Wayside Presbyterian Church, 600 Stony Battery Road, Landisville, is excited about its Family Ministry activities.

The trio overseeing the children and youths comprises Sonja Eckert, Rachel Holsey, and Michelle Hess. Eckert, who is the director of Family Ministry, has worked with Wayside for 13 years. She is supported by Holsey, who oversees youths in grades six through 12, and Hess, the nursery coordinator. The trio has an extensive slate of fall activities planned for community families with a focus on opportunities to grow, connect, and have fun together following Jesus.

The church’s midweek program, IGNITE, began on Oct. 1 and meets on Wednesdays from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Its goal is to provide a welcoming space for children and youths to build friendships, enjoy engaging

Sarah Zeitler wants to get people talking about some of life’s most basic necessities while making sure everyone has access to them.
The Lancaster woman is the local face of I Support the Girls, a national nonprofit that collects bras, underwear and feminine hygiene products for girls and women in need. What began for Zeitler
to donate gently used bras has grown into a mission she calls both energizing and deeply personal.
“I’m very focused on changing the conversation,” says Zeitler, who has two teenage daughters, ages 14 and 16.
“Why don’t we talk about pads and tampons? ... I tell my girls, ‘You don’t have to be embarrassed by this topic.’ I want to help people who don’t have access to products most of us take for granted.”

“I think I am most proud of the work that we have done over the years and how we have been able to expand our services and our footprint to serve more people,” reflected Dennis Steiner, president and CEO of VisionCorps, who recently announced his retirement. “That is what our mission is - to empower people who are blind to achieve independence. To me, that is what we

Zeitler discovered I Support the Girls in late 2024. When she realized Lancaster no longer had an active chapter, she quickly stepped up. The hyperlocal aspect drew her in.
“I like that the bras you’re giving are not going to women in another state,” she said. “They’re going right back to local women. I also wanted to be sure these bras were going to women in need who were going to use them.”
I Support the Girls began 10 years ago when founder Dana Marlowe started the organization in the Washington, D.C., area. From one donated bra, the
organization has grown to more than 40 million products donated over the past decade.
Locally, Zeitler collects donations and works with partners including Second Grace, which supports young single mothers, and River’s Place, a free clothing closet at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Manheim Township. She has also begun reaching out to local doctor’s offices, especially plastic surgeons, to encourage women undergoing breast surgery to donate their gently used bras.
At her job as a product manager at Armstrong,
she regularly collects donations. And thanks to I Support the Girls national partnerships with major retailers like Victoria’s Secret, she receives shipments of new bras to distribute.
“I like to make sure there is diversity in what I’m giving away,” she said. “I want to have everything from sports bras to special occasions, from tween sizes to larger sizes.”
worry about having the right bras to go to work and feel professional or feel confident in their own skin. This is something I’m very passionate about, and doing this work literally energizes me.”
She notes that her involvement in the project has raised her own awareness about community needs.
“Think about victims of domestic violence,” she said. “The police often collect undergarments as evidence, and these women are sent home without underwear. ... Girls literally miss school because they don’t have the proper hygiene products.”

Her work has become a family effort. Her daughters, August and Citizen, pitch in with everything from social media posts to sorting donations. They’ve also joined her at training sessions offered by the national nonprofit, turning the project into a shared mission of empowerment.
It’s also important to Zeitler that donations stay in the local area.
This year, Zeitler received a grant to create a permanent collection site in Lancaster. While she’s still searching for the right location, she continues to collect donations at her home and through temporary community partners.

are here for.”
Steiner, who started as a VisionCorps case manager in 1984, has 42 years of experience working in the field of blind and low-vision services, including 17 years as president and CEO of VisionCorps. He was succeeded by Megan Tomsheck effective Oct. 31.
“I have been blessed to have a great leadership team here. Many of them have been here for quite some time,” Steiner noted.
“Megan is an 18-year employee. I have a good mix of longevity and newer people. They are all committed to our mission. They are all passionate about their work and a good team to lead.”
Steiner was responsible for helping to establish new services during his tenure. His accomplishments include introducing youth programming to the agency and mentoring young people; expanding VisionCorps from one facility in Lancaster to additional rehabilitation and employment sites in Adams, Chester, Lebanon and York counties; and increasing the focus of rehabilitation services to include new technology offerings such as smart glasses, magnifiers and apps.
“Technology has been the game changer for people who are blind and vision impaired,” said Steiner, who is legally blind. “(There is) software that allows the iPhone or computer or read to you what is on the screen.”
He added that people can use their phones to shop for
any items that they need, including food from the grocery store. “(Technology) has opened up a lot of doors and opportunities for the blind and the visually impaired community,” said Steiner. “I can’t imagine living without my iPhone or computer because it allows a greater degree of independence.”
Steiner and his wife, Candy, reside in Lancaster Township. Steiner said he is looking forward to spending more time with his family and two grandchildren, but he added that he also plans to continue to advocate for the vision impaired.
“I am going to be involved with the agency at some level, doing some public policy work or whatever Megan asks me to do. You don’t spend your whole career and just walk away from an organization like this,” he shared. “I haven’t lost the passion for the work, but it’s time for me to step down and spend some more time with family. I felt like now was the right time.”
“Many people ask me, ‘Why did you stay at one place for so long?’ I love the organization, and I love the community,” he added. “Lancaster, central York and Chester counties are great places to raise a family. VisionCorps has given as much to me as I have given to them. It’s been a great relationship.”
Having been a visually impaired leader of an organization, Steiner has also set an example for others. “I am a CEO who happens to be blind,” said Steiner

Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present “Thanksgiving Exposed: The True Story of the Pilgrims” on Friday, Nov. 21, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the school. Guests will select a specific time slot for a living history walk-through tour that will take about one hour. This live re-enactment of the true story of the Pilgrims is based on primary sources, including the original manuscript recorded by William Bradford, governor of the Plymouth settlement. Thanksgiving Exposed takes guests first through a timeline that starts with Jesus Christ being the focal point for all of history. The story traces the Gospel from Jesus to the Apostle Paul and onward. Guests briefly learn about the impact of historical figures and events like King John and the signing of the Magna Carta, John Wycliffe translating the Bible into English, and Martin Luther and his 95 Theses. The tour moves on to the Reformation and Elizabeth I and James I, when persecution began for reformers in England, setting the stage for the rise of the Separatists.

Guests then move through six stations that highlight God’s hand in establishing the Plymouth Colony in New England.
The stations tell the Pilgrim story from the Pilgrims’ beginnings in Scrooby, England, through their escape to Holland and their voyage to the New World. “Thanksgiving Exposed” enables guests to witness how the seeds of Christian self-government were planted and later gave rise to the United States of America.
The event is free and open to the public, but reservations are required by visiting www.day springchristian.com.
Many of the earlier time slots are full, but a waitlist is available for those

who do not receive their desired time slot. For more information, call the school at 717-285-2000.
One hundred years after its cornerstone was placed, the historic Chestnut Hill Church building at 344 W. Chestnut St., Lancaster, has been revitalized. Community Fellowship Church (CFC) has completed a 10-month renovation of the landmark and will celebrate the grand opening of its second location with its first public service on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 9 a.m. CFC will also host a Worship & Prayer Night on Thursday, Nov. 20, from 7 to 8 p.m. and a community open house on Saturday, Nov. 22, from 9 to 11 a.m., both open to the public. Guests are invited to tour the building, meet the pastors, and enjoy live worship. Coffee and refreshments will be served during the open house.
The $4 million renovation, led by Arthur Funk & Sons

Construction, preserved the building’s architectural beauty while equipping it for modern ministry. The 25,000-square-foot space features upgraded HVAC, security, and audiovisual systems; refreshed gathering areas; a new 75-seat balcony; brightened stainedglass windows; and new classrooms for children.
Nathan White, who relocated from Missouri to help launch the new location, will be the main teaching pastor at Chestnut Hill. The story behind the project is one of God’s timing and provision. As Chestnut Hill Church, an aging but faithful congregation, sought a way

When retired teacher Dave Eichler helped Glossbrenner Church in Mount Joy secure a Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant for canoes, a trailer and life jackets, he had a bigger vision than just getting church youths on the water. He wanted to use those resources to teach safe boating to the wider community.
Since August 2024, three local Scouting America troops - from Maytown, Hershey and Elizabethtown - have taken part in Eichler’s hands-on boat safety certification program. Each troop earned both state certification and merit badges after completing his course.
The fish and boat commission’s Boating and Water Safety Awareness (BWSA) course guides people to be knowledgeable in safe boat operation, the laws and regu -
lations, equipment and in-water participation.
The in-water portion involves floating in a life jacket and conserving body heat, using throw bags and ropes, performing safe swamping and canoe-over-canoe rescues and learning paddle strokes.
“Participants must pass a written test and perform the in-water skills to receive certification,” Eichler said. He runs his BWSA course at Speedwell Forge Lake in Elm.
In mid-September, Elizabethtown Scouting America Troop 51 took to the water with Eichler.
Scoutmaster Brandon Adams remarked that although he has boated before, the course provided a new way of looking at safety.
“(It) helped me understand more boating rightof-way and the various buoy markings and meanings,” Adams shared.
Each of the Scouts went

home with new knowledge from the experience.
Scout Jackson Nash learned that it’s important to have distress signals on board your boat.
Maintaining constant awareness of your surroundings is also important, said troop member Jack Deardorf.
“Knowing about the exclusion zones around military and cruise liner ships is important,” he commented.
Scout Kolton Adams shared a bit of trivia he learned during the program, noting, “A person needs to be at least 12 years old to operate a jet ski and have a boat safety card, too!”
And Alexander Whitney, also a member of the troop, explained his favorite part of the day.
“It was pretty cool doing the boat-over-boat stuff,” he said. “You never know when you might have to use it.”
Elizabeth Whitney,
committee chair for Troop 51, thanked Eichler for his class, adding, “We appreciate all the knowledge he shared with the troop.”
Instructing the Scouts comes naturally for Eichler, who spent 35 years teaching health, physical and outdoor education at Donegal High School. When he retired in 2020, he wanted to keep instructing people in outdoor activities, and he applied for the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission grant. He hopes program participants leave with knowledge that will keep them safe while also having fun on the water.
“If your Scout troop, church youth group or interested group of adventure-seeking folks want to also experience what I can offer, I can be reached at Glossbrenner Church,” Eichler said, adding that he’s already booking dates in the new year. “To schedule for 2026, call the church at 717-653-5683.”

to continue its legacy of ministry, Community Fellowship Church was prayerfully searching for a place to expand. Their connection and shared vision has become what both congregations recognize as a clear act of God’s orchestration.

Friedlinde (Kratz) Ebersole will tell her story of fleeing totalitarianism at a continental breakfast at Lancaster Church of the Brethren’s Worship & Event Center on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 9 a.m. The church is located at 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster.
Born in Yugoslavia to ethnically German parents, Ebersole found herself living in a refugee camp in Austria when she was 5 years old. She will tell the story of her family’s journey from post-World War II Europe to Lancaster in her talk, “How It All Got Started.”
Ebersole was part of the first refugee family that the Lancaster congregation

assisted in the 1950s and subsequently helped the church resettle other refugee families, including as recently as 2022 when she worked with the congregation’s Welcome Team to assist Afghan families.

activities, and explore their Christian faith in meaningful ways.
“IGNITE not only nurtures the next generation, but also reinforces the values and truths being shared in our adult ministries, creating opportunities for families to grow in faith together,” Eckert explained.
Through interactive lessons, games, and age-appropriate discussions, young people are encouraged to draw closer to God while building lasting connections with one another.
In addition to IGNITE, a variety of family-friendly events have been scheduled.
A Family Game Night will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 19, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. The evening will feature snacks and friendly competition.
The church will offer a Parents’ Night Out event on Friday, Dec. 12, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. The purpose of this event is to
provide an evening of holiday activities for children while their parents have a few hours to themselves.
The newest program, Story Time, is for children ages 3 to 5. It meets for about an hour in the mid-morning on two Wednesdays per month for an interactive reading plus educational time through play, games, music, and more.
Earlier this year, the church also hosted a Holy Week Prayer Labyrinth experience, Paint Night, and vacation Bible school.
All these gatherings are intended to be opportunities to invite friends, meet new people, and celebrate being part of the Wayside family.
These events are free and open to the Hempfield-area community. Families can see the slate of activities by visiting https://waysidepc .org/events/. If activities require preregistration, forms may be completed online.
