Hempfield Marching Band Relishes the Chance to Compete BY GEORGE DEIBEL

he Hempfield High School marching unit is giving new meaning to the term “big band.” The marching band’s ensemble

has 115 members, the most in at least a decade. “I think the reason we have a lot of students is because we are generating a lot of interest in fourth grade when kids are starting instruments,” director Matt

Ceresini said. “Our two elementary directors, (Ms. Rebecca) Pershouse and Mr. (Daniel) Stauffer, are both our elementary teachers for band, and they also are both assistant directors of the marching band. So we have a really great connection

with getting kids started and keeping them excited until it’s time to join marching band. I think that’s been a huge part of it. I would say the other reason is because I think it’s a fun experience, and so we’re able to retain students from year See Marching pg 2

The attrition rate is very low, and we’re getting a lot of new kids in, so we’ve been growing over the past decade.” Hempfield’s marching band tuned up for its fall schedule during band camp in early August. “ We’re exploring different dimensions, and building up from little dots and coming together,” said senior Katie Keele, a drum major and band president. Senior Adam Binder, a drum major and lead conductor, said the band’s show, called “The Architect,” will feature a wide variety of songs.

The performance will begin with “Harmonielehre” by John Adams. “It’s a grand classical piece with big full ensemble stabs, and that’s our opening statement,” Adam said. The second movement is “Dappled Light,” which is a studio soprano saxophone piece, and will be performed by oboe soloist Amalia Gelbert. Next will be “Inventions” by Johann Sebastian Bach, which serves as a transition into the pop song “Just the Two of Us.” A percussion-heavy movement, “The Grid,” will precede the closing number, “Psychopomp.” Ceresini considers the strengths of the band while choosing songs for the per-

formance, but that’s not the sole factor. “It does (affect the choices) somewhat, specifically with the oboe solo, because we knew we had a really strong oboe soloist,” he said. “But generally, what we’re trying to do when we’re picking the show is thinking about how we can highlight each section of the band because we want every section to be strong. We’ll think about what the percussion feature is going to be, what the color guard feature’s going to be, what the woodwind feature is going to be, what the brass feature is going to be. I think more we’re trying to think about what we can do to tell a cool story or show something neat visually rather than specifically tailor it exactly to individual students.” The Hempfield marching band will play at each Black Knights home and away football game and take part in competitions under the USBands and Bands of America banners. Opening Night will be held at Hempfield on Saturday, Sept. 12, followed by shows at West Shore on Saturday, Sept. 26; Unionville on Saturday, Oct. 10; West Shore on Saturday, Oct. 24; and the USBands State Championship in Downingtown on Halloween. “It’s an amazing part of the season, and it helps because what comes with

competition is feedback from judges,” Adam said. “It gives us a different perspective to look at the show with a competitive aspect rather than just at a halftime show. I often find it brings about a new kick for all the students and improving what we’re doing, and it gives us a lot more to refine once we get feedback from judges.” While some high school band bands have opted to play at noncompetitive festivals, Hempfield prefers to perform in front of judges. “I think a big part of competitive band is tradition and what the expectation of the school community is,” said Ceresini. “Hempfield has been competing for decades and decades. I think there’s a lot of educational value in competition because knowing when you’re being evaluated is one of the strongest motivators humans have, especially high school kids. We really try to look at it from that end. It’s not so much about winning and losing, but how do we use the motivation we get from being evaluated to propel ourselves and also unite us as a team, because definitely going through a season where you know you’re being evaluated helps the students feel bonded together. By the end of the season, we’re always a closer family than when the season started.”

Project from pg 1 ates 12 hospitals and more than 250 patient care facilities in central Pennsylvania and northern Maryland, including locations in Ephrata, Lebanon, Mount Gretna and York. “It’s a very large research project, and we will be collecting an enormous amount of data,” said Dr. Kann. “We’re also working with 15 to 20 hospital systems across the country. Soon we will have the largest data bank in the world. People who participate can learn some of the characteristics about themselves. The benefit to volunteers is that they learn about these problems and then they’re in position to prevent serious problems. “If volunteers have a family history of any problems, we can tell them their risks for those problems,” added Dr. Kann. “We store all of this data digitally. If a question ever comes up in the future, we just have to ask the computer for the details.” The Gene Health Project was initiated three years ago, and to this point the study has collected more than 6,000 genetic samples from volunteers. The goal for the project is to collect another 4,000 samples, but the research won’t stop there.

“After that, the hope is to continue the project,” said Dr. Kann. “We’ve already probably saved 1,000 lives and made 1,000 diagnoses. It’s the most remarkable way to do precision medicine. “Each of us has 23,000 genes,” continued Dr. Kann. “These genes are responsible for making proteins, and these proteins make us who we are. They determine things like the color of our eyes or the color of our hair. Basically, they make us who we are and allow us to be able to survive in most environments.” Spreading the word is one of the biggest challenges currently being faced by the Gene Health Project. Like any research, the bigger the sample size, the more accurate the findings. “The more you spread it, the more you’re able to help

people,” said Dr. Kann. “I would encourage people to sign up for the Gene Health Project and see what you can learn about yourself. It’s just a win, win, win. “Up until now, health care systems have been mostly reactive,” concluded Dr. Kann. “Now we’re putting a lot of effort into who’s going to get sick and how they’re going to get sick.”

Obviously, preventing a heart attack is better than treating one.” The Gene Health Project is an immense undertaking that involves multiple health care systems from all over the nation. The study collects samples of individuals’ genetics, stores the data and examines it. From those examinations, the study can predict an individual’s likelihood for certain illnesses and diseases. In six to eight weeks, participants are notified of the results of their studied samples. But the project needs samples to study. Interested individuals over the age of 18 can request blood draws or saliva kits through their Wellspan Health internet portals or by visiting the health care system’s website at www .wellspan.org. Program to Explore Flax Processing Lancaster Area Sewing Network (LASN) will present “Processing Flax” on Monday, Aug. 24, at 7 p.m. at Lancaster Friends Quaker Meeting, 110 Tulane Terrace, Lancaster. Cloth, and the thread with which to sew it, all begin as fiber. Today ’s fabrics come from a wealth of fibers, many of which are synthetic, but before the 20th century, sewing thread and fabric were made of natural fibers and could even be homemade. Flax was the typical fiber Lancaster County families used to make their own sewing thread and cloth. Flax comes from a plant that was once a commonly grown crop in Pennsylvania. During the upcoming presentation, Tina Mickley

will discuss flax culture and retting and will demonstrate the processes of breaking, scutching and hackling flax fiber, along with how that fiber becomes linen thread and, finally, linen cloth and sewing thread. Mickley, a spinner and weaver with a fine arts degree in painting, became interested in historic textiles and their production more than 45 years ago while working as a costumed interpreter at a national historic site. Since 2018 she has grown and processed her own flax, along with volunteering at area historic sites demonstrating spinning, weaving, and flax dressing. She is an independent contractor at the Landis Valley Village and Farm Museum, where she regularly interprets 18th-

and 19th-century textile production. Mickley helped to develop and teaches the museum’s Sheep to Fabric and Field to Fabric classes. She also collects antique spinning wheels and helped plan two Antique Spinning W heel Symposiums in Pennsylvania. Guests may register for the program on arrival. There is a fee for nonmembers, payable by cash or check only. LASN’s 2026 theme is “Sewing Revolution,” with all monthly meetings touching on an aspect of the topic. Auditions Open for MU Orchestra The Millersville University (MU) Orchestra will provide an opportunity for community musicians to audition to become members of the orchestra. The Historic Preservation Trust of Lancaster County will hold its fall bus trip on Thursday, Oct. 1. Participants will visit Annapolis., Md., to gain insight into three historic homes. Participants will board the coach bus at L ancaster Shopping Center, 1625 Lititz Pike, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m. and depart at 8:30 a.m. The group will begin its exploration at the William Paca House, a 1760s Georgian mansion that boasts a 2-acre garden and offers a p e e k i n to t h e i n ne r

workings of an upperclass household during the Revolutionary period. The house was restored in 1965 using historical artwork and archeological excavations. After enjoying a box lunch on the Paca Garden Terrace, attendees will hear a presentation on the ongoing James Brice House restoration project. The first cornerstone was laid in 1767, and the house subsequently experienced centuries’ worth of repurposing. Since 2014, it has been managed by Historic

Annapolis, which is transforming it into an educational museum. The trip is scheduled to conclude with a tour of the Hammond Harwood House, which has an Anglo-Palladian design. The group will return to L ancaster Shopping Center at 5:15 p.m. There is a fee, with a discount for members of the Histor ic Preser vation Trust of Lancaster County.
