Mount Calvary Celebrates 50 Years

hen Columbia Animal Shelter hosts the ninth annual Art & Wine Heist, the event will combine creativity, mystery and meaningful impact. The festivities will take place on Friday, Oct. 2, at John Wright Restaurant, 234 N. Front St., Wrightsville, from 6 to 9 p.m. Highlights of the fundraiser will include a Wine Pull, where guests grab a mystery bottle and discover whether they’ve scored a top-shelf variety or an everyday wine, as well as art displays, featuring pieces by local artists. An especially fun part of the evening is the opportunity guests will have to “heist” their chosen artwork, said Tammy Jalbert, executive director of the Columbia Animal Shelter. “The heist combines both art and wine. Guests can bid throughout the evening on their favorite pieces of art, while the Wine Heist gives them a fun opportunity to take a chance and ‘steal’ a bottle of wine,” she explained. “It’s part auction, part game and a whole lot of fun, all while raising money for the shelter.” The event will also feature a live auction, where guests will be able to bid on experiences such as a trip to Key West, private dinners and chef experiences, luxury items and curated packages. A live Paddle Raise will help support the shelter as well. During this part

The organization will host a Halloween decorating contest, encouraging people with a Columbia address to decorate the exterior of their property for the holiday. The winner will take home a gift certificate to Union Station Grill

in Columbia, as well as bragging rights, said Kathy Hohenadel of Create Columbia. “Get in the ‘spirit’ of the Halloween season by entering this contest,” she remarked. “It is purely for fun.” As Hohenadel explained, the idea for the decorating contest came from Create Columbia board member Denise Brubaker. A passionate Halloween enthusiast, Brubaker decorates inside her home extensively for Halloween,

In 1976, a new Christian school opened in Elizabethtown. Mount Calvary Christian School began with 100 students and has since grown in size while its Christ-centered mission has remained steadfast. The school will mark its 50th anniversary with an auction and celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. The festivities will be held at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. Friday’s activities will begin with a barbecue dinner by Harvey’s BBQ, starting at 4:30 p.m. People will have the option to dine in on the main campus or take their food to-go from the West Campus, located at 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown. The meal will feature pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a dinner roll and a drink. A food stand will open at 5 p.m., followed by an auction preview. “Our live auction will be Friday, starting at 5:30,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations. “We’ll have vacations, experiences, themed baskets, class baskets and more at the auction.” An expanded online auction will run through noon on Saturday, she said. Saturday’s celebration will begin at 11 a.m. “Saturday will have more of a homecoming feel,” shared superintendent Jared Griest. “We’ll have a Kids Fest with Touch-a-Truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then we have a number of different athletic events happening during the day.” Games will include JV and

and her house has been part of the organization’s Halloween tour of homes in years past. “Denise wanted to reimagine and to reinvigorate this event,” Hohenadel said. “She felt that moving from a tour of homes to a decorating contest might be more attractive to potential participants.” The contest is open to residences, businesses and nonprofit organizations with a Columbia address, she noted, adding that participation will be limited to about 15 addresses. D e c o ra t i o n s m ay b e pretty, scar y or pretty scary, she joked, but all decorations must be on the exterior of the property. People who purchase tickets for Create Columbia’s Halloween Happenings will drive past the entered properties on Sunday, Oct. 25, to vote for their favorite entry. Voting will take place at the Historic Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia. There is no fee to enter the contest, and participating properties must be decorated by Saturday, Oct. 24. Halloween Happenings will take place at the Market House on Oct. 25 from 3 to 8 p.m. and will feature

demonstrations, a dungeon tour and more. The decorating contest is organized by Create Columbia, an organization that encourages education in the arts through a scholarship fund, which has supported private music lessons for a variety of instruments, art camp experiences for budding artists and tuition resources for a college student pursuing a music education major. “Create Columbia also sponsors local drama students as they prepare for an annual thespian festival,” Hohenadel said. “We raise money for these initiatives by coordinating events that blend art, fun and a positive showcase for the Columbia community.” To enter the Halloween decorating contest, call the Create Columbia event line at 223-246-7271. Proceeds will support operations of the shelter, located at 265 S. 10th St., Columbia. “A portion of the proceeds will go to our Mobile L earning L aunchpad,” Jalbert said. “Columbia Animal Shelter’s Mobile Learning Launchpad is being created as a traveling, interactive humane education center that brings hands-on learning about preventive veterinary care, responsible pet ownership, animal behavior and community re s o u rce s d i re c t l y to schools, neighborhoods and community events.” The initiative will feature seven engaging learning stations, she said, designed to take education beyond the walls of the shelter while empowering children and families with the knowledge and resources to build a healthier, more humane community for pets and people. Murphy to Retire From Big Brothers Big Sisters Big Brothers Big Sisters of South- Central PA (BBBSSCPA), a local nonprofit dedicated to creating and supporting one-to-one mentoring relationships, has announced the retirement of Mary Murphy, the agency’s vice president of development. The funds were raised through the fifth annual Spring Swing G o l f To u r n a m e n t a n d silent auction, hosted by HARTZ PT on June 5 at Iron Valley Golf Club in L ebanon. Founded by HARTZ PT physical therapists and golf enthusiasts Daulton Rutter and Kevin Sisbarro, the Spring Swing has grown steadily in both attendance and impact. Lancaster Downtowners is a community of seniors that fosters independence, social connection, and

lifelong learning, in part through its Just One Call volunteer program, which helps members with everyday needs like transportation, home maintenance, and technology. Through the HARTZ PT Charitable Organization, founded in 2020, HARTZ PT contributes over $1,000 per employee and more than 50 volunteer hours annually to support local nonprofits. To date, the company has raised more than $450,000 through annual initiatives like the Spring Swing Golf Tournament and the Fall Blast 5K , along with its 25th anniversary grant giveaway in 2025. Past charitable Spring Swing beneficiaries have been Beards for Brothers, Off the Streets, and Clare House.
