Get ready for the cheesiest event in Columbia, where you can fill up on comfort food and fun, said Daisy Pagan, vice president of the Merchants Association of Columbia (MAC), describing the MAC and Cheese Fest. “There’s nowhere else to eat for $5 and walk away having a blast and with a full belly,” she said. MAC will hold its fifth annual fest on Saturday, Sept. 19, beginning at 5 p.m. at the Columbia

Uncovering Marietta’s Hidden History BY CATHY MOLITORIS

A wealth of history can be found in Marietta, but much of it has been buried, forgotten or overlooked. Now a group of volunteers is working to bring that heritage into the spotlight. The Marietta African American Legacy Initiative (MAALI) Team invites the public to a dedication and commemoration ceremony to honor the heritage of Bethel AME Church and Wesley AME Zion Cemetery and the people who worshipped and are buried there. The ceremony will be held at Zion Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1290 River Road, Marietta, on Saturday, Sept. 19, at 1 p.m. “We are going to be focusing on four themes,” said Michael Sweeney, who gathered the people who comprise the MAALI Team. “The program will cover the church burnings, the veterans who are buried in the cemeteries, the Colored School and the Colored Camp Meetings.” As Sweeney explained, on April 19, 1861, both of the African American churches in Marietta were set on fire. Bethel AME burned completely to the ground, while Wesley AME Zion was damaged but later repaired. Just over a year later, Wesley AME Zion and the Colored School (also known as the African School) as well as a home on the property were destroyed by fire. He noted that about 35 Civil War, World War II, Korean War and Vietnam War veterans are buried in the cemeteries, including his father, but their history has been hidden.

The Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry will host a presentation, “Understanding Mental Health Services: Access, Outpatient Care, and Cost,” at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16, at Holy Trinity C a t h o l i c C h u rc h , 4 0 4 Cherry St., Columbia. The event, which will be held in the parish center, is open to the public, regardless of religious affiliation. The Columbia Catholic Mental Health Ministry - jointly supported by St. Peter and Holy Trinity Catholic churches - provides spiritual support, community, and education for individuals experiencing mental health challenges and their families. While not a substitute for professional treatment, the ministry seeks to reduce stigma, increase understanding, and offer compassionate accompaniment to those navigating mental illness. Merchandise will be displayed in the community’s chapel, as well as into the rotunda, down hallways and in a rec room. “Our rotunda is where the cashiers are set up, and one corner of the rotunda has jewelry,” Livingston said. “In the hallway going into the chapel, we’ll have lots and lots of plants.” Artwork will line the hallways leading to the rec room. “The rec room will be full of books,” Weikel said. “We have so many, we had to take over the whole room with tables of books.” Shoppers who work up an appetite can purchase sloppy joes, hot do gs, chicken corn soup, drinks and a variety of baked goods. Food will be available to eat in the dining room on-site or to take to go. The Fall Fest not only helps residents give new life to their possessions, but it also supports people both within and outside St. John’s. “Some of the money we raise is used to provide gift bags for personal care residents at Christmas,” Weikel said. “We give our staff Christmas gifts out of this money. We’ll also help with projects around the campus.” Proceeds are also distributed among several local nonprofits, including the Columbia Public Library and Bookmobile, the Columbia Borough Fire Department, Hands Across the Street, the Alzheimer’s Association and Luthercare for Kids. Along with the Fall Fest, Weikel has been instrumental in selling items on Facebook Marketplace, raising more than a thousand dollars so far for St. John’s and its charities. “It’s really made a difference, both for our residents and the community,” she said. “We started selling furniture this past year, helping families clean out rooms. Families look at me and say, ‘What a relief that I don’t have to figure out

We’re reaching so many people through the Fall Fest and through the items we sell during the year. For resident Bill Clark, who moved to St. John’s last year with his wife, Fall Fest has exceeded his expectations. “I’ve been yard sale-ing for years, and this is by far the best sale I’ve ever been to,” he said. “There’s a little bit of everything, and nothing is expensive.” Admission and parking is free for St. John’s Fall Fest. Parking will be available in the Personal Care lot, noted by signs on the campus. Fall Fest is a cashonly event.

All samples will be numbered so people can blind taste them without prejudice. Pagan said. “We didn’t want to have just another ‘chili cookoff,’” she said. “Everyone does that, so I decided that mac and cheese is one of the best comfort foods that everyone loves, including vegetarians.” The event has drawn very large crowds in the past, resulting in long lines for the first-come, first-served sampling. As a result, event organizers are offering a prepaid ticket option this year for the first time. “The lines are enormous, and people get anxious about supplies lasting,” Pagan said, noting that typically more than 400 people attend the fest. “We decided this year (that) to make sure you get in (you should) prepurchase tickets.” Everyone entering the venue, including children, must purchase a ticket either in advance or at the door. There is a slight price increase for purchasing tickets on-site. Proceeds from the event benefit MAC and busi-

nesses in the Columbia area. “We throw large community events, like the Old-Fashioned Christmas, which is being extended into December this year,” Pagan said. “And we try to offset the costs of the merchants to participate. Even at the mac and cheese event, we give the restaurants a stipend to offset.” She hopes this year ’s MAC and Cheese Fest will again draw a big crowd of people eager to sample a wide selection of the comfort food. “It ’s a great time to try a restaurant that you wouldn’t have otherwise thought about,” she said. “It’s a lot of fun scoring the dishes and being a part of the people’s court. … You’ll leave with a full belly, a fun time and maybe even plans for your next date night at your favorite mac and cheese spot!” To prepurchase ticke t s fo r t h e M A C a n d Cheese Fest, visit https:// columbiamerchants.com/ mac-cheese-festival.

Walk and Run to Raise Funds Lancaster Bible College’s homecoming and family weekend will include the second annual Bethany Walk in Love Walk/Run on Saturday, Sept. 19, on the college’s campus, 901 Eden Road, Lancaster. The family-friendly fundraising event, benefiting the Safe Families program, will begin with registration at 9:30 a.m., followed by a time of gathering and prayer before the 10 a.m. walk and run. A toddler race and the presentation of awards recognizing the top individual and team fundraisers are also part of the morning lineup. Those participating in the event may stay on LBC’s campus to enjoy food trucks, games and kids’ activities, a car show, sports games, and more. We assessed it and started manually cleaning it out.” T he g roup cut down trees, planted grass, straightened tombstones, excavated and even used ground-penetrating radar to locate unmarked graves. history teacher and former vice president of Marietta Borough Council, has been instrumental in helping, as has Andre Dominguez, a retired mechanical engineer who helped with cemetery conservation, among other contributions, and Rick Evans, who has also helped with the project. “We want to thank the entire community for their help with this,” Sweeney said, noting that the project is under its $23,750 budget thanks to donations of time and funds. “Even when we’re out there working, people will blow their horns in support, and we appreciate that. Jarena Lee, the first woman preacher in the AME Church and the first Black woman to publish an autobiography, preached at the site, Sweeney said. To build his MAALI Team, Sweeney recruited volunteers who care as deeply about Marietta’s past as he does. The members said the project has opened their eyes to a history they didn’t know. John Jenkins worked for years at what is now GSK in Marietta. “I would walk to work, never realizing that part of the lot I walked by was the Black cemetery in disrepair,” he said. For years, the property containing the Wesley AME Zion cemetery was abandoned, falling into disrepair. In the early 1990s, two local women, Catherine Tucker and Thelma Mae Waters, received a grant to restore the space but couldn’t prove the property was officially abandoned. Not content to let this histor y disappear, Tina Charles worked diligently to find the proof, and she succeeded. Now Sweeney and the other members of the MAALI Team are eager to finish what Tucker and Waters started. “What that generation was unable to do, we’re making progress to fulfill their vision,” Sweeney said. “Our goal is not only to preserve and honor the history of these churches, cemeteries and communities, but also to make that history accessible to future generations.” The MAALI Team has installed four commemorative markers, two at Bethel AME Church and its cemetery and two at Wesley AME Zion Cemetery. Each marker includes information and a QR code linking to a website where visitors can learn more about the history and significance of the sites. At the dedication ceremony, the program will to u c h o n t h e C o l o re d School, a painful reminder of racial segregation in the region, as well as Colored Camp Meetings, where upward of 5,000 people gathered just outside of Marietta between 1908 and 1913.

Placing people ahead of money is the model upon which Life Changes Realty Group’s business is based. “We’re really community focused,” said Jonathan Cross, a Manheim Township resident who’s been employed by Life Changes Realty Group for two years. “It’s why I’m part of this group. It’s the reason I probably won’t sell houses for anybody else. Money comes and goes, and I’ve only got so much time in this life. A d o p t i n g t h e company’s pay-it-forward program is one of the stipulations for employment. W hen a Life Changes Realty Group realtor assists with the sale of a property, he or she is compelled to donate 10% of their commission to the nonprofit of their client’s choice. The charities must have local impact and not be associated with political campaigns or politics. “ We’re not a national brand; we’re based in Lancaster County,” said Cross. “We don’t accept just anybody. The pay-it-forward pro gram is mandator y when we come on board. Everybody told me how much money I was going to make in real estate. But Brittany (Garner, owner) told me about how much money I was going to give away. We all do it together. It’s important to all of us. “I’ve got bills too,” added Cross. “I’m not a flashy person. I’m not necessarily doing this to make big bucks. At the end of the day, it’s really satisfying giving

someone keys to their first house. I help people get into their homes, and that’s very satisfying.” From 1 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, at Penn Medicine Park , 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, Life Changes Realty Group will host a celebratory community outreach/fundraising event called Million Reasons Festival. The fair will recognize the $1 million that Life Changes Realty Group has donated to charities impacting Lancaster County. T he free event will include food trucks, an artisans’ market, a cornhole tournament, other games, a dunk tank, face painting and bounce houses, and the kids’ area at Penn Medicine Park will be open for play. “Buying a house is the biggest financial decision that most people make,” said Cross. “When I meet people and give them my spiel, I talk about the pay-it-forward program. It demonstrates the service over the sale. As a sales tactic, it works out great. Clients will say, ‘Oh, I really like that.’” Through the pay-it-forward program, it’s taken Life Changes Realty Group 13 years to reach the $1 million donation milestone. Cross’ contribution

to that sum is more than $4,000 of take-home pay. “It’s incredible how we’ve been able to do it, especially as piecemeal,” said Cross. “There’s a snowball effect with that. It just adds up in pieces. It’s like drips in a bucket, and now the bucket is overflowing.” At the request of their clients, Life Changes Realty Group has donated funds to more than 70 causes and nonprofits, including SWAN 4 Kids, animal shelters, St. John Neumann Catholic Church’s Off the Streets program, Gamers Outreach, the Alzheimer’s Association, Building Bridges Foundation, North Star Initiative, Lancaster Conservancy, Power Packs Pro ject and education foundations. “It spans the gamut,” said Cross. “There are so many great causes that I can’t name all the ones we give to, and I hadn’t heard of most of them.” Life Changes Realty Group operates offices at 3002 Hempland Road, Suite 2, Lancaster; at 206 S.
