Holiday Shopping Fair To Aid Pet Entities BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

Salem UCC Plans “Bizarre Bazaar” “It’s our 35th year. It’s a big year for us,” Eileen Shipe commented, noting that for 34 years, Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) of Rohrerstown, 2312 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, has hosted a holiday bazaar on the first Saturday of November. The inventory for the inaugural event and those that followed were handcrafted by church members, who made ornaments, home décor, and more. Eventually, the bazaar began to include outside vendors, with Shipe coordinating their participation. Church members still contributed items that were featured in a type of silent auction. In June, while the church building was in its fourth month of closure to all activities, Shipe and her committee realized they needed a different plan for the bazaar. Rather than hold the bazaar in person, they thought to host it online. When it was not feasible for vendors to participate, the bazaar came full circle, with church members once again providing the entire

inventory for what has been dubbed the Bizarre Bazaar. The event will be held on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon. Salem members have donated about 45 themed baskets for the bazaar. “They’re unbelievable,” Shipe said. “Most of the baskets are worth close to $100. They have everything under the sun: for kids, for adults, wine, Mickey Mouse, (and) Hershey Spa with a $100 gift certificate.” “I was really impressed,” added church council member and webmaster Alex DiMarzio. “They really turned out.” DiMarzio has cataloged the baskets and their contents at https://salem-ucc-roh.square.site. Individuals may visit the website until Friday, Nov. 6, to view the baskets, buy tickets to enter to win the lots of their choosing, and order food prepared by the Salem Servers. Additionally, tickets will be available at the Bizarre Bazaar from 9 to 11 a.m. on Nov. 7. The drawings will begin at noon and will be livestreamed on Salem UCC’s Facebook page. The recording will be posted at www.salemuccroh.org, and winners will be contacted.

The Bizarre Bazaar’s menu will include quarts of mincemeat, hamburger barbecue, beef vegetable soup, and vegetarian vegetable soup as well as pumpkin pies and sticky buns. Orders may be picked up curbside at the church from 9 a.m. to noon on Nov. 7. Extras - as supplies last will be available that morning for those who did notpreorder. The proceeds from the Bizarre Bazaar will be used to continue restoring the historic church building and for mission outreach. DiMarzio noted that the council is considering expanding the iPad lending program that enables homebound individuals to participate in online church activities. Guests are invited to visit Salem’s Sunday worship services, which begin at 10 a.m., in person or via the livestream at www.salem uccroh.org. In-person services follow COVID-19 mitigation guidelines. “All are welcome,” DiMarzio said. More than 70 local businesses, crafters, vendors, and food sellers will come together to show their support for homeless pets at the eighth annual Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive on Saturday, Nov. 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The event will be held in the space that previously housed the Bon-Ton department store at Park City Center, 142 Park City Center, Lancaster. This is a new venue for the Holiday Shopping Fair, as coronavirus mitigation guidelines necessitated finding a larger space. Booths will be spread throughout the store in order to promote social distancing. Additional precautions will be taken to encourage safety for everyone involved. Face coverings will be required, social distancing will be maintained, and hand sanitizer stations will be located at the entrances and throughout the space. Volunteers will count shoppers to maintain occupancy limits and will check the temperatures of everyone entering the room. The first 100 adult attendees will

receive free goodie bags filled with special offers, coupons, and samples. There will be opportunities to enter prize drawings; attendees may collect their vendor passport game cards at the information desk. The Holiday Shopping Fair and Pet Food Donation Drive is open to people and pets, as it is presented by Furever Home Adoption Center, 5984 Main St., East Petersburg, and Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, 26 Millersville Road, Lancaster. “It is the perfect opportunity to get a head start on holiday gift-giving, knowing each purchase contributes to the well-being and homing of pets in need,” said Furever Home CEO Mary Jo Meinzer. “(The vendors) feature a wide range of products: jewelry, soaps, cosmetics, animal-related products, artwork, apparel, home goods, holidaythemed gifts, and unique crafts.” “In this unprecedented year, we recognize the need many people are facing each day, including taking care of their pets,” added Pet Pantry CEO Melody Sanders. “We ... appreciate everyone’s participation and generosity as we seek to take care of homeless pets and our pet family members.”

Pauline H. Engle, 94, formerly of Mount Joy, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, September 20, 2020, at Pleasant View Retirement Community. Born in Maytown, she was the daughter of the late Harry E. and Ada N. (Fridy) Hershey. Pauline was the wife of Alvin S. Engle, who passed away on June 10, 1971. Pauline was a graduate of the former East Donegal Township High School class of 1943. She and her husband, Alvin, co-founded Engle Printing in 1954 and Publishing in 1959. After Alvin’s death, Pauline and her children continued the business in which she was active until

Pauline is survived by two sons, Charles Engle, husband of Kathleen of Mount Joy, and Dennis Engle, husband of Lynn of Lititz; nine grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Harry Hershey, husband of Joan of Brethren Village, and John Hershey, husband of Mable of Marietta. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Audrey Rutt, and two brothers, Robert and Charles Hershey. When Alvin and Pauline founded Engle Printing, it was undoubtedly a partnership. Alvin was a quiet, hardworking businessman who took care of planning, pricing, and production, while Pauline, more outgoing, did the

hiring and day-to-day employee management. “She could never have done it without him, and he would not have done it without her,” recalled Charlie Engle, President of EPC. After Alvin Engle passed, Pauline decided to continue the family business with her children, who all agreed that they should pursue their parents’ dream. Before Alvin’s death, plans had already been drawn up for a new building where the company could expand. Two years after he passed, the family moved into their new facility on West Main Street. Later, a large production facility was added in West Hempfield, Lancaster County. While Pauline may not have imagined that the business would become what it did, her children had plans for further growth. “Even my father … I don’t think he ever thought that we would go from seven people to 400 employees at the high point,” Charlie said. She was proud of the company’s success, but even more so that all three of her children became actively involved in the business, each having at least one child who has chosen a career with EPC. Audrey, the eldest Engle sibling, served as EPC’s treasurer until her retirement one year prior to her passing in 2018. Whether in business or on family vacations, focus on family was paramount to Pauline. She loved spending vacations with her siblings, her children, and her grandchildren at the beach, in Potter County, or at their cabin along the Susquehanna. Besides family, relationships with friends were also important, as she entertained and traveled with them often. When asked how he thought his mother would want to be remembered, without hesitation Dennis Engle, EPC Vice President, said, “For her strong faith.” Pauline was a member of Mount Calvary Church in

Elizabethtown and was active singing in the choir and teaching Sunday school. She also taught Good News Club in her home. Expanding upon his mother’s Christian faith, Charlie reflected, “She would often say, ‘We have been blessed. It wasn’t just us; it was with God’s help.’” As a result, she gave back and supported many organizations in the community and beyond. Her example was the benchmark from which the Engle children carried on the business, and now the third generation draws from their grandmother’s tenacity and unwavering faith. A memorial service honoring Pauline’s life was held at Mount Calvary Church on October 4, 2020, where the family shared fond memories of their mother, grandmother, and sister.

Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17-room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15-foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. When you’re coaching a high school sports program that has a history of success, including trophy shelves filled with top honors in your league, the achievements may run together.
