District Welcomes First School Resource Officer Lampeter-Strasburg (L-S) School District has welcomed Officer David Covey of the West Lampeter Township Police Department (WLTPD) as its first school resource officer (SRO). He is based at L-S High School, but he will regularly work with students in kindergarten through grade 12. “Safety continues to be the No. 1 priority for our students and staff,” said district superintendent Kevin Peart. “Having Officer Covey aboard as our SRO will only strengthen the great partnership that exists between the district and local police.” Administrators have been working with the Board of School Directors, WLTPD Chief Brian Wiczkowski, and the West Lampeter Township Board of Supervisors to employ an SRO since last year. In late summer, Covey’s position was approved to begin in January 2019.
Since then, he has been on campus several times a week and is quickly becoming a familiar face for students and staff. “We are very fortunate to already have a strong working relationship with the L-S School District, and we are really looking forward to strengthening that bond with the implementation of a school resource officer,” Wiczkowski remarked. “I’d like to thank Dr. Peart, the L-S School Board, and the West Lampeter Township Board of Supervisors for working together to make this happen.” In addition to monitoring the schools and campus for security, Covey’s responsibilities will include peer counseling, guest speaking, and teaching. Extension Slates Meeting, Social Event
will hold its monthly meeting on Monday, Jan. 28, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Meeting House, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Guests are welcome. Penn State Extension Lancaster County’s annual meeting and social event will be held on Thursday, Jan. 31, at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. Throughout the evening, attendees will learn about the Lancaster County Extension and 4-H STEM learning opportunities. Dr. Troy Ott, associate director of the Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences at Penn State University, will present “Truth About GMOs and Your Food: Separating the Myth From Reality.” The presentation will address the following questions: Are there genetically engineered (GE) animals in agriculture? Why were they developed and are they really needed? What would be the reason a farmer would want to Troy Ott use a GE plant or animal? Are GE foods safe for people and the environment? Are there negative consequences of feeding GE crops to animals or humans? Can people just avoid GE? Should people really be modifying genomes? What about unintended consequences? Resurrection Catholic School, 521 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will join Catholic schools in Lancaster County and throughout the nation to celebrate Catholic Schools Week from Sunday, Jan. 27, to Sunday, Feb. 3. To celebrate, the school will host a Light Glows Forth ceremony on Tuesday, Jan. 29, at 11 a.m. The event will bring together volunteers, families, donors, students, and staff to share how Catholic education aims to offer a strong academic curriculum that includes religion classes. The National Catholic Education Association has also designated Jan. 29 as a day of online giving. Called “Many Gifts, One Nation: A Day of Giving to Catholic Schools,” the event invites people across the country who have been impacted by Catholic education to donate at a local level. McCardell is a native of Kirkwood and a graduate of Solanco High School and the United States Military Academy. He is a decorated Army officer, has been deployed twice, and has earned several advanced academic degrees. McMinn is from Quarryville and worked for 56 years at Buck Iron Company, eventually becoming president and CEO. He has been honored by several trade organizations and has served on the advisory committee of Penn State University’s Department of Industrial Manufacturing Engineering. McCardell and McMinn will be inducted into the lodge at its annual banquet on Saturday, Jan. 26. Also during the Feb. 2 cere-
mony, attendees will hear from representatives of a half-dozen observational squads, who will report local groundhog sightings, and there will be a demonstration of the Groundhog Jig, Defender of the Faith Stuart J. Mylin will give remarks, and Hibernating Governor Richard Rankin, after consulting with Octorara Orphie, the lodge’s mascot, will deliver the forecast from the Pinnacle of Prognostication - a manure spreader. Coffee and doughnuts will be available at the event. The public is welcome to attend the celebration at no charge. YMCA Introduces Small Group Training By Ann Mead Ash
Herbie Beckett, health and wellness director with the Lancaster Family YMCA, is happy to extol the advantages of classes that max out at 10 students. “(Classes of) five to 10 (students) allow for individualized attention along with a group atmosphere where you can encourage each other,” said Beckett. The three Lancaster Family YMCA locations will all be offering small group training classes in some form beginning in early February. The YMCA at New Holland, located at 123 N. Shirk Road, New Holland, will offer four classes, including a nutrition class. The Lampeter-Strasburg YMCA, 800 Village Road, Lancaster, will hold five classes, and the City Center YMCA, 265 Harrisburg Ave., Lancaster, will offer eight classes. Beckett noted that the atmosphere of a small group is more conducive to students’ reaping healthy rewards. “With (large) group classes, it’s easy to get lost
in the crowd and not receive that individual instruction,” Beckett said, adding that personalized training can be expensive. “This is a nice middle zone for individual attention, (while still offering) the group atmosphere of camaraderie.” The YMCA at New Holland will offer Body Sculpting 101 on Mondays at 11 a.m. beginning Feb. 11. Beginner Bootcamp will be offered on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m. beginning on Feb. 14. Eat Well, Eat Smart will be offered on Wednesdays at 7 p.m. beginning Feb. 20. Beckett noted that the New Holland location has the advantage of offering a kitchen where class members can learn about macronutrients, which he said include carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. “(Students) will learn how to swap certain ingredients to make recipes healthier,” said Beckett. The fourth New Holland class will be Introduction to Olympic Weight Lifting, and it will be held on Thursdays at 6 p.m. beginning on March 7. “Olympic lifts are getting popular, and people are trying them and performing
them incorrectly,” explained Beckett. “They’re not getting the most benefit from the exercise if they’re not using proper form.” Beckett noted that the class will break down the technical exercises to teach the skills students need to perform the complex movements correctly. Lampeter-Strasburg will offer Fierce, Fit, Fabulous on Saturdays at 9 a.m. beginning Feb. 2 and Tone, Tighten, and Train Tabata on Mondays at 6 p.m. beginning on Feb. 11. Beckett explained that Tabata involves 20 minutes of activity punctuated by a brief rest. “The idea is to increase your anaerobic capacity,” he said, adding that anaerobic activity is higher intensity than aerobic. Lampeter-Strasburg will also offer Ab Attack on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 21 and Ready, Set, Run on Saturdays at 10:30 a.m. beginning on March 2. Barbell Basics will be offered at 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, beginning March 12. This is the sixth year that the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission (PMHC) has worked with the state legislature to provide funding for museums through the grant program. A total of $2 million was included in the 2018-19 state budget for the initiative. The Cultural and Historical Support Grant program is restricted to eligible organizations that are not supported by other state agency funding programs, including museums located in Pennsylvania with annual operating budgets exceeding $100,000 and at least one full-time professional staff person. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture is encouraging businesses to obtain the required spotted lanternfly permit to ensure they are complying with the spotted lanternfly quarantine orders. As the next phase of the spotted lanternfly life cycle gears up, now is an ideal time for businesses to learn how they can jumpstart this spring’s fight. There is no cost to businesses to obtain a permit. Under the law, businesses in Pennsylvania need to take the online permit training and exam and receive a permit for their vehicles. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture continues its work to contain and minimize the spread of the spotted lanternfly while also keeping commerce flowing in Pennsylvania.
In November 2017, 13 Pennsylvania counties - Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Delaware, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northampton, Philadelphia, and Schuylkill were placed under quarantine to help stop the spread of the spotted lanternfly. States with spotted lanternfly populations are also required to follow the permit requirements for Pennsylvania. This will help prevent the movement of the pest from other states into Pennsylvania. The spotted lanternfly permit training teaches business owners, managers, and designated employees how to comply with the quarantine - an important legal designation to help stop the spread of spotted lanternfly - to ensure each
of their employees are complying with the law. The quarantine order directs businesses, residents, and county authorities to follow guidelines to prevent the movement of the certain articles that contain any living stages of the spotted lanternfly, including egg masses, nymphs, and adults such as logs, stumps, or any tree parts; nursery stock; crated materials; and trucks or vehicles not stored indoors. By investing time and personnel to inspect vehicles to safeguard against transporting insects, people can help to ensure this pest does not reach farther beyond those counties that are already quarantined. As part of the spotted lanternfly quarantine agreement beginning on Wednesday, May 1, The
Department’s Bureau of Plant Industry will begin to perform inspections and verification checks to confirm that businesses are properly permitted. Failure to take the permit exam and educate employees could result in possible penalties and fines. Grandons Receive Recognition UPMC Pinnacle’s youngest patients - new borns - were recently dressed in holiday stockings and knit caps. Nurses arranged babies in the newborn nursery in the new maternity unit at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg for a photo op and visit with Santa. Since 1992, the Pinnacle Health Auxiliary volunteers have sewn stockings that are given to babies born at UPMC Pinnacle hospitals during the holiday season. This year, more than 140 stockings were delivered to UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg, Lititz, and Memorial maternity
units and were to be shared with mothers giving birth the last two weeks in December. James Grandon, chair of the Pinnacle Health Foundation board, and his wife, Jean, joined the festive gathering and were recognized for their donation to the Pinnacle Health Foundation’s Labor of Love Campaign. The Pinnacle Health Foundation launched a $10 million fundraising campaign, called Labor of Love, for its new Women and Babies Center in Hollinger Tower at UPMC Pinnacle Harrisburg. The Grandons’ contribution
supported the construction of the newborn nursery in the new maternity unit that opened for patients on Dec. 17. The full Women and Babies Center in Hollinger Tower is slated to be completed in spring 2019 and will include a 42 private-bed neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). Samaritan Counseling Center, 1803 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, will offer three Safe Church/Safe Places programs to the community. All programs will be facilitated by trained professionals. There is a fee to participate in each program. Circle of Hope, a support group for survivors of child sexual abuse, will be held on Thursdays, Feb. 7, 21, and 28; March 21; and April 4 and 25. Some need-based scholarships assistance is available upon request. Rising Together, a support group for parents and caregivers of children of all ages who were sexually abused at some point in their lives, will meet begin meeting on Monday, Jan. 28. Sessions will continue on Mondays, Feb. 11 and 25, March 11 and 25, and April 8. There is a discount for couples. Full scholarships are available for women. The group is open to men and women. Safe Church Cluster will engage congregations of various faiths in a process over seven to nine months to bring child protection practices and policies into practice. The program will begin on Saturday, April 6, at which time future dates will be discussed. Fees will be based on the size of the congregation’s membership. Pioneers Earn 3 Wins, Push Streak to 13 Straight by Mona Steinhauer
Facing the second and third place teams in Section Three last week, the boys’ basketball team took care of business as the race for the section crown draws ever closer. The Pioneers recorded a pair of 19 point victories over their Section Three competitors and then collected a 51-39 nonleague win over Conestoga Valley Saturday afternoon. Last Tuesday they traveled to Denver to take on Cocalico and came home with a convincing 50-31 victory. After falling behind 11-10 in the first quarter, L-S literally took control, exploding for 19 points while holding the hosts to a mere four and jumping to a 29-15 lead they never relinquished. Patrick Holmes netted seven of his nine points to lead the way. “We went to a 1-3-1 trapping zone and they turned the ball over,” stated head coach Ed Berryman. The Eagles kept pace with L-S in the third frame with both squads netting 11 points but the visitors doubled up their hosts down the stretch, 10-5, to extend the advantage. L-S dropped in eight treys on the night for a 24-9 advantage in that department. Chase Broderick scored all nine of his points from down town while Holmes hit two triples. Adam Stoltzfus led a balanced
attack with 11 points. Seth Beers (7), Zach Kingsley (5), Caleb Smoker (4), Nevin Book (3) and Aaron Rockensock (2) also contributed. In Friday’s home victory over Garden Spot, the Pioneers matched their season high with 11 three-pointers, placed four players in double figures and led from start to finish in a 66-47 win. L-S held the Spot’s leading scorer, Keontae Nunn (15 ppg), to four points, dominated the glass (9 offensive rebounds) and forced three straight turnovers to start the third quarter as they extended a 33-23 lead to 50-33. An 8-0 run late in the quarter pushed a 35-27 lead to 42-27 with less than three minutes left in the frame. A triple by Nevin Book (4 points) and a transition bucket by Zach Kingsley (9 points), gave L-S its biggest lead of the night, 50-31. Caleb Smoker, who came off the bench for 10 points, gave L-S a 20-point advantage with a 3-pointer to start the fourth. Spot rallied with eight straight, cutting the lead to 12, but it wasn’t enough. Smoker dropped in another triple and L-S went 8-for-12 at the free throw line down the stretch to deny the Spartans an upset. “Caleb did a great job,” praised Berryman. “He hit 3-of-3 three pointers. After an early season ankle injury,
he’s starting to get his confidence back. “We had 18 assists on 20 field goals,” Berryman continued. “That just shows unselfish passing and finding the open man. And we only had six turnovers for the game.” Stoltzfus led all scorers with 16 points, including 6-of-7 free throws. Beers followed with 15 (3 triples), and Broderick added 11 (3 triples) to round out the double-digit scorers. At home again Saturday afternoon, L-S secured its 13th straight victory with a come-from-behind result over Section Two foe, Conestoga Valley. LS fell behind 13-10 in the first quarter but turned things around for good with a 10-3 second frame effort. Broderick netted three of his four triples in the third quarter to keep the momentum going. “We shot just 2-of-19 from 3-point range in that first half,” stated Berryman. “We were 6-for-11 in the second half. We’re shooting 37% from behind the arc for the season so that’s pretty good. We did play pretty good defense, holding them to 39 points,” he added. Broderick and Stoltzfus both netted 12 points while Beers and Holmes scored 8 points each. Other scorers included Kingsley (6), Book (3) and Getchis (2).

WRESTLING In keeping pace with Manheim Central, and with their sights set on meeting the Barons for a chance to claim the Section Two crown, the wrestling team made short work of Lebanon last Wednesday night, toppling the Cedars 70-6 with five falls and five forfeit victories. Dylan Reading (160) posted the first fall of the night, decking Maury Bedolla in 3:53 after Hector Colon opened the night with a solid 14-4 major over Dedro DeArce at 152. The Cedars scored half of their points when Dallin Ocasio pulled out a 5-3 decision over Connor Penry (170) but then forfeited to Logan Davidson (182), Johnny Franklin (195) and Zach Shelley (285) after Tyler Phenegar secured the fastest fall of the night, decking Jenner Beckley in 16 seconds. Austin Reiff’s 5:32 fall over Brian Santiago at 106 extended the lead to 40-3 before another two forfeits padded the advantage. Riley Eckman (126) and Andrew Bliss (132) worked back-to-back pinfalls in 1:13 and 2:48 respectively and pushed the lead to 64-3. The Section Three Crusaders (1-3) won the first of their three bouts in the first match of the night. The Pioneers took control after that. Hunter Erb (113) and Harnish (120) scored back-to-back first period falls and Eckman (126) made it three straight with a 5:50 decking of Sam Lobeck. Catholic forfeited the next two weight classes and L-S won six of the last eight bouts. Colon scored a 2:57 fall at 152, pushing the lead to 40-4, before Catholic scored a third period fall at 160 and a major decision at 170, closing the gap to 40-14. Lampeter’s Davidson (1:30), Franklin (3:41), Phenegar (3:16) and Shelley (1:50) put the match out of reach with the last four falls of the night. BOWLING The bowlers, sitting in third place in Section Three, lost a tough one last Tuesday, bowing out 5-2 against the
last place team in the section, Elco (14-42). Brent Cox, who averages just under 178 per game, was the top scorer at Berks Lanes. He finished with a 214 average on the day, rolling a match-high 236 and posting a 642 series. Against Section Two foe Elizabethtown last Thursday, the Pioneers were dealt a 7-0 loss. Cox was again the top L-S roller with a 546, the second highest series of the match. The Pioneers are currently 23-26. SWIMMING Elizabeth Horner, Catherine Horner and Bre Fluhr all earned two individual first place finishes and anchored a sweeping performance over hosting Manheim Central last Thursday. The Pioneers won every single event en route to a 107-45 victory and kept pace with Elizabethtown for second place in the Section Two standings at 3-1. Undefeated Ephrata leads the section. E. Horner led a sweep in the 200 free (2:09.1) and 100 breaststroke (1:12.01) with Ellie Parido (2nd) and Emma Kury (3rd) backing her in the 200 and Molly Nagle and Parido doing the same in the breaststroke. C. Horner earned top times in the 200 IM (2:19.09) and 100 free (57.79) and Fluhr touched first in both the 50 free (27.26) and 500 free (6:05.24).

And in crossover action Saturday, L-S defeated a 4-13 CV squad 51-25. With Brittney Zameroski still out of the lineup, the rest of the squad continued to step up. Against the Eagles on Tuesday, Emma Drouillard, a sophomore, dropped in a pair of first quarter treys and senior captain Emma Gochnauer collected seven of her game-high 19 as L-S jumped out to a 19-6 first quarter lead. Daryl Strine, direct support professional with Occupational Development Center (ODC), 640 Martha Ave., Lancaster, is very proud of the crew he takes to Kinsey’s Inc., in Mount Joy, two to three days a week as part of ODC’s small group employment program. He cannot say enough about the ODC participants’ skills and work ethic. At the warehouse, part of Strine’s job is to move the boxes groups of up to four participants make as one of a variety of duties they complete, from the area where they are constructed to another location in the warehouse. The more boxes the participants complete, the more trips Strine makes. “They keep me moving,� he said. “On a busy day, I do 20,000 steps in four hours.� According to ODC executive director Gregg Richards, the program is designed to give participants a chance to work in an integrated environment. “Small group employment is a crew of program participants who go to a workplace with a program supervisor and work side by side with employees of the local business, (where they) are paid at minimum wage or above,� explained Richards, who added that businesses may utilize a crew for seasonal work or on a regular basis.
Strine said that ODC participants were carefully selected for the program based on skills. Over the course of a year, Strine worked to cull a list of 40 possible participants down to eight workers and four alternates. “They were competing for positions,� noted Strine, who added that the participants work four hours per day, clocking in and out and working alongside other Kinsey’s employees. Ken Mueller, public relations and development manager for ODC, said that the skill set of participants has been a good fit with Kinsey’s, which makes archery supplies and outdoor gear. Mueller added that many businesses have a variety of tasks that might also be a good fit for ODC individuals, including light assembly, collating mailings, and putting kits together. Strine noted that the ODC participants in the small group program have also folded and packed items such as T-shirts, archery equipment, traps, and gloves. Emerson, one of the small group participants, said that his favorite job is making boxes, especially the large boxes. “We try our best (to make as many boxes as we can),� said Emerson, who also folds T-shirts. Emerson appreciates the excitement of meeting new people, but he said he does get nervous sometimes when talking to people he does not know. That is where Deb Russell, who

serves as a liaison between Kinsey’s and ODC comes in. “Our crews interact throughout the day and during lunch breaks,� said Russell, who first suggested ODC participants help with box production in early 2016 based on her sister’s 40 years of experience at ODC. “The crew from ODC arrives with a positive attitude that’s contagious throughout the building,� Russell continued. “The way they support one another to accomplish the goals we’ve laid out for them is inspiring. We should all learn a lesson from them.� Strine complimented Kinsey’s employees, saying, “Interaction between Kinsey’s employees and participants has been excellent.� According to Mueller, integrating participants into community businesses is an ultimate goal for ODC. Strine agreed, saying, “All (participants) have designated disabilities, but I like to look at what they can do.� Russell added that ODC crew members have been willing to try new tasks, following instructions compiled in a binder. “The binder was made up so that each crew could work independently, making the final projects consistent for Kinsey’s and giving (the participants) a feeling of success and independence,� said Russell. “We’re so proud to be working with such a wonderful organization.� Emerson said he likes the work, but he also enjoys receiving a paycheck.
