Hempfield Foundation. The Black Knight Bookmobile is an effort spearheaded by reading specialists Amy Saporetti and Kim Rineer and elementary curriculum supervisor Jason Hoffman. A similar program is held in Saporetti’s home district of Cocalico. “Jason, Kim, and I partnered with them and had a meeting to share

ideas, and then we took their idea, and made it our own - the Black Knight Bookmobile,” Saporetti said. The next step was requesting a grant from the foundation. “When we write the grant, we specify what it is we would like to purchase and how we’d like to use the money,” Rineer explained. “Part of the grant was that we wanted to be able to use

There’s a great new nonprofit in Lancaster County that’s been founded by Neffsville resident Greta Myers. It’s called “Neuro Neighborhood.” “We used ‘neighborhood’ to give people a welcoming invitation to something bigger than themselves,” said Myers, who also serves as executive director of the organization. “Neighborhoods contain people who come together In the fight against neurological conditions, to support one another. The first one was so successful that they are running it back. American Legion Post 34 will hold its second annual Car, Truck, and Motorcycle Show on Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the post, 1388 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. The event will be held rain or shine unless the weather is especially poor. There is a fee to enter a vehicle; the show is free for spectators. There are no restrictions on vehicles that can be shown and no preregistration. After entering through one of two gates, participants should go inside the legion building to receive a windshield placard. More than 30 trophies will be awarded. Food available will include a special “car show menu” inside the legion. Any beverages purchased inside the legion must be consumed there, and no beverages may be taken inside the building. Hamburgers and hot dogs will be grilled outside, and there will also be an ice cream vendor. Proceeds will benefit American Legion Post 34 and its many projects, ranging from relationships with other veterans’ organization to other projects, such as scholarships for high school students. Post 34 holds a variety of events each year that are open to the public, such as bingo, breakfasts, and a chili cook-off. “The (number one goal) is to support veterans,” said event organizer Barry Harsh. “It’s all about the veterans.” Harsh also

a certain amount of money to buy new books to give out that would fit the theme that we wanted, which was to celebrate the 250th anniversary of our countr y. We used that money to buy new books that followed that theme.” Bookmobile organizers also acquired some gently used books to be given out. It has been a big success. “It’s gone very well,” said Hoffman. “The first week, we had approximately 50 kids and their families who were here between A. Herr Park and the outside classroom at Mountville. And then our second week, we had over 80 students and their families here.” The trio hopes to do it again next year and could add other locations. “I would love for the Black K nig ht B o okmobile to be a yearly thing,” said S a p o re t t i . “ We ’ ve h ad great teamwork here from school board members, Hempfield School District employees, great support from parents, and I could definitely see us doing this next summer, for sure.” Hoffman said the students will reap the benefits. “I think the great piece about it (is that) we often send kids home with books at the beginning of June, so they read those books by the end of June, they’re done (and think), ‘Well, now what do I do?’

So by coming every week, they continuously get new books, so that keeps them reading throughout the whole summer.” The experience is more meaningful than picking up some reading material. “(The students) also love to interact,” said Rineer. “They’ll see friends here, f ro m t h e i r s c h o o l s o r from other schools, and some of them see familiar faces like their teachers or their principals that are volunteering, and so that also helps us stay connected with them over the summer.” Although many of the book s are for elementar y -age students, the events also attract entire families. “Something else special I will add is when the families come, certainly there’s elementary age kids that they bring, but then there are littles, too, preschool students, or in some cases, toddlers, babies,” Saporetti said. “That’s a great connection. We can start early with those families, introduce them to Hempfield, and we do have books for little kids here, too. So that’s been great, connecting with our youngest Black Knights.” Vivienne Heisey, who will be a third-grader at Center ville Elementar y this fall, enjoys the fact she has many options from which to choose. “I

like that I can pick books,” she said. “I like that I can give them back, and I can keep them and that I can pick out books and see which ones are for me.” She utilizes a tried-andtrue process while making her selections. “ This is how I see if I like a book,” said Vivienne. “I read the back, I read the front page, and if I like it, I keep it. If I don’t like it, I just put it back. I like books that are, let’s just say, not too long, not too short. I like some books that have lots of pictures, some that just have words. I like a lot.” Mia Deascenti, a rising second-grader at Landisv i l l e P r i m a r y C e n t e r, attended the July 20 event with her father, Chris. “I like lots of books,” she said. Chris added, “It’s i m p o r t a n t to p ra c t i ce reading over the summer.” And it’s why the bookmobile events exist.

“Research tells us that kids need to read over the summer to prevent what’s called the summer slide,” said Saporetti. “By us organizing this Black Knight Bookmobile, kids have easy and free access to books to hopefully read over the summer and keep their skills going.”

For one day, Columbia’s Janson Field will transform into a living museum, bringing the sights, sounds and r ules of baseball’s earliest days back to life. On Saturday, Aug. 15, two vintage clubs will compete in a free doubleheader of 1864-style “base ball” (the original two-word spelling), a version of the game played by more than 400 teams across the country. The games will begin at 11 a.m. at the park, 650 Cherry St. The event is possible thanks to the support of the Columbia Lions Club as part of the borough’s yearlong tricentennial celebration, and admission is free. The matchup will pit the Keystone Club of Harrisburg against the Mechanicsburg Z ouaves. B oth teams recently competed with a total of 26 clubs in the Gettysburg National 19th Centur y Base Ball Fest ival, held July 18 and 19. Even the names of the teams are based in history, said Rich Heinick, who was a founding member of the Keystones when the team

formed more than a decade ago. “Both clubs have borrowed their names from actual teams that played in those towns dur ing the 1860s and 1870s,” he explained. “The Zouaves were re-formed recently, and this will be their inaugural game. There will be extra uniforms available if anyone would like to try their hand at 1864 base ball.” More than one sports historian has described this vintage sport as “a Civil War re-enactment with real bullets.” The game will look familiar to today’s fans, except for two notable differences: Players compete without gloves, since they were not widely used until the early 1880s, and a ball caught after one hop - known as “on the bound” - counts as an out. “The bound rule changes the way everyone hits, runs and positions themselves on defense,” Heinick said. “It seems a little strange at first, but you can see how this made sense in the early days of the sport. After several years of debate, the rule was amended in 1865

ating Neuro Neighborhood out of her residence. “Spinal cord injuries or brain injuries can be caused by traumatic events to either area of our central nervous system, or lack of blood flow to that area,” said Myers. “Symptoms widely vary between neurological conditions including movement, sensory and cognitive changes. Cognitive changes can include difficulty with memory, sequencing or planning. Some movement symptoms can include increased tone and reflexes in muscles, difficulty initiating movement and weakness affecting many muscle groups. “Speech and breathing can be impacted as well, because both of these actions are controlled by our muscles,”

In some of our most challenging times in life, we all need a neighborhood to count on.” Overseen by a five-person board of directors, Neuro Neighborhood serves about 200 individuals, mainly adults from L ancaster Count y and surrounding areas. Currently situated in the initial phase of its planned growth process, Neuro Neighborhood’s future goals include adding physical therapy services, incorporating a multidisciplinar y team, locating a physical office space, adding wellness programming and partnering with similar organizations in the community. “As I continued to study to become a board-certified Neurological Clinical Specialist, I also began searching for more community resources for my patients,” said Myers. “Unfortunately, I had trouble finding the types of resources and support that my patients were looking for, so I started writing those ideas down as a list. Then I did research and connected with other organizations around the country that were trying to incorporate a better continuum of care and support for adults with neurological conditions. My list continued to grow, and I found others who wanted to help me make that list a reality. Thus, we created Neuro Neighborhood.”

Among the community events that Neuro Neighborhood sponsors and conducts are regular Red Rose Parkinson’s Support Group meetings; Adaptive Recreation Day from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 26, at St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster; and periodic Neuro Caregiver Support Group meetings at Wellness Merge Physical Therapy, 903 Nissley Road, Lancaster. Waitlist Available for UDS Golf Event The United Disabilities Services Foundation (UDS) will hold its seventh annual Service Dogs Golf Tournament on Thursday, Sept. 17, from noon to 7 p.m. The event will take place at a new location this year - the Conestoga Country C lub, 1950 Stone Mill Road, Lancaster. Additionally, UDS trains dogs to work in schools, helping children who struggle to learn in the classroom, and to serve as Ambassador Dogs that visit individuals and businesses to spread the word about the program and share love and joy with those they meet.
