Creativity, community and outdoor fun will combine in Columbia for an event where visitors can browse, shop and connect with local makers. O r g a n i z e d b y C re a te C o l u m b i a , A r t i n the Park will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Locust Street Park, 550 Locust St. “This year we will have mostly returning artists and a few new faces displaying their work for sale,” said Janette Toth-Musser, a member of Create Columbia and the Art in the Park committee, adding that art will range from all styles of painting to photography. “Art in the Park is an

The festival, scheduled for 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, will be held at Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St. Speakers, vendors and activities will focus on cryptids, including the Albatwitch, a small, furry creature who resembles a baby Bigfoot and loves to eat apples. Sponsored by the Columbia Borough Parks and Recreation department, the festival will feature fun for people of all ages. Presenters will include Rick Fisher, who is organizing the festival and the Fright Nights; Stacey Leigh and Jason Darden; Rissa Miller and Lon Strickler; and Gwendolyn Purcell. “We’ll have four bands playing throughout the day,” Fisher said, including the Kracker Beez, Appaloosa Way, Boundaries Lounge Jam and Marny Klein. “We’ll have food trucks and craft vendors, too.” Food and drinks available for purchase will range from burgers and fries to lemonade, pizza and empanadas.

Authors in Conversation As director of the Columbia Public Library, Heather Beury wants to encourage people of all ages to read, even if that reading occurs in a program outside the library’s walls. With that in mind, she connected with Brittany Haynes, CEO of Palmyra-based Book Bar, to host an evening with authors Lauren Willig and Lindsay Hameroff. The event will take place on Friday, Oct. 9, at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 616 L o cust S t ., Columbi a . Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A conversation between the authors, as well as an audience question-and-answer session, will run from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., and the event will conclude with both authors signing copies of their books. “ There is no bookstore in Columbia, so one of my goals is to bring authors into town,” Beury said. “We do a lot of fundraisers with local bookstores.” She had visited Book Bar and had been eager to partner with Haynes for an event when she read a Facebook post from Willig touting her new book, “What Happens at Nightfall.” “I commented as the library page saying, ‘If you’re having a tour, we’d love to host you,’ and it went from there,” Beury recalled. “We’re super excited to have her.” Hameroff had participated in the library’s most recent Book Fair for Grownups to celebrate the release of her book “Rewrite the Stars.” “I spoke to Lauren and Lindsay and said, ‘We’d love to do something as an event with authors in conversation with each other,” Beury said. “They were completely on board with that.”

Refreshments will be served at the event, including items provided by the library’s Friends group available by donation. Drinks will be provided for purchase by Book Bar. Free on-street parking will be available at the library, 24 S. Sixth St., and the school lot next door. The church lot will be reserved for event staff

Ever wonder why the Lancaster Liederkranz holds its Oktoberfest in September? It’s based on tradition, going back to the first event in 1810, which marked a royal wedding celebration in Bavaria, Germany. The event was so popular, the king decided to hold it annually, and eventually the party began in September and ran all the way into October. While the local festivities won’t take place over many weeks, the event will still feature all of the fun, food and fellowship associated with the German celebration. Alpenrose Schuhplattler Dancers will present the L ancaster Liederkranz Oktoberfest on Friday, S at u rd ay a nd S u nd ay, Sept. 18, 19 and 20. It will be held outside under the pavilion and tents at the German club, located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. The event will run from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, from 12:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Competitors in a stein holding contest at the Lancaster Liederkranz Oktoberfest
New this year, organizers have expanded the size of the kids’ craft area, doubling the space, Deck said. “We recognize that this is turning into a big family event, so we wanted to add more to this area,” he explained. On Saturday, a highlight of the festivities is the stein holding contest. There will be several age groups, with divisions for men and women in each group. Winners will proceed to the state competition. “To complete, you just hold a stein full of liquid straight out in front of you as long as possible,” Deck said. “Our winners typically hold the stein for anywhere from three to five minutes.” This year, the contest will be held under the main pavilion. “We’re holding it right on the dance floor, to get everyone into the festive atmosphere,” Deck shared. The competition will take place at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. Oktoberfest will feature lots of German food, such as a variety of wurst sandwiches, including vegan
bratwurst, along with pork barbecue, roasted chicken, G e r m a n p o t ato s a l ad , jumbo pickles on a stick, potato pancakes and soft pretzels. Beer, schnapps and liquor, along with soda and water, will be available for purchase. Live music and a variety of dance group performances will also be featured. Parking will be available in the clubhouse lot for a fee. Free parking will be available across the street from the clubhouse. A free shuttle bus will be offered on Saturday only for people who park at Horizon Farm Credit, 15 Eby Chiques Road, Mount Joy. Admission to Oktoberfest will be charged for people age 21 and up, with free admission for anyone age 20 and younger. The Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay has announced its fall native tree giveaway. Four native species of trees will be offered at no cost to residents of Manheim Borough, Columbia Borough, Marietta Borough, and Mount Joy Borough. One of the simplest actions to support clean air and clean water is to plant a tree. In urban areas, trees shade paved surfaces and reduce stormwater runoff, keeping waterways healthier. Native trees also support
more species of wildlife than non-native trees. Among the species offered will be the white fringe tree, a small deciduous tree or multi-trunked shrub that develops fragrant, white flowers with long, fringe-like petals in the late springtime. The striped maple has golden yellow fall foliage. Residents may also request a sweetbay magnolia, a small-statured, semi-evergreen tree up to 30 feet tall with white, fragrant blooms. It commonly grows as a multi-trunk tree but can be trained with pruning to a single stem. Unlike other magnolias, this species thrives in soil with average to consistent moisture. The final option is the

A trolley will operate from Sixth and Locust streets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., dropping visitors at Coffee and Cream, across the street from the festival, and offering return rides for anyone who wants to park in downtown Columbia. Fisher acknowledged there is another event to celebrate the region’s Bigfoot, Albatwich Day, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 10, in Wrightsville. He hopes people will go to both events. “This is not about competing with the other festival,” he said. “When that one moved to Wrightsville, I got so many requests to bring it back to Columbia. This way, people can enjoy both festivals.” After the Columbia festival, Fisher will host the first of two Fright Nights at Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., from 6 to 8 p.m. He will read from his book at the event, and tours of the dungeon beneath the market will be offered. Fisher is in the process of restoring the dungeon. He’s ready to install a new floor but first wants to finalize plans to remove plaster that covers the original brick walls. Fisher is fairly certain the dungeon is haunted, and he recalled an experience a

His fascination with the unexplained began when he was 7 and saw a man standing outside his bedroom at his grandparents’ home. He assumed it was his grandfather, but the next morning his grandmother told him his Pap hadn’t been there. Years later, Fisher learned his sister had seen the same figure. As he grew older, Fisher’s interest continued, eventually leading him to collect stories of unexplained encounters from people in Columbia, Wrightsville, Marietta, Bainbridge and surrounding communities. Those stories were published in his book “Ghosts of the River Towns,” from which he will read at the Albatwitch Harvest Festival. He’s currently working

Demonstrations, live music, food and fun will come together at the 29th annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Breakfast will be served both days by members of the Conoy Lions Club, beginning at 7 a.m. An opening ceremony will officially kick off the festivities at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s activities will start with a church service at 9 a.m. As Tonya Bernhard, one of the event organizers, explained, the event features a display of antique gas engines and tractors. “Many of the gas engines will have some sor t of equipment attached to them, such as corn shellers, grinders and water pumps,” she said. “We will be pressing apple cider, as well as have a shingle mill making wood shingles. … In the engine and tractor area we are featuring homemade tractors and engines and also kitchen items.” A tractor parade will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday and at noon on Sunday. A variety of craft vendors will sell their wares, and lots of food will be for sale.

Falmouth Church will be serving soup, and some of the other food will be a pig roast on Saturday, whoopie pies and pies.” Craft vendors will include a blacksmith, who will demonstrate the craft and sell items, as well as vendors with paintings, embroidered items, local honey and more. A fishing derby for children age 15 and under will be held, weather permitting, following the opening ceremonies each day. Participants should bring their own rod and bait. “Word of Life church has a great area set up with lots of things for the kids to do,” Bernhard said. “We also have corn boxes for the kids to play in.” Live music will be performed by Summit Hill on Saturday and by River Rat Jenkins on Sunday. Company Posts Hunger Action Month Efforts In connection with Hunger Action Month, September, the Giant Company - known locally as Giant and Martin’s - will undertake several donation, volunteer, and awareness activities throughout the month to support neighbors facing food insecurity. Established by the Feeding America network of food banks in 2007, Hunger Action Month is a national campaign held every September to raise awareness and inspire action to end hunger in America.
