and provide community support for restaurants that were staying closed and providing takeout,” she said. Word of the group spread, and membership climbed. Two weeks into the new year, membership had surpassed 8,500 people, and posting was rapid. The group has become a crowdsourcer’s dream, with pictures of takeout orders galore, along with requests for recommendations based on food preferences or geography. “I didn’t think it would become what it has,” Volker said. “I’m thrilled so many places have found support.” In an informal poll, nearly 300 people said they have tried new restaurants as a result of the group, and about as many said they have a greater appreciation for their community. Almost 200 people said they have purchased more takeout than usual.
“This group led me to trying Gracie’s (on West Main in Leola) for the first time. In the last month we have gotten takeout at least five times, ordered two DIY breakfasts, and got our Christmas dinner there. It is our new favorite,” said Toni Hershey. “I have also really enjoyed sharing places we love with the group and making sure longtime favorites - like Sushi One keep getting business.” “Thanks to this site, I’ve discovered a lot of new favorite restaurants that I have been driving by for years - Gracie’s and Three Sisters Park (in Ephrata) to name two,” Deb Gifford commented. “I just love how this has been such a positive group to work together and help local businesses and their employees,” Christine Cipoletti said. “I have tried new restaurants and some that I hadn’t known about. This is such a useful Facebook page.” Business owners have commented to Volker that the group has made a positive impact on their businesses, especially for caterers who have been able to transition from preparing food for events to food for families. Although the orders now state that restaurants may partially open for indoor dining, Volker believes that takeout will be a major part of their business plans. “The landscape of the restaurant industry has changed, permanently,” she suggested. “Takeout’s not going anywhere. People are used to eating in the comfort of their homes now.” “Lancaster County Take Out” is a public group, and new members are always welcome.

Partners for Places has awarded the City of Lancaster with a $75,000 grant to fund the 2022 comprehensive plan. The High Foundation provided $75,000 in matching funding, giving the city a total of $150,000 for the community engagement process for the comprehensive plan. The comprehensive plan is meant to reflect a community consensus about the direction for future growth and community development in Lancaster over the next 20 years. The plan will contain policies around zoning, economic development, housing, transportation, the environment, and other factors that impact quality of life in Lancaster city. Funding from Partners for Places will help ensure the plan is grounded in the community’s values and priorities through a planning process that involves the city’s diverse communities, especially underserved communities. The grant will support expanding access to all printed and spoken communica-
