Hempfield To Host Holiday Shoppe
The skills and interests of Hempfield School District students will be on display during the Hempfield Holiday Shoppe, set to take place on Friday, Dec. 5, from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. It will be set up in the Franklin Gymnasium at Hempfield High School, 200 Stanley Ave., Landisville.
Students from the district’s elementary, middle, and high schools participate in the event. The shop is special to those involved, as it extends beyond the processes of classroom learning by providing community interaction and skill-building opportunities all while showcasing student strengths and skill sets.
This year’s event will feature the
largest number of participating mini-businesses in the Holiday Shoppe’s 10-year history, with 22 student-run mini-businesses slated to take part. Crafts that will be sold include holiday ornaments, home decor, hand-painted cookie plates, pine centerpieces, magnets, natural wood tic-tac-toe boards, and notecards and notepads.
Zyler H., a student whose group will sell trees and snowmen this year, shared that he appreciates looking at “all the cool things” at the Holiday Shoppe. “You can shop while you’re there,” he said of the participating students. Shoppers who appreciate the facial expressions on the snowmen at Zyler’s mini-business may want to let him know, as he helped to add faces to the products.

The event was hosted by the East Petersburg Elementary Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) and was sponsored by 17 local businesses, including Son’s Ice Cream, Plaskolite MXL, S. Clyde Weaver, Sporting Valley Turf Farms, Ayers Accounting, S.C. Poultry, and Lancaster County Motors Subaru.
The fun run included optional obstacles, fun music, and an opportunity to “race a firefighter”

Saturday With Santa Event Planned
West Hempfield Fire & Rescue, 3476 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, will present Saturday with Santa on Saturday, Dec. 6, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Photos with Santa will be by donation. Every child will receive a special token from Santa himself.
Also as part of the event, attendees will be able to shop from vendors, mail a letter to the elves at the North Pole, take part in holiday crafts, learn holiday fire safety tips and enjoy free cookies. The event will benefit the volunteer fire department. Funds will be used for new firefighter gear, equipment, training and basic
building maintenance. In addition to this event, Tara Moyer, the department’s event coordinator, was able to host a holiday bus trip to New York City. With profits from the sold-out trip, the department was able to help four families within the Hempfield School District with Thanksgiving meals, assist two families who recently went through tragedy with their Christmas wish list and sponsor 15 additional children to help brighten their holidays.

BREAKOUT MINISTRIES: Senior Pastors

Student Aidan D. is a veteran of the Holiday Shoppe. “I’ve done this for a long time,” he said, noting that one of his favorite parts of the event itself is seeing old friends and especially his sister.
“When I see her,” he noted, “I give her a big hug.” The mini-business operated by Aidan and his classmates will sell snowman ornaments and other ornaments. “I like making all the snowmen,” said Aidan, noting that everyone has a part in making the craft.
“(At) one of the stations, we have to put wooden balls on a metal stick,” he explained, calling the process “fun work.”
school, as well. He is looking forward to selling items such as ornaments, snowmen, reindeer, and painted rocks at the upcoming event.
The students officially began preparing for the event in September. Each year, they hold classroom meetings to decide what to sell, and they review sales from previous years and decide what materials they need to buy. Some students experiment with preparing and selling new products each year via their mini-businesses, and some offer the same types of products from year to year, having found a niche that works for them and that the customers love.
The cash-only event is open to members of the community. The Holiday Shoppe draws students, district staff members, and community members, along with people visiting from outside Lancaster County.

Connery P., another student returning to participate in the Holiday Shoppe, noted that she gets to see friends from current classes and former classes at the event. She enjoys many components of the experience, including “making money and seeing my friends and going shopping.” She also thrives while talking to customers and selling products, which this year will include gnomes that she helped to paint.
Students representing many of the mini-businesses work year round on their projects, incorporating math skills and critical thinking skills into their work and also enhancing interpersonal skills.

from the East Petersburg Fire Company No. 23. The fun run raised just over $30,000 for field trips, enrichment tools and activities, and assemblies. With 47% of children who attend the school being economically disadvantaged, the fundraiser is essential to promoting equitable learning opportunities for all students.
Denise Porambo, an East Petersburg Elementary School alumna who currently works for new sponsor Plaskolite MXL, shared her company’s reason for supporting the event. “Plaskolite MXL was thrilled to be able to help support our local elementary school
and support the students this year,” she stated. “It’s great when a community can come together and provide opportunities for our young children to experience a year full of stimulating learning and have fun while doing it. We were happy to contribute.”

Now I Can
“But we’re helping make miracles happen, and we’re giving families hope. The sooner we can (start working with) kids, the better chance we have of making a change.”
Located at 100 W. Millport Road, Lititz, Now I Can Foundation Northeast aims to provide hope to families with children disabled by disorders like cerebral palsy, spina bifida and other gross motor delays and genetic conditions. The results don’t lie.
“Some of our patients come in not walking. Some leave walking. Some leave running,” said Ebersole. “I love being able to see the change that the therapists can make. I like being able to connect with families. I love when moms cry, because that was me with my daughter. They’re tears of happiness. Until you live it, you can’t understand it. I’ve been in a similar boat for 16 years.”
At Now I Can, pediatric patients condense 57 hours of physical therapy into a three-week period, something like four hours a day, five days a week, depending upon the age of the patient and the condition. Many traditional models offer 40 hours of physical therapy a year45-minute sessions once a week for 48 weeks.
“Children with neurological challenges need repetitions and they need thousands of repetitions,” said Ebersole. “It’s that concentrated effort that makes a difference. It’s teaching the brain new paths to do things in a different way.”

Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. PO Box 500, Mount Joy, PA 17552 TOWNLIVELY.COM

The secret to the Now I Can Foundation’s success is the relatively basic concept of intensive physical therapy. It’s similar to regular physical therapy, only ramped up a few intensity notches.
Now I Can’s intensive physical therapy is designed for patients between the ages of 10 months and 18 years. Partly due to the intensive nature of the therapy, Now I Can treats between two and eight patients during any three-week time frame.
Those patients reside in Lancaster County and the surrounding counties of Lebanon, York, Dauphin and Bucks. Thirty percent of Now I Can’s kids come from outside of Pennsylvania.

Among the 10 individuals that Now I Can employs, two practice physical therapy on a fulltime basis, and two practice it on a part-time basis.
The foundation accepts insurance and makes grants available to families that apply and meet eligibility requirements.
“They are children whose parents have hope for them to be able to reach goals others have thought impossible for them,” said Ebersole. “There are very few providers who use intensive physical therapy around. We’re the only one in the state of Pennsylvania. There’s an extreme need for it. One of the biggest problems we have is that locally people don’t know that we exist. To me, that’s a really big issue. As much as we want to help the world, we really want to help local families.”
Now I Can Foundation Northeast opened its doors in 2022 after borrowing some of its treatment models from Now I Can Foundation in Orem, Utah. Ebersole’s daughter Lauren, now 16, made significant progress in her experience with cerebral palsy during family visits to Now I Can in Utah when she was younger.
“This year is a pivotal year for (Now I Can) because we’ve really been growing,” said Ebersole. “Each year we’ve been growing, and we have tons of space. We’re looking to add more therapists so we can treat more kids. We want to help kids with disabilities reach their full potentials.”
For additional information, go to www .nowican.org.
“When some of our patients come here, they can’t do certain things,” said Ebersole. “When they’re here, we hear kids say, ‘Now I can.’ We hear it from parents too. We have kids coming here needing walkers and then not having to use walkers anymore.”

ENB Announces Letters to Santa Contest
Ephrata National Bank (ENB) has announced the three finalists for its fifth annual Letters to Santa Contest, an initiative created to support and celebrate the nonprofit organizations making a meaningful difference across the communities ENB serves.
Each year, Letters to Santa invites community members to nominate their favorite 501(c)(3) organizations by submitting a letter describing the impact the organization has on the lives of others. Entries include stories of hope, service, education and support, reflecting the many ways nonprofits strengthen Lancaster, Lebanon and Berks counties.
After receiving and reviewing the first 50 eligible submissions, ENB’s internal judging committee evaluated entries based on story impact and the potential impact of a financial gift.
The first entry that has been selected as one of this year’s finalists is One Luv Outreach. Based in Reading, the nonprofit aims to bring “love and light” to the community through weekly family-friendly gatherings and weekly distributions of essentials, including food, clothing, toiletries and toys. The outreach is rooted in Christian faith and emphasizes sharing hope through the Gospel.
The second finalist is Milagro House. Located in Lancaster, Milagro House empowers women with children who are experienc-

ing homelessness through a holistic, two-generational model. Its core programs include residential housing, education, life-skills training and intensive case management. Since education is central, Milagro House supports mothers working on their GED or pursuing postsecondary education to break the cycle of poverty.
Green Meadow Farm in Leola is the third finalist. The farm provides free, individualized mentoring and equine-assisted lessons to children and teens who have experienced trauma or emotional hardship. Through interaction with horses and farm life, the organization aims to bring healing, trust, responsibility and renewal, all grounded in Christian faith.
Community members are encouraged to visit the ENB Letters to Santa Contest Page at https://santa.epnb .com to read the finalists’ letters, view accompanying photos and cast their vote for the organization they believe deserves a special holiday gift. Public voting will remain open through Monday, Dec. 8, and the organization receiving the highest number of votes will be named the first prize winner.
This year’s prizes are $15,000, first place; $5,000, second place; and $3,000, third place.
Winners will be notified on Tuesday, Dec. 9, and an official announcement will be shared on ENB’s social media channels by early January 2026.
Named to the Team of the Week

Bird Club Posts Program, Meeting
The Lancaster County Bird Club (LCBC) has posted an upcoming special program and meeting.
The program will take place on Wednesday, Dec. 10, from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area Visitor Center, 100 Museum Road, Stevens.

Ted Nichols, LCBC president, will present “It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year - Christmas Bird Count Season!”
The Christmas Bird Count (CBC), the world’s longest-running citizen science survey, began in 1900 as a new tradition to replace Christmas “side hunts,” where participants competed to see how many birds they could kill. The Lititz Christmas Bird Count, which covers Middle Creek and the surrounding area, dates to 1905, even before Middle Creek existed.

Nichols, who has been the compiler for the Lititz CBC since 2017, will share how the CBC brings bird enthusiasts together to celebrate conservation and community. He will also tell about the CBC’s origins, its influence on birding in Lancaster County and beyond, and how bird occurrences in this area have evolved since the first count was conducted.
The program is free and open to the public. For information, call Nichols at 717-856-3851.
The club will meet on Thursday, Dec. 11, at 7 p.m. at the North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster. Jeff Larkin and graduate students from Indiana University of Pennsylvania will present “Ornithology Research Update: Forest Birds.”
Larkin will introduce two of his graduate students, who will report on their master’s level research on ovenbirds and whip-poor-wills. Colin Lynch will present on his studies of the effects of forest structure on ovenbird abundance using LiDAR data. Nick Logan will discuss his use of autonomous recording units and a machine learning classifier to study the relationship between whip-poor-will abundance and time since prescribed fire. These research findings are part of a long-term ongoing effort to better understand the factors that affect the occupancy and abundance of at-risk species and diverse eastern forest bird communities.
Larkin is a biology professor at Indiana University of Pennsylvania and an American Bird Conservancy forest bird adviser.
The meeting is free and open to the public. For more information, call 717-856-3851 or 717-725-2717.

The chorale presents two programs each year - one in the spring and one at Christmas. Book Launch
Marichelle Roque-Lutz, a resident of New Holland, has written “The House by the Beach.” The novel, based on Roque-Lutz’s family on her mother’s side, mixes fiction and truth and is set in Cuyo, an island in the Philippines.

For more information about the LCBC, visit www.lancasterbirdclub. org, www.facebook.com/ lancasterbirdclub, or www.instagram.com/ lancasterbirdclub.
The story spans four generations, starting in the final years of Spanish rule and ending in the 1960s, and is a portrait of a family’s love, sacrifice, and enduring struggle to make sense of its past.
At the center of the story is Carlos, a man whose actions leave a trail of
pain, misery, and consequences that his family has to carry. Lupe, a daughter who immigrates to the U.S., endeavors to write her family’s story and deal with her father’s complexities as she builds a new life in Manheim Township.
“The House by the Beach” is on its second printing. People may purchase copies of the book during a book launch and signing at Community Mennonite Church, 325 W. Orange St., Lancaster, on First Friday, Dec. 5, starting at 7 p.m.
