Imagine four children ranging in age from kindergarten to third grade so enraptured by an hourlong presentation that they are surprised when it is over. What could grab and hold their attention? Why, music, of course, but not just any music. The four children were in a SWAN (Scaling Walls A Note at a Time) afterschool class at Wickersham Elementary, and the presentation was made by Lancaster Symphony Orchestra (LSO) concertmaster Luigi Mazzocchi and assistant concertmaster Nina Zubadi. The pair performed a Leclair sonata for two violins. Following the performance, the musicians spent time talking to the students and answering questions. his year’s Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF), is set for Friday, Nov. 19. Beginning at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19, individuals may make donations via credit card to participating nonprofits serving this region at www.extragive.org. The more than 500 participating organizations will receive a prorated portion of the $500,000 stretch pool, with an additional $50,000 in prizes available. For the first time, Geneva Bakery and the Real Life Church of God, both located at 6030 Lemon St., East Petersburg, will host an ExtraGive event to support these three nonprofits. Some people might wonder how these three organizations are connected. Linda Rannels, owner of Geneva Bakery, is a member of the East Petersburg Events Committee; her daughter, Libby Rannels, has volunteered at RRWC for the past five years; and Hempfield Power Packs Project has a pickup location inside Geneva Bakery. This free event will start at Geneva Bakery at noon on Nov. 19.
Tracie Young, founder of RRWC, will bring crafts and coloring books along with a possum, a skunk, a vulture, an owl, a snake, two box turtles, a great horned owl, and a groundhog. Hempfield Power Packs Project will provide free food samples, and the East Petersburg Events Committee will show the movie “Over the Hedge” at 7 p.m. The event will also feature giveaways of gift baskets donated by some restaurants and businesses within East Petersburg. Those who attend are encouraged to bring nonperishable food items for Hempfield Power Packs Project, specifically peanut butter, boxed macaroni and cheese, soup, pasta,

and canned vegetables. Geneva Bakery will be open until 7 p.m., and Linda plans to sell some animalthemed sweets. “It’s going to be fun and educational at the same time,” said Libby. “With Raven Ridge, we just love educating people and seeing people’s faces light up when they see the animals.” “There will be a ton of free stuff to do with your kids,” stated Linda. “All three of the organizations are close to our hearts.” Attendees who are not vaccinated are encouraged to wear a mask. Sponsored by United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS), the UDS gift wrap booth will celebrate its 50th anniversary this year. The booth will operate daily in the former Sears wing of Park City Center from Black Friday, Nov. 26, through Christmas Eve, Friday, Dec. 24. Booth hours are from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 4 p.m. on Sundays.

Homes For The Holidays BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For more than half a century, people have been peeking into the homes of Marietta residents at Christmastime. The 55th annual Marietta Candlelight Tour of Homes will continue this tradition on Sunday, Dec. 5, from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. “We have eight homeowners who have graciously opened their homes and decorated them in their own style for Christmas,” said Jason Spickler, who is co-chair of the tour along with Rebecca Baltozer. The tour is hosted by the Marietta Restoration
Associates (MRA), who operate the Old Town Hall Museum, 3 W. Walnut St., and the Union Meeting House, 80 N. Waterford Ave., which will be part of the tour as well. A tree lighting and an appearance by Santa and Mrs. Claus will take place at the Old Town Hall Museum at 5 p.m. Throughout the day, the Union Meeting House will feature dance demonstrations by World Dance Lancaster as well as Christmas music played on an 1847 Henry Knauff pipe organ. The site will also feature a Make-A-Wish Christmas tree. Spickler noted that this
year’s tour includes at least three homes that have never been featured before. “We try to get a variety of homes,” he said. “That’s why people come back year after year, because they are not going to see the same things.” A search committee begins looking for homes to feature early in the year, he said, and although some homes have been featured in the tour more than once, the committee tries not to revisit a site for at least five years. Tourgoers will receive a booklet as their ticket, and it will include a map of the tour stops along with information

Participants can park and board the bus in the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot, 1177 River Road, or can park in town and board anywhere along the route. The tour is a fundraiser for the MRA, which has worked to restore many of the public buildings in Marietta. “Our organization has been instrumental over the years in helping to preserve historic landmarks in town,” Spickler stated. He added that although Marietta is full of older homes, the tour offers a chance to see a variety of places. “We have homes in town that are modern. We have homes that were built in the early 1800s. It’s really an eclectic mix,” he said. “It’s about how the homeowners choose to decorate their homes and what their style is. You never know what they’re going to surprise you with when you walk in the door.” Advance tickets are available for the tour at several locations, which are listed at www.mariettarestoration.org. There is a discount for purchasing tickets in advance, but tickets can also be purchased at the event in the Donegal Intermediate School parking lot; at the First National Bank building, 100 W. Market St.; or at the Old Town Hall Museum.

The Fight Hunger food drive will run from Friday, Nov. 12, through Monday, Nov. 29. Feeding Pennsylvania Sets Fundraising Campaign Feeding Pennsylvania is teaming up with PA Eats and Breweries in PA this November for a monthlong fundraising campaign, Hops for Hunger, to raise funds for Pennsylvanians facing hunger. As part of the inaugural Hops for Hunger program, people are invited to visit participating breweries during the month of November, and the businesses will donate proceeds from a beer of their choice, host special events, and more to engage their guests about the issue of hunger in Pennsylvania. Events will be announced and updated at www.feedingpa.org/hops forhunger. Local participants include The Vegetable Hunter, Harrisburg; Lovedrafts Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; Pour Man’s Brewing Company, Ephrata; Moo-Duck Brewery, Elizabethtown; Our Town Brewery, Lancaster; Wolf Brewing Co., Mechanicsburg; and Desperate Times Brewery, Carlisle.
The concept of the campaign came from Feeding Pennsylvania’s community manager, Corinne Foster, who doubles as a Central Pennsylvania food blogger, Fosterthefoodie. Through her food blog, Foster incorporates different ways of partnering with local restaurants on promotions that encourage individuals to support local restaurants while raising awareness and
funds to support antihunger efforts. This oncelocalized approach eventually sparked an idea to take these efforts statewide. PA Eats joined the campaign because of its mission of showcasing Pennsylvania food culture. Breweries in Pennsylvania also played a key role in outreach for the inaugural event, with a combined total of more than 60,000 followers on
Facebook and Instagram. The plan is to use these platforms to share upcoming events, specials, and promotions for the Hops for Hunger campaign to help promote this year’s participating breweries. Breweries that are interested in participating can join the campaign throughout November. “The holiday spirit comes once a year, and this show has it,” said Kathy Yoder, describing the Root’s Christmas Show. The show will be held on Saturday, Nov. 20, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature more than 250 vendors. “ We particularly like to accept artisans and people who make their own products,” noted Yoder, special events manager for Root’s. Items for sale will include holiday décor, gift baskets, candles, baby items, dog clothing and treats, spray paint art, toys, leather goods, braided rugs and much more.
“Santa Claus - and I think he’s the real Santa - will be here between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m.,” Yoder stated. “He and Mrs. Santa will walk among the crowd and give out candy canes and goodwill.” Food will be available to purchase, including soft pretzels, french fries, baked goods, soup, hamburgers, barbecue chicken, ice cream and more. “There are also tons of door prizes all day long,” Yoder commented. The Hempfield girls’ volleyball team took home the District Three Class 4A championship trophy for a third consecutive year. The Black Knights (18-0) defeated Cumberland Valley 3-0 on Saturday evening at Dallastown with seniors Nyah Smiley, Joslene Morgan and Camille De La Torre helping to lead their team to a 25-17 comeback win in the opening set. The Knights topped the
Eagles (15-2) by a close 25-20 margin in the second set and completed the sweep, holding off the pesky Eagles 25-19 in the third and final set. De La Torre finished with five kills, and two aces as Hempfield won its 14th overall district trophy. Allison Cummings racked up 15 digs. Sophomore setter Melody Butzer dished out 22 assists and registered kills Hempfield took its district title to the PIAA 4A state playoffs where the Knights

The Hempfield side promptly defeated U-ville 3-0, handing the Longhorns only their third defeat all year while the Black Knights improved to 19-0, earning a ticket to the state quarterfinals. Having done away with the District One third-place team, the Knights’ quarterfinals round opponent would be WPIAL runner up Shaler. Playing on its home court, Hempfield topped Unionville 25-19, 25-20 and 25-21. Morgan registered 11 kills while De La Torre served up four aces to lead the team. Butzer led the team in assists with 36 while Cummings again topped her teammates in digs (10) and Sarah Hess notched four blocks. BOYS’ SOCCER The season came to an end for the boys’ soccer team on Tuesday, November 9 in the opening round of the PIAA Class 4A state playoffs. The Black Knights, who entered the states as the number four seed from District Three,
traveled to Western Pennsylvania to face Seneca Valley. The District Seven champion Raiders remained unbeaten (15-0-1) with a 3-0 triumph over the Knights (12-71) with Joey Coon scoring a hat trick. As their season concluded, the Hempfield squad found a
number of its members named as L-L League all-stars. Seniors Luke Kramer, Andrew Potter and Gunnar Swanger were named as first teamers in Section One. Second team all-stars included junior Ben Ammon along with seniors Nate Leisure and Nate Swartz.

It was a really upbeat and happy time.” The presentation came about through a partnership between LSO and SWAN, with the visit being part of LSO’s Stand Partner Community Program, in which LSO makes a concerted effort to serve the community. SWAN is a free one-hour music program provided to School District of Lancaster (SDoL) students ages 6 to 18. The organization currently offers music lessons through several SDoL schools and at the Youth Intervention Center (YIC). SWAN is a nonprofit organization specifically serving children affected by parental incarceration. Since the children play ukuleles, it was natural for them to compare their instruments with the musicians’ violins. “(The students) saw that the violin has two holes to let the sound out and that both (instruments) have bridges, but they are different in shape and size. Both have four strings and a similarshaped body,” shared Vuolo. “They were describing the instruments with good adjec-
tives, and they created good conversation.” The visiting musicians then gave the students an opportunity to play with them. “One of the most magical moments was when the symphony musicians had our children start plucking two notes repeatedly (on their ukuleles), and then the musicians started to play a folk dance,” said Vuolo. “They really did sound beautiful together.” Vuolo is especially looking forward to a return visit by Mazzocchi and Zubadi. “(LSO) will be sending the same musicians to the same classes multiple times throughout the year,” she explained, “so the school children will be able to create a relationship with them.” On Friday, Nov. 19, SWAN will take part in the Extraordinary Give (ExtraGive), hosted by the Lancaster County Community Foundation (LCCF). The 24-hour event, which is the the largest per-capita giving day in the nation, will begin at 12:00:01 a.m. on Nov. 19. Servant Stage will host its First Look Extravaganza, a virtual theatrical celebration, on Friday, Nov. 19, at 7 p.m. The live broadcast will feature more than 300 local performers in both live and prerecorded performances. During the event, Servant Stage will announce its 2022 season of shows and audiences will be treated to preview performances. The 2022 season will feature major Broadway musicals, classic plays, and musical revues, with five mainstage productions and six youth productions. The First Look Extravaganza will also feature a celebration of
the past year of performances, which will include highlights from Servant Stage’s recent productions of “Amazing Grace,” “Don’t Rock the Jukebox,” and “Daddy Long Legs.” There is no charge for the performance, and the livestream will be available to watch on Servant Stage’s Facebook and YouTube channels as well as www.servantstage.org.
