Binns Park, 100 N. Queen St., Lancaster, will be the site of an event to ring in 2019 on Monday, Dec. 31, from 10 p.m. to midnight. Local residents are invited. Local band One Too Many will take the main stage. As the Red Rose City, Lancaster will feature the Red Rose dropping at midnight. The event will also feature fireworks, hot chocolate, and light food.

Learn, Set, Spike New Program Will Introduce Youngsters To Volleyball A new instructional volleyball program open to girls and boys in grades three through six in the Hempfield School District will start on Tuesday, Jan. 29, 2019. Hempfield Coed Elementary Volleyball practices will be held in the gymnasium of Centerville Middle School, 865 Centerville Road, Lancaster, on Tuesdays through Feb. 26, 2019. The program was created when two former volleyball players from a Hempfield High School state championship girls’ team, after successful college careers, approached the Hempfield Volleyball Parents Alumni Association (HVPAA) about starting a new initiative for elementary-age students. Brittany McMullen and Morgan Buterbaugh
both have graduated from college and now are teachers. Their goal is to provide basic instruction in the three basic skills - passing, setting, and hitting - all while helping youngsters develop a love for the game. Each session will run for two hours, and participants should bring water bottles. A registration fee has been set, with a maximum amount per family. Early registration is encouraged. The sponsoring organization, HVPAA, is a nonprofit that was established in 2007 to support the sport of volleyball in the Hempfield community. When Tyler Stumpf, Billy Hecht, and a few of their friends from the Mount Joy American Legion got together 10 years ago to plan and host a New Year’s Day motorcycle ride to raise funds to
support local veterans, they had no idea how far-reaching the event would grow to be. “We thought maybe it’d be one or two years,” recalled Stumpf. Instead, what started out as a fundraiser with 11 riders in year one has grown to more than 450 participants.

Some folks travel from as far as Philadelphia, Baltimore, the Poconos, and Philipsburg for the ride, and each year a prize is given to the rider who wins the Long Distance Award for making the longest trek to participate. Perhaps a less-coveted prize is that of being named Baby New Year. Each year, one lucky - or possibly unlucky - designee rides the entire first chilly mile dressed in a baby costume. Elizabethtown resident Larry Witters will have the honor of serving as Baby New Year for 2019. The 10th anniversary New Year’s Day motorcycle ride will take off from the Walter S. Ebersole American Legion Post 185, located at 255 W. Main St., Mount Joy, at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Jan. 1, 2019. The registration fee, which is a set per-person donation, will include a meal at the conclusion of the ride. Registration will open at 10 a.m., and folks are invited to socialize at Post 185, where a variety of breakfast food and coffee will be available for purchase.
The Post 185 Ladies Auxiliary will serve homemade soup before the ride. A few vendors will offer items for purchase including commemorative shirts and patches for vests. Organized by members of Post 185, the ride is open to the public and not only to motorcyclists, but to drivers of any other vehicles who would like to participate to honor veterans. The approximately 25- to 30-mile ride follows a scenic route along the Susquehanna River through Marietta and Bainbridge. The ride will finish at the Elizabethtown American Legion Post 329, located at 240 N. Hanover St., Elizabethtown, where a traditional pork and sauerkraut meal will be served in the banquet hall. More than 100 pounds of mashed potatoes and 160 pounds of pork and sauerkraut were prepared last year, and any leftovers go up for bids at the close of the event. Attendees may also bid on items at a Chinese auction, including motorcycle merchandise, gift cards, and more. Stumpf and Hecht said that in
the past nine years, the charity ride has raised more than $125,000 for the veterans who utilize services at the Lebanon VA Medical Center. Organizers attribute the ride’s success to its timing - not a lot of other local rides are scheduled on New Year’s Day - and also to the fact that all of the funds raised go directly toward local veterans, with no overhead or administrative costs. Organizers would like to raise at least $25,000 this year to reach or surpass the $150,000 mark. Icy conditions and freezing cold temperatures last year meant that it was the first time the ride portion of the event had to be
canceled, but Stumpf said that nearly 200 people still showed up for the meal at the Legion and raised more than $23,000. The Astronomy Enthusiasts of Lancaster County (AELC) will hold their next meeting on Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2019, at 6:30 p.m. at the Lititz Public Library, 651 Kissel Hill Road. The program is free and open to the public. In October 2017, a University of Hawaii astronomer captured an interstellar object as it raced through the inner solar system. This started a global observing campaign to study this object, later named Oumuamua, before it vanished from sight. During the meeting, former Sky & Telescope editor-in-chief Robert Naeye will share the story of the first known interstellar object to pass through the solar system. AGO Chapter Sets Show To Feature “Book Of Matthew Project” Carol Sing, Recital The Community Room on King, 106 W. King St., Lancaster, will host a show titled “The Book of Matthew Project” by artist Daehong Kim for First Friday, Jan. 4, from 6 to 9 p.m. “The Book of Matthew Project” was conceived in June 2010 as a personal pledge to support a church ministry that was sending a group of young adults on a short-term service mission to South Korea. Kim committed to handwriting each verse from the Gospel of Matthew on individual cards, accounting for 1,071 verses. Kim also invited people to participate by contributing verses, and these verses and others were collected and applied on five canvases. The purpose of writing each verse was to

preschools and senior communities. That is a 23.5 percent increase over 2017, and the library system continues to receive requests for service from Lancaster County communities. The library systems credits the expansion of the Bookmobile service not only to the new Bookmobile, but also to a new partnership between the library system and The Shalom Project. The partnership resulted in the placement of Kaitlin Abrahams as a new intern for the Bookmobile. Abrahams grew up in Kansas and recently graduated from EMU with a degree in English and writing studies.

The Library System of Lancaster County has announced the expansion of its Bookmobile service. During the past year, the Bookmobile significantly increased its service by adding an additional eight Head Start stops and four stops to other communities: Country Meadows Assisted Living Facility, Woodcrest Villa Retirement Village, Manor Heights (Mountville), and Pleasant Valley Amish Store (Kirkwood). Last year, the Bookmobile had 51 stops on its monthly schedule. Since the arrival of the new Bookmobile in the spring, the schedule now includes 63 stops to Head Start locations,

Innovations Challenge Set Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) and the Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) are reminding high school students in grades nine to 12 to submit their entries for PennDOT’s Innovations Challenge. The deadline for submission is Monday, Dec. 31. This year’s challenge asks students to look at innovative methods, aside from laws and educational campaigns, that can be developed in the next five to 10 years to get drivers to slow down in work zones. The Innovations Challenge aims to not only help
students explore real transportation challenges that PennDOT is facing, but also open their minds to the possibility of working for PennDOT after graduation. Regional winners will be selected and invited to compete in Harrisburg next year for the statewide championship. The start of the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) application process for the 2018-19 season has begun. LIHEAP provides assistance for home heating bills to keep low-income Pennsylvanians warm and safe during the winter months. Assistance is available for renters and homeowners. Crisis and regular LIHEAP applications are available now through Friday, April 12, 2019. During the 2017-18 LIHEAP season, 344,008 households statewide received nearly $116 million in LIHEAP cash benefits. These households received an average season benefit of $337. LIHEAP benefits are paid directly to the utility company. Consumers are encouraged to enroll in LIHEAP and to explore other assistance programs available from their utilities and various nonprofit groups. Combined, these many different resources help hundreds of thousands of households and families across the commonwealth every year. The program’s goal is to prevent LIHEAP customers from entering the winter season with shut-off utilities. The board of directors of the Library System of Lancaster County (LSLC) have announced that executive director Bonnie Young will retire from her post on Monday, Dec. 31. Young has served as executive director since January 2016 and has provided leadership for the library system staff and operations during the past three years. During her tenure, Young achieved breakthrough results with her fundraising efforts in support of Bookmobile services and the Be READy Rover early literacy program in conjunction with Systems Aligned In Learning (SAIL), a Collective Impact Partnership with United Way of Lancaster County. Young is known for fostering a spirit of collaboration among the public libraries and LSLC staff and for streamlining the operation of the LSLC. Young had served as head of public libraries and Professional Development for the Office of Commonwealth Libraries from 2004 to 2014. She has led public libraries across the state by developing and implementing strategies for improving library services, especially in the areas of professional development, programming, marketing, technology and trustee leadership training. Prior to her position at Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Young served as director of the Lititz Public Library from 2000 to 2004 and director of the Adamstown Area Library from 1989 to 2000. She received her bachelor’s degree from Millersville University and her Master of Library Science degree from Clarion University.
Healthy Columbia, an initiative launched approximately one and a half years ago by CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health, had proposed a partnership with the borough to restore and revitalize the market house and entered into a management agreement with the borough on Nov. 12, according to Philip Goropoulos, president of CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health. Restoring and revitalizing the Columbia Market House fit well with Healthy Columbia’s goal of expanding fresh food access in the area. Goropoulos said that an official reopening date for the market has not been set, but planners are hopeful that the market will be ready to serve the public by the spring or summer of 2019. Proposed renovations for the property include repairs to the brick floor, upgrades to the electrical system and bathrooms, and the addition of a heating and cooling system. Once renovations have been completed, Goropoulos said the space will include anywhere from nine to 20 stands, along with a permanent 40-seat restaurant space. The design for the restaurant is still being finalized, but Goropoulos said the eatery will aim to be unique in its approach. The market will likely be open two days a week, while the restaurant will be open five days. Hours of operation and types of vendors may be modified to accommodate community interest. Approximately 250 people listened to solemn tunes and sang the more jovial at Rock the Church Lights Up Christmas on Nov. 30 at St. Anthony of Padua Church in Lancaster. Local musician Liz Fulmer, joined by Emily Fritz and Douglas Thomas of Wisdom’s Table, performed traditional songs like “Silent Night” and original songs from her CD “Heaven Knows.” Local meteorologist Joe Calhoun was the master of ceremonies of the program. Principal Brenda Weaver asked the crowd to wave the pin lights they had been given and sing “This Little Light of Mine.” She thanked the music groups from San Juan Bautista and St. Anthony of Padua churches that supported the event. Priests from St. Anthony, St. Mary and San Juan Bautista gave opening and closing prayers.
