Rooting For The Seeds To Grow BY COURTNEY MENGEL
s part of the congregation’s efforts to improve water quality, expand pollinator and wildlife habitat, and address climate change, members of Landisville Mennonite Church invited volunteers to join them as they converted 3.65 acres from farmland into forest and meadow. On Nov. 6, over 80 volunteers planted meadow seed on 1.25 acres, and the following Saturday, Nov. 13, over 100 volunteers planted 640 tree seedlings on 2.4 acres. “We wanted to do this as part of our commitment to caring for God’s creation, both now and for future generations,” said Brenda Horst, a member of Landisville Mennonite Church who helped organize the project, “but we couldn’t have done it alone. We really relied on the expertise of Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay and volunteers from the community to get this done.” Ryan Davis, Pennsylvania forest projects manager at Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay, worked closely

with the church by advising the congregation on what native species both meadow plants and trees were best for the property as well as how and when to plant them. Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay will continue to advise the church on maintenance for the next five years. “The seeding and tree planting days were just the very beginning of the process,” explained Davis. “We can expect the meadow to begin benefiting pollinators and other wildlife next spring as the vegetative diversity there skyrockets relative to when it was a crop field. Rain infiltration will improve by the second year, and we will begin to sequester carbon in the soil within just a few years.” Christopher Fretz, a member of Landisville Mennonite Church who helped organize the project, mentioned that after everything has grown, the church would like to build a circular path around the meadow and install a bench or two where people can meditate and pray.

At the age of 82, Dennis Lackey completed his first half marathon, the Philadelphia Half Marathon, in November. “(Running is) good exercise,” said Dennis. “All I need is shorts and a pair of shoes. I appreciate that I’ve been able to do it all these years. the 75 to 79 age group by 25 minutes. It was Dennis’ son, Chris, who proposed the idea of registering for the half marathon with Dennis’ grandchildren Ben and Anna. In 2015, Chris and Dennis completed the 10-mile Broad Street Run in Philadelphia in 2015. “He stayed with me the whole time,” said Dennis. Born and raised in Lancaster Township, Dennis now resides in York when he and his wife, Elizabeth, are not staying at their house in Florida. Between them, they have seven children, 15 grandchildren, and three great grandchildren. Dennis and Elizabeth plan to return to Florida later in December, where they will stay for about six months. “Everyone’s really proud of Dennis,” stated Elizabeth. “He’s such an inspiration for the kids.” One of Dennis’ proudest

moments was placing third in the Red Rose Run when he turned 50 years old. “That, to me, was something special,” he commented. For those who want to start running, Dennis recommends walking first and taking it a little bit at a time. When Dennis began running, he would slowly increase his distance as time progressed. The Philadelphia Half Marathon does not mark the end of the road for Dennis’ running efforts. He typically runs three 5Ks in Florida at the beginning of each year, and he said he hopes to complete them again in 2022.

Wiederseim To Sell Collection Of Ed And Carol Stoudt Of Stoudts’ Black Angus Brewery and Pub Sale To Take Place In Phoenixville On July 24
This is a vintage Wurlitzer juke box. Wiederseim Associates is pleased to offer the private collection of Carol and Ed Stoudt for auction on Saturday, July 24, at 9 a.m. The sale includes the contents of the legendary Stoudt’s Black Angus Restaurant and Brewery in Adamstown, Pa., as well as Ed and Carol’s private collection from their home. After over 30 years in business, Ed and Carol have sold the business and are seeking their next adventure.
The couple opened the Black Angus Antique Mall along with the restaurant and beer garden in the 1980s. Business was good. Why not open a brewery? Based on German beers brewed in the Reinheitsgebot tradition, the couple opened the brewery in 1987, with Carol becoming the first female brewmaster in the U.S. since Prohibition. Through the years, the couple traveled and collected extensively
for their business and home. They assembled items such as Black Forest carved furniture (including two tall case clocks), whimsical circus novelties, Art Nouveau brass chandeliers for the beer hall, carousel horses and an unusual carousel
running rooster, vintage posters, a large collection of German steins, a restored 1932 Auburn Convertible and a 1937 Ford Woody, partially restored, all of which will be in the July 24 sale. “If you’ve ever been to Stoudt’s, you’ll be very familiar with the items in this sale and won’t want to miss it. Their Oktoberfests were the best! Ed in his lederhosen leading the procession, the beer hall with great German food and the German band,” said Ted Wiederseim, auctioneer and owner of Wiederseim Associates Inc. “The Stoudt sale will be our first live sale in over a year, and we’re very excited about getting back to business as usual.” Bidding will be live/in-person as well as live online through Bidsquare, Invaluable and Liveauctioneers. As one of the first buildings constructed at Franklin & Marshall College, Old Main has stood the test of time. To commemorate its place in Lancaster history, the iconic structure has been chosen as the 14th Lancaster Landmark Ornament, an annual fundraiser for Lancaster’s Economic Action for Downtown’s Success (LEADS), the all-volunteer group that provides all city holiday decorations, including the Penn Square Christmas tree and summertime hanging flower baskets in Lancaster. LEADS selected the 165year-old Old Main as this year’s honored landmark. Dedicated in 1856, Old Main embodies the classic details associated with Gothic Revival architecture, including extreme verticality, lancet windows and louvers, battlements, and finials. It was designed by the Baltimore firm Dixon, Balbirnie & Dixon and built by Lancaster contractor Haden Patrick Smith at a cost of $25,136 starting in 1854. The 3D ornaments are renditions of structures that have played a meaningful role in Lancaster’s historic and cultural life, crafted of solid brass plated in 24-karat gold. For the first time, the ornament is offered in full color. It can be used as a tree or window decoration or displayed in the gold foil box it comes in along with a card telling its history. Since 2012, LEADS has invested more than $75,000 to improve the city’s holiday decorations. Proceeds from the sale of the ornaments go toward paying for that investment. Ornaments can be purchased at several Lancaster locations, including BUiLDiNG CHARACTER, 342 N. Queen St., rear warehouses; Festoon at the Firehouse, 202 N. Duke St.; the Turkey Lady at Central Market; and the city Visitors Center on Penn Square. They can also be ordered by calling BUiLDiNG CHARACTER at 717-3947201. Monday Blues is a monthly dance operating on the third Monday of each month at Mulberry Art Studios, 21 N. Mulberry St., Lancaster. Since 1900, the National Audubon Society has conducted a bird census called the Christmas Bird Count with much of the leg work done by volunteers. All levels of birders, including backyard watchers, can help with the citizen science effort. The data collected has been used for studying bird population trends, migration patterns, and conservation policy. Locally, there will be four opportunities to participate in the count. Interested persons are assigned to a team with leaders who are acquainted with their areas. Backyard birders are asked to register with the contact person before the count to determine if their home is within the count circle.

Although the faith-based daily devotional book is intended for individuals in recovery from alcohol or drugs, Greg noted that it is also appropriate for individuals struggling with any addictive behavior and even for those seeking to refresh their faith. From Greg’s time in recovery ministry, he has found that for individuals in recovery, daily encouragement is very important, and people will often turn to not only faithbased daily readings, but also other types of daily readings. “The first 100 days in recovery is very
important, and so I wanted to focus that on the first 100 days (in my book),” he explained. Greg expressed his gratitude to those who helped him write and publish the book. Among them are his wife, Russ Hammer, Frank and Sharon Burnside, Eileen and Zane Emrich, and Bridget and Tim Lease. “Through recovery ministry, I desire to help people, but it absolutely changed my life as well and I have made so many dear friends,” stated Greg. “It’s been an amazing time, and I feel really blessed and humbled to be able to be involved this way.” “The Hope Recovery Devotional: There Is Always Hope With God” was released on Nov. 17 and can be purchased online through Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Walmart.
Faulkner Chevrolet Part Of Angel Tree Program Faulkner Chevrolet and its employees supported the Salvation Army’s Angel Tree program this holiday season by providing gifts for 35 children ages 2 through 16. After the successful collaboration last year, the company decided to support the local children of Lancaster County and to partner with the Salvation Army for the second time in as many years. The Angel Tree program is an annual event in which children ages 2 through 18 can request gifts and the Lancaster community supports the effort to grant their wishes. Children provide their size for a new jacket and request pajamas, tops, bottoms, hats, gloves and scarves to keep them
warm during the winter months. Toys can range from crafts and board games to dolls, stuffed animals and more. The goal is to bring joy to many children during the holiday season. Faulkner Chevrolet general manager Chad Berger reported that many staff members granted wishes for more than one child. Gifts were collected from mid-November until Dec. 1, with a delivery date of Dec. 2. Berger pointed out that the Salvation Army is hosting its Red Kettle Campaign this holiday season and representatives are stationed across Lancaser County and would appreciate any additional support.

Fundraiser Benefits Research Foundation The Lancaster Sweet Shoppe in Lancaster, owned by Jonathan and Jennie Groff, donated all of its proceeds from Sept. 26 to the FRAXA Research Foundation in honor of JT Sardina, the son of Tom and Erin Sardina. More than 100 people visited the shop that day. Tom also advertised the event at his dental practice, which matched all proceeds from the event. The fundraiser garnered more than $15,205 for FRAXA’s work. It also provided opportunities for the Sardinas and other families affected by fragile X syndrome to meet. Organizers hope to
make the event an annual fundraiser for FRAXA. JT, the youngest of four children, was diagnosed with fragile X syndrome in April at 13 months old. Erin, an occupational therapist and a mother of three previous children, knew early on that JT had developmental differences and set out to find answers. After receiving the official fragile X diagnosis, she and Tom discovered FRAXA while researching JT’s condition. By raising money for FRAXA, they hope to help fund treatments and potentially a cure for JT and others with fragile X syndrome.
