YWCA Institute Helps Fight Racism Through Education BY DAYNA M. REIDENOUER
According to YWCA Lancaster training coordinator and abolitionist educator Adam Hosey, financial hardship will not be a barrier to participating in upcoming Racial Equity Institute (REI) sessions. “One of our guiding principles is that we will turn no one away for financial reasons as long as they are willing to put in the time to do the work,” Hosey explained. “This is why we have shifted from a defined cost to a suggested donation structure.” For more than 20 years, YWCA Lancaster has consistently offered REI classes, which were created for YWCA USA by Cultural Bridges to Justice in the late 1990s. Within the last few months, however, the program has been updated, reimagined, and reformatted in response to the current national dialogue and the health concerns of COVID-19. The REI program now includes 12 hours of in-person training, with approximately two hours of online participation, during a five-day period.
Training sessions have been scheduled for Monday, Sept. 21, to Friday, Sept. 25; Saturday, Oct. 17, to Saturday, Oct. 24; and Monday, Nov. 16, to Friday, Nov. 20. In-person classes will meet at the YWCA Lancaster, 110 N. Lime St., Lancaster, in socially distanced classrooms. “While the core of our workshop remains the same, we are constantly updating materials and approaches to meet the moment,” Hosey said. The training sessions are open to anyone who wants to address racism, sexism, and other forms of oppression in themselves and their community, Hosey said. Offering REI sessions is one way that YWCA Lancaster demonstrates its commitment to advocating against the oppression that many groups and individuals endure. “During these unprecedented times, everyone is trying to understand and respond as quickly as possible,” said Bob Herbert, director of communications and community engagement. REI trainers have completed a rigorous 14-day training regimen.

Garden-themed gift baskets will be up for bids in a silent auction on Sept. 24.
Traditionally, the Women’s Garden Club of Lancaster County hosts meetings during the school year, kicking off with a reorganizational meeting in September and concluding with a banquet in May. While the most recent meeting-year did not wrap up in the usual manner because of the coronavirus, the club has announced that it will temporarily resume monthly meetings and presentations. The reorganizational meeting will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24, at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 St. Thomas Road,
Lancaster. Limited refreshments will be provided. A silent auction fundraiser will be offered during the meeting. A variety of items have been provided for the auction, including garden-related decor, tools, subscriptions, artistic jewelry, and more. The proceeds will support the club’s programs and community projects. Carol H. Dale’s paintings of scenes that bring her joy and peace will be displayed at the LCAA this fall. with some classes meeting outdoors as the weather permits. Classes are limited to eight students to allow for physical distancing while still enjoying the social interaction of in-person instruction. Everyone is required to wear a mask and follow CDC guidelines. A fee has been set for each class, with discounts for LCAA members. Karen Frattali is teaching “Exploring the Fall Landscape in Watercolor” on Tuesdays from 10 a.m. to noon and from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. The first classes took place on Sept. 15, and the course will run through Tuesday, Oct. 20. Students may choose to attend the morning or afternoon classes. Henrietta Holton-Thomas will offer two one-day workshops. “Experimental Wet Watercolor” will be held on Saturday, Sept. 26, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., and students will experiment with wet and loose watercolor painting techniques. In “Sculpture Workshop,” set for 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 17, students will use self-hardening clay with ceramic techniques to focus on viewing three-dimensional forms in space. Novice artists will gain a better understanding of how to control watercolor and mix colors in “Beginning Watercolor,” taught by Tony Bonazzi from 7 to 9 p.m. on Thursdays from Oct. 8 to Nov. 12. Bonazzi will also teach the “Intermediate Drawing” class, which will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. on Mondays, Oct. 5 to Nov. 9. Students will go beyond the basics to develop their ability to draw from observation and concentrate on shape and value. As its name suggests, “Landscape Painting Plus”
will encourage oil and acrylic painters to focus on landscape and incorporating figures, animals, and more into their art. Principles of composition, perspective, and color mixing will be explored. Carol Herr will teach the course, which will be held on Fridays, Oct. 2 to Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to noon. Dot Stepenaski will lead “Passion for Pastels,” emphasizing color, values, and pastel techniques, for artists of all skill levels. Classes will meet on Thursdays, Sept. 17 to Oct. 22, from 9 a.m. to noon. Artists who want to enjoy working outdoors in the company of others but without a formal agenda are invited to join the LCAA Fair Weather Painters group, monitored by Marita Hines. The group meets at different times and places to paint outdoors. There is no cost to participate. The trainers will lead participants on a journey of personal reflection while creating space to take actionable steps to confront racism. The class will center experiences and conversation and teach students to be comfortable with discomfort, Hosey added. “There is some homework that involves light reading, but don’t worry, there are no quizzes,” Hosey remarked. “We want people to leave the class with a common language about how to talk about racism, as well as to begin to analyze their own selves and the world around them with a critical race lens.” Every REI session is limited to 15 people. Haunted Attraction Now Open Field of Screams, 191 College Ave., Mountville, began its 2020 season on Sept. 11. The spooky attraction will be open every Friday, Saturday and Sunday night, including Halloween night, through the second weekend in November. Events open at 6 p.m., with the exception of Saturdays in October when the site opens at 5 p.m. This year, the Haunted Hayride path has been modified to include a new attraction, The Chop Shop. Additionally, the S.H.A.D.E. Cryogenic Facility that was introduced last season has been upgraded for 2020. The

New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. St. John Neumann Catholic School recently marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster. St. John Neumann Catholic School marked the first day in its new Education Center addition at St. John Neumann Catholic Church in Lancaster after relocating from St. Anne School in downtown Lancaster. Designed by Lancaster architectural firm Hammel Associates Architects LLC, the addition and renovations to the parish buildings were completed by Wohlsen. The project provided the Catholic education facility
with nine additional classrooms, restrooms, and office support spaces. Upgrades to the west portion of the church building are designed to support the education facilities and increase security and accessibility. Select renovations to the church continue and are scheduled for completion by the end of September. A special event to celebrate the project’s completion is scheduled for Thursday, Sept. 24.

This year, the American Heart Association (AHA) has changed the format of the Lancaster Heart Walk. Instead of coming together for a one-day event, participants from across Lancaster County can join the Heart Walk by walking wherever they are any time during the month of September. The Lancaster Division of the AHA has named 12-yearold Titus Lingenfelter of Lancaster as the 2020 Lancaster Heart Walk Heart Hero. When Titus’ parents, Jerry and Robyn Lingenfelter, were expecting him 12 years ago, it took two ultrasounds to confirm that he had a critical congenital heart defect called Tetralogy of Fallot. After he was born, he spent just days in the NICU before being sent home. Just eight weeks after entering the world, Titus underwent a life-saving surgery. W hile another surgery is in his future, Titus sees his doctors regularly and has been cleared to participate in regular activities, such as soccer. Titus and his family will share their story

Local author Hillary Daecher and illustrator Angie Hohenadel have teamed up for the first time to create a children’s book titled “SOAR.” Daecher, who lives in Lititz, has been writing short stories since she was a child. “SOAR” is her first published children’s book.
