Cylo Is a Lancaster Homer BY JEFF FALK

Cylo is a character, with character. “Cylo’s role as the mascot is to bring the energy to each game day and create excitement about our team in the community,” said Madeline Davis, who is the Lancaster Stormers’ community and fan engagement coordinator, as well as one of Cylo’s handlers. “Typically, professional sports teams do have a mascot. Cylo is a very important staple to our organization and is well recognized in the community.” Cylo is the official mascot of the Lancaster Stormers professional baseball club, which plays its home games at Penn Medicine Park, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The friendly Cylo plays a huge role in the Stormers’ overall fan experience, as important off the field as
is a great entrance greeter, loves to give high fives and arm wrestle, and will sit with fans to watch the game.” A minor league franchise, the Lancaster Stormers compete in the Atlantic League, a circuit whose season runs from late April to early September. As for Cylo, he is in a league of his own. With his help, the Stormers have one of the most loyal fanbases in the Atlantic League, drawing an average of more than 4,000 spectators at each home contest. “Cylo is our biggest cheerleader and does a great job of pumping up the crowd,” said Davis. “My favorite thing about Cylo is how outgoing and funny he is. I grew up coming to Stormers games and have loved him since I was a kid. In 1976, a new Christian school opened in Elizabethtown. Mount Calvary Christian School began with 100 students and has since grown in size while its Christcentered mission has remained steadfast. The school will mark its 50th anniversary with an auction and celebration on Friday, Sept. 25, and Saturday, Sept. 26. The festivities will be held at the school, 629 Holly St., Elizabethtown. Friday’s activities will begin with a barbecue dinner by Harvey’s BBQ, starting at 4:30 p.m. People

50 Years from pg 1 will have the option to dine in on the main campus or take their food to-go from the West Campus, located at 35 Elm Ave., Elizabethtown. The meal will feature pulled pork, baked beans, macaroni and cheese, a dinner roll and a drink. A food stand will open at 5 p.m., followed by an auction preview. “Our live auction will be Friday, starting at 5:30,” said Lindsay Norris, director of development and community relations. “We’ll have vacations, experiences, themed baskets, class baskets and more at the auction.” An expanded online auction will run through noon on Saturday, she said. Saturday’s celebration will begin at 11 a.m. “Saturday will have more of a homecoming feel,” shared superintendent Jared Griest. “We’ll have a Kids Fest with Touch-a-Truck from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., and then we have a number of different athletic events happening during the day.” Games will include JV and varsity volleyball, as well as two varsity soccer matches. From 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., Chosen Brew Coffee Truck and a food stand operated by the high school will serve food and drinks. The highlight of Saturday’s

While banners have been hung and players have come and gone, the sturdy Cylo has been one of the Stormers’ few constants. “Cylo is named after Cy Young,” said Davis. “His full name is Cyloicious L. Stormer and has been that since the Stormers first debuted in 2005. I hope everyone gets the chance to meet Cylo. You know where to find him.” Outside of Penn Medicine Park, Cylo makes dozens of local appearances each year. He’s just as comfortable reading books to preschoolers as he is visiting residents of retirement communities. “I do schedule the appearances,” said Davis, a resident of the city. “It’s a lot of fun connecting with different people and organizations, and it’s always rewarding to see faces light up when he arrives. Cylo appeals to all ages, and Cylo loves everyone.” “Cylo is very easily recognized in the Lancaster area,” concluded Davis. “When traveling downtown, we often receive honks from passing cars and we are frequently stopped for pictures. activities will be a Celebration Program, beginning at 4 p.m. in the school gym. “This will be a one-hour program for people to celebrate the 50 years of the school,” Griest said. “We’re collecting ‘50 Stories of Mount Calvary’ right now, and we’re going to use those stories to talk about how God has been faithful to the ministry of the school.” From 5 to 8:30 p.m., a variety of food trucks will be on-site, and the soccer games will be held, with a homecoming celebration between the two games. The evening will conclude with a drone show above the soccer field. Proceeds from the event will benefit the ministry of the school and will provide financial assistance to students. “We serve about 775 students in preschool through 12th grade,” Griest said. “We’re one of the largest Christian schools in central Pennsylvania. We have students from four different counties. Students in nine districts are bussed to us, and we have a total of 12 or 13 districts represented.” In L ancaster County, students attend Mount Calvary Christian School from the Elizabethtown School District, as well as Donegal, Manheim Central, Hempfield, Penn Manor, Manheim Township and Columbia school districts. About 80 different churches are represented in the school, Griest said. He attributes the school’s longevity to both God’s presence and the dedication of Mount Calvary Church. “The theme of the year is ‘50 Years of God’s Faithfulness,’” he stated. “He

Church to Offer Murphy to Retire Cancer Support Group From Big Brothers Hempfield Church, 3050 of the cancer journey. Big Sisters Marietta Ave., Lancaster, The suppor t group will offer Living With Cancer, a free, faith-based support group for individuals currently battling cancer, cancer survivors, and caregivers. T he g roup meets on the third Wednesday of each month from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the Prayer Room at Hempfield Church. This fall’s meeting dates are Sept. 16, Oct. 21, and Nov. 18. Led by Ruby Sheetz, a registered nurse and cancer s u r v i vo r, L i v i n g W i t h Cancer provides a compassionate environment where participants can find hope, encouragement, and practical resources while connecting with others who understand the challenges
addresses the physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of living with cancer. Through education, discussion, prayer, and reflection, participants are equipped with practical tools for navigating treatment, survivorship, caregiving, fears of recurrence, and the uncertainties that often accompany a cancer diagnosis. Big Brothers Big Sisters of South-Central PA (BBBSSCPA), a local nonprofit dedicated to creating and supporting oneto-one mentoring relationships, has announced the retirement of Mary Murphy, the agency’s vice president of development. Since joining the organization in 2021, Murphy has been instrumental in increasing outreach and raising funds to expand the agency ’s footprint across a seven-county service area. She has led BBBSSCPA’s signature fundraising events, such as Bowl for Kids’ Sake and Over the Edge, as well as securing support for major milestone events like the Youth Leadership Summit and the recent
45th anniversar y gala. Under her leadership, the agency has partnered with numerous local corporations and businesses that have helped fund mentoring programs to reach more youths. During Murphy’s tenure, the agency received three consecutive Growth Awards, as well as the 2024 Agency of the Year Award from Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. The agency was Harrisburg Magazine’s 2026 Charity of Choice. The agency has a succession plan in place, and a search for Mur phy ’s replacement was scheduled to begin in August. To see people continuing to come tells me they really care about (preventing) suicide.” The organization’s seventh annual Suicide Prevention Conference will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 17, at DoubleTree Resort, 2400 Willow Street Pike, Lancaster. professionals, educators, company employees, faith leaders and community members. “It’s for everyone,” said McDevitt, a resident of Manheim Township. “It’s a really neat event. It’s so heartfelt. You see people connecting and talking about a very difficult topic. I see people walking away with hope. Conversations continue beyond the conference. We have made progress with the stigma, but there are too many people still struggling in silence. It gives people insight and motivation, and they walk away with tools they can use right away.” In 2025, a total of 87 Lancaster County residents were victims of suicide, the highest total since 2012. This year, the locale is on pace to reduce that number. “Suicide is very complicated,” said McDevitt. “Not everyone who dies from suicide has a mental health issue. Prevention comes in detection and early intervention. I think our work has really forced a redirection of the stigma. Many folks still don’t know the warning signs of suicide. Loneliness and social isolation increase the risk of suicide. Those are the types of things we’re going to be talking about at the conference.” MHA of Lancaster-Lebanon Counties oversees the suicide prevention coalition, which established the conference in 2018. The organization, which employs six full-time staff members and six part-time staff members, has been operating for more than 70 years. “We’ve been around for a very long time,” said McDevitt. “A lot of people know us as ‘MHA.’ We’ve always been known for education, advocacy and support, and now I think we’re going deeper.”
