The meal must go on. Not wanting the Mountville area to lose its public Thanksgiving dinner when the original hosts retired 14 years ago, Greg and Dolly Workman of The Workman Funeral Homes Inc. stepped up. Along with their children, Holly and Reilly, the Workmans solicited food donations from friends and family members, prepared the food, and happily served full meals to whomever showed up. The Workmans have continued their service, and every year the number of attendees has grown. In 2019, they served 175 people via sit-down meals, takeout, and delivery. “ExtraGive” Is Extraordinarily Important BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
n a year when nonprofit organizations experienced significant losses of income opportunities, the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive) hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF) is of particular importance. For 24 hours, beginning at 12:00:01 a.m.

on Friday, Nov. 20, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits at www.extragive.org. To inspire generous donations, LCCF has solicited sponsors for more than $500,000 in matching funds and other prizes. “Every year we have a stretch goal. That allows people to ‘give extra,’” explained LCCF communications
manager Aaron Spangler. With the assistance of the stretch goal, last year’s ExtraGive raised $10.9 million, for a total of $53.5 million since the event’s inception in 2012. The hope is that the 2020 ExtraGive will do as well or better. Spangler noted that when the shutdown was announced in March, the ExtraGive
organizers knew that this year’s event would be different. “We were a little unsure about how everything was going to go,” Spangler commented, “but we have more sponsors this year than ever before.” More than 500 nonprofits will participate in the upcoming ExtraGive. To qualify, potential

In typical years, about 80 to 100 ExtraGive social events are held across Lancaster County during the 24 hours. However, this year, LCCF is requiring
organizations to adhere to COVID-19 mitigation guidelines, so Spangler anticipates fewer socials. To encourage participants to adapt, LCCF will award a creativity prize after the event, and it has posted downloadable photo props and social media images that individuals may use at home at www.extragive.org/info/downloads.
“At its core, ExtraGive has been a digital event,” Spangler said. “From a pure mechanics standpoint, nothing has changed from past years, but it’s no secret that it won’t feel quite the same this year.” Rather than host an in-person countdown to the close of the event, LCCF will present a live webcast from
5 p.m. to midnight. It will feature entertainment and spotlights of participating nonprofits so viewers may find new causes to support. A special broadcast with WGAL and Choice Live from Lititz will air from 9 to 10 p.m. Community members are invited to submit videos and post on social media with #IGiveExtra to say why
they are participating in the ExtraGive for inclusion in the webcast. Submission information is available at www.extragive.org/info/extra givecast. “Even though we can’t be together, we want to build the ExtraGive CAST together,” Spangler remarked. “We want folks to really feel like they’re

Women’s Club Plans Cookie Sale The Millersville Woman’s Club will hold its 24th annual cookie sale on Friday, Dec. 4, and Saturday, Dec. 5, at John Herr’s Village Market, 25 Manor Ave., Millersville. Presentation To Focus On Heirloom Seeds The Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County will hold its monthly meeting and presentation on Thursday, Nov. 19, at 1 p.m. The meeting will be held at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road, Lancaster. CDC
guidelines requiring masks and social distancing will be implemented. Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum seed project coordinator Joanne Ranck Dirks will share about heirloom seeds. Topics will include preserving these

WSM Launches Rescue Mission Food Drive BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
“We’ve seen a lot of new faces. Our numbers have gone up about 20%,� Water Street Mission (WSM) president Jack Crowley said, speaking about the increase in people the organization has provided with food assistance this year. “Hunger-Free Lancaster is seeing that the numbers are going up across the community. Churches are stepping up to make sure those (organizations that) are here year-round aren’t getting overwhelmed.� Even with the additional help from community food pantries, WSM serves 400 meals a day in its dining hall and provides boxes of groceries to about 600 households every week. Crowley said he anticipates distributing more than 1,000 boxes for Thanksgiving and wants to ensure each one includes a turkey. WSM will not offer Christmas boxes, Crowley noted, as Lancaster County Project for the Needy has taken on that service. WSM is a part of Hunger-Free Lancaster as well as LanCo MyHome, the Lancaster County Homeless Coalition.
More than 70 organizations are involved in serving poor and homeless individuals and families in Lancaster County. Three meals a day, seven days a week are available free of charge in Lancaster city, Crowley said. That enables WSM to focus on serving its long-term residents, those who stay in the emergency shelter, and those who participate in the outreach program. “We can have more than 200 people staying with us,� Crowley said. WSM had opened Providence Shelter this past winter, expanding WSM’s emergency housing capacity. The facility has a top-of-the-line air filtration system like those used in hospitals. It was installed because it works with the HVAC system to remove odors and promote the general health of occupants. It turns out that it is also what is recommended for COVID-19 control. Additionally, single beds rather than bunk beds were purchased to honor the dignity of guests. The beds can be spread out for social distancing. “We’ve experienced God’s providence in some of the design features,� Crowley commented. “We’ve been
able to serve everybody that’s needed us so far. ‌ We will find creative ways to address (greater needs).� To ensure that WSM is ready to feed its guests and clients this winter, WSM launched its annual Rescue Mission Food Drive (RMFD) on Nov. 1. The organization will make a special effort to collect 120,000 pounds of nonperishable food items by Sunday, Dec. 20. A list of suggested items has been posted at http://rescuemissionfooddrive.org/. Glass containers are discouraged. Donations may be dropped off at Boscov’s at Park City, Javateas, the Lancaster city locations of Murray Insurance, and the Lancaster County locations of Sheetz, Weis Markets, AAA Central Penn, and M&T Bank. Large quantities may be delivered to the WSM food dock, 210 S. Prince St., Lancaster, on Mondays and Fridays from 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Financial contributions may be made at https://wsm.org/make -an-impact/donate. Kraybill Mennonite Plans Craft Fair The second annual Christmas at Kraybill Craft Fair and Celebration will be held on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Kraybill Mennonite School (KMS), 598 Kraybill Church Road, Mount Joy. Since it opened its doors in September 2011, Bird-inHand Stage, 2715 Old Philadelphia Pike, Bird-inHand, has been partnering with Blue Gate Musicals with the goal of providing wholesome, high-quality dramas and Broadway-style musicals. The year 2021 will be no exception. The theater company has announced the return of the musical “Josiah for President,” in which an Amish farmer runs for president of the United States, and the debut of See Bird-In-Hand Stage pg 8
distributing over 1,200 boxes of turkey dinners with all the trimmings to low-income families throughout Lancaster County. In addition to this year’s partnership with the United Way of Lancaster, the LCPN will also continue the partnership with
Elizabethtown Community Homeless Outreach Services, Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), the Columbia Lions, and Solanco Food Pantry to provide meals to families in designated areas. The LCPN is still seeking donations to offset the cost of

STRIVING FOR A MORE HUMANE COMMUNITY.
The 34th annual Lancaster County Project for the Needy (LCPN) holiday dinner giveaway has partnered with the United Way of Lancaster and UPMC Pinnacle Health to provide a complete holiday meal for families throughout Lancaster County on Saturday, Dec. 19. Due to COVID-19 and the Department of Health’s safety guidelines, the process for this year’s annual event will be different. The holiday meal distribution will take place by delivery only. There will be no pickup location at the Barnstormers’ stadium. UPMC has partnered with LCPN to provide COVID-19 health screenings to volunteers. Families can preregister for this event by calling the United Way’s 211 or 855-5675341 from Friday, Nov. 27, through Friday, Dec. 11. Registration is required no later than Dec. 11. A volunteer will deliver the holiday meal to registered participants on the morning of Dec. 19. The project anticipates

She noted that her family eats their Thanksgiving dinner at the church, too, but they tend to wait until the evening. “We have fun (serving),” Dolly added. “(By the end of the day), we’re so tired, but it’s such a rewarding thing.” For pandemic-related safety reasons, meals will be delivered to Hershey Mill Home, Faith Friendship Villa, and the GateHouse homes in Mountville and Marietta. In previous years, residents of those facilities had attended the Thanksgiving dinners in person. Dining reservations are not required but are appreciated. A few volunteers help to peel potatoes and pick the meat from the turkey bones, but the Workmans do most of the cooking themselves. “I make 10 gallons of homemade gravy from scratch,” Dolly commented. The Workmans prepare a sumptuous repast, complete with 22 very large turkeys, 100 pounds of mashed potatoes, two bushels of sweet potatoes, peas, corn, fruit cocktail, and pies. Martin’s donates 30 dozen dinner rolls as well as 48 pounds of bread cubes, which Dolly makes into stuffing. The Pilot Club of Central Pennsylvania, of which Dolly is a member, contributes to the meal too. The Workmans refuse to accept any monetary donations from diners. “We want people to eat freely,” Dolly explained. “Everybody needs to have a meal for Thanksgiving. Nobody is turned away.” After a year filled with the isolation of a pandemic shutdown, the anxiety of a tumultuous economy, and the stress of a presidential election, the Workmans are especially committed to hosting a Thanksgiving dinner. “A nice meal just makes everybody feel good,” Dolly remarked. With COVID-19 guidelines at the forefront, a socially distanced meal will be held at Central Manor Church, 387 Penn St. (Route 999), Washington Boro, on Thursday, Nov. 26. Takeouts and local delivery will be available at 11 a.m., and the sit-down meal will

Formerly known as Farnum Park, the newly renovated Culliton Park, located along South Water Street in Lancaster, will open on Friday, Nov. 20, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 2 p.m. The public is invited to visit the park after the ribbon cutting in adherence with state-mandated COVID-19 procedures. Planning for the renovation of Culliton Park began in the fall of 2017. In early 2018, neighbors of the park selected artist Matthew Geller to collaborate with landscape architects RGS on renovating the public space. Geller made multiple visits to connect with neighbors of the park and collaborated with local manufacturer Shrock Fabrication to create a unique fence around the playground area. Eleanor Grebinger turned 100 on Sept. 27. She celebrated at a small gathering with her family. Eleanor was the wife of the late Willis Grebinger, who died in May 2010. They both attended Moody Bible Institute in Chicago and were married on July 23, 1946, in the African bush. They served as missionaries in West Africa for 27 years. Willis and Eleanor are the parents of Anne Postles and Jane Williams. There are three grandchildren and three great- Eleanor Grebinger celebrated grandchildren. her 100th birthday on Sept. 27 Eleanor worked at a small gathering. at Watt & Shand department store for three and grandson Brett. BOYS’ SOCCER Hunter Green and Nate Schwartz scored in the first half, giving Hempfield a 2-0 lead in Saturday’s (Nov. 7) District Three Class 4A semifinal match played at Eagle View Middle School in Mechanicsburg. The eighth-seeded Knights upset topseeded Wilson three days earlier with Green scoring one goal and Schwartz adding two for a 3-2 upset win. On Saturday at CV, there was not another upset left for this tenacious Knights’ team, however. Dan Erickson scored twice in the second half and completed his hat trick with a goal 20 seconds into the second overtime, giving the Eagles (15-1) a 3-2 victory. Hempfield’s (8-5) defense held CV scoreless until the 66th minute. Erickson scored the equalizer with only four minutes remaining in regulation.

The District Three Class 4A girls’ volleyball trophy is staying with Hempfield. On Tuesday, November 10, the Knights defeated Wilson 3-1 (25-16, 23-25, 25-19, 25-19) to win their second straight district championship, doing so on their home court. The victory puts Hempfield (16-0) into the PIAA 4A state playoffs while Wilson’s season ends at 15-3. Emma Bitner registered four aces and 29 assists. Ashley Weaver collected 11 kills while Allison Cummings added 14 digs. Morgan Minnich, Joslene Morgan, and Weaver each had one block. Hempfield reached the championship match with a 3-1 victory over a Cumberland Valley on Saturday, Nov. 7. The topseeded Knights hosted the match, taking a 2-0 lead with 25-17 and 25-21 scores in the first two sets. The Eagles stayed alive with a 25-23 victory before the Knights clipped their wings 25-15. FOOTBALL There is the show business phrase, “Always leave them wanting more.� Translate that into the unforgettable performance of a high school quarterback - one who wraps up his junior year and leaves everyone anticipating more as a senior - and you have the kind of night Cameron Harbaugh had against Cocalico on Friday, November 6. The Hempfield junior threw for 300 yards and four touchdowns as the Knights won a wild contest at home, 51-28. “He was confident and comfortable and you could see it in his play,� said head coach George Eager. “Cam has worked very hard to be where he is.� The Eagles (4-4) who had averaged 36 points over their previous three games, put up three touchdowns in the second quarter. Hempfield (4-4) responded by scoring four touchdowns, including a 48-yard fumble return by senior defensive back Shaun Hammer. Leading 34-28 going into the second half, the Knights blanked the Eagles the rest of the way. “Our defense did a tremendous job in the second half, shutting down an explosive offense,� Eager said. “In the half we grabbed two more turnovers - one of them was while they were driving and on our 25-yard line. That was huge.�
Harbaugh, who also ran for a touchdown, distributed the passing yardage among five different receivers. Millersville Turkey Trot Set The Millersville Turkey Trot will return for its 48th year, but it will look a little different in 2020. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 5K race will be conducted virtually from Sunday, Nov. 22, through Sunday, Nov. 29. Participants can run or walk a 5K course during Thanksgiving week and can report their times via email. Results must be reported by noon on Monday, Nov. 30, to be eligible for the awards. Awards for 2020 will be gift cards based on the number of total participants. Registration is available at www.millersvilleturkeytrot.com. There is an entry fee, and each participant will receive a T-shirt if the registration is received by the mail-in deadline of Friday, Nov. 20, or the online deadline of Thursday, Nov. 26. The event is run by the Cy Fritz Foundation, a group named in the honor of the former Millersville University cross-country and track and field coach.
