Scouts, AMVETS Plan Veterans Wreath Ride BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER

The usual fundraising strategies used by the members of Boy Scout Troop 64 have had to be modified this year for the expected reason. That prompted new ideas for raising money to support Wreaths Across America (WAA), which Troop 64 has participated in for several years. Thus, the Veterans Wreath Ride was created. Hosted by AMVETS Post 19, 715 Fairview Ave., Lancaster, the Veterans Wreath Ride for motorcyclists will be held on Saturday, Oct. 17, rain or shine. Registration will be open from 10 to 11:45 a.m., during which food may be purchased from the post kitchen. The ride will leave the post at noon and will end at the veterans’ memorial at Indiantown Gap National Cemetery (IGNC) in Annville about an hour later. There is a cost to participate in the ride, and the money collected will be given to WAA. The purpose of WAA is to remember, honor, and teach by laying holiday wreaths on veterans’ graves in December each year, Troop 64 assistant Scoutmaster Nina Evans said. “We’re remembering the veterans, their service, their sacrifice. We’re honoring their

families. We’re teaching the youths about the military and the sacrifices that have been made for them to live in a land that is free,” she explained. When Troop 64 first got involved with WAA a few years ago, it focused on collecting money for wreaths at IGNC. A former troop member is interred at IGNC, as is the father of a current Scout. The number of graves at IGNC has increased to about 43,000, and the troop has expanded its impact to local cemeteries. The troops laid wreaths at Landisville and Salunga cemeteries last year and will add Rohrerstown/Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery and Laurel Hill Cemetery in Columbia - a total of 1,000 veterans - this year. Three additional burial grounds may be added next year. Evans is recruiting businesses to sponsor the purchase of wreaths, and she hopes to get veterans’ families involved as well, as much for the families as for the Scouts. Evans appreciates being able to share the families’ personal stories with the Scouts. “I can’t give them connections like that with anything I could teach them from a book,” she said. “This is a real thing we’re doing.” Evans related an interaction she had with a woman See Veterans Wreath Ride pg 2

Tony Kresge invites other middle and high school students to sign up for the virtual classroom at Hempfield United Methodist Church.

Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the program, which has been dubbed a “virtual classroom.” Adult volunteers who have passed background checks and received Safe Sanctuary training will monitor the classroom. While some of the volunteers are former teachers, their primary role is not that of educators. “Our goal isn’t necessarily to provide classroom aide service, but if (students) are having issues … we’re there for them,” said Kevin Kresge, HUMC associate pastor and director of online ministries. “Mostly we’re just there to make sure it’s safe, but we’ll offer help if we can.” Students must bring their own devices and will not have access to printers. Participation will be limited to 15 students at any time, and Kresge has set up a SignUpGenius page accessible at https://hempfieldumc.org/classroom so individuals may reserve their spaces. The calendar currently runs through Thanksgiving, but the classroom will be open as long as it is needed, Kresge said.

Polycystic kidney disease (PKD) runs in families. Bill Blees, 56, of Manheim Township inherited it from his father, who died at age 60. Three of Bill’s half-siblings have the disease, and his children are at risk of having it as well. As the name implies, in PKD, the two bean-shaped organs that filter the blood and pass waste as urine are riddled with cysts. Inside and outside, Bill’s kidneys have developed growths the size of grapes. Each kidney is the size of a football. They should only be the size of his fist.

COVID-19 mitigation protocols will be followed, including daily screening, wearing masks, and social distancing. Volunteers will sanitize the classroom before students arrive and after they leave. Room 170 has an exterior door, so after students are screened outside, they may enter the room without passing through the rest of the church. The doors and windows will be open as much as possible to provide ventilation. A storage space for packed lunches will be provided. “We’re trying to get our café reopened in the church so we can offer some sort of snacks,” Kresge commented. There is no cost to attend the virtual classroom. Participation is ideally for students who do not have sufficient internet service. Kresge related that he heard of students spending long hours in the lobbies of fast-food restaurants so they could do their schoolwork, and he wanted to do something to help. “We perceived a need in the community, and after some discussion with several of the local school district

superintendents, our concerns were confirmed,” Kresge said. “We knew that we needed to find a way to help families that don’t have access to reliable internet for their students who are attending school virtually.” The idea for the virtual classroom stemmed from a conversation with another United Methodist pastor. Kresge then contacted the districts most represented by the students who participate in HUMC activities: Hempfield, Columbia, Donegal, and Penn Manor. As word about the program has spread, other churches have called Kresge to find out how they can do something similar for students in their communities, and Kresge has been happy to share his experience. “Taking care of our communities is one of the big values we espouse,” he said. years before organs from a deceased donor become available. However, the transplant of a kidney from a living donor could happen in just three months. Because she does not have Bill’s O+ blood type, Diane had hoped to participate in a paired donation, through which she would donate to another recipient and then another donor would provide a kidney to Bill. However, she experienced a serious illness five years ago that now excludes her from donating. Instead, she has campaigned to find other individuals willing to make a donation. “We’ve been doing everything possible - placing yard signs, printing shirts, hiring a billboard - that we can do to find him a kidney before he goes on dialysis,” Diane remarked. Bill’s insurance will cover the cost of the organ harvest and the transplant surgery, but it will not cover the income lost during the donor’s or Bill’s recoveries. However, when

“He’s in a lot of pain. His kidneys are pushing on the other organs,” said Bill’s wife, Diane. “He can’t hold his grandchildren or play with them like he wants to.” Bill has worked for Yellow Freight for several decades. Because he is a truck driver, he is unable to take pain medication stronger than acetaminophen. More concerning than the pain, though, is the loss of renal function. Bill’s kidneys are functioning at only 15%, which means he is a candidate for dialysis. Unfortunately, as soon as Bill begins dialysis, he will be unable to work. The other option is a kidney transplant. Diane noted that transplant recipients are not allowed to be added to the transplant list until their kidney function drops to 20%. The rationale is that kidneys are expected to last 10 years, so delaying a transplant may give an individual more time before another solution is needed. Bill could wait five to eight

Family First Health held a ribbon-cutting ceremony at its new dental center, 430 Walnut St., Columbia, on Sept. 17. The event was livestreamed on social media and featured Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce & Visitors Center executive director Beverly Shank, who welcomed the new dental center to the Columbia community. Family First Health president/CEO Jenny Englerth, vice president of dental services Dr. LaJuan Mountain, and board chair Rob Bernhard also gave remarks. The facility provides access to primary dental care for clients of all ages. Participants will experience life as it was in the early 1800s when Rivertown Theatre Productions presents Columbia’s Haunted Lantern Tour, themed “Authentic Illusions.” The annual event will take place on Friday, Oct. 16; Sunday, Oct. 18; Friday, Oct. 23; and Saturday, Oct. 24. Tours will run every half hour beginning at 6:30 p.m., with the final tour stepping off at 9:30 p.m. on Oct. 16, 23 and 24 and 8 p.m. on Oct. 18. Returning to directing the tour again this year are Sara Mimnall and Rebecca Wright, who noted that the event was expanded to two weekends in 2020. “Last year, we had 300 to 350 and we sold out and we had to turn people away,” Wright explained. “That’s why we expanded it. Rocks, a music education program provided by Carnegie Hall’s Weill Music Institute (WMI), during the 2020-21 season. The nearly 5,500 students participating in Link Up will participate in a virtual culminating concert in May 2021 where they will sing and play the recorder or the violin with the orchestra from home. This performance often serves as students’ first concert experience and provides them with the opportunity to apply the musical concepts they have studied. For more than 30 years, Link Up has paired orchestras with students in grades three through five at schools in their local communities to explore orchestral repertoire and fundamental musical skills, including creative work and composition, through a handson music curriculum. In a Section One clash with visiting Penn Manor on Friday night, the Hempfield managed to carry a slim 60 lead until the offense found its rhythm. What came after that was a barrage of points, lifting the Knights to a 40-7 defeat of the Comets at Landisville. “Initially the offense struggled to find any momentum. I’ll credit Penn Manor’s defense for that,” said firstyear head coach George Eager. “We knew Penn Manor was a tough team.

We expected a fight.” A pair of Spencer Biscoe field goals - from 37 yards away and one from 35 yards - was all Hempfield (1-0 league, 1-1 overall) managed early on. Tanner Hess broke free for a 30-yard touchdown run and Stephen Katch added a 12-yard scoring scamper to make it 20-0 at the half. Hess finished with 160 yards on 22 carries and a second touchdown. Katch, who replaced starting quarterback Cam Harbaugh (12 completions, 123 yards) late in the first half due to an injury, ran for 67 yards.

Grant Hoover, who also scored a rushing TD, gained 22 of those yards. “When you look at the makeup of our team, we go with Tanner Hess,” Eager explained. “He runs very hard.” Asked about the offensive line, Eager praised the work of seniors Aidan Power and Will Alexander. “We’re anchored by those two seniors,” he said. “They have physical play with little to no mistakes. With their experience they’ve brought the juniors up and have shown them the ropes on what it takes to play in Section One.” Time and again, the defense denied the Comets (0-2) a score until a 67-yard bomb from Luke Brass to Isaac Hostetter in the fourth quarter. As for that first win, Eager remarked, “I’m very proud of the players and the staff. We’ve all come together. The senior leadership has been tremendous. It is the first win of the year as a program, but it’s a true team effort.” GIRLS’ SOCCER In an exciting season-opening L-L League game, the Warriors and Knights played to a 2-2 draw on September 23. In the back-and-forth contest, Georgia Kielmeyer scored for the Knights with seven minutes left in the first half to tie the score at 1-1. Bri Zickefoose scored Hempfields’ other goal. Sophomore Emileigh Antesberger had six saves in the draw. On a last minute feed from Katherine Morgan, Kielmeyer scored the only goal of the game on Saturday, giving Hempfield a 1-0 win over Manheim Central. Antesberger had four saves in the shutout until Kielmeyer’s gamewinner. FIELD HOCKEY Following their non-league 4-1 victory at Cocalico, the Black Knights suffered a pair of defeats, falling to 1-2 (0-2 league). On Tuesday, September 22, the Knights outshot the Eagles 18-5 with goals by Oliva Wenzel and Kenna Price in the second quarter. Jessica Shreiner added a third-quarter goal and Karly Bervinchak capped the scoring at the 3:40 mark of the fourth.

Keira Boensch registered three assists and Liz Williams added one. Junior goalie Eryn Murphy grabbed four saves. Two days later Manheim Township posted a 5-0 win at Hempfield. In a Saturday afternoon road game, the Knights came up short in a 4-0 final at Penn Manor. BOYS’ SOCCER The Knights opened the season with a 4-2 Section One win, turning away Warwick in a high-scoring game at Landisville on September 23. Nate Stoltzfus scored two goals in the second half. After an Andrew Schwartz penalty kick tied the score in the 68th minute, the Knights inched ahead on Hunter Green’ goal in the 73rd minute. Nathan Leisure nailed it down with the Knights’ fourth goal two minutes later. David Sidoti dished off two assists on the day. In a non-league game two days later, the Rams’ Luke Johnson scored twice to help Central Dauphin earn a 3-0 victory. CROSS COUNTRY The girls’ and boys’ squads both improved to 2-0 with a Thursday afternoon defeat of Solanco and Lebanon in an L-L League cross country race at Hempfield. The girls dominated Lebanon 1550 and also Solanco (19-42) with Ella Wolfe running a winning pace of 19:24. She beat second-place finisher, Solanco’s Lilly Soulliard, by 31 seconds. Lily Williams (20:07), Hannah Kilheffer (21:00) Molly Siebert (21:02) and Paige Harrington (21:16) placed third through sixth. Isabel Smith (21:27), Gabriella Hollinger (21:45), Grace Sringer (22:27) and Lily Clinton (22:28) claimed 8th through 11th. Julia Den Bleyker (22:45, 13th) and Brynn Ramsey (22:59, 14th) also placed. The boys were equally dominant with a 19-42 defeat of Lebanon and 15-50 over Solanco. Lantern Tour from pg 5 The tour, led by actors from the nonprofit theater company, will begin and end at the Loyal Order of Moose, 223 Locust St., Columbia, and will venture down Locust and Second streets guided by lantern light. A trolley ride will also be part of the tour, and there will be an indoor location - the historic Samuel Miller mansion, which is now home to Art Printing Company at 131 Locust St. The characters being portrayed on the tour will include both fictional and real-life characters. For example, this year visitors will meet the original owners of the First National Bank of Columbia at the corner of Second and Locust streets. “Each of these

characters performs as if they are living in the moment of the time period they were from,” Wright explained. Wright pointed out that actors on the tour are all volunteers and are of varying ages. “Our youngest actor is 6, and then we have some older folks that work with us,” she said. “They also span counties York, Lancaster and Lebanon.” Preparation for the event begins in January. “Sara and I start preparing at the very beginning of the year. Scriptwriting takes us to May, and we do auditions in June,” said Wright, noting that rehearsals start in July. “We rehearse once a week and, when it’s closer, two or three times a week. We walk
