Agriculture Program Receives National Award he Lampeter-Strasburg High School (LSHS) agriculture program, led by teachers Janae McMichael and Holly Oberholtzer, is one of six agricultural education programs nationwide that received the 2021 National Association of Agricultural Educators (NAAE) Outstanding Middle/Secondary School Program Award, presented during the 2021 NAAE Convention from Nov. 30 through Dec. 4, 2021, in New Orleans. The NAAE Outstanding Middle/Secondary Program Award is presented in recognition of agricultural education programs that have developed and grown to encompass, at the highest levels, all aspects of the agricultural education model - quality instruction, experiential learning, and student leadership development. LSHS’ Agriculture Department operates on the belief that all students should be given the opportunity to gain skills that encourage lifelong learning and productive citizenship, no matter their future career choice. The agriculture program seeks to helps prepare students for 21st-century jobs by developing professional skills such as problem-solving and

investigation. McMichael and Oberholtzer work together to develop curricula that meet the needs of their individual students and the agriculture industry in their community. Currently, the program has two general pathways: Power, Structural & Technical Systems and Agriscience. In the last 15 years, the agriculture program has added specialized courses like Veterinary Sciences, Landscape and Plant Design, Agribusiness and Management, Small Gas Engines, and Electricity and Welding. Additionally, students may take an independent study credit so they can earn school credit for their supervised agricultural experience (SAE) project. Additionally, the Agriculture Department views FFA as an intracurricular organization, and an element of FFA is implemented within the curriculum of each agriculture class. All LSHS agriculture students develop their own SAE project within the first week of classes. Students are encouraged to choose a project that will allow them to gain knowledge of skills needed for future career opportunities. SAE projects include developing and presenting
animal science lessons in an elementary classroom, shadowing professionals, on-farm and off-farm placements, a small engine shop placement, horse training placements, managing greenhouses, exploring the field of entomology, and raising and showing livestock. In keeping with the roots of the National FFA Organization, the Garden Spot FFA Chapter of LSHS aims to help students develop their potential for leadership, personal growth, and career success by providing opportunities for students to participate in a variety of activities and events throughout the year. Garden Spot FFA uses a committee structure that allows for members to get involved in program planning, leadership development, and service at the chapter level. Through partnerships with industry specialists, community stakeholders, chapter alumni, advisory committee members, and community professionals, students are introduced to many different career paths. Advisory committee members, who are from diverse backgrounds and occupations, regularly aid the FFA in activities like mock job interviews and interviewing

Around 2000, Trent Davis, founder and CEO of Servants Inc., took a mission trip to Guatemala. The trip changed the direction of his life. “(Trent) felt a call to continue relationships and give others opportunity to have that experience,” said Keith Cotton, director of outreach with Servants. Cotton noted that Davis coordinated mission trips and worked with missionaries in Guatemala under a program he called See Servants Inc. pg 4

In an interview with the Advertiser, Jim Kreider, the public works supervisor for West Lampeter Township, addressed the topic of snow removal. Advertiser: How many miles of roads does the township have? K r e i d e r : We have 76 miles of roads and streets. Advertiser: How do you determine the order and priority of plowing roads? Advertiser: What happens if a car is blocking the snowplow? Kreider: When vehicles are blocking streets, which is very rare, we don’t plow (the streets). Now, when there is an accident, and they are blocking the roadway, we try to plow around them and salt the roadway so they can get unstuck. We will help them. Advertiser: What can residents do to keep their property safe during a snowstorm? Kreider: Keep vehicles off of the street and let us plow. If we damage anybody’s yard, we will come back in the spring to repair. Check your mailbox. If we hit it, we will replace it. If the post is rotten or the mailbox is very weakly installed, we do not repair or replace. We do like when residents install plastic markers along their yard, so we know where the road edge is. Advertiser: Do you know about how much salt on average you lay down on the roads in a winter season? Kreider: Salt usage depends on temperature. On average, I would say 250 pounds per mile (or 19,000 pounds total). Advertiser: What would you say is the most valuable advice you could give township residents when it comes to staying safe on the roads during a snowstorm? Kreider: If people could travel on state roads - they are much flatter - and avoid using township roads that have more hills and sharp bends. Go the extra mile to be safe. We receive very little phone calls in snowstorms. We have very good snowplow operators, and we try to respect residents’ property and people that travel on our township roads. Also, in big snowstorms, we assist emergency vehicles, doctors, and nurses that have to go to work. Last thing, if a snowstorm is big, just stay home until we have everything plowed. Forfeits Hinder LS Matmen in Loss to Central

With six total forfeits and three pins overall for the match, Lampeter-Strasburg’s trip to Manheim Central was a short one Tuesday, Jan. 3. The Barons’ matmen led from start to finish, collected forfeit points in four bouts, scored a pair of falls and moved to 2-0 with a 48-21 win over the Pioneers. The short-handed visitors, falling to 0-3 in Section Two, earned four wins, including two forfeits. Jaiden Newton’s 11-9 decision over Logan Forrest at 160 put L-S on the board. Five bouts later, Conner Erb worked a 1:19 fall over Luke Gibble. Riley
Bonholtzer (126) and A. Cramer (132) earned the forfeits. The Pioneers were last in action on December 29-30 when they competed in the CV Holiday Classic. Bonholtzer (120) finished in sixth place and Trey Spahr grabbed seventh with a 42 second fall. The Pioneers finished 18th in a field of 27, slipping in behind 15th place Penn Manor. While a 20-point win does not sound like a thriller, the Blazers actually cut the lead to five with three minutes left to play before L-S shut the door. The Pioneers exploded for 25 fourth quarter points, including an impressive five treys which proved to be the turning point. “We led from start to finish but those three pointers down the stretch enabled us to pull away,” said Berryman. “They’re a good team and they made a run at us. We got a little impatient and missed four or five straight shots and they capitalized.” Ben Wertz led the way with a game and career-high 25 points. He
dropped in 12 in the fourth quarter, including a trio of triples. Ty Burton finished with 16 points, seven in the fourth, and Isaiah Parido chipped in with 13. He nailed three treys in the first half. Berkeley Wagner and Luka Vranich combined for 13 with Wagner hitting a trey in that pivotal fourth. “We also did a nice job on Camden Hurst,” Berryman said. “He’s averaging 21 ppg and we held him to 11. Berkeley was largely responsible for that, but we were aware of where he was.” The Pioneers, whose winning average is a 20-point margin, were also solid at the free throw line, canning 12-of-19 attempts including 6-for-8 in the second quarter. Wednesday night at home, L-S opened with a 16-5 first quarter, led 35-18 at the half and doubled up Cocalico 22-11 in the third, cruising to a lopsided 61-30 victory. Fast forward to 2005, when Hurricane Katrina inspired Davis to do home repair work stateside. “(Trent) responded with the same base of volunteers, and that’s how the disaster recovery branch started,” said Cotton, who noted that flooding in York County in 2010 really brought home the idea of working locally. “There are home repair needs here, and we have these skills,” said Cotton. “(Trent thought), ‘Let’s start working more regularly here in the
community.’” Home Helps began serving in York in 2007. From York, the leap to Lancaster County was natural. Davis now works out of The Candy Factory building in downtown Lancaster several days a week. According to Cotton, the executive team had a vision of expanding into a number of counties, with Lancaster being the first. “Right now we are in York, Lancaster, and Adams,” explained Cotton, adding that Lebanon, Dauphin, and Cumberland are in line to get offices next. Meredith Dahl, executive director at CrossNet, said the organization is grateful to partner with Servants Inc. “Recently, a handicapped-accessible porch was placed on the home of a family in our community,” she said. “The family shared with us … that they observed what it means to show love and care every time they interacted with the (Servants) staff.
