he Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that individuals maintain an average of 150 minutes of physical activity every week. According to the CDC, staying active reduces a person’s risk of heart disease, diabetes, and some cancers. There are many ways for people to exercise. Some people do it at home, outside, or at a recreation center. Aside from providing a place for individuals to exercise, recreation centers serve as a thriving hub of activity for children, families, senior citizens, organizations, and more. The Hempfield recCenter, which is located at 950 Church St., Landisville, aims to provide opportunities for people all ages and fitness levels to improve their health and fitness and have a great time while doing
chair yoga, Zumba Gold, line dancing, H2O Pilates, water running, and senior cardio tone. Although these are labeled as senior group classes, people of all ages are welcome to attend. “The Hempfield recCenter values the support and participation of every senior, and we hope our seniors continue to participate and take advantage of these fun, beneficial classes,” stated McGlaughlin. “ We have excellent instructors whom our members love. Girls On The Run Goes Live! BY ANN MEAD ASH
Coming off a successful 5K at Millersville University in November, Katie Sandoe, executive director of Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster, and Jen West, program director, are excited about the 2022 season. “We are looking ahead to spring,” said West. “We are excited to be back to a 10-week season in person.” Indeed, the program hopes to have teams in every Lancaster County school district for the spring semester, and coaches will be needed to help make that happen. Through its Everyone Belongs community campaign, the Hempfield recCenter can provide financial assistance to seniors in the Hempfield area who are interested in becoming active members at the rec. “We feel that communities are only as strong as the health and wellness of their individuals,” said Jamie McGlaughlin, director of fitness and wellness at the Hempfield recCenter. “We encourage everyone to share in all of the exceptional programming and services we have to offer with everyone in the community.” In addition to health benefits, group exercise classes can stimulate the mind and improve social interaction. To add more variety to its already robust class offerings, the Hempfield recCenter recently released a new senior group exercise schedule. Among the classes are
about a lost hermit crab seeking to find his family again. The book was published in October 2020. The response to the book was positive, and Meredith soon envisioned an accompanying spiralbound coloring book with a perforation on each page so the finished pictures could be removed and hung on the refrigerator. She and Madenspacher chose eight illustrations for the coloring book. Meredith reported that the book, which is available at Aaron’s Books in Lititz and several shore locations, did so well that she decided to write a sequel. “People can identify with the character, and Henri has turned into this little moral compass,” said Meredith, who reported that in her first book Henri’s message was about the importance of home.

Local Child Brings Special Needs Charities Together

Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) held its annual “Mane” Event Gala on Oct. 23 at Bent Creek Country Club. The event, which attracted 100 guests, featured a message from Deanna and Matt Adair, whose 7-year-old daughter, Zoey, has a rare genetic condition called Rett syndrome. The disorder, caused by a single gene mutation, has taken away Zoey’s ability to walk, speak, or have full functionality of her hands. During her address, Deanna said therapeutic riding at GMTRC has improved Zoey’s core strength, balance, and use of her hands. Zoey has created close bonds with her horse, Little Lacey; her instructors; and the

volunteers at the barn. Deanna is a physical therapist and learned about GMTRC and its services through her co-workers at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development. Schreiber is responsible for connecting many of its clients to additional resources for continued development. Since joining the Schreiber team five years ago, Deanna has been able to recommend wrap-around services, like GMTRC, to her clients. Schreiber provides outpatient and in-home pediatric therapy for people from birth to age 21, serving more than 4,000 children a year. Therapy services include occupational, physical, speech-language
therapy, and behavioral health services. Zoey has benefited from Schreiber’s resources as well. She attended Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool and Circle of Friends Academy. Schreiber also offers recreation programs, summer camps, and specialized classes for parents. GMTRC and the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development are available to help new families in need and share resources for other organizations. GOTR is a youth development program that encourages confidence, character, care, connection, competence, and contributing to community. One international study found that 85% of girls in the program showed gains in those areas, along with increased long-term physical activity and critical life skills. Registration for the 2022 spring season will open Tuesday, Feb. 1, and the season will begin on Monday, March 7. The GOTR 5K presented
by OAL will be held on Saturday, May 21, at Franklin & Marshall College in Lancaster. The fall 5K at Millersville attracted 1,000 runners, including 400 girls, running buddies, and immediate family members. “If you’re interested in learning more about coaching … we encourage (you) to reach out,” said Sandoe. Teams have also formed at community sites, such as parks and churches. Coaching requires a commitment of up to three hours a week, and Sandoe noted that GOTR coaches need not be teachers. “The majority of sites are schools, but you don’t have to be a teacher to coach,” she said. “We would love that our coaches reflect the community that we serve,” she said, adding that coaches need not even live within the district where they coach. People of all ages are invited to drop in at the church between 10 and 11:30 a.m. for a free Family Christmas Scavenger Hunt. Participants will search for the true meaning of Christmas on the church grounds through a scavenger hunt, complete with prizes. Also included will be a craft, hot chocolate, and toasting marshmallows and making s’mores around a fire
pit. In the case of inclement weather, activities will be adapted for the indoors. At 4 p.m., the church will host a Blue Christmas worship service in the chapel for anyone who has lost a loved one recently or otherwise is experiencing grief and sadness during the holiday season. The service will include seasonal music and reflections to provide encouragement.
