Nate Young’s not fiddling around.

On June 12, the West Lampeter Township multifaceted musician released his debut album, “The Lighthouse,” a folk music-oriented work. “I just hope people enjoy it,” Nate said. “I hope it resonates with them. I hope it gives some peace.”

The collection of recordings, listed under his full name, Nathaniel E. Young, is available on all major platforms, including Apple Music, Spotify, and YouTube.

“A leader is someone who sees potential in either another person or they see potential in an idea,” said Sarah Kemble, program director for Leadership Lancaster. “They kind of bring everyone together to achieve goals. It’s never about themselves. They are people who put their egos aside.”

Last year, Leadership Lancaster worked with more than 130 individuals seeking to hone their leadership skills. Those participants ranged in age from 19 to 70 - college students, working professionals and retirees - a great majority of whom either lived or worked in Lancaster County.

“The people who are coming to us are your neighbors,” said Kemble, a resident of the Manheim area.

“We’re trying to have different walks of life. They are people who have moved to the United States.

“(The reception has) been really good,” Nate said. “On release day, I made sure to reach out to a bunch of my friends and family and tell them it’s out, take a listen. It was great to get the positive reception from them. But also, more on a global scale it’s been doing pretty well, especially for a first release from kind of a smaller artist. I’m pretty satisfied with it. It’s been reaching a lot of people. More importantly, I think it just has touched a lot of people’s hearts, which is more what I’m going for, not just the numbers. It’s been a blessing.”

The 19-year-old recorded the album made up of original songs in his home. Nate plays the violin, ukulele, and guitar on the LP.

“It was fun,” he said. “I love composing and being able to figure different things out on different instruments. I really enjoy that. I made most of it in my room, and there are a lot of different artists on it as well,

The Ice Cream Lovers’ Ride - voted Best Ride in the State of Pennsylvania - will offer two scenic route options designed for riders who enjoy quiet backroads, rolling farmland, and local ice cream favorites. Riders participating in a 40-mile route will depart from Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, at 8:15 a.m., with stops at Bird-in-Hand Bakery, Lapp Valley Farm, and Oregon Dairy. Those taking part in a 28-mile route will depart from the church at 8:30 a.m., visiting Bird-in-Hand Bakery, Hayloft Ice Cream, and Oregon Dairy. The Covered Bridge Classic will feature multiple mileage options departing from different locations,

This year, the Covered Bridge Classic is expecting approximately 1,500 cyclists, underscoring its reputation as one of Pennsylvania’s most recognized and well-attended cycling events.

Access to Community Resources Expanded

Residents seeking help with housing, food, financial assistance, child care, health care, employment, and other essential needs may now connect directly with trained resource navigators at the Lancaster Public Library through a new partnership between PA 211 East and the Lancaster Public Library, located at 151 N. The Hempfield Foundation has announced the appointment of Dr. Andrew P. Ashton to its board of directors. Andrew is the owner and chiropractor at A Therapeutic Effect, a health and wellness practice that he and his wife, Sue, have owned and operated since 2007. Through the business, they serve families throughout the Hempfield community.

A Pennsylvania native, Andrew earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sports science from Ursinus College before completing his Doctor of Chiropractic. Known to his patients as “Dr. Andrew,” he has a passion for helping people of all ages live healthier lives, with special interests in sports medicine, prenatal chiropractic care, and pediatric care.

The Ashton family has deep roots in the Hempfield School District, as Andrew and Sue are the parents of five Hempfield students and graduates. Their family’s long con -

nection to Hempfield inspired Andrew to invest even more deeply in the educational experiences of local students by serving with the Hempfield Foundation. Dogs Are LKC Members’ Best

For members of the Lancaster Kennel Club (LKC), dogs are more than just pets. Dogs are companions, partners, and members of the family.

One of LKC’s goals is to explore and reinvent humans’ relationships with canines.

“If you have a good bond with your dog, they will look up to you,” said Dave Martin, who’s been LKC’s president for five years. “They’ll follow you, and you have to take care of them. You can make bonds through walks and through tricks.”

LKC meets at 6:30 p.m. on the second Wednesdays of August, October, February and April at the Manheim Township Public Library, 595 Granite Run Drive, Lancaster. The meetings are open to the public.

“Purebred dogs are our focus,” said Martin. “Every breed was bred for a special purpose. When dogs become pets, their purpose can be lost. We’re trying to promote purebreds, responsible dog ownership and responsible pet ownership.

“Being a good owner means making sure your dog has food, water, all of its medical needs are taken care of and that it feels safe emotionally,” added Martin. “If you have a purebred and you realize it has a medical issue, it’s your responsibility not to breed it for the sake of money.”

in Palmyra in October. All of those events bring together dog lovers from across the region for fellowship and competition.

LKC also holds educational community events like “Meet the Breeds” and “Responsible Pet Ownership Day.” In addition, LKC awards scholarships to students interested in the veterinary sciences and assists with the funding of local police department K-9 programs.

“We can be a community resource,” said Martin. “Say you’re looking for a particular breed. I’ll first point someone toward a member. There are plenty of opportunities to do things with dogs.”

More than 85 dues-paying members make up the Lancaster Kennel Club, which is governed by a code of ethics. They are owners, breeders and exhibitors of purebred dogs and, for the most part, Lancaster County residents.

There are more than 60 breeds of dogs owned by LKC members.

“They’re just everyday people who love dogs,” said Martin. “Not everybody in our club is showing their dogs.”

Martin shares his Centerville-area home with two Norwich terriers, Daisy Mae and Otis.

“They’re small,” said Martin. “They’re faithful. They’re fun little dogs.”

A full voting member of the American Kennel Club, LKC can trace its origins to 1921.

“In the 1920s, it was just like-minded people coming together,” said Martin. “People showed their dogs, and some traveled. They bred purebred dogs.”

The City of Lancaster has announced that Grammy Award-winning R&B group 112 will headline Celebrate Lancaster on Friday, Aug. 14, in downtown Lancaster.

The annual community festival draws thousands of residents and visitors to the first and 100 blocks of North Queen Street. It will run from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and it is free and open to the public.

Known for hits including “Peaches & Cream,” “Dance With Me,” and “Only You,” 112 rose to fame in the late 1990s and became one of R&B’s most successful groups of the era. The group’s signature sound still resonates

with audiences around the world, with more than 7 million monthly listeners across streaming platforms.

This year’s Celebrate Lancaster theme, “Back to the Block,” celebrates the neighborhood block parties that have been a tradition in Lancaster for decades. In addition to the headline concert, the event will include local food trucks, classic games, artisan vendors, family-friendly activities, community resources, DJs, and live performances from regional performers. Live entertainment will begin at 5 p.m. on the stage in Binns Park, with 112 closing out the event.

Picnic

The Millersville Woman’s Club will host a picnic on Tuesday, Aug. 18, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Millersville Borough’s Freedom Memorial Park, 9 Shertzer Lane. The picnic will take place in Pavilion A, the largest pavilion. This gathering is a meet-andgreet and is open to all area women. There is no obligation to join the club.

Church to Offer GriefShare Program

Schulz Named to Fulton Board

Hempfield Church, 3050 Marietta Ave., Lancaster, invites individuals who are grieving the loss of a loved one to join GriefShare, a Christian-based grief support group. The upcoming 13-week session will be held on Wednesdays from Aug. 26 to Nov. 18 from 12:30 to 2 p.m. in Room 124 at the church.

Each session combines professionally produced video content with small group discussions, offering participants a safe space to process their

grief. Attendees will also receive a workbook with journaling prompts and reflection exercises to guide them through their personal healing journey.

GriefShare will be led by Robin Murray, an experienced and empathetic facilitator who has experienced grief.

Fulton Financial Corporation has announced the appointment of David S. Schulz as a member of its board of directors for a term commencing Sept. 14 and expiring at Fulton’s 2027 annual meeting of shareholders.

With the addition of Schulz, Fulton’s Board will have 11 members, and Schulz will serve on the audit and risk committees. He has also been appointed to the board of directors of Fulton’s banking subsidiary, Fulton Bank, N.A. Schulz served as senior vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco International Inc. from 2016 to June 2020, executive vice president and chief financial officer of Wesco from June 2020 to February 2026, and executive vice president and special adviser to the CEO of Wesco from February 2026 until his retirement

on May 31.

Prior to joining Wesco, Schulz was senior vice president and chief operating officer of Armstrong Flooring Inc. and was previously senior vice president and chief financial officer of Armstrong World Industries Inc. and vice president of finance of the Armstrong Building Products division.

Before joining Armstrong World Industries in 2011, he held various financial leadership roles with Procter & Gamble and the J.M. Smucker Company. He was also an officer in the United States Marine Corps.

Schulz joined the board of Sterling Infrastructure Inc. in 2025, and he was appointed as chair of the audit committee in 2026. He also serves on the company’s compensation and talent development committee.

Overseen by a 15-member board, Leadership Lancaster employs Kemble, executive director Jennifer Diaz and program coordinator Sage Rivera. In addition to tuition fees - some of which amount to employers covering the costs of employees’ professional development - Leadership Lancaster is funded through grants from local foundations.

“We have some really wonderful, amazing people in our community doing great things,” said Kemble.

“We get to know these individuals personally. Lancaster is full of amazing people. Lancaster is such a strong place for collaboration. We are really good at working together and working toward a larger goal.”

In 1983, Leadership Lancaster was born out of a two-year initiative on volunteerism by the Junior League of Lancaster and the support of the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce.

Since then, the program’s more than 3,000 graduates have impacted the Lancaster County community in a variety of meaningful ways.

Church to Host Concert

St. Peter’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 10 Delp Road, Lancaster, will host the Lancaster British Brass Band in concert on Saturday, Aug. 8, at 7 p.m.

The band’s program will feature transcriptions of classical masterpieces, spirited marches, inspiring hymns, popular music

all friends of mine. They contributed as well with vocals, piano, percussions. It’s a very collaborative work, which is fun. Music is more fun when you do it with other people.”

“The Lighthouse” was inspired by a book of the same name by Michael D. O’Brien. “It’s a beautiful book,” said Nate. “I read it years ago, and it really resonated with me like no other book has except the Bible. It was really inspiring. For months, I really wanted to write something about that because that’s just where I go. I just wanted to let it out in a musical way. Months went by, and then finally I started and it all kind of flowed. It’s definitely a God moment. It just all came together.”

He said it’s his way of communicating his feelings. “Music for me is the easiest way to express the inner workings of the soul and your emotions and everything like that,” said Nate, who throughout high school was a concert master for the Lancaster Academy for the Performing Arts. “I think different people have different ways of expressing themselves. Some people paint or they write. For me, it’s music.”

The album, which took eight months to record, was 12 years in the making. Nate began playing the violin when he was 7 years

old. His mother, Kristin, is a professional pianist and harpist. “She really helped nurture that in me,” Nate said. “I would find instruments and ask for instruments for my birthday.”

His father, Joel, has also been instrumental. “My dad is the number one emotional supporter,” Nate said. “He does not play music at all, but he’s really been supportive of me.”

The father and son enjoy spending time together outdoors - hunting, fishing, and hiking. “That really kind of found its way into the music too because most of my music is more naturally inspired,” Nate said. He has been classically trained by Tara Kenkelen. “She was my primary violin teacher all through from the time I was 7 to the time I graduated,” Nate said. “She’s an amazing violinist, so she really helped me with that. And then in high school, I started getting into like traditional Irish music and folk music. I really enjoyed the sound of it. I just really connected with it, so I started employing my classical training to play fiddle music as well. I started incorporating that into my compositions as well. And that’s kind of how the sound was born, more or less.”

Nate, who was homeschooled, will be a rising sophomore at Christendom

College, a liberal arts college in Front Royal, Va. He plans to major in economics with a minor in music.

With “The Lighthouse” receiving rave reviews, Nate has already started working on his second album. “I have a bunch of songs put together right now,” he said. “I’m not quite sure how it’s all going to come together, but I’ve done a lot of recording with my mom on the harp. And then I have just a bunch of other songs that I’ve made over the past couple months and then more stuff that I’m going to record at school. I’ve got a lot of friends who are musicians at school, so we’re going to do some recording together down there.”

Nate’s not sure if he will pursue a career in music.

“My primary goal, what I see is my vocation, is to be a father,” he said. “I just (want) to be a family man. Oftentimes being a professional musician, especially a composer, it’s really hard to feed a family of a decent size just off music. I’m thinking about it, praying about it, just kind of seeing where God leads me. If He wants me to go that direction and I find a lot of success with it, then that’s great. But if

Concert, Moth Program Set

A Music on the Lawn concert will take place from 5 to 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, rain or shine in the backyard at President James Buchanan’s Wheatland. The family-friendly concert will showcase Untethered, featuring Paul Geiss and Jam, a Philadelphia-based spontaneous composition and jazz collective led by Geiss.

Attendees are encouraged to bring a blanket or chair and pack a picnic. Leashed dogs are welcome.

Registration is required. There is a requested donation for people age 18 and up, and children and LancasterHistory members will receive free admission. Walk-ins are welcome.

Visitors are asked to treat the plants, flowers, and trees with kindness, as the Tanger Arboretum has put great effort into beautifying the grounds and keeping all living things healthy. Climbing the trees is not permitted.

The Friends of the Tanger Arboretum will offer a nighttime Nature Series program called “The Nocturnal World of Moths” on Saturday, Aug. 22. The event will take place from 8 to 10 p.m. in the Carriage House at the LancasterHistory Museum & Research Center.

Lancaster Conservancy naturalist Keith Williams will speak about the biology and ecology of moths, which are diverse insects and are well adapted to avoid predation and find love in the dark. A moth lighting will follow the presentation. A moth

lighting, also called a mothing or light-sheeting, is an activity where an artificial light source is used to attract moths and other nighttime insects to a white sheet, allowing for individuals to look at the specimens up close.

Williams is a naturalist, educator, writer, and photographer. He has a Bachelor of Science in environmental biology from Kutztown University and a Master of Science in ecological teaching and learning from the Lesley University Audubon Expedition Institute. He has been educating people for 30 years and has established outdoor education programs across the contiguous U.S., as well as in Puerto Rico and China. He is the author of two books about snorkeling.

Williams is the vice president for engagement and education at the Lancaster Conservancy, where he serves as the Conservancy’s lead naturalist, develops and manages volunteer and education programs, and manages the interpretive ranger program. He is a nationally registered paramedic, wilderness emergency medical technician, wilderness medicine instructor, swift water rescue technician, and wildlands firefighter.

Manufacturers’ Association Announces Expansion

Herb Guild Plans Meeting

The Manufacturers’ Association has announced an investment by BAE Systems to help expand the organization’s Automation Training Center, a new 5,000-square-foot state-of-the-art training facility dedicated to automation, robotics, and mechatronics training in support of the defense industrial base and regional manufacturing sector.

The newly named BAE Systems Automation Training Center is an expansion of the Manufacturers’ Association’s existing 20,000-squarefoot training center and was made possible in part through the support of BAE Systems, which helped underwrite the development of the facility. The center will provide hands-on

training and apprenticeship opportunities designed to upskill workers in the high-demand fields of automation, robotics, and mechatronics.

The BAE Systems Automation Training Center will be a key component of TIDE, the Technology Innovation Defense Ecosystem, a central Pennsylvania initiative of the region’s defense manufacturing community, designated by the Department of War.

TIDE was also awarded a $6.1 million grant in 2023 through the U.S. Department of War’s Office of Local Defense Community Cooperation and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania to train and upskill the defense manufacturing workforce across the region.

The Conestoga Herb Guild will host Penn State Extension Master Gardener Colleen Emmerling on Wednesday, Aug. 12, at 6:30 p.m. at the Millersville VFW, 219 Walnut Hill Road, Millersville.

Emmerling, a Master Gardener since 2021, will demonstrate how to make a pond garden in a pot. She will discuss the various plants that can be grown successfully in a water-filled pot to create a water feature on a deck, porch, or patio.

Her interest in gardening began with a part-time job in the perennials section of the former Funks Farm Market in Millersville.

Guild member Brenda Walker will present a talk on the Herb of the Month: stinging nettle.

Refreshments will be served after a brief business meeting.
