Celebrating “Lancaster Gospel Roots” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Music groups both large and small will be showcased when the We the People First Friday series presents “Lancaster Gospel Roots” on Friday, Feb. 1, at 7 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Scheduled performers include the Gospel Sounds of Lancaster featuring Soul House vocalist Amy Shaffer, the Anthony Pieruccini Jazz Trio, Ray’s Temple Church of God in Christ Choir, Fairview Full Gospel Church, spoken word artist David Barton, and the Cielos Abierto Dance Troupe. The evening will end with the Music For Everyone Community Chorus.
The concert has its roots in a program that has historically been organized by Barton. This year, the Ware Center has taken on the role of producing the show. Barton is still involved with the planning, and many of the groups have appeared in the event previously. “The big addition would be the Music For Everyone Community Chorus. At 60 to 70 voices strong, they will be a great addition to the lineup and a rousing way to end the evening,” said Ware Center arts communication manager Amy Banks. “We really wanted to represent gospel music through different communities here in the city, and as a result, we will have a diverse See First Friday pg 7

Show To Feature Songs Of Inspiration
The long-held tradition of the annual mid-winter meeting of area beef cattle producers will celebrate its 50-year milestone at the upcoming Lancaster Cattle Feeders Day on Tuesday, Feb. 5, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. “We as organizers wanted to mark this special event with a range of speakers who will ... educate producers on ways to improve their operation (and) also for participants to see how the beef cattle business has grown and changed in 50 years, as well as get a fresh perspective on the future of the industry,” said Cheryl Fairbairn, Penn State animal science educator. The day will begin with a recollection of the past 50 years of Lancaster Cattle Feeders Day and the Lancaster Stockyards by Chet Hughes, former Lancaster

harmonies are just exquisite, and the costumes are gorgeous.� The cast includes Lancaster performers Ric Zimmerman, Sarah Poague, and Kat Prickett as featured vocalists, with Kayla Klase as female vocalist - swing. Zimmerman directed the vocals, with original arrangements and musical direction from Andy Roberts. Roberts and Scott Williams take turns as accompanist for the show, which is directed by Servant Stage’s artistic director, Wally Calderon. “Audiences will love the amazing vocal blend of the trio, as well as the individuality of each singer,� said Prickett. “Finding voices that blend so tightly is not an easy task. The best part is that the three of us are actually friends; we all care very much about each other, and I think this will translate to the audience clearly and add another layer to the show.� The show will tour to venues across Lancaster County with 30 performances through March. Cattle Feeders Day from pg 1 Lancaster County’s beef industry will be reviewed by Reggie Reynolds, member of the VCA board of directors. Next, Dr. Sara Place, senior director of sustainable beef production research at the National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA), will discuss beef sustainability in her presentation “Beyond the Headlines and Toward the Facts.� Later, Dr. Tara Felix will give an update on Penn State’s Calf-Fed Project and talk about feed efficiency tools. The meeting will also serve as Beef Quality Assurance recertification for attendees who need to update their certificates. Colin Woodall, senior vice president of government affairs
at NCBA, and Dr. Steve Loerch, senior associate dean of the Penn State College of Agricultural Sciences, are also slated to present at the event. The day’s speakers will be available to converse with attendees individually. Additionally, a trade show with a number of vendors will be part of the event. Registration will open at 8:30 a.m., and coffee and doughnuts will be available. Lunch will be served at 1:15 p.m. A cost has been set per person whether or not the participant stays for lunch. hunt will feature artwork from the museum’s new exhibitions, including “Hostile Terrainâ€? by Lucy Cahill, Jason De LeĂłn, and Michael Wells; “Geometric AljamĂa: A Cultural Transliterationâ€?; “Looking Skyward: A Commemoration of Lunar Explorationâ€?; and “Nissley Gallery: Reinstallation of the Phillips Museum of Art’s Permanent Collection.â€? As part of the new season, the exhibitions will address timely current events. In addition to the rotating exhibitions, the recently renovated Nissley Gallery will feature part of the Phillips Museum of Art’s extensive permanent collection including Samurai armor from the Edo Period and “Homestead With Signs, Symbols, and Numbersâ€? by artist Bill Hutson. For First Friday’s Feb. 1 opening, North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will host an exhibit of works by artists inspired by science and nature. Featured will be Matthew Dougherty, artist in residence, oil paintings, astronomy constellations; Kathy Rothenberger, ornithology paintings; Kevin Witman, astronomy photography; and the Lancaster Country Day School art class, mixedmedia work inspired by flora, fauna, and the seas. The works will be on display in the museum until April. The gallery opening at the North Museum will be Feb. 1 from 5 to 8 p.m. and will include a live harpist on-site. Admission to the gallery opening is free; after that, admission to the gallery will be included in the cost of admission to the museum, with separate costs for adults and for seniors and youths from ages 3 to 17. AHA Sets National Wear Red Day common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke. Individuals are encouraged to wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive. In 2004, the AHA created Go Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths
and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health. Students Present Winter Projects Anchor Christian Academy students recently completed extensive Winter Term Projects. Students chose a topic that piqued their interest and worked under the guidance of a teacher in the appropriate subject area. The projects were presented during a recent Winter Term Project Night. Students were challenged to research their topic in detail in order to give an oral presentation as well as produce a written paper and visual aid to demonstrate what they learned. The research project gave students the opportunity to grow in
knowledge and to experience the process of researching, gathering pertinent information, producing a paper, constructing a visual aid, and being versed enough in the chosen subject matter to present to the public. Some of topics included knife forging, cheese making, sewing a historically accurate dress from the 1800s, creating a new language, the history of sailing ships, interior design and room makeovers, raising broiler chickens, the creation of economic systems, the production of
vinyl records, quilt making, comparing sneakers, improving running times, and visiting orphanages in Peru. Society Awards Scholarships The Lancaster Medical Society Foundation, a foundation of the Lancaster City and County Medical Society, recently awarded its 2018 scholarships to Sara D. Fuhrman of Bainbridge, Matthew L. Miller of New Holland, and Frank G. Lee of Lancaster. Fuhrman received a $5,000 scholarship, Miller received $3,000, and Lee received $2,000. They were selected through a competitive review process with submissions from more than 20 applicants from across Lancaster County. Fuhrman is a Tufts University graduate and a second-year dualdegree medical student at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine at Temple University. In addition to her Doctorate of Medicine, she is

Events To Celebrate Black History Month Open House In celebration of Black History Month, the City of Lancaster will host a series of events and vote on a City Council resolution to honor the contributions and heritage of the AfricanAmerican community in the city. City Council will vote on an annual resolution to honor Black History Month at its regular meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at 7:30 p.m. in City Hall Council Chambers, 120 N. Duke St., Lancaster. Lancaster Public Art is hosting the exhibit “For the Culture: A Celebration of Black History Month” in the City Hall Gallery, 120 N. The oven was busy at Anna Kreider’s Drumore Township home during the first week of January while the Solanco High School junior finished perfecting her recipe for apple streusel bars. On Jan. 5, Anna and her parents, Wayne and Carla Kreider, carefully chauffeured her baked goods to the Pennsylvania Farm Show in Harrisburg, turned in the tasty treats for judging, and waited to hear the results. Anna’s journey to the Farm Show began with the 2018 Solanco Fair, where she entered in the youth division of the PA Preferred baking contest; all entries needed to include at least two ingredients certified as PA Preferred. It was Anna’s second attempt; she had entered cookies in the contest as a sixthgrader and won. At the Farm Show, Anna’s cookies did not place, but she and Carla took it as a learning opportunity. “ We didn’t know what to expect,” Anna recalled. “We saw the winners had multiple layers in their bars. It was something to keep in mind if I ever wanted to enter again.” After a five-year break, Anna decided to try again. “My mom and I sat down and listed what we liked sweet-wise and dessert-wise,” Anna said. They tested multiple varieties of apples before settling on Granny Smith. “They’re a tart apple,” Anna explained. “It balances (the sweetness) out.” The final result was an eightlayer bar of yummy goodness that took first place at the Solanco Fair. A shortbread-type crust was topped with homemade caramel sauce and sprinkled with chopped pecans and toffee bits. Apples seasoned with brown sugar, cinnamon, and cloves were laid down next, and then a cheesecake-like filling was poured over everything. The bars were finished with a streusel topping containing old-fashioned oats, flour, brown sugar, butter, and more pecans and toffee bits. After the bars were baked and
cooled completely, a drizzle of caramel sauce finished everything off. “One (Solanco Fair) judge said to add salt to the caramel sauce, but my family didn’t like it,” Anna remarked. “An aunt suggested sprinkling special sea salt on top, and that was a nice texture.” Anna made the bars for her family’s Christmas dinner and thought they were too sweet, so the week of Farm Show, her first attempt at the bars featured a decrease in the amount of cinnamon. She did not think the result was as good as she had hoped, though, so she made the bars again with the full amount. At the Farm Show, Anna’s bars competed against 63 other entries. Each judge tasted at least two entries, and then every judge sampled the top 10. Anna was thrilled to learn that her bars had been included in that second group and would have been happy with that. Thus, when her name was the final one called, she was stunned. “It was a shock,” Anna said. “I didn’t think I was getting first place at all. My dad was patting my back to get me to go up (to accept my prize).” As a reward, Anna received a big blue rosette and $500, which promptly went into the bank. Anna has no immediate plans for the cash, but she might use it for college. She hopes to major in psychology and eventually become a middle school guidance counselor. Anna would like to make a difference in the lives of young students. Anna also does not plan to make her apple streusel bars again anytime soon, although she has received numerous requests. “My recipe took three hours to make one pan of nine bars,” she pointed out. The time and effort to enter the Farm Show was worth it, even if she had not won, Anna said. “Having fun is an important thing while doing this. You never know what to expect,”

Sea salt flakes for sprinkling on top 1. Combine butter, brown sugar, water, and salt in a large saucepan and heat on medium heat, stirring until butter melts. Boil for 5 minutes. 2. Remove from heat and stir in evaporated milk and vanilla extract. Let cool. 3. Line a 9-by-9-inch baking dish with parchment paper. 4. Mix together whole wheat pastry flour, brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon in a large bowl. Cut in unsalted butter until crumbly. Press into bottom of lined pan. 5. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 18 minutes until lightly brown. Remove from oven and cool completely. 6. Combine all ingredients for crust topping in a small bowl, then set aside. 7. Combine diced apples, butter, brown sugar, ground cinnamon, and ground cloves in a large bowl, then set aside. 8. Combine cream cheese, egg, granulated sugar, and vanilla extract in a medium bowl and blend with an electric mixer until creamy, then set aside. 9. Mix together whole wheat pastry flour, brown sugar, oats, and melted butter in a medium bowl until crumbly. Stir in pecans and toffee bits, then set aside. Tree Decorating Contest Supports Nonprofits “Hearts For Lancaster” Fundraiser Set The Lancaster Barnstormers The third annual “Hearts for Lancaster” Valentine’s Day fundraiser, sponsored by the Rotary Club of Lancaster Penn Square, is slated to kick off. Individuals may order large personalized red hearts to be suspended from the lamp posts in the downtown Lancaster area. In addition, individuals may express their affection for their furry friends, as dog bones, hearts, and dog silhouettes may be ordered and will be hung on the fence in front of Binns Park. The items will be hung on Saturday, Feb. 2, and remain for two weeks. The fundraising effort is authorized by the City of Lancaster and supports the mission of Rotary International. The event’s purpose was to aid community nonprofits that support vital and worthwhile causes. Ninety-five local businesses and families sponsored trees to raise funds to assist in the effort. Visitors were invited to vote on their favorite tree or charity by purchasing tickets to place in ballot boxes by each tree. The event raised $19,513, with 100 percent of the proceeds going to the nonprofits represented. The Lancaster Barnstormers added $10,000 to this amount, bringing the total raised to nearly $30,000. The Humankind Foundation tree finished in first place, receiving 4,352 votes. The Humankind Foundation also received an additional $5,000 from the Lancaster Barnstormers, for a total of $9,352. Power Packs - Serving And Growing Back in 2004, Joan Espenshade noticed the large number of children waiting for breakfast outside a Lancaster city school on a Monday morning. Recognizing that these children may not be receiving adequate nutrition over the weekend, she founded Power Packs Project to help meet the nutritional needs of those children between Friday and Monday over the school year. The project sought to educate families as well by providing a recipe using low-cost ingredients that they could learn to replicate. Today, Power Packs Project has grown to help feed 1,600 families weekly 32 weeks per year by distributing ingredients for one low-cost meal in most Lancaster County school districts, but Jennifer Thompson, who became executive director in May, has identified several challenges Power Packs faces going forward. Among these are the need for volunteers, the need to
add food sourcing resources, and the ability to provide nutritious food that can be utilized by families from a variety of cultural backgrounds. Volunteers are needed both at the Power Packs warehouse, located on Walnut Street in Lancaster, and at the schools and other sites where food is distributed. “We need volunteer drivers to deliver food to schools, and we need volunteers at the schools for packing,” said Thompson, who noted that because of a rotating schedule, volunteers can serve as little as once a month. She added that certain volunteer positions can be physically demanding. Volunteers who work at the warehouse or drive vans should be agile and able to lift up to 40 pounds. At the school sites, packing the bags is not as physically demanding. Thompson said that she has special appreciation for the organization’s volunteer base. “We are trying to grow our volunteer base and learn from the volunteers
who have been with us for many years,” she stated. Finding food that is nutritious, rather than processed or high in sugars, is always a challenge for Power Packs, according to Thompson. “We would love to have more connections for food sourcing,” said Thompson, who noted that tortilla shells and fresh fruits and vegetables like broccoli, green peppers, bananas, grapes, and oranges are on her wish list. Thompson said that the organization is aware of the ethnic and cultural diversity of the population it serves and that steps are being taken to meet those specific needs. “We are learning about those families and what they eat,” she said. “We have to source foods that are different. We need rice, and we need foods that are kosher (or) if (a family doesn’t) eat meat, how do we (meet) their (nutritional) needs with foods they will eat? We want to make sure we send home food families will recognize and

Thompson comes to the position with experience in both food service and directing nonprofit organizations. She oversaw St. Joseph’s Children’s Health Foundation and also worked at St. Joseph Medical Center in Towson, Md. During that time, she ran a catering service and sold gourmet soups. In 2010, she realized her dream of owning a café in Lancaster, a place she called “homey and comfortable” that was open for nearly five years. Power Packs’ signature fundraiser is a spring Stay-at-

While gospel music is religious and spiritual in nature, Banks said that she considers the First Friday concert a secular event where attendees might have a personal experience of the Spirit through performing arts. “My hope would be that attendees will have an uplifting and joyous experience,” she remarked. to reveal the emotions of happiness, sadness, and discomfort, along with the notion of elegance, dignity, pride, and passion. “The materials that connect with my creations are ones like metal, wood, and cardboard that reflect everyday life. its to the campus. The program was introduced at LBC in 2016 following a visit to Uganda by LBC president Dr. Peter Teague. Wandera noted that pastors carefully selected for character, practice, and giftedness have been offered the opportunity to earn a Master of Arts in ministry. To date, 40 students have graduated. Twenty more are due to graduate in June. Each pastor is charged with sharing what he or she has learned with one pastor in Africa per year for the next five years. The inspiration for the program had its roots in Wandera’s own story. The third of six children, Wandera shared that he and his family witnessed his father’s murder in 1990. “It changed our entire family,” said Wandera, whose family then moved to Naguru, a slum in Kampala. “It’s called a forgotten community. There is very little hope there,” said Wandera. In 1991, hope arrived in the form of sponsorship through Compassion International. Wandera and one of his sisters were sponsored and began attending
the church through which that sponsorship was extended. Four years later, Wandera came to understand the Gospel. Noting that his family came from a traditional African background, Wandera said that the story of Joseph resonated with him. Later his sister and his mother made decisions for Christ as well. Eventually his whole family became part of the fold. Wandera finished high school in 2000, and in 2004 he graduated from Uganda Christian University with a bachelor’s degree in accounting and began working toward his certification with a goal of training accountants to do business ethically. He began teaching accounting, but he also felt a call to become a pastor. “I was deeply moved by change that happened in our home because of the Gospel,” said Wandera. With encouragement from his pastor, he began pastoring at the church, but one night a woman who had lost a 3-year-old child to malaria asked him a question he could not answer. Distraught, Wandera returned to working in accounting.

A discussion with Steve Wilson, a worker from Compassion International, brought him back to the ministry. He received the first Wesley K. Stafford scholarship to the Moody Bible Institute, with the goal of taking back what he learned to pastors in Africa. Wandera reached that
goal only to find that many of the pastors needed leadership training as well as theological knowledge. That need led to him to LBC, where he began working toward his doctorate as a recipient of LBC’s Wesley K. Stafford Leadership Development Scholarship, established in 2013.

On Dec. 14, 2018, Wandera graduated from Lancaster Bible College (LBC) with a Doctor of Philosophy in leadership, with the goal of taking what he has learned back to his home country to spread knowledge among pastors there. “Uganda has 40 million people and 85,000 pastors, but 70 percent of (the pastors have) had no training,” said Wandera. “(Yet) they are forced to explain complex theology.” Wandera added that theological information is not easily available. Wandera realized that a biblical solution to the problem existed. “Jesus identified a few leaders and went deep with (teaching) them and then sent them out to multiply themselves,” said Wandera. “My mantra is ‘Train one to reach many.’” This biblical solution led Wandera to found a nonprofit called Pastors Discipleship Network after completing a year at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago in 2008. Columbia. A nonprofit organization geared toward cultivating creativity through shared arts experiences, the Columbia Creative Factory is an offshoot of the Lancaster Creative Factory and has been offering art classes and programming for children, youths, and adults since 2016. Mychal LaVia, who facilitates workshops at the Columbia Creative Factory, said that the use of the space had been donated to the organization for the past two years, but the building went up for sale in 2018. The Creative Factory team decided to begin the process of fundraising in hopes of purchasing it as a permanent location. Otherwise, the group will need to find a new location when the building sells. According to Andrea Campbell of the Columbia Creative Factory, the cost to purchase and make a few needed upgrades to the building will be $425,000, which means that the organization must raise $275,000 by Wednesday, May 1. “We will then be able to get a mortgage for $150,000,” Campbell stated. “The income from studio rentals will cover the mortgage payments.” Thus far, the organization has obtained pledges for $55,000 toward the project. The approximately 11,000square-foot space currently has a first-floor gallery and a community space that is utilized for programming, as well as
basement storage and two levels of upstairs studio space that can be rented out to artists. Upgrades to the building will include making the space ADAcompliant and adding new ADA-compliant restrooms. Weekly art programs for students at the Columbia Boys and Girls Club - which is conveniently located right across the street at 248 Locust St. - are offered at the Creative Factory on Wednesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Writeface, another nonprofit group that offers creative expression workshops for veterans and their family members at no charge, also meets at the site. The Columbia Creative Factory frequently partners with the Columbia Borough School District (CBSD), Our Lady of the Angels School, and other local businesses and community groups. Kevin Lehman, founder and director of the Lancaster Creative Factory, located at 580 S. Prince St., Lancaster, said that continuing to offer community work space and programming is a major part of the plans for the Columbia Creative Factory as the team dreams of owning its current operating space. Team members also hope to offer even more programming for adults and families in the Columbia area. CASA Volunteers Sworn In A total of 12 new volunteers with Lancaster County’s Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) program were sworn in on Nov. 19, 2018, at the Emerald Foundation in Lancaster. More than 40 family members, friends, and CASA supporters were in attendance. The 12 new volunteers are Jason Burkholder, Lititz; Diane Gottlieb, Lebanon; Teresa Caruthers, Ephrata; Bev Kennel, Willow Street; Adele Ruszak, Lancaster; Jordan Schonhaut, Millersville; Sherri Stauffer, Manheim; Terri Small, Lancaster; Sophia Wanner, Lancaster; Liz Yocum, Millersville; Linda Williard, Lancaster; and Lisa Wood, Lancaster. CASA of Lancaster County trains community volunteers to be qualified, compassionate advocates for abused and neglected children within the court system. Advocates fight for and protect a child’s right to be safe, to be treated with dignity and respect, and to learn and grow in the security of a loving family. CASAs are asked to meet with the
child regularly and are authorized to interview people in the child’s life, such as social workers, attorneys, and teachers. They attend court hearings with the child and report their findings to the judge. Over the course of 2018, CASA volunteers advocated for 325 children, and 92 children are now with their forever families. Information sessions have been set for Monday, Feb. 4, at 6 p.m. at United Disability Services, 2270 Erin Court, Lancaster, and Thursday, March 14, at noon at New Joy Church, 35 New Joy Drive, Ephrata. Each program will not exceed one hour. The sessions are free and open to the public, but preregistration is required due to limited seating. Additionally, the next advocate training session will begin on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
