New Year, New Director BY COURTNEY MENGEL
With a new year come new goals, plans, and sometimes even opportunities. This statement has proved true for Wayne Breneman II, the new director of the Southern End Community Association (SECA). Wayne grew up in Lancaster County, graduated from Lampeter-Strasburg High School, received his Master of Education in sport management from Millersville University, and currently resides in West Lampeter Township with his wife, Taryn. He remembers visiting Solanco quite often during his time as a high school student because many of his friends lived there, and when he discovered that the position of director of SECA had become vacant, he decided to apply. If you live in the Solanco area, then you are probably familiar with SECA, 299 Park Ave., Quarryville. SECA’s mission is to create recreational opportunities for residents of the Southern End by

ith its beautiful cities, rich culture, incredible history, fascinating museums, and spectacular food, Italy is one of the most visited countries in the world. After spending the first eight years of his life in Rome and serving as a chaplain at the Casa Materna orphanage in Naples for about four years after completing seminary, Robert “Bob” Bronkema realized how valuable it is to visit the country. congregation of the First Presbyterian Church of Strasburg will host a benefit auction on Saturday, Feb. 19, in the church’s fellowship hall, 101 S. Decatur St., Strasburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and the auction will begin at 6:15 p.m., with Don Welk Sr. serving as the auctioneer. “I feel like the auction will be a big community moment because everyone is invited to attend, even those who don’t go to church here,” stated Alicia Eltman, Gap resident and social worker at the church. Eltman will serve as a chaperone on the mission trip. See Benefit Auction pg 4

Wayne knew about SECA because he had participated in several events hosted by the association, and he knew he wanted to apply for the job because he was interested in a local community recreation position. Before joining SECA, Wayne worked for the Strasburg Borough in the public works department as a public works operator, and prior to that, he was employed by the LampeterStrasburg Recreation Commission, which later merged with the Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA. “I’m interested in being part of a community association that offers numerous events and programs that are aiming to improve the mental and physical wellbeing of the community,” said Wayne. “I see the Southern End as a tightknit, caring community. There are numerous very hard-working individuals
and small businesses who work together to make the Southern End go ’round.” As director of SECA, Wayne hopes to maintain current events and programs in addition to introducing some “learn to play” sports clinics, outdoor classes, and a variety of workshops. Wayne noted that he wants to work with the community to improve some of the facilities on-site and ensure SECA is reaching out to and offering something for people of all ages. “I see SECA as an asset to the community,” explained Wayne. “Between the pool, pond, open space, facilities, and building, it seems like something is always going on. It’s a place where people can come and enjoy themselves, whether it’s participating in a program, utilizing our facilities, or simply enjoying the outdoors while walking around the grounds.” SECA has some events
planned for the spring, including a St. Patrick’s Day Money Party on Saturday, March 12, and an adult Easter egg hunt on Saturday, April 16. The Youth Flag Football league will start in March, and pool passes are currently on sale for the upcoming season. According to the American Cancer Society, breast cancer is one of the most common cancers in women. However, through research, treatments, surgeries, and determination, there are currently more than 3.8 million breast cancer survivors living in the U.S. Located at 143 Oakridge Drive, Mountville, Help The Fight is a nonprofit organization that supports individuals living with breast cancer. After her mother died from the disease and sister was diagnosed with it, Lynda Charles founded Help The Fight with her husband in 2009. What started as a bake sale has grown exponentially; Help The Fight has now raised over $800,000 to help breast cancer patients buy groceries and tires, pay rent and mortgages, and cover day care fees and medical bills. As a nonprofit, Help The Fight can help anyone regardless of where they live, but Lancaster County and surrounding counties are its prime focus. On Sunday, March 6, Help The Fight will host its third annual designer bag bingo
event, which will feature brands such as Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Kate Spade, Coach, and Dooney & Bourke. Last year’s fundraiser was virtual due to COVID-19, but the upcoming cash-only event will be held in person at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Doors will open at noon, and bingo will begin at 1:30 p.m. Attendees can play 20 games of bingo, with the opportunity to win a designer bag each round. There will also be four specials and one super special. If a bingo round has more than one winner, a tiebreaker will be played. “To support Help The Fight is to help the entire community,” said Charles. “ We’re a blast. It’s a real fun event. We packed the house the first year and it was awesome. Hopefully we will meet some new people and have some new faces.” Food and beverages will be available for purchase at the event, and attendees can participate in giveaways of items donated to the organization. Giant’s “Feeding School Kids” Initiative Returns The Giant Company recently announced the return of its “Feeding School Kids” initiative. Now through Monday, Feb. 28, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their grocery purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their Choice points into a donation for their local public schools’ food programs. Giant launched the initiative last year to address the issue of childhood hunger throughout local public school districts in the communities it serves. Together with its customers, the company raised more than $3.3 million in 2021. This year, the Giant Company will donate $250,000 to the program. Through the “Feeding School Kids” initiative, school districts have been able to use the funds to support meal programs such as covering outstanding student meal debt, expanding food distribution programs, creating on-campus food pantries and supplying extra weekend meals. University Posts Film Screening Event The Arts at Millersville University’s On Screen/In Person film series will feature the documentary “Risking Light” on Wednesday, Feb. 16, in Steinman Hall at the Ware Center, 42 N. The event will include a community panel discussion at 6:15 p.m., the film screening at 7 p.m. and an in-person question-and-answer with the film’s producer, Miranda Wilson, after the screenings. “Risking Light” explores resilience and the process of moving from grief to compassion and forgiveness. From the streets of Minneapolis, the aboriginal lands of Australia, and the killing fields of Cambodia come the stories of three people who had the courage to step out of tragedy of the past, risking everything to reach the light of their own compassion. The panel discussion and open forum will explore the themes the film, including forgiveness, compassion, resilience, and reconciliation. Panelists will include Christopher Fitz, director of strategic initiatives, training, and business development at Advoz, a local agency focused on conflict resolution and restorative justice services; Michael L. Workshops To Explore Fraktur Bird Designs Mennonite Life will offer two workshops that explore the Pennsylvania German art of Fraktur. This type of art was created by Pennsylvania Germans during the 18th through the mid-19th centuries and features calligraphic text decorated with colorful birds, hearts, and flowers. The first workshop, Fanciful Fraktur Birds, will be held on Saturday, Feb. 19, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Mennonite Life Community Room,
2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. Emily Smucker-Beidler will share information about birds prevalent in southeastern Pennsylvania, and participants will find connections through Fraktur images. They will also learn the origins of the polka-dot, the checkerboard, and various striped patterns in Fraktur. Participants will receive tips for drawing original works in the Fraktur style and then adapt designs from historical works
