The .918 Club will hold its annual Lancaster Printers Fair on Saturday, Sept. 19, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Al Starr Community Building at the Willow Street Fire Company, 2901 Willow Street Pike, Willow Street. The 13th annual event will have no admission charge and plenty of free, on-site parking. The event will be held rain or shine. Go to www.lancasterprintersfair.org for more information. There will be 29 exhibitors from all over the region, coming from all across the Keystone State, as well as from New York, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey, Virginia and Massachusetts. “We bring all kinds of people who are involved in letterpress printing and various support activities for it,” said Kenneth Kulakowsky, .918 Club president. “If you have any interest in doing anything in printmaking, this is the place to be for the day.” Food will be served at the event through the fire company. Premium hot dogs are the featured item, although chips, snacks and Turkey Hill iced tea and beverages will also be available for purchase. “We have suppliers of equipment and type, paper and everything else,” Kulakowsky said. “We also have people who print different things that will be for sale, like cards and posters and tablets. … We also have a print gallery, original prints that were made and printed by various printmaking methods. They’ll be for sale at the fair. “ There’s always somebody to answer your questions,” he added.

“The gala is one of the most important ways our work is funded,” executive director Patty Eastep said. “It provides critical support for Anchor Lancaster’s work, helping to sustain meals, showers, laundry and other services to neighbors experiencing homelessness, poverty and crisis.” Anchor is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that rents space within First United Methodist Church, 29 E. Walnut St., Lancaster. The program’s staff and volunteers consider every meal, shower and load of laundry an opportunity to show God’s love for their neighbors in a practical way. Anchor’s doors are open to anyone in need. Guided by core values of compassion, dignity and respect for every person who walks through the doors, the program aims to provide a safe, supportive environment
where guests can find the resources and care they need to rebuild their lives. Anchor volunteers serve a warm, nutritious breakfast from 8:30 to 9:45 a.m. every weekday, including holidays. To support dignity and personal hygiene, private, hot showers are available each weekday morning. Anchor also provides free access to laundry services to help guests maintain cleanliness and confidence. In addition, Anchor offers personalized support to help individuals regain stability through case management services, as well as connections to housing, employment and other vital community resources. Through partnerships with local health care professionals, Anchor provides free medical support on a regular basis, including on-site care from visiting physicians and nurses, as well as
specialized services from the Women’s Medical Van. Demonstrations, live music, food and fun will come together at the 29th annual Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, held on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 19 and 20, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Breakfast will be served both days by members of the Conoy Lions Club, beginning at 7 a.m. An opening ceremony will officially kick off the festivities at 9 a.m. on Saturday, and Sunday’s activities will start with a church service at 9 a.m. As Tonya Bernhard, one of the event organizers, explained, the event features a display of antique gas engines and tractors. “Many of the gas engines will have some sort of equipment attached to them, such as corn

The fair is the group’s major fundraiser. In the past, it has helped the group fund the Letterpress Printing Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College, which was closed down in 2023. However, earlier this year, the group was donated land for a permanent home in Willow Street. The group is amid a fundraising campaign for the new home, which will be located behind Graphic Crafts Inc., 300 Beaver Valley Pike, Willow Street. The club initially estimated that around $200,000 would be needed for the project, but rising costs and inflation have caused that number to double to $400,000. “Every time my phone rings and it’s one of my vendors, I cringe,” Kulakowsky explained. “My donations are not keeping up with

The .918 Club meets the fourth Wednesday of each month at 7 p.m. at The Studios in The Candy Factory, 342 N. Queen St., Lancaster, which is in the same complex as the group’s Heritage Press museum. Everyone is welcome, and the .918 Club is always seeking volunteers. The museum is staffed by volunteers from noon to 4 p.m. Thursdays through Sundays and on First Friday nights.

Renovations began in midMay, strategically timed to take place during summer break for the church’s Apostles Community Preschool. Once the demolition portion of the project was complete, church members wrote special “messages to the future” on the exposed concrete floor. Over the three-month renovation period, church services were held at the adjacent Homestead Village campus. On Aug. 30, the congregation got its first look at the new and improved sanctuary. “We had ‘do not peek’ signs up while the work was going on, but I’m not sure how effective they were,” Kosman said, laughing. “I think a few people peeked.” The most noticeable change is the replacement of the formerly orange carpeting with a soft blue. The center of the sanctuary now features a more practical laminate flooring, eliminating worries over spills during Holy Communion. Oktoberfest from pg 3 with the German celebration. Alpenrose Schuhplattler Dancers will present the Lancaster Liederkranz Oktoberfest on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 18, 19 and 20. It will be held outside under the pavilion and tents at the German club, located at 722 S. Chiques Road, Manheim. The event will run from 5:30 to 11 p.m. on Friday, from 12:30 to 11 p.m. on Saturday and from noon to 6 p.m. on Sunday. Lancaster’s oldest traditional Oktoberfest, it will be a celebration of German food, beer, music, song and dance. “I like to say that three different types of fests go on over the weekend,” said Andy Deck, fest chair. “On Friday, we get a lot of couples who come out to eat and have a date night before the weekend. Saturday afternoon is a huge family day. It’s always super crowded. If you like to be a part of something big, in the middle of everything and all the action, Saturday is your day. Sunday is very old-school traditional. We get a lot of grandparents and their children and grandchildren.” New this year, organizers have expanded the size of the kids’ craft area, doubling the space, Deck said. “We recognize that this is turning into a big family event, so we wanted to add more to this area,” he explained. On Saturday, a highlight of the festivities is the stein holding contest. There will be several age groups, with divisions for men and women in each group. Winners will proceed to the state competition.
“To complete, you just hold a stein full of liquid straight out in front of you as long as possible,” Deck said. “Our winners typically hold the stein for anywhere from three to five minutes.” This year, the contest will be held under the main pavilion. “We’re holding it right on the dance floor, to get everyone into the festive atmosphere,” Deck shared. The competition will take place at 4:15 p.m. on Saturday. Oktoberfest will feature lots of German food, such as a variety of wurst sandwiches, including vegan bratwurst, along with pork barbecue, roasted chicken, German potato salad, jumbo pickles on a stick, potato pancakes and soft pretzels. Beer, schnapps and liquor, along with soda and water, will be available for purchase. Live music and a variety of dance group performances will also be featured. Parking will be available in the clubhouse lot for a fee. Free parking will be available across the street from the clubhouse. A free shuttle bus will be offered on Saturday only for people who park at Horizon Farm Credit, 15 Eby Chiques Road, Mount Joy. Admission to Oktoberfest will be charged for people age 21 and up, with free admission for anyone age 20 and younger.
