Landisville PTO slates Fit Walk fundraiser BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
he Landisville PTO will host its annual Fit Walk fundraiser on Friday, Oct. 13. The event will occur at the quad between the Landisville Primary Center (LPC) and the Landisville Intermediate Center (LIC) on Mumma Drive in Landisville from 9:15 a.m. until the end of the school day. During the Fit Walk, parents and guardians of students at both elementary schools are invited to walk through the quad. The grades will participate in the fundraiser in 45-minute segments as the students take turns walking through the grass field between the schools. The fundraiser will also include music and entertainment provided by a DJ. Teachers and school staff members traditionally dress in costumes to walk alongside the youngsters as they cross the quad. This year, the Fit Walk fundraiser will be Minions-themed, and educators will wear clothing to resemble the fictional henchmen.

Participating students and teachers receive a unique T-shirt for the Fit Walk every year. This year, the Landisville PTO introduced a contest to allow students to submit designs for the shirt. Although each shirt must display the name of the event and the current year as well as the names of the Fit Walk’s sponsors on the back, students were encouraged to get creative to create a design for the front. Each student will receive a shirt with a color that is unique to his or her specific class; teachers will often reuse the Fit Walk shirts to keep track of their students during school assemblies and field trips throughout the year. The Fit Walk is the Landisville PTO’s largest annual fundraiser, and it is the only event where 100% of the monetary donations benefit LPC and LIC. This year, the PTO has set a $25,000 fundraising goal. While other elementary schools in Hempfield School District have an average of 500 students, the total number of students served by the See Fit Walk pg 3
Keeping the faith BY ANN MEAD ASH
Since the fall of 2022, David Kieffer, president of the FaithfulGive board, has been preparing for the organization’s first online giving event to benefit organizations with a Christian mission that are active in Lancaster County. “We prayed and thought and designed and listened for a year,” said Kieffer of FaithfulGive’s five-member board and its organizational team. “Mostly we listened to what would serve various nonprofit leaders.” The result is a three-day online
giving event, which will take place in October. More than 40 local organizations have signed on to take part in the fundraiser, which will open just after midnight on Sunday, Oct. 15, and close at the end of the day on Tuesday, Oct. 17. To introduce the event, a breakfast will be held on Monday, Oct. 16, at Westminister Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 a.m. In addition, a short celebration picnic will be held on Oct. 17 at 5 p.m. at Long’s Park. “There will be worship, celebration, and announcing prizes,”

The Amos Herr Foundation will sponsor a free lecture by Jack Brubaker at 7 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 19, at Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Brubaker, a Manor Township resident who writes “The Scribbler” column, as well as articles for other local publications, will discuss the life and work of author Phebe Gibbons. Phebe is credited with popularizing Pennsylvania Dutch culture in the 19th century and subsequently laying the foundation for tourism in

Lancaster County through her book “Pennsylvania Dutch and Other Essays.” Before Phebe published “Pennsylvania Dutch and Other Essays” in 1872, many Americans had no knowledge of Amish and Mennonite communities. The author was born in a Quaker community in Philadelphia in the early 19th century, but she came to Lancaster after marrying Joseph Gibbons of Bird-inHand. As a member of the Quaker community, Phebe had much in common with the plain manner of living that was practiced by her See Lecture pg 7
