Kathy Heil thoroughly enjoys gardening; she likes spending time alone with her perennials that thrive in the garden outside of her home. But Heil also enjoys sharing her gardening passion with others. The museum is filled with thousands of clocks, pocket watches and wristwatches from around the world. Sierra Club Plans Climate Action Picnic The Pennsylvania Chapter of the Sierra Club will host a family-friendly picnic, featuring information about climate change, from 1 to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29. Titled “Too Hot to Ignore: A Climate Action Picnic,” it will be held at Pavilion 31 in D.F. Buchmiller County Park, 97 S. Ledwith Drive, Lancaster. It is open to the public. The event will feature

To say that the newest addition to the National Watch and Clock Museum will make a big impact is a bit of an understatement. At almost 19 feet tall, the two-dial Ansonia Street Clock (which the museum refers to as “Quincy”) is by far the tallest timepiece housed in the building, located at 514 Poplar St., Columbia. The massive clock also took a long journey to come to its final resting place, where visitors can see the clock in person and learn about its history. “The Ansonia Street Clock was first erected in 1887,” in Quincy, Ill., said Don Bugh, president of the Tower and Street Clock Chapter of the National Association of Watch & Clock Collectors (NAWCC). The clock traveled 5,000 miles from where it was manufactured in Brooklyn, N.Y.; to Quincy; to Memphis, Mo.; to Los Alamos, N.M.; to Tampa, Fla.; and finally to Columbia. “It was such a rare clock that there was no question that it should be preserved in the NAWCC Museum for future generations to see,” Bugh said. The street clock is housed

in the museum’s newly ex panded Public T ime gallery. “ T he Q uinc y Galler y extension to the Public Time gallery added over 500 square feet,” Bugh shared. “The Ansonia Street Clock is such an important addition that the space is used exclusively to display Quincy, its separately displayed movement, along with documented history and photos.” The Quincy is the best of three surviving examples of an Ansonia street clock, and one of only two of its ornate design still in existence. In April, 23 members of the Tower and Street Clock C hapter, NAWCC staff members and local NAWCC volunteers helped during “Quincy Week” to apply goldleaf to the decorative elements of the clock. “On Saturday of that same week, the clock was erected in the new Quincy extension of the Public Time gallery,” Bugh said. “For the first time in over 12 years, Quincy was standing tall again - and this time in its own dedicated space within the NAWCC Museum.” On July 25, a formal dedication of Quincy took place at the museum, with about

I’ve always had an inclination to do some gardening.” Many of the same feelings Heil has about gardening she shares with the other 50 dues-paying members of the garden club. That bond possesses the power to inspire strong friendships and uplifting camaraderie. “They’re women from all kinds of backgrounds,” said Heil. “That’s what makes it very interesting. You learn about all these pursuits people have.

“We share our pursuit of gardening interests,” she added. “We have a lot of fun; we like to learn and share good times. The purpose of the club is to foster interests that are all about gardening.” The club periodically hosts open houses and embarks on regular field trips. Its meetings feature presentations from gardening experts and an Americanized informal tea that includes coffee and appetizers in addition to tea. Nine s ubcommi tte es support the structure and work of the club. “Being we meet once a month, it’s always great to get together,” said Heil. “We try to get everyone involved. It’s not just an observation program. “Our club is open,” Heil continued. “We just have a joy, and we want to share that. We’d like to get other people interested.” The club meets monthly at 1 p.m. on the fourth Thurs-

day at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 301 Saint Thomas Road, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public. “When I became a retiree, I was able to spend more time gardening and developing more perennials,” said Heil. “As we get older, we have to evaluate what we can do and we can’t do.” T he garden club was established in 1947. Over the last 80 years, the club has promoted, advocated for and explored the beauty of gardening. “In the 1930s, there was a men’s garden club in Lancaster County,” said Heil. “Since they did not allow women, women started their own garden club. In the beginning, new members had to be approved. Sisters Publish Children’s Book An illustrated hardback c h i l d re n ’s b o o k t i t l e d “All in a Day With Daisy” was recently published by thre e sisters , Judy Smoker, June Hollinger, and Rhonda Nissley, who grew up in Strasburg as the Siegrist girls and are now married and living in Lancaster County with families of their own. In 2023, a year after their mother passed, the sisters took a trip to Florida to reminisce and visit Marco Island, where their parents enjoyed vacationing. W hile there, they talked about how they felt God prompting them to find a way to carry on their mother’s legacy by using their talents for God’s glory and sharing Jesus with others. After going on a dolphin

tour in Florida, the sisters came up with the idea to use their talents to create a children’s book. Organ Concert Planned First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will present a concer t, “Organ in a Grand Style,” on First Friday, Sept. 4, at 8 p.m. Doors will open at 7:30 p.m. The 30-minute program will feature organist Ken Krause, who

is an organ builder with Columbia Organ Works and the organist at St. John Lutheran Church in Lancaster. The concert will include “Grand Choeur” by Chauvet, “Prelude in E-flat” and “Postlude in F” by Guilmant, and “Praeludium in

D Minor” by Kittel. The concert will conclude with Schneider’s “Fantasie und Fugue.” The concert is free and open to the public. For more information, contact the church office at 717-397-5149.

Along with woodturning, the show will feature photographers, watercolor and oil paintings, metalwork, wreaths, home décor, soaps, handmade cards and more. “ We really have something for every budget and ever y interest,” Hobday said. “We even have someone who makes brooms.” Many vendors will demonstrate their work, and all artisans are available to answer questions and interact with the crowd. “The show is meant to be educational to see how people make their wares as much as it’s meant to showcase amazing art,” Hobday explained. “I think that aspect really sets us apart.” When she organized the first show almost 40 years ago, Hobday gathered 83 vendors. The show has grown every year. “We are ranked in the top 200 best shows in the country,” she remarked. “People know our reputation.” The show is juried by a team of five people, all of whom are artisans who participate in the show. “They are working artists, and they have a wealth of knowledge they bring to the jury,” Hobday said, noting that her own watercolors will be for sale at the show. “We try to make the show very diverse when we choose our vendors.” She also enjoys mentoring younger artists and

encouraging them to participate in shows such as this one, where their art will be seen by hundreds of shoppers. Hobday organizes two art shows a year - one in the spring and one over Labor Day weekend. Each show has a charity it supports. “This year, our charitable organization is Columbia Cat Action Team, CCAT,” she said. “They’ll have a table of merchandise for sale, and people can donate to them at the show.” CCAT’s mission is focused o n re d u c i n g fe ra l c a t populations in Columbia through trap-neuter-vaccinate-return initiatives. Root’s Market food vendors will be open during the show, providing plenty of food options, and a strolling musician will entertain throughout the event. “It’s free to attend the show, and there is plenty of free parking,” Hobday said. “It’s educational, and it’s affordable. MCCL Opens Registration The Mennonite Children’s C hoir of L ancaster (MCCL) invites c h i l d re n a n d yo u t h s entering second through 12th grades to join its choral community. MCCL provides choral education for students in kindergarten through 12th grade, with both auditioned and nonauditioned options. Registration is now open for the 2026-27 year. Members of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP) Jesse Jones Composite Squadron in Lancaster attended Hawk Mountain Ranger School, one of CAP’s longest-running and most challenging national cadet training programs, ending on July 19. This year is the 70th anniversary of Hawk Mountain, located in Kempton. During the weeklong training program, cadets rappelled, practiced land navigation, and learned wilderness sur vival and search and rescue operations. They learned aircraft search techniques used in downed aircraft missions, including

Hawk Mountain’s program seeks to teach leadership and field readiness and to help participants build confidence. It also supports CAP’s emergency services mission. The Jesse Jones Composite Squadron has also announced the promotions and awards ear ned by cadets and senior members at the group’s July 27 meeting. Four cadets were recognized for attending Cadet Training School at Fort Indiantown Gap. Cadet Airman 1st Class Kaiden Pa i n t e r o f L e o l a a n d Cadet Senior Airmen Luca Hermosillo and Noah Hermosillo, both of Wrightsville, all received their

clue detection, evidence search, and terrain-based search patterns. T here was also a visit from a medical helicopter crew, which landed at the training site and showed the cadets how air-medical teams prepare equipment, stabilize injured patients, and coordinate transport during emergency rescues.
