Six PDs To Feature In National Night Out Event By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The annual National Night Out (NNO) event for Manor, East Hempfield, and West Hempfield townships will be held on Tuesday, Aug. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Leisure Bowling & Golf Center, 3440 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. NNO was created by the National Association of Town Watch to foster community-police partnerships and foster neighborhood camaraderie, and the local event will certainly provide an opportunity to do so. The event at the Leisure Center has been coordinated by the Manor Township Police Department (MTPD) and will be attended by police departments from Millersville borough, East Hempfield (EHTPD) and West Hempfield (WHTPD) townships, Millersville University (MUPD), and Amtrak. All of the
participating police departments will bring vehicles. MUPD will offer tours of the command center and provide child ID kits at no charge. EHTPD is planning to offer a K-9 demonstration. WHTPD might bring out a drone for a demonstration. “It’s nice to go out with other departments,” said MUPD officer Phoulideth Chanthongthip. “The community sees us bonding together as one.” “We have a good thing going,” agreed MTPD officer Trevor St. Clair, who has spearheaded the coordination of the event, picking up where Cpl. Kimberly Geyer left off when she had to take time off on medical leave. “Amtrak and West Hempfield (WHTPD) reached out, asking to join us this year.” The local NNO event will not be restricted to police departments. The transformations in recent years at Our Home of Hope, a personal care home for 30 residents in Columbia, are as numerous as the hands that have helped to make them possible. After the main living area was painted and new pictures were hung on the walls, one resident told board president Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Area residents are invited to join other veteran and amateur athletes as they run and kayak through the annual Chiques Challenge hosted by the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. The duathlon is slated for Saturday, Aug. 10, and will stage from the Columbia River Park, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. Participants will be transported to Vinegar Ferry Road for the 8:30 a.m. start time. The course takes runners along the river via the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail and through the streets of Marietta. The approximately 4-mile run portion of the event ends at the Marietta Boat Launch. There, runners will take to the river aboard kayaks and finish downstream at the Columbia River Park. Offered again this year is the option to enter as a team, with one participant handling the running portion while the other takes on the kayaking duties. A See Chiques Challenge pg 4

The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS), 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, will hold its annual Bookworm Frolic. The annual sale of used books will run from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 14, through Friday, Aug. 16, and from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 17. The sale will feature approximately 40,000 books in 22 categories, including fiction, children’s literature, travel, music, and history. Separate fees have been set for hardback books and for paperback books. Everything will be half-price on Aug. 17. On Aug. 16 and 17, there will be a box deal, with separate fees per box on Friday and on Saturday. The proceeds will be given to a charitable cause. “We’re doing this because we want the community to get to know us outside our uniforms,” Chanthongthip commented, noting that too often people only interact with law enforcement in tense situations. “We don’t want people to fear us. We’re out here for them,” St. Clair added. The event will be held rain or shine. The Leisure Center offers ample parking, but if the lot fills up, folks may also park at Faith Bible Fellowship Church, 151 Donerville Road, Lancaster. ASSE students come to practice their English and experience American culture, such as food, sports, shopping, etc. The students also love to share their own culture and language with their host families. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.” When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill. Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live. The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared

The building, formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to state-of-the-art. Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects, Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for

On July 1, more than 40 people waited at Groffdale Mennonite Church in Leola for a bus to arrive from New York City. The group consisted of host family members who were eager to meet the 26 Fresh Air children who were scheduled to arrive at 3 p.m. The Sellers family of Denver, Caitlin and Keith and their three children ages 8, 5, and 3, were looking forward to sharing their home in the woods with their assigned child. “We thought it would be a good opportunity to open our world to a child with limited experience,� said Keith, who noted that camping in the backyard was on the family’s agenda. “We have plenty of outdoor activities planned,� added Keith. A picnic and at least one fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing. Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,� said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making
slime. “We both don’t like roller coasters,� noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster County,� said Tanya. The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up. “We thought it sounded like fun,� shared Tanya. The Fresh Air Fund is a not-forprofit agency that connects thousands of children from lowincome families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location. Italian artist Guglielmo Botter will exhibit his sketches of Lancaster city’s historic buildings in August and September at the Lancaster City Visitor Center, 38 Penn Square, Lancaster. The Lancaster Office of Promotion will host an opening reception with Botter on First Friday, Aug, 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Visitor Center. Light refreshments will be served. In 2010, Michelle McGovern went through the devastating agony of her first child, a son named Liam, being stillborn at 21.5 weeks. “They said it’s like being struck by lightning; it can never happen again,” recalled Michelle. As she and her husband, Mike, grieved the loss of their son, a coworker whose daughter had experienced the loss of a child through a miscarriage told Michelle about Sarah’s Laughter, a nonprofit that offers faith-based support to couples struggling with infertility or the death of a baby. Since no groups were meeting locally then, Michelle signed up to receive emails from the organization, and as time went on she more or less forgot about Sarah’s Laughter. Michelle gave birth to her daughter, Violet, in 2012, with no complications. “She was a pictureperfect pregnancy,” noted Michelle. Her labor and delivery with Violet went quickly - something that Michelle laughs about now because of how much it reflects her daughter’s enthusiastic personality. In 2015 and 2016, however, Mike and Michelle suffered the loss of two children through miscarriages and again waded through the immense sorrow that accompanies such losses. To honor the legacy of Liam, as well as their other children, and to help other couples experiencing the loss of a child through stillbirth, the McGoverns donated a Cuddle Cot to The Women’s Place at Heart of Lancaster in 2016 and another to Women & Babies Hospital in 2017. “We did the two Cuddle Cot donations, but I wanted to do something more regularly (to help other women),” Michelle said. As Michelle rediscovered Sarah’s Laughter and began regularly listening to the organization’s podcast, which features interviews with people who understand infertility and child loss, she began to consider starting a group in Lancaster. “(Sarah’s Laughter founder) Beth Forbus will say on the podcast, ‘If you’re thinking about starting a group in your town, get in touch
with us,’” Michelle said. “I told Mike, ‘I don’t think I can NOT do this now.’” So in September 2017, Michelle bravely took the plunge to start a local Sarah’s Laughter infertility and child loss support group. “I knew that there had to be a need,” she said. “I knew how much I struggled with my losses, and I didn’t want anyone to walk through that alone.” Any woman who is experiencing infertility or grief related to miscarriage or stillbirth is welcome to attend a meeting of Sarah’s Laughter - Lancaster on the second Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at Community Fellowship Church, 200 Bethel Drive, Lancaster. “As women, (having children) is sort of a thing we expect we will be able to do, and when it doesn’t work the way it’s supposed to, it

Church Slates Organ Concert
Town and Country Garden Club of Lancaster will sponsor a bus trip to the New York Botanical Garden on Wednesday, Sept. 18. The trip will include a guided tour of the special exhibit “Living Art of Roberto Burle Marx,” a box lunch at the Garden Terrace Room, and a guided “Garden Highlights” tram tour. The bus will leave from Church of the Apostles, 1850 Marietta Ave.,
Lancaster, at 7 a.m. and will return at approximately 9:30 p.m. The deadline for registration is Monday, Aug. 26. The cost includes all admissions, tips, lunch, snacks, and water. The 35th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes and Gardens will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided walking tour will offer a glimpse into the architecture and style of homes in a variety of Mount Gretna neighborhoods. Sites include tiny summer c o t tages, weekend getaways, and yearround “winterite” homes. Participants may also take a trolley ride to one home near the lake. Tour attendees will see how people have transformed the cottages to accommodate modern life while keeping the structures’ charm. An iconic home from a previous year is back on the tour. The cottage was built in 1903 by a New York industrialist and has one of the largest porches in town. Rumor has it that this house was designed on the back of a napkin by a famous architect. A vintage 1958 analog Allen organ is housed behind the 18th-century Tannenberg organ screen in the balcony of historic 1854 First Reformed Church in Lancaster. The church will be the site of a 30-minute “Organic Reflections” concert on First Friday, Aug. 2. First Reformed Church, 40 E. Orange St., Lancaster, will host an organ concert on First Friday, Aug. 2. The event is part of the First Friday “Organic Reflections,” which is a gift to the Lancaster community from First Reformed Church, a center city congregation of the United Church of Christ. All concerts are 30 minutes in length and begin at 8 p.m. each First Friday. Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Admission is free. Guest organist Ken Krause will play the vintage 1958 analog Allen organ. Krause has selected a program of organ classics, including works of Vierne and Guilmant. For the past 60 years, the vintage analog Allen organ has been used every week to lead worship and accompany the choir at First

Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states. Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery. Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribboncutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month. Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic
tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup. The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. A number of area companies have announced recent employee promotions and new additions to their staffs. Wohlsen Construction Company has welcomed Monica Abreu-Adames, BIM technician, to the Wohlsen technology team. Expanding on Wohlsen’s virtual design and construction capabilities, Abreu-Adames’ primary role will be to elevate clients’ preconstruction experience through the use of photo-realistic visuals. Her expertise will help advance Wohlsen’s collaboration with clients and trade partners using visual models. Abreu-Adames is a recent graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College, where she majored in architectural technology and served as president of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS). In early April, her rendering work won first place at the Central PA Revit User Group rendering competition. RGS Associates Inc. has announced the promotions of two staff members: Nicholas Grandi has been promoted to senior project landscape architect, and Karen Musser , accounting manager/human resource administrator, was appointed to the position of associate. RGS specializes in the design of senior living communities, commercial centers, urban centers, open spaces, and residential neighborhoods located throughout southcentral Pennsylvania. Grandi is responsible for the conception, interpretation, design, and execution of subdivision and land development projects.

Volunteers Host Ice Cream Social Five Allstate agency owners and agency staff members recently volunteered with Aaron’s Acres, mentoring older teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, Allstate volunteers and the young adults planned and hosted an ice cream social for residents of Pleasant View
Retirement Community. Thanks to its volunteerism, Aaron’s Acres will receive a $5,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. Aaron’s Acres will use these funds to support its yearround therapeutic programs for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. According to Maria Kap-
sak, community outreach coordinator at Aaron’s Acres, some of the funds will go toward the cost of camp for children whose families may be unable to afford it. Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with disabilities ages 5 to 21 years old with year-round therapeutically based and age-appropriate recreational programs.

The grants support organizations addressing domestic violence, youth empowerment, disaster preparedness, hunger and other causes.
