The Landisville Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) hosts the annual Fit Walk for kindergartners through sixth-graders at Landisville Primary Center (LPC) and Landisville Intermediate Center (LIC). This year’s event - with the theme of “Quest for Fitness,” inspired by Minecraft - will be held at the schools’ quad from 9:15 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. Danielle Sunday, PTO vice president, said Fit Walk encourages students to stay active while having fun and supporting their school. The homecoming parade will be held Saturday from 10 to 11 a.m. in the neighborhood adjacent to the high school. The parade will feature the HHS marching band, spor ts teams, representatives from all district schools, the homecoming court, emergency vehicles and more. Community members are invited to attend and are asked to set up chairs and blankets before 9:30 a.m. The celebration will conclude with the homecoming dance on Saturday at 7 p.m. The homecoming queen candidates are Lily Ammon, C h a m i e s K h a n i , Ta l i a Leber, Tori Reinhart, Molly Sohonyay, Reese Szulborski and Rose Wendel. Lily Ammon is the daughter of Dave and Lisa Ammon of Lancaster. Lily is the manager of the girls’ soccer team. She participates in Dance Theatre a n d p l ay s p o wd e r p u f f football. Chamies Khani is the daughter of R afi Khani and Diana Tarley of East Petersburg. Chamies plays varsity field hockey. She is a member of Varsity Club and dances with Dance Theatre. Talia Leber is the daughter of Jason and Karrie Leber of Landisville. Talia plays varsity field hockey, serving as captain in both her junior and senior years. Church Plans Social Activities Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, has announced that IGNITE, its Wednesday evening program, will return on Oct. 7 from 6 to 7:30 p.m. for students in third throug h 12th g rades. Students will be separated into small groups for thirdthrough fifth-graders and sixth- through 12th-graders. Each weekly gathering will include dinner, activities, conversation, and time to build friendships. Children and youths from the community are invited to participate. Also beginning this fall is Family Night, a new once-a-month gathering designed for families and friends of all ages. The

first event is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Each month will offer a different opportunity to spend time together, meet new people, and build connections. Activities may include games, hands-on projects, community ser v ice, and seas onal activities. Light refreshments will be provided. Family Night is designed to be relaxed and welcoming. This year the PTO is hosting a special challenge, giving each grade level a mission to raise the g reatest amount of donations. The top fundraising grade will claim the title of Fit Walk Champion and receive an ice cream truck visit. The second-place grade will earn extra recess, and third place will receive

W hen Encore! Home School Productions presents “Sense & Sensibility,” audiences can expect to see a mix of genres, said Paul Meo, a senior who portrays Colonel Brandon in the show. “It’s based on the book by Jane Austen, and the book is a romance. The show is a romantic comedy,” he said. “It’s full of romance, comedy, drama. It has ever y thing you’d want to see in a show, and it’s hilarious.” Brennan Garber, a junior who plays John Willoughby, emphasized that last point. “I’ve seen a couple of versions of Jane Austen’s works, and sometimes they can be kind of slow,” he said. “This one is going to invite you in and keep you wanting more. It’s really funny, with a great comedic twist on a classic.” The show will be perfor med at L andis Hall in The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. Performances will be at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 2 and 3, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 4. Featuring a cast of 20 homeschooled students, the play adapts the Austen novel and tells the story of the ups and downs of the

Dashwood sisters. Sensible Elinor (played by Grace Miller) and hypersensitive Marianne (portrayed by Cambria Brinton) are reeling after the sudden death of their father, which has left them financially dest i tu te and s o c i al l y vulnerable. A chorus of gossips provides judgment and commentary on the characters as Elinor grows close to Edward Ferrars (played by Noah Arnold) and Marianne falls for the dashing John Willoughby while Colonel Brandon q u i e t l y p i n e s fo r h e r as well. Through it all, the play asks the question, “When reputation is everything, how do you follow your heart?” Paul described his character as a middle-aged man who wants to find love. “He’s been hurt in his past, and he longs for another relationship. He’s invited to visit the Dashwoods, and he immediately falls in love with Marianne,” Paul explained. “He’s a very emotional, passionate man, but he’s restrained. He keeps it on the inside.” For Brennan, playing John Willoughby has given him an oppor tunity to stretch as an actor. “He’s sort of the rascal of the show and could be seen as the villain,” he said.

Playing this character is very different than anything I’ve done before. I usually play comedic characters, so being the villain has been a really fun challenge.” Encore! The cast of “Sense & Sensibility” represents 15 school districts, including Hempfield and Elizabethtown. Brennan said audiences can expect to see a show that feels modern despite its late 18th-centur y setting. “This is ultimately a show about a true, wholesome connection between two people. It allows p e o p l e to u n d e r s t a n d what they’re walking for.

“It’s an outward action of an inner desire for this to end,” she added. “As we move, we see people fill with tears. Some people will pray in the park while we are walking.” More than 500 individuals, mostly from Lancaster County but also from places like Harrisburg, Reading and Philadelphia, will participate in the Freedom Walk. They are supporters from infants to over 90 years of age, social workers, community members, university students, churchgoers and local leaders. T h e F re e d o m Wa l k requires more than 75 volunteers in order to run smoothly. “People are filled with excitement,” said Thurston. “There are opportunities to connect with other people. It’s a time for people to say, ‘I’m taking a next step in this meaningful experience.’ They also feel what others have gone through.” Thurston and her husband, Steve, established Hope Inspire Love in 2017, and two years later, the Freedom Walk made its debut with 200 participants. The Freedom Walk has evolved into Hope Inspire Love’s signature event, as both a fundraiser and as a vehicle for bringing awareness to human trafficking. “I look forward to it every year,” said Thurston. “Each of us has a part in this fight, you and I. Anderson is the director of music at Saint Thomas’ Episcopal Church and School in Houston, Texas, and is the preparatory choir director for the Houston Children’s Chorus. He previously held church positions in England and Philadelphia, and he served as an assistant organist of Philadelphia’s Wanamaker Grand Court Organ. He won first prize in the Longwood Gardens International Organ Competition in 2023. Anderson received his master’s degree in organ performance from Rice University’s Shepherd School of Music and his bachelor’s degree and artist’s diploma

The Lancaster Science Factor y has received a $300,000 grant from the Dar t Foundation - the largest one-time gift in the Science Factory’s history. The funds will support two new interactive exhibit areas at the Science Factory. The first area, the Wonder Zone, will engage visitors in exploration of light, color, sound, forces and motion, and eng ine er ing challenges. The Wonder Zone is designed to be developmentally appropriate and accessible for kids ages 3 to 5, but it may be enjoyed by visitors of all ages. C hildren’s Museum of Pittsburgh to adapt the Pittsburgh institution’s travelling exhibit, How People Make Things, for permanent installation at the Science Factory. The exhibit teaches students about introductory principles of manufacturing through the concepts of cut, mold, deform, and assemble. These projects are part of

a larger, multiyear exhibit refurbishment at the Science Factory, where 40% of all exhibits were installed when the organization first opened its doors in 2008. To date, $570,000 has been raised toward an estimated project budget of $750,000. Future improvements will feature updates to the Bubble Zone, the Water Lab, and additional exhibit areas.

T he Masonic Villa ge and Elizabethtown Model Railroad Club will open its 2026-27 season with open houses on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 3 and 4, from 1 to 4 p.m. Attendees will be able to watch trains of seven different scales running on more than 1,600 feet of track in the club’s space, which features new scenes, such as a drive-in theater and a 1950s public school. In recognition of Fire Prevention Month, members of the Elizabethtown Fire Department will be on hand on Oct. 3 to display
